Get Out Of My Dreams

Alice and John Timberlake lead a quiet life in the suburbs of California. John is a prison officer at the California State Prison, and Alice assists the Agony Aunt columnist, with big dreams of becoming a reporter.

One morning they awaken to their lives turned upside down—John is on the couch with no recollection of how he got there, the front door lock is unbolted, and the alarm is disarmed. Alice’s underwear is neatly folded on top of her slippers––she knows she went to bed wearing them. Fearing they may have been victimized in their own home, they contact the authorities.

John and Alice discover they have been the latest victims of “The Magic Man,” a rogue hypnotist that gets into people’s dreams, makes them do his bidding, and has them reveal their darkest secrets. The FBI considers him a threat to the country. Some departments within the Halls of Justice want him eliminated; others think his talents could help solve crimes. They ask John and Alice’s help to bring the Magic Man to heel. None of them realize that their intended target is manipulating them. Everyone has secrets, and the Magic Man knows them all.

When a steamy fantasy shared between Alice and the Magic Man unveils a unique connection between them, it changes the rules of his game. All Alice and John had ever wanted was for the Magic Man to get out of their dreams––but now, they can never go back to the life they had before…

Allan J Lewis was born in South Wales UK, a son of a coal miner, in August 1939, just before the outbreak of World War 2.
He started work underground for the National Coal Board on his fifteenth birthday. He married in March 1961 and has two children, a daughter and a son, and two grandchildren.
Deep down he always wanted to be a writer but he felt thwarted by his lack of education. He would write a few pages and give up, frustrated by spelling and grammar. (This was before the days of personal computers.) As a young man he didn’t have much time to read or write. He was working two shifts on the coalface, and when his daughter came along he got himself another job as a part-time fireman.
By the time he was in his late forties and his two children had married, he found time to start reading again. He enjoyed the adventure novels of Wilbur Smith and the works of James Patterson and Lee Child. He loves a good crime thriller.
The pleasure he found in reading rekindled his desire to write.
He would create stories in his head, but did not put pen to paper in earnest until he retired. Allan has written two books a Mystery/Thriller and an Erotic/Romance.

This exciting book has been my very first reading experience with this author, and I have to say that it has been a thoroughly enjoyable one.
The book is an amazing fabulous debut thriller, for it is really gripping from start to finish.
All the characters involved come all splendidly to life within this suspenseful erotic tale, so to make this book such a joyful spectacle to read.
The story is situated mainly in California, USA, and from there it will start off into a full thrilling adventure in which our main characters Alice and John will come in all kinds of dangerous situations when their conscious minds and dreams are infiltrated without their knowledge by Joe The Magic Man, who's the main character within this book and series.
Responsible for these psychological supernatural intrusions of especially Alice's, but also in the beginning John's dreams, is Joe The Magic Man, and he will turn their lives really upside down with his control and domination of their dreaming brains.
What will follow is an intriguing and suspenseful story in which Alice and Joe, in some kind of partnership, will finally work together and solving crime cases for the FBI, mostly in collaboration with some detectives within the FBI with the likes of Agents Burrows, Campbell and Jones, while at the same time Joe is followed, seen and wanted as a threat by Frank Brubaker of Homeland Security.
Highly recommended, for this is for certain a very promising debut novel from this author, and that's why I would like to call this book: "A Fascinating Controlling Supernatural Debut Thriller"!

Oh gosh. I stopped at 22%. And if you know me or follow my reviews, I will push thru a bad book because I HATE to stop in the middle. And I didn't even get that far with this series. My main problems:

-- Good lord is this overwritten. Get to the point.
-- This is obviously a Brit writer wanting to write from the perspective of an American. That's cool, it's been done lots of time for each way. But please, figure out what lingo go on what continent.
-- Some terms (does this relate to the previous point?) are a bit outdated and insulting. "Injun's?" Is this the 1800's? Because, no, that type of language is just not cool. Sorry.
-- The editing! (dear-god-help-me-by-putting-a-pencil-thru-my-eye) This hurt to read. Was this never even proofed before being published? Take some pride in your work!

So yeah. Lots wrong with this. Most of this could be fixed with a good editor. The synopsis made it sound like it has a good idea behind it. Will I try to read it again later? Eh, maybe. I think I have about 100 books on my TBR list before I try again though.

