Mate's Lore

Rate this book
PART 1 BBW Vampire Serial

Every hundred years tradition dictates that all eligible females in the town of Sweetwater assemble for the choosing ceremony. Two vampire kings have separate territories within the surrounding countryside. Both are eager to pick their future brides.
What a waste of her freaking time.
Tanya is among the many women at the choosing ceremony. As far as she’s concerned it’s an outdated, sexist event. It’s not important that the two males are ridiculously rich and handsome.

Deep down she knows a plain Jane like her will never be picked by one of the kings anyway. Many of the women in the town square are stunningly beautiful with model figures. Most seem enthusiastic about being a queen even if it means being mated to a blood sucker, which suits her just fine.

Imagine her surprise when King Brant sets his sights firmly on her. Once a vampire king has decided, there’s no going back. But her home is in Sweetwater. Being forced to live amongst the vampire species…big gulp…forced to mate with a vampire is not what she had in mind for herself. Maybe she can convince him to let her go, to pick again. If not, she’ll have to find a way to escape his - very muscular and rather delicious - clutches.

Mates's Lore is Part 1 of a 6 part serial and is approximately 19,000 words/76 pages.
The story contains strong sexual themes/language and is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Well, well, well! I have to say that I LOVE facebook sponsored ads sometimes. As much as I don't actually believe in them, I'm super excited that they show me all the books that are available in the kindle unlimited pile or I would've NEVER found this one. Vampires, as a romance paranormal element are my first love. From the moment I cracked up Bram Stoker's Dracula I was a goner. Then you add in the whole paranormal element and the different and unique spin all these authors take on them and I'm a happy gal!

This story was so totally unique. Think The Bachelor for vampires. Only instead of 25 dates, all the 'eligible' women in the village must go to the ceremony that will pick the vampire kings new mate! It is basically them looking over the crowd and taking the girl that alarm bells go off for. This is set either in the current times or the near future. So it is a reality were vampires exist and they have government rules regarding vampires. The world building was very easy and I didn't spend time in the authors head with them struggling to info dump all over the place. The characters drove this story and specifically the lead female did. Jane is a strong independent woman that gets herself in over her head. From the first page I am feeling the story and the reality through her. Yes, this was a quick read therefore the author had to really plant us in this reality and through Jane, it is totally believable.

In this book vampires are vampires, and they are dark, sadistic, and sexy. I loved this story and I'm going to dive into the second one tonight. I can't stop! These are fantastic!

3 ‘vampire escapism’ stars

Sometimes you just need some mindless vampire smut. A story you can lose yourself in where you can suspend belief and not have to think too hard and just sit back and enjoy it for the pure escapism that it is. And for that reason, I enjoyed this story. It’s part 1 of a the Chosen by the Vampire Kings serial - all instalments are available so there is no threat of being left hanging by a cliffy, and the ebook box-set was only 99c. I couldn’t resist.

The story is set in the human world where there are two co-existing vampire covens, both ruled by vampire Kings. Every hundred years the vampire Kings get to select a human mate (because they can’t breed with their own kind), and the chosen woman must go with them, with no say of her own.

Tanya is a normal woman, smart and sensible with a life of her own. She wants nothing to do with the vampire world, and is protesting the barbaric ritual loudly when she is chosen by vampire King, Brant.

Unlike his arch enemy and rival King, Zane, Brant is actually a gentleman. He wants his mate to be willing, to be an equal partner in every way, he wants love and a family, and he’s willing to let things move at Tanya’s pace, but he is still an alpha and he makes no secret of the fact that he will take what’s his.

“I will have you.” His eyes burned. Hungry. Hooded with desire.

There’s some nice interplay between them as they argue back and forth, and Tanya starts to realise what her life will become. They are both wildly attracted to each other and the sexual tension bubbles along nicely as they flirt and banter and figure out where they stand with each other.

“Just for the record I normally don’t fuck on the first date.”
“Well it’s okay then.” He clasped her thighs and pulled them around his hips settling his straining erection at her core. “I will take you hard the first time but make no mistake, Tanya. We will be making love.”

