Amazing. This is the real thing.

I wanted to read this series because of a bunch of reasons:

1. The title is poetical and beautiful. It stuck and couldn't forget about it ever since.
2. The covers are suggestive and artsy.
3. Kou Yoneda's style agrees with me.
4. Shady environment: the Japanese mafia.
5. One of the MCs is impotent. The other one is a masochist. I wanted to see how the hell this would be sorted out.

Yes, I kind of expected this to epically explode in my very face, yet it didn't.

So...

Yashiro is yakuza. He's also an teasing irreverent masochist who has been secretly pinning his best (and only) friend from high school.

Doumeki is an ex-con, and an ex-police officer, who intercedes in one of Yashiro's 'scenes'. He's also impotent. Nothing can scratch his imperturbable armor. Or does it?

Yashiro takes him as his bodyguard (although he finds other uses in him) and loves provoking him in all ways he can think of. Sexually mostly, and the non-answer he receives from Doumeki only spurs him on even more.

Strangely enough, there is a compelling atmosphere in this story. The characterization is incredible, and their attachment to each other may be deeper than it seems at first. Even when they are unable to meet in the middle.

Or are they?

What can I say other than it's a Masterpiece. Been reading it since I was in university and now I've owned all the published volumes and waiting for the English edition for Vol. 8. I don't usually read mafia stories but I'm glad I decided to give this one a try. I love Yashiro and Doumeki and I really hope they will get their happy ending

Okay......so I tore myself from Batman online fanfics for long enough to read.....yaoi manga.

This first volume is quite slow burn but the artwork is nice and although I never like the yakuza yaoi genre, still I like the storyline and how the characters' emotion and traumas are played out through the storytelling. Now I understand why some of my net friends like it so much, 4.8 stars.

Judge me. Judge the hell out of me but I could not put this down.

Okay, so this is a Yaoi Manga. Obviously. And by that cover, you know exactly what you're getting. There are quite a few sex scenes in this series and none of them loving or romantic.

This is either the 4th or the 5th manga I've read and I this is my favorite! Hear me out.

** Mentions of sexual assault **

This is the story of Yashiro, the leader Shinseikai and Chikara Doumeki, a former cop who becomes Yashiro's bodyguard. At first, Yashiro gets off on trying to make Doumeki uncomfortable because he finds him attractive. He's speaks very frankly of his sex life and has sex with men in front of him. Again, these encounters aren't at all loving and romantic. Yashiro gets off on sex where he's basically treated like an object. His partners can be cruel, uncaring, and rough. At times, it was kind of hard to read.

Yashiro was sexually assaulted by his stepfather as a child and that changed the way he views relationships. Doumeki witnessed his father sexually assaulting his younger sister and that changed the way he views sex, in general. Yashiro is a masochist and shies away from his partners getting too attached and Doumeki is impotent. It's a formula for a relationship that you might think shouldn't work at all, but I think it's kind of obvious how this would work.

I won't spoil what comes later, although I've read much further than this volume.

Doumeki wanted to work for Yashiro because he finds him beautiful. This series is full of Doumeki doing everything he can to stay by Yashiro's side and it's really moving. Despite several situations that should be off putting, Doumeki stays and dedicates his life to trying to keep Yashiro safe. It's one of the most complex, endearing relationships I've ever read. Ever.

Anyway, this isn't for everyone. I mean that because some of the themes may be a bit much for someone. Judge me all you want but I put other books down to keep reading this one because I had to know what happened next.

5 stars.

Trigger warning: mention of rape, abusive/toxic relationships, BDSM.

Yashiro is a powerful man in a mafia group, and he is twisted to the bone. Ever since he was a kid, he was abused by his step-father, therefore he grows up into a man that likes to get off from violent acts, and pain inflicted to him. He’s totally a masochist.

His bodyguard, Doumeki, used to be a cop but something bad happened and he went to jail for a couple of years. Now he works for a mafia boss and despite he likes Yashiro, he’s an impotent man.

On the other hand, we have one of Yashiro’s friends, someone who is a doctor but who has a kink for scars. And who’s now dating a guy who is way younger than him, absolutely oblivious to Yashiro’s crush on him.

Now, to be quite honest, I don’t think this story is for me. I mean, I loved the art style and I want to watch the anime adaptation too, but the plot is probably too dark for my taste.

I couldn’t connect with any character and I’m not really sure I want to get invested in a story that has so many wicked traits. I like my romances to be healthy, so perhaps it was my mistake choosing this manga because I had read the mangaka’s previous works and they were sweet and entertaining. And this was not.

Read it for the #Queerious and #Prideathon readathons.

A beautiful story about beautiful person. The manga itself is well-developed and interesting. I really think that even a person, who generally dislikes yaoi, should give it a try.
The main character is actually my favorite character of all times. He's "twisted beyond repair", as he said himself, yet he calmly accepts everything that happened to him. Imho, he's not scared of something like death and, as you'll find out in the process of reading this masterpiece, physical and moral pain... regardless of this, even though, he probably wouldn't be considered "normal" by many, I think, he's the most unflappable, realistic and composed character there is.
One more thing I love about this manga is that you don't see a simplistic idea of "boy falling in love with another boy", like in majority of BL. Here you have a storyline, which travels to Yashiro's past, in author's attempt to show the reader not just one clear picture, but many nuances, which can formulate your opinion about his surroundings, his first love and, of course, the main character himself.