This was an interesting read. Alice and John Timberlake are having some strange dreams, strange enough that the FBI agents get involved and that when the excitement begins. Warning to readers, this book does have an erotic story line and will make you blush and why it is a 4 star not a 5 star for me. Other than that the story is unique and intriguing. It is a hypnotic thriller that examines mind control in a way, all done by the mysterious magic man, I don't think I have read this unique version of mind control before, making this a read you can delve into and will having you thinking about for a long time after that last page is closed. The author has a great writing style that flows and interesting characters. well done.

This story was different, its concept unusual and clever. The idea of being able to be part of another's dreams and to control them is intriguing - the powers that be of course wanting to use it as a weapon (nothing new there then).

I don't want to give away too much but will say that this is a well written piece with the basis of a good idea.

Worth a look for those who like something different.

I found the concept of the book very intriguing and couldn’t wait to start it, however, I have had trouble finishing it. I gave up at about thirty percent and moved on to something else. I feel the story dragged on a little too long and didn’t grip me enough. The blurb, the cover, and the first few pages were brilliant and if they had continued maybe with a darker theme I might have enjoyed it more.

Get out of my Dreams is the first in the Magic Man series and tells of a man able to control others through hypnosis in their dreams.

Alice has woken up again with her underwear folded neatly on her shoes and her husband downstairs asleep on the couch with the house alarm off and the front door unlocked. Her husband is having his own issues as he is troubled by the disturbing dreams he is having. They call the police and find out that there is a man out there, who has not been identified, but is able to get people to bend to his will and divulge dark secrets while sleeping seemingly under hypnosis. Of course, the police are on high alert about this as a man who can control others while asleep could be a terrorist. As Alice continues to dread sleeping, she finds herself in a position where the dreams she is having are oddly exciting. Kinky, in fact. Alice realises she is able to talk to the Magic Man and he can guide her dreams. This has serious repercussions as Alice, a would-be reporter, gets roped in with him to help police investigations as they enter into people’s dreams as informants and give the police information that leads to criminal arrests. But even for all the good that Joe can do, there are always those who will never trust him. The line is fine and Alice and Joe could find themselves on the wrong side of it.

The idea started off well and I thought the ultimate ability to catch terrorists was a good one. I did not enjoy the erotic dreams and scenarios that Joe led some people through though. I thought that the author did not exactly understand what turned women on, and was using the premise of an old porn script. In fact, when I found out the author was an older male I was quite surprised. The erotic parts didn’t throw me until Alice decided to sleep with cartoon characters in her dreams and the absurdity of this destroyed any of those parts of the story. So many questions were left unanswered and when you find out who Joe is and how he fits into the story I had to question why he continued to create the erotic dreams he did. It almost seemed seedy and out of character.

There were a number of editing mistakes which tripped up the speed of reading and I found a lot of parts repeated and unnecessary. There was a distinctly British feel to the book even though it is based in the US. Overall the book was very average for me as the idea was great and could have been used in a much more meaningful way. But hey, different strokes for different folks (no pun intended).

Thanks to Voracious Readers Only and the author for a copy of the book.

A very unique concept!

Get Out of My Dreams has believable characters who partake in erotic fantasies in their dreams at the fancy of The Magic Man, who calls himself Joe. The Magic Man can get into your dreams, live out his erotic fantasies, and choose whether to let you remember even having the dreams at all. Joe’s hypnotic abilities are interesting and exciting. I love how the depth and breadth of his ability unfolds slowly throughout the story. Enter Alice, who is one of his “victims”, the FBI, and other national security agencies and Joe may have a positive way to use his gift, besides his erotic escapades. All the erotic scenes take place in dreams, so it feels like a safe yet risqué outlet that does not involve cheating. There were a couple of places that seemed repetitive, but I was accepting of that as I never got lost. This is Book 1 in the Magic Man Series, so it has a soft ending where nothing is really resolved; however, we do find out who Joe really is! This book has me excited to read Book 2! I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only. Thank you Allan! :)