But just as Tanya is coming to accept her fate and gives in to their raging chemistry, her new world is terrifyingly swept out from under her as Mate’s Lore is invoked.

I enjoyed this novella, it’s a promising start to the series. I like both Brant and Tanya, and the secondary characters introduced, and there are some really promising conflicts brewing with an assortment of bad guys. The stage is set for some interesting developments, and I already have predictions where it will go. I’m looking forward to continuing on to see if I’m right.

3 stars.

OK. I wanted to like this. It's KU and there's like a billion of them (cause its a flipping serial. Ugh) and they are the prequel to a different series I want to read. But damn.

This ish was fucking irritating as all hell. I rolled my eyes and skimmed so much. *rolls eyes again* IDK if I can make it through FIVE segments.

Help.

Part 1:

This book! Was recommend to me and oh boy DO I LOVE IT!

Tanya is quite likeable, but the things I love the most? How well the “world” is built. The humans, the vampires, shifters etc. It pulled me right in!

Off to read part 2 I go 🧡👍

Chosen by the Vampire Kings is the first intriguing book in the enthralling Chosen Series by Charlene Hartnady. I have read a lot of this authors books and was already in love with her writing, but this series sealed the deal and raised the bar she is one of my favourite authors.
I am ADDICTED to this series; I can get enough of this paranormal romantic goodness. With alpha males in all shapes and sizes with Ménage à trois, MFM love triangle (eat your heart out), Vampires, Shifters, and Elves. It is Sexy, it is Sizzling, it is smoking Hot, it is Erotic so much so that it jumps right off the pages and leaves you needing a cold shower.
Everyone wants to be the one selected but only two make the grade but only one sassy, headstrong female makes it. Where fighting to the death is not uncommon. So, what happens when two smoking hot soul-destroying vampires Kings, mortal enemies want the same thing; this is where things get so interesting, and the fun begins. These men are ruthless, they are vicious, power players, they are violent. There is lots of action, danger and war around every corner but given all that they love fast, they love with their whole heart and make you want to go and find your own.
Charlene has woven a captivating, tangled web of lies, deceit, suspense, drama and love that will leave you breathless. The characters are to die for, and each have their own voice in this series. I love that we get their POV because it makes them more real.
It is not all doom and gloom though there are plenty of witty moments and humour that will have you laughing out loud especially Zane and Becky, they crack me up.
Don’t even stop to think just click and read and tell me I am not wrong. Happy reading!

This...is one of the most horrible & disgusting books I have read.
And it isn't even the whole book, just 1/6 of it. And thank whatever gods there are for that.
I would not be able to stomach it all. Barely managed to go trough this one, however little there was.

I couldn't even write a review for it for months, it made me so mad.

If I thought Charlene Hartnady's Royal Dragon at least had potential even thou it also was crude and not really to my liking, then compared to this disaster it's downright awesome!

If RD had "mine" bullshit and annoying alpha dudes, I'll take it any day over Mate's Lore. I don't even want to speak of it. It's a whole new level - to not just annoy me, but enrage me.

Women having no say at all whether they want to or not to become the vampire king's mate. If you get chosen, too bad for you girl, no can do. Spread your legs and be the mate.
If at first the female lead at least thought that all that shit that's happening is archaic bullshit (which it totally is) and said so, she pretty fast no longer thought it once the male leads dick got involved.

And that ^ is the mildest of the things I absolutely despised about this book.

Not gonna write more cuz it's only bringing back all the anger.

If you liked the book, good for you...I guess. As for me - I'm never and I truly do mean NEVER reading anything that Charlene Hartnady has written.
There are favorite authors we can follow, now for the 1st time I wish we could blacklist authors we do not like so that their books couldn't ever even by accident somehow show up to us. I hate it that much.

This isn't a bad 3 stars it's just an unfulfilled three star rating. I get that this is being released in 6 parts but it would be much better to have it all at once. I feel that it makes the story too choppy to have it broken up this way. Just as you're starting to get into the characters the story ends.

