Identity Thief

Rate this book
Out of work, down on your luck, desperate for cash. What if you could get rich with a few strokes of the keyboard? All you have to do is become someone else.

But nothing’s that simple in this fast-paced, psychological thriller. As the story dangerously snowballs downhill, the characters discover how losing themselves can lead to duplicity, blackmail, and sometimes murder.

JP Bloch’s darkly comic, edgy exploration of the mystery of the self will keep you guessing until the last word. You’ll come away agreeing with the identity thief that “the biggest mistake you can make is thinking you know who you are.”

JP Bloch writes dark (sometimes funny) psychological thriller and mysteries. Sometimes he adds a dash of the supernatural. JP believes that life's problems can be a wellspring for creativity. Don't get mad, write a novel!

JP likes to write in the alienist genre—loners and anti-heroes who have trouble feeling connected to other people.

His turn-offs include Brussels sprouts, bigotry, and people who think life is simple. He enjoys people who have gained wisdom from hardship, and ask questions more than they assume answers. Tumultuous skies are preferred over sunny ones.

What a great read...not what I usually read but boy this was a good one you don’t want to miss out on! I totally recommend this book to everyone, no matter what your normal "type of book" is. The plot was masterful, the character were engaging, and the mystery and drama that unfolded sucked me in from the first page.

JP Bloch has woven a story with twists and turns that keep you turning the pages to find out what is going to happen next and just how far down the rabbit hole these characters were going to fall. And then, just when you think things can’t get any more out of control, he throws something else into the mix to stir things up and make you rethink what you thought you already knew.

When Dr. Jesse Falcon has his identity stolen, his life begins a downward spiral. His identity thief has his own set of problems, and when their lives begin to intersect at more points than just Dr. Falcon’s bank account, things go from crazy to extreme and everywhere in between. No one is who they seem, everyone has secrets, and when all the cards are finally played, you’re not sure just who is going to have the winning hand.

I highly recommend this book to everyone – you will not be disappointed!

I was given a copy of this book from the publisher for an honest review.

Can I just say Oh, My Gosh, Oh , My Gosh about a thousand times over this book was fantastically brilliant. I just could not get enough... I would pick it up and put it down only to pick it right back up and explain to my husband what the book was all about. The twists and turns in this book had me in a whirlwind of excitement.
Oh what a web we weave trying to become someone we are not. A computer geek who lost his job, wife and family takes off to start over and become what he really wanted to be in life a psychiatrist. Infatuated by how easy it was to steal another persons identity he was living the dream. while the real Dr. was buffing his patients and getting reamed in the back end by the computer geek himself. The fake Dr. wanted the best for his son Scotty so he had him stay with his mother while he tried to get his new identity up to par and figure out a new business for himself, after being part of a bank robbery the fake Jesse found a new love interest in Sequoia who helped launch his new career Mc Shrink.com.
The real Dr. just couldn't get over how the FBI didn't really want to help him much and was eventually told to change his own identity so he became an investigator and tried to solve his own case. Therefore being hired by Betsy to find her ex- boyfriend and real father of her son Scotty the real Dr. was onto something and so the story starts to unravel. I don't want to give to much away!! You have got to get this book for yourself and read it...
Let me tell you there were plenty of times in the book that I wanted to wring Betsy's neck for being such a Bitch!!! I am happy she got what she deserved... A true suspenseful thriller tied up with sex, murder, lies and deceit.

I had no idea upon starting this book what I was getting into. After reading, I would tag it with psychological thriller, dark comedy, karma, murder, twists.

It begins with a nobody. Honestly, I don't even remember his name being mentioned at all. I'm sure this was done on purpose to really bring home the idea that no one cares about him. He is at the bottom of the pile in life. No one looks up to him, not his wife, best friend, son, employer, peers...He's always been the one stepped on to help the others reach their goals.
Mr. Nobody, like something you'd scrape off your shoe without a second thought.

I'd always been utterly disposable, like a used condom or last year's cell phone.

Finally a series of events causes a 180° turn in his personality, or was he always this man really?
I'm two different people. One guy does the right thing, while this other guy calls the first guy a chicken shit for not doing the wrong thing that I wanted to do instead.

Dr. Jesse Falcon is so also brought into the story. We know right off what a creep he is. His outward appearance is completely opposite from Mr. Nobody. He's totally all about himself.