This was definitely an interesting concept, one that I wish had been developed along other lines. I could have seen this as being the beginning of a great crime series. But there is no “bite” to the tale as it repeatedly falls into a bit of an adolescent soft porn fantasy that is not engaging for any modern female. The crimes are solved with little to no excitement and the main character, with all his brain power, can’t seem to spend his time doing much more than finding a way to make a dollar by proxy or imagining women in childhood fairytales gone wild. There were moments when flashes of possibility showed through the plotline, but they seemed to disappear with no development. The concept has definite promise, the prose is easy and flows for a quick read, but it became a disjointed task to finish the chapters to be able to do an honest review for Voracious Readers Only. Sorry, but this definitely was not a worthwhile read for me particularly – maybe I had different expectations. For those of you wanting a quick, very soft porn perusal though, this might be the ticket for you.

This novel has a very intriguing premise: a serial predator who can "hypnotise" people to do what he wants becomes involved in assisting law enforcement who are searching for him.

I really wanted to like this book - I thought the premise had a lot of potential, and there are some really interesting relationships and co-dependencies happening that create potential for conflict. (A lot of this potential was left unexplored - in fact, there's no indication the author even saw the potential for escalating tensions).

Unfortunately, I just couldn't get past some of the bigger flaws in the book: I didn't find the characters (particularly female characters) to be well-developed or believable, there was no real reckoning or conflict surrounding the violation this "gift" was perpetuating, and I felt that the depiction of law enforcement and their involvement with private citizens was not steeped in reality.

Having said all that, the plot itself is interesting, and the concept is a very good one.

I recently received a complimentary copy of Get Out of My Dreams by Allan Lewis in return for an honest review. After reading the synopsis, I was very intrigued by the premise, and Lewis delivered everything I had expected. For a debut novel, the author did a good job merging the thriller, supernatural and even erotica genres into one fun, interesting tale. I was asked to compare this novel to another book, and the only comparison I could make is The Hangman by @jackheathwriter. Both novels have a main protagonist (?) who doesn't meet society's concept of normal, who lend their unique talents to aid law enforcement.
.
But to return to GOoMD, the author was able to create a wide cast of characters, both good and bad, the the reader will enjoy getting to know. The storyline, while not completely realistic, is the right balance of action and world building. This book is called the first in the Magic Man series, and it is a series I am looking forward to continuing.

*I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review*

I thought I knew what I was getting into when I started this book but holy cow! The conflict starts early and the plunge into the action captured me instantly. This book has adult themes, think cable high drama detective show. The dark themes explored in this novel deepen the story and help you empathize with Alice and Joe.

I loved the dialog in this book. It reads like actual conversations and makes you feel like you're sitting at the table with Alice and Joe helping them figure out what to tell the FBI over the morning cup of coffee.

Allen does a superb job building the world of his novel. I found myself wanting more as a reader and drawn to see if Joe's secret would come out to hurt him. I give Get Out of My Dreams five stars! If you are a fan of crime mystery or enjoy a nicely woven plot then you will thoroughly enjoy this book!

Intriguing idea for a thriller. The very notion that somebody could get into your brain whilst you were sleeping and carry out the strangest of sexual fantasies and leave you with no knowledge whatsoever is extremely disturbing and hopefully very far fetched!!!!
The story starts well and drags you into the lives of an ordinary couple who have a couple of disturbing nights sleep! However once the link is established between “magic joe” and the wife the story takes on a porn vibe where his sordid fantasies are played out and slows down in pace. Once the FBI become involved it then becomes a game of cat and mouse with Joe trying to evade capture whilst helping to track down drug gangs and other criminals.
Received this complimentary copy from Voracious Readers Only, but unfortunately I didn’t think it achieved its full potential as a novel, too much focus on Snow White and not enough on using the “gift” for other purposes!!!

Not my cup of tea.

I received a complimentary copy of this book to review. While the premise of the storyline sounded promising, I found all the erotic dreams to be too much. I don’t like harlequin type books and that is what this reminded me of. The concept of helping the FBI by getting into the minds of the criminals had the potential to make the book interesting, but it fell short. Also, long before I got to the end and read about the author, I kept noticing things and phrases that were definitely British, but the characters were supposedly American; perhaps this author should stick to British settings rather than America. Additionally, as someone else posted in their review, the book needed some serious editing. All in all, I’m sad to say I was very disappointed with this book and do not recommend it.