I enjoyed the premise of this story and I hope when I read all short stories I will feel that it is complete. As a reader you do have to realize that this is very much an alternate universe not just our us now with vampires thrown in. Every century the vampires kings pick a human female to mate with and the humans allow this. Now of course if you've read any dystopian novels you'll know just how much humans will allow to happen. Though this is not a dystopian novel in anyway it does take that little extra bit of allowing yourself to remember this is not real this is a fiction. If you can allow yourself that then I think the rest of the story flows and can be enjoyable. At least as much as a super short cliffhanger story can be.

My only real pet peeve with this is that it's tagged/noted to be a BBW novel. Sure it is mentioned that the heroine had curves and large breasts but multiple times she herself even states that she's not overweight. Even her doctor tells her she's not overweight. So as someone who specifically chose this novel since it was tagged as a BBW I'm disappointed especially as someone who is not a size 2.

I'm still on the fence about recommending this, I'll have to read the next one or two parts to the story.

Mates's Lore is Part 1 of 6 in the Chosen by the Vampire Kings serial and revolves around the curvy and independent Tanya who, against her will is chosen by vampire king Brandt as his new bride in a mandatory choosing seremony that takes place every hundred years.

Kings Zane and Brandt have separate territories within the surrounding countryside. Both are eager to pick their future brides, both initially have their eyes set on Tanya, a curvy, but plain Jane BBW, but she is eventually chosen by Brandt, the gentleman of the two.

I loved that Tanya is no shrinking violet and readily speaks her mind to both kings even though she initially fears them. Still, Brand is the gentleman of the two kings, while Zane is known for his ruthlessness.

But when tragedy strikes, Tany will have to face not only Brandt, but Zane's demands as well. And given his reputation, he is to be feared.

I picked up this story on a whim and was hooked instantly. It's thrilling, addictive, captivating, arousing, romantic, sexy steaming and hot. I read all the four released volumes back-to-back and have preordered the fifth installment as well.

I'm sorry, but it was just bad. Really bad! I've made to page 17 I think and had to put it down. Absolutely nothing about this story makes sense. It feel like the first 2 minutes of a short porn movie. There is no storyline behind and the characters seem dull.

Interesting first in series

The first time I noticed this book I skipped straight past, it looked so familiar I just assumed I'd read it but it kept popping up so I checked out the synopsis and was confused, it looked so similar to 'Claimed by the Vampire King' by Susan G. Charles, in order to keep their village safe every 100 years eligible females are chosen and offered to the vampire king so he can pick one.
Once I realised that I hadn't in fact already read this I started straight away and so far so good.
Tanya finds herself at the choosing ceremony, sitting out of the way since she's no interest in being a vampire queen, she likes her life fine just the way it is but of course it doesn't work that way King Brant can scent his mate even from outside. Now in this book there are two vampire covens both with their own kings, King Brant and King Zane these are birth enemies and although they are no longer at war an uneasy truce exists.
Zane collects his mate and takes her kicking and screaming back to his home and Brant takes Tanya, who, while she's not exactly thrilled is not kicking and screaming. We knew from the blurb that Brant set his sights on Tanya but I'd expected Zane to pick her as well, I'd assumed from the synopsis that both Kings would pick Tanya and she would slowly bring the covens together and bring peace to all.
There was enough in this book to make me read the next one, admittedly a lot goes as expected, clueless male who would have been better just explaining things, a jealous OTT rival female and a stubborn human.
So it's on to the next book for me, I enjoyed this read and the 3 stars is not a negative it's more a reflection of the length.

Overall: Tanya is forced to go to a royal vampire mating pick and she hates it. She stands in the back and watches as one of the girls are picked and the girl is screaming. Tanya steps forward to help her, but than she soon realizes that the other vampire king has picked her. When she first meets him and goes to his mansion, she tries to push him away because she doesn't want him. Slowly but surly he starts to wear her defenses down, but before she can get comfortable with him, Zane the other vampire king evokes the mating lore and Tanya's head is spinning around in a million circles because of it.

Pros: I love Brant and how kind and thoughtful he is towards Tanya. I also really liked her because she is the first character that I've read about that didn't just want to be with a vampire willingly.