There are many side characters. Some are ditzy and useless. Some are danger in disguise. Some are not who I thought they were.
Had I noticed this sooner, my life would've turned out much differently.

"What's next?" I wasn't someone who could be trusted, so why should anyone else be any different?

I'm the type of person that usually can figure out where a plot is headed. This book totally shocked me in a very good way. I loved it. It's hard for me to describe the feel of the story. It's different, kind of in a Double Indemnity/Arsenic and Old Lace/Rear Window mix sort of way except the reader is left out of the know about what's going on behind the scenes, and of course it's during modern times. Certain hints are dropped all along, but I still didn't catch on. I absolutely recommend Identity Thief and will be looking forward to reading more from J.P. Bloch.

Who thought stealing someone’s identity could turn your own messy life even messier than your own life? Even worse when fate manages to come full circle colliding the real and fake person.

The fake appears to be a normal guy, married with a cheating and a young son leading the typical life until he finds himself out of his computer job. In debt with a mortgage as they live like most people living paycheck to paycheck while the wife keeps spending more money.

Out of a job for a while, his wife asks for a divorce as she moves in with his best friend Biff who comes from a privilege lifestyle. Betsey admits that she has always been sleeping with Biff even minutes before their wedding and that their son Scotty is really Biff.
He goes one day to confront Biff especially after he hears that he been sexually molesting his son Scott, Before he confronts him, he and his son ends up killing him accidentally. As they clean up the body, he takes him to his mom for safe keeping.
He manages to steal money from a Dr. Jesse Falcon a psychiatrist at first $20,000 to cover his mortgage on the house that his wife is living in. When he tries to cash the certified check at the bank, he ends up in the middle of a bank robbery where he managed to take several bullets and survives.

He ends up after being released meeting up with a woman who he saw at the robbery. She lets him move in temporary and they fall in love. He then steals more money to set up an online site as help line and makes money from it.

Meantime the real Dr. Jesse Falcon life is a mess as he compulsively have sex with his female clients and others except with his wife. He has a college daughter whom he adores and dotes on. He has one female client who is obsessed with him and she becomes pregnant with his child as he tries not to have anything to do with her. She later tries to commit suicide but survives and gives birth premature to their child.

Slowly their world begin to clash, when the real Dr. Falcon gets hire by the fake ex-wife Betsey to find the missing boyfriend Biff and he realizes who stole his identity. Things quickly go out of hand for the both of them when all comes tumbling down.

A mystery that you think you know the answers but all is not what it seems as each gets their own ending. How one lie can slowly snowball quickly,

Ok, this has to be one of the craziest books I've read in a long time. This is the kind of hidden gem worthy of becoming a Coen Brothers' movie.

What do you do when you are in dire need of big cash, trying to divorce a crazy woman, and your illegitimate child is in the middle? Steal someone's identity, duh!

Dr. Jesse Falcon is a successful psychologist whose life is about to change. He's financially stable, creditworthy, and has built a good life for himself, his wife, and their only child, Sabrina. His life turns to chaos as he sees his money disappear. He's unable to focus on other important matters, and everything around him seems to collapse. He's not very good at managing stress, and this may add a few extra layers of complications to his already crumpling life. Is Dr. Falcon a victim? for sure. Did he deserve all he got? You'll have to be the judge about that.

The thief is your average, kind-of-handsome, sort-of-a-loser, pitiful, average Joe. He's just doing the best he can to be a good dad. He loves his son, and he'll do whatever he needs to get full custody and keep each other safe. He's a thief with a good heart. He knows what he's doing is wrong, but he's planning to pay it all back. Pinky promise with a cherry on top I love you. But, will he?

Identity Thief is a dark, unexpected satire where victims and villains collide in an impossible series of events. Good stuff! Thanks, Heather for the recommendation.