This book began with, what I felt was, a hard-to-believe premise that the Magic Man (Joe) could enter people's minds and make them tell him the truth or enact sexual fantasies with them. However, near the end of the book, I felt that Lewis had given a clever and plausible reason for how this happened. The two main characters Joe and Alice were, in my opinion overly focused on sex and I found the soft porn unnecessary and mildly distasteful; every man had an enormous penis and every woman couldn't wait to engage copiously with such! The author did not manage to convince me of this!

It was revealed by the end of the book who Joe was and the mystery surrounding his background. I liked the character development that he wanted to use his "gift" for good and was eager to assist the CIA with major crimes. I felt that Alice and her husband were less well-developed characters and look forward to Alice being put into danger in her role of go-between in future books in the series.

Unlike other reviewers, I found this book well edited and I can only surmise that the author took note of the earlier comments and made changes. I found the book easy to read with good flow.

I was given a free e-copy of this book in return for an honest review by the author and Voracious Readers Only.

Well THAT was different! ... I loved the whole concept (a little heavy on the soft porn though IMHO).
It was a rollercoaster ride all the way through. I'm glad Allan Lewis left it open for sequels. There are so many places to go! The premise is great as who hasn't at least once in their life thought it was a good thing nobody can read minds ...

I hope we get to see Joe and the gang again soon.

Received this book in PDF format from the author through Voracious Readers Only.
It was advertised as "Psychological Thriller" but actually it has
more supernatural elements, too much supernaturalism. I don't care for supernatural stuff.
The story is set in the USA, while the author is British. One of the seven dwarves in the Snow White scene was named Dozy, not Sleepy. I lost interest.
I jumped to the end, went "Batman? meh" Scene set for the next book in the series.

This book was unique in its storytelling. From what I thought it was going to be about to what it actually was about was very different. For the most part I enjoyed the storyline of a Dreamwalker who goes from FBIs most wanted list to being at the forefront of solving some terrible crimes. What I didn’t really enjoy was the weird erotic dreams he puts into peoples heads. Definitely not my taste but if get past those it’s an intriguing read.

I received a copy from Voracious Readers in exchange for an honest review. In all honesty, this was ok. It wasn’t wasn’t what I was expecting, more supernatural stuff than I like. But, the characters were good, the concept was great, and I finished it. With that said, more details in scenes other than the dream sequences would have been great, along with more basic research on all things American. Anyway, I liked it and am happy to review it.

This book is a unique story, the story certainly peeked my interest, it’s a romantic thriller, however after about half way through, I got bored around chapter 20, I picked the book back up a few weeks later and around chapter 28 it picked up again, now I’m not into romance books but this one was okay, just slightly long winded in the middle. Not sure I’m going to read book two, if your looking for something different, this book is for you.

An interesting premise that sadly fell flat.

I received a copy from voracious readers only for an honest review.

I struggled with this as it was poorly formatted making it difficult for the story to flow. I felt the style of writing was more YA , although the subject matter wasn't.

It was almost like the writer couldn't decide what type of story he wanted to write, erotic fiction or a crime/thriller? The blend of the two just didn't work for me.

I received a copy of the book for review from Voracious Readers Only. It is very rare that I don't finish a book, even if I have to struggle through it. I found the story line unbelievable, even if one were to believe in the supernatural. I didn't find the characters likeable or their behaviour logical in the circumstances.

My first thought was "This needs a good edit". But I had a bigger challenge - I found the story too contrived, with no appropriate build up, and the main characters to be, well, silly (yes, I realise they are hypnotised but STILL!).

Unfortunately I had to give up.

Received this from the author via Voracious Readers & sadly couldn’t get through it. Husband & wife characters weren’t believable considering what they were going through. Really interesting concept that could have been a great story had it gone in a different direction. A little too much focus on the “erotic dreams” aspect. Not a bad read...just not for me.

This one was a big hit or miss. I feel that there were several details that didn't have to be as descriptive as it was...some of them seemed such minor details but yet they were given such a long descriptive detail. But there were some details/events that I wished the author would have expanded on.
But other than that, it was a pretty good read.