Cons: My only con with this whole book and series is that it should be one damn book and not separated into only 70 pages a book.

Characters: Brant ; Tanya ; Zane

Page Turner: Yes

Series Cont: Yes

Recommend: Yes

I am going to lump the whole series review together because to separate one from the other is like torture. Plus, I could not put the books down long enough to write it until the end.

This series is Amazing! I literally read the whole series in one night. I was up until 5 AM! Every time I tried to put the books down and sleep, my thoughts were full of who would she choose, would they fight to the death, would she find happiness, and so on. So, I would pick it up again. It has been a long time since I have read a really good vampire book series where I could not wait until the next page. I am so thankful that the whole series was out or might have exploded at each cliffhanger. That is why I am waiting until the whole Alpha series is published because that is next on my list. If you are looking for an incredible paranormal writer and series, look no further.

This is very much the typical vampire finds his 'mate' novel.

The characters are stereotyped, as is the tale, however I just felt like this sort of light thing.

All decently likable, and no doubt this series will pretty much continue to fit into this genre.

Not bad, not stunningly good.

So was this terrible? No. Did it form a whole story? Also no. I picked this one up on a recommendation, so I wasn't super conscious it was a serial. Normally though serials do try to make a plot arc, and I feel that was unfinished here. Really the premise of this whole story on the short serial is that they meet, and they boink. There's very little else in it. I did want a tiny bit more.

Also - side note on the spicey parts. It seemed to rush through something that had been built up for the rest of the book. Like 2 pages? Come on, it seemed like he lasted about 3 seconds. Some sexy vampire king he is.

I probably won't be reading the rest of the series. Honestly though, never say never. I might get really bored and need a distraction.

DNF, honestly this book has good editing, a decent main idea for a book and that's about it. Honesty the only word that I can describe the h is pathetic. And the H, for a " gentleman " is an asshole who doesn't give a crap who he fuck or drinks, and only treasures her (if I can even call I that) because of her baby making abilities and cause she smells nice, but that doesn't stop him from telling her that - yeah I took you for my wife but ill go suck around while getting those women to orgasm but BELIEVE ME ITS NOTHING SEXUAL, oh and you can't do anything about it, cause I want to mate with you but I need to go pass some Os around first cAuSe I dOn'T wAnT tO hUrT yOu 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Very Good

Typical woman at the mercy of men scenario to start with. As usual the woman holds all the cards. Vampire kings have to choose mates and of course it is decided by the elusive something and scent. They just " know " somehow. While one king (Brant) is allowing the stubborn woman (Tanya ) to decide when the mating will happen the other kills his mate the first night then invokes Mates Lore. Now Tanya had to spend time with both kings and choose one at the end of 10 days. Who will she choose? On to book 2.

So hawt

Ok I want a vampire king! Truthfully her jealousy didn't bother me. If you chose me and I didn't want to be chosen you better not be sucking on another woman's neck the same night you pick me up when I'm suppose to be your queen. I mean really the guy is a dumbass. I'm on my way to order the next book because I'm thinking I'm going to like the other guy better even though he maybe slightly mean and supposedly killed his queen he chose. I love her sass I wish she said what was in her mind to the guy instead of in her head.

Good but a fast read.

while the story is good so far, it is quick to the point with none of the fluff. to get a real feel for the book I will have to read them all first. this is why I don't like it when authors write short mini books. to get to know the characters you need more. the passion and butterflies you feel are amazing. And you so fall in love with Brent because he is caring. But you now need book two so the bad boy Zane has his turn. so keep reading. But do enjoy.

I have just found this book, and once I started to read it, I couldn't put it down. This was an interesting twist to a vampire story, and I'm going to buy part 2 now. I just have to find out what will happen! The writing was great, I liked the characters and the plot is very interesting. The only thing that I didn't like was that the beginning felt a little bit rushed. Part from that I highly recommend this book!

A short, but very evocative beginning to this paranormal/vampire serial romance. A plot involving danger, lust, and sacrifice. An introduction into a world of ruthless beings who have a very real weakness. A weakness that only a human can protect. Definitely a series worth continuing.