I love it when a book comes along and you are in JUST the right mood to read and enjoy it. This was some off-the-wall, crazy shit. But it just worked, and I devoured every morsel of it. We have the protagonist, whom you're supposed to hate, but for some reason you just feel a little sorry for. Maybe it has to do with the fact that his mother, the BEY-otch that she is, has never provided a loving and nurturing environment and he instantly clings to the first woman who shows him a hint of affection. We have his nasty, self-serving ex-wife who gets her comeuppance. Don't forget the good-for-nothing so-called childhood friend of Mr. Protagonist....he's a real tool. Then we have the Victim of Identity Thief himself, Dr. Jesse Falcon. Oooohhhhh, what a douche! Everything in this book is implausible. But it's such great entertainment, you overlook it and just enjoy the ride. I have to say it wasn't the BEST ending, and that's why it's just 1 * shy of 5. But it was still pretty damn good.

Unlike some other reviewers, I won't discuss the storyline so as not to ruin it for you, or the extraordinary ending which is almost too clever by half. Author JP Bloch is a very skilled writer who's also very smart and very observant when it comes to human nature and mannerisms. Reading this book where no one is who he or she seems is like trying to put together a liquid puzzle where the pieces are continually shifting. As a bonus, Mr. Bloch punctuates his tale of murder, deception, conspiracy and betrayal with lines which are laugh out loud funny. All in all, an amazing and entertaining reading experience that will leave your head spinning.

I'm glad that I found this Mature Adult Mystery book on Reading Deals Review Club where I was provided with a free copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

The book made me think of a quote. I forget exactly how the quote goes or who said it but this is how I remember it - "Oh what a tangled web we weave when at first we practice to deceive." I wonder if Mr. Bloch had this in mind when he wrote this book. The main characters find themselves embroiled in so many lies that even they can not decipher which is real and which they created or perhaps it was something they dreamed.

Who is the deceiver and who is the deceived anyway?

I love the subtle twists and turns as well as the completely surprise ending. Well I never saw it coming anyway.

If you love mysteries that keep you guessing what will happen next and aren't afraid of Sex, Violence, and Language then this is the book for you.

"I was provided with a free copy of this book so I could give an honest review."

I was drawn in to the book with the first page! With all the twists and turns. When I thought I had something figured out.....BAM another shocking revelation occurs. I enjoyed the way it kept me wondering and being in suspense about what would happen next. There were so much to LIKE and HATE about the characters. Never did understand why grandmom didn't keep Scottie. But in the end I can only say: "Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned."

Once you have started this psychological thriller you will not put it down. This quick read with lots of twists has kept me captivated from page one and held my attention through every chapters till I reached the unexpected ending. I simply loved it.

The story is structured in alternating chapters between the view point of the identity thief and the victim, Dr. Jesse Falcon. The plot has layers upon layers of deceit; no one is who they seem. Nothing is simple in this fast-paced, sometime darkly comic thriller. The pieces of the puzzle are continually shifting and at every corner there is constant barrage of shocks, so forget trying to guess the outcome.

This is a cleverly and brilliantly roller-coaster ride filled with emotional and scarring issues. A story of a thief and victim both trying to stay two steps ahead of the other is no less attention grabbing, this one tops all. What set this story from others is you are soon thrust into a world of action with Dr. Jesse Falcon whose identity is stolen going through endless hoops to find the person causing him so much turmoil. You learn and understand the main characters from flashbacks and from their actions and what they are thinking. The supporting cast also have their own plans lurking in the shadows. The narration moves along smoothly making this story easy to read. Well-done.

This was a fun read, the author alternated between 2 first person POV's and this made for an interesting experience. Both the characters were engaging, I found myself involved in each of their plights, and the story moved quickly. I'm not giving it 5 stars because the ending is too packaged up and explanatory. That being said, there are some exciting scenes, catchy dialogue (especially when the mother is involved), and intriguing self talk on the part of both main characters.

All in all a good experience, would recommend to anyone who likes twists and first person POV.

I read 204 pages of the 245 page book before I FORCED myself to put it down and eat dinner. Doc Bloch has a very creative and twisted mind, and he used it well when writing Identity Thief. A down and out loser steals Dr Jesse Falcon's identity, and his money. Dr. Jesse makes it his life's mission to find and destroy him. The story line is similar to a dog chasing it's tail so fast that it loses it's balance, and crashes to the floor. In the end there are no innocents, and the dog finally does catch his tail. If you like to read, you'll love this 5 star novel.

This comic mystery was a lightweight bit of fluff which was a very quick read. It had a fun, breezy tone and it took only a few hours from start to finish. The plot depends on a series of unbelievable coincidences, which are ludicrous if you might be tempted to think of this as serious literature, but given the comic setting, was OK. I loved the last chapter where all of my expectations were overturned, with a terrific surprise ending. If it was possible, I would give this book three and a half stars.