This is my second favorite manga of all time.
Yashiro is this kind of character you want to get to understand completely but it's almost impossible so you get frustrated and just want to know more about him.
Not a cliché yaoi, good plot and thanks to this manga I now know more about the Yakuzas that I'd like to know, lol.

Beautiful, interesting manga.

Aqui estan todos c* de la cabeza. Mucho s* childhood. Depressing.

Reading the summary as copied from mangaupdates made me laugh. It isn't wrong, actually, but what's missing is the bit where it mentions that this is one of the best BL manga ever written.

Yashiro is a yakuza boss who is also seriously masochistic. Domeki is his new bodyguard who is impotent and joined Yashiro's group mostly because he liked the way Yashiro looks.

While these are the basic facts, writing them down like this makes this manga sound nowhere near as good as it is. First of all, it shouldn't be dismissed - or taken - as a simple kink story. The way these two - both deeply screwed up - men interact is so different from 99.9% of all other stories I've read. Yashiro is an incredible fascinating character, and "Tadayoedo Shizumazu, Saredo Naki mo Sezu", one of this story's prequels that luckily is also included in this volume, never fails to floor me. (I actually really like that "Tadayoedo Shizumazu, Saredo Naki mo Sezu" and "Don't stay gold" frame the main story.) Since "Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai" isn't finish yet, I have to reserve a final judgment, but "Tadayoedo Shizumazu, Saredo Naki mo Sezu" is definitely one of the most powerful stories I've ever read in any medium.

This isn't the kind of story you just read and that's that. It's the kind of story that makes you think about people, how they become what they are, how difficult it is to let yourself love sometimes. It's really, really worth reading.

Edited on June 28, 2016: Rereading this and impressed by Yashiro all over again. He is one of the most fascinating characters I've ever read. This is a superb manga.

The beauty of speaking several languages as a manga fan is that you are able to find (and buy! and read!) awesome (BL) manga.
Now, BL mangas aren't hard to find in English, but most of them are crappy pieces of smutty porn that I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole (that doesn't just go for BL - I don't read the josei type smut or hentai either because they all suck).
For a long time, I've been searching for a deep (no pun intended) BL manga that actually had a good story and great characters. Actually, I was expecting a manga equivalent of the epic geniusness that is Special Forces - Soldiers. Soldiers has spoiled me and I wanted something equally perfect - and found it.

Saezuru Tori ha Habatakanai (The Songbird doesn't fly) is a masterpiece, and that's really all that needs to be said about it.

And I'm very smug that since I speak French I'll be holding my very own copy in my greedy hands this september.

This is dark, smutty and not for everyone.

But Yoneda-sensei sure knows how to hurt me masterfully.
This is one of my favorites. Yakuza themes are often sad, perfect for the emotionally weak.

First of all, the characters. Yashiro and Doumeki, are so beautiful together.
Expressionless, charming, gorgeous specime-
How the artist portrayed emotions by a slight change in expression, eyes full of emotions: sadness, longing, pining, love, hurt, embarrassment, fear... it's so minimal yet expressive. Chef's kiss!

I'm weak for broken characters.
Yashiro is so sooo... in his own words, "full of contradictions".
His stepdad abused him. Raped him. Behind his mother's sleeping figure.
He became a masochistic public toilet.
And yet, he is kinder than anyone.
And I guess it takes someone in pretty much the same boat to notice this.
Let me tell you that Yashiro being shy is so adorable and painful both at the same time. Didn't know that was possible.

Yashiro doesn't know how it is to be treated gently like you're someone precious. It's no wonder he doesn't do it with someone important to him. Being loved is so foreign and scary to him, this poor soul. But with his line of work, it's just easier having nothing to lose.

He sure panics and runs away faster than the speed of light.

Doumeki is an ex-cop and because he's an honest man, he accidentally found himself in the Yakuza.
When he met Yashiro, his plans of getting out were like naahhh~
"He's so beautiful even just standing there. If people like him are in the Yakuza, it can't be that bad". -same hun, same.
He is impotent because he's so pure. I suffer and wince with him every time we see Yashiro hurt and handled carelessly like trash.

Being the way they are, cautious and scared, respectful and considerate around each other with incredible self-restraint, this is a painful slow burn and it continues indefinitely (so much that I want to volunteer as staff for faster releases).

this manga is so different from the other yaoi manga
Yoneda Kou managed to transform a cliche yakuza theme into such a special story that makes me shiver at each new chapter.Yashiro's personality is what makes this story so interesting and I love how slow this story is progressing.
i highly recommend this series! it's one of the better and sweet ones out there. XD

Yo, a mi ritmo.