There's a LOT....I mean a LOT going on in this story. Lots of twists and turns and secrets and revealings. All leading to a conclusion I did not expect. Some characters you will like...some you won't and even that will switch along the way. The best way to summarize the story is by this quote: "Sometimes all you can do with a man is get back at him."

This is a great read. It is a simple story but with many twists and turns making the simple, complicated. You'll keep turning the pages because once you think you have it figured out, SURPRISE, you're wrong. So many puppets and puppeteers in this story, figuratively at is. You will enjoy this "mystery."

Very twisted story.

Many liars, so many secrets in this story. Children growing up with screwed up parents. If this is called living. Had to push myself to finish this book. Hope Scotty will grow up to be decent person.

"Identity Thief" (2014) by JP Bloch is a quirky, bizarre novel that starts well but wears out its welcome as it goes along. The premise is interesting, telling the parallel stories about an identity thief and his victim. Unfortunately, neither is very likable. The novel grows more improbable and difficult to follow, resulting in a final chapter in which a third character has to tie up the many loose ends. Not recommended.

Reading a mystery book written by someone with a PhD and teaching Criminology had me on edge. What if I hated it? Would that be an insult of their intelligence to them? The good news is, I did not hate this book. "Identity Thief" is written by JP Bloch and is the tale of multiple people who become connected because of one stealing another's identity and how identity theft effected their lives. I promise you... when you think you know the outcome... you don't.

Identity Thief follows the story of thief and victim as both try to stay two steps ahead of the other. With a twist or turn (or both) around every corner, there was a constant barrage of shocks and new information to keep you guessing. Dr. Jesse Falcon, the victim in the story, shows the true colors of someone desperate for information.

Bloch was able to keep me interested, even at times I was falling away from the book. I found the constant "bad news" in this book was a bit unrealistic, but never having been in this situation, I can't say it could never happen. I like reading stories and watching movies of things that could really happen, and parts of this story did not make me a believer. However, this was also written from experience, so it's possible I simply can't fathom something so horrible happening to me.

With that being said, the story hooked me and made me want to keep reading. The sick and twisted minds of people today could probably pull something like this off. Bloch kept the story interesting and switched between characters so you had a realistic timeline of what was happening and how one's behavior caused chaos in the others' lives. All in all a good story. Kind of terrifying if you imagine this actually happening to you or someone you know.

I give this three stars, as it was interesting and held my attention, but at points made me think the multiple scenarios couldn't all happen to one person. Almost unrealistic. A major benefit was I was not able to guess the ending, which is hard for me to find. Expertly written, flows smoothly, and intriguing to the very end. Even with 3 stars I would definitely recommend this to friends and followers.

You know the old saying, don't judge a book by its cover? Well I certainly learnt that lesson from this title. I would never have picked it up in a book shop just because the cover didn't appeal to me, but I'm so pleased I tried it.

It begins with an average guy leading an average life. His wife is cheating on him with his best friend and he loses his job. Without his paycheque, Betsy, the wife, decides to kick him out and move in with her rich lover. There's no way he's going to leave his beloved son with them so they leave in the middle of the night. With no job or real home, he doesn't know how he'll keep on going, but then living by the book has never gotten him far before.

Whilst staying at his mother’s, some mail arrives for the previous owner and the idea to steal an identity becomes a reality within a few clicks of a computer. He becomes the very successful Dr. Jesse Falcon and lives very comfortably off his money. Unfortunately, the real Jesse Falcon isn't a very nice guy, the cops are looking for him, and it gets very messy indeed. The end is a twist I didn't see coming at all.

Minor spoilers ---

I wanted to give this book 5 stars. I was so enthralled for the first three quarters of the book. And then the last quarter sort of went in a different direction than what I would have expected, and I'm still not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

I don't know why I didn't like the fact the two main characters became friends. Obviously, that needed to happen for the rest of the story to work, but it sort of seemed out of left field with the writing. And then the last chapter summarizes everything that was going on 'behind the scenes' the whole time and while it all came together, I almost would have rather they included that back story line throughout the story itself.

Other than that, this is a great book and I still enjoyed it despite the minor things above.
