Queen Of Spades

The best way to describe Queen of Spades is an Antiquated Hybrid— a contemporary author whose writings have a down-to-earth resonance to anyone who reads them.

Since the age of eleven, Queen of Spades’ flowed with the fire of ideas indicative of rhythm inundated with stanzas. She made her writing debut as a presenter and poet in the anthology Soulful Branches: Words and Sounds. Her other poetry works include: Reflections of Soul, the Eclectic collection (Skin Edition and Beyond the Skin), the Spaded Truths collection (Themes and Proclamations and Life-O-Suction) and Private Pain: Amidst These Ashes.

Queen of Spades also collaborates in subjects she is passionate about. She provided works in the April 2014 poetry anthology Words of Fire and Ice by Durham Editing and E-books. In addition, she partnered with fellow author MJ Holman on two works addressing the stigma of mental illness: The Sea of Conscience and Waves to Light.

Storytelling took spotlight alongside poetry in Queen’s literary evolution. She has written three independent short stories: “Taint on Religion”, “Mr. Bradley’s Garden”, and “When Summer Lingers”. Furthermore, she has participated in a number of short story compilations, such as Continuous Drips, Concordant Vibrancy I, II, and III, and the Divergent Ink series (Crackles of the Heart).

Some tout Queen of Spades is a Poet of the People. Others classify her as a Life Writer. The primary things that remains constant is her dedication to contemporary creativity while remaining true to herself.

All right, I realize that I'm gushing over this book, and I am. But it's probably because I've had such bad reading experiences as of late, that when I was asked to ARC read Continuous Drips by The Collective, I was highly impressed.

So, "What exactly is Continuous Drips?" you ask? It is a short story anthology comprised of 3 authors, each telling 3 short stories.

In my perspective Continuous Drips is an eclectic mix of entertaining, fun and provocative short stories. My most favorite thing about it was that each author represented herself very well in their stories. I could see their individual style, and I loved it. This anthology has something, I think, for everyone.
There is Da'Kharta Rishing's dark yet enthralling stories, my particular favorite was The Kutters. Mostly because as I writer/author I could relate to it.

Then there was Synful Desire's seductive yet somewhat chipper and captivating writing style. She's so down to earth in her writing, yet she can make the readers laugh, cry or become raptured. Love it! My personal favorite in her collection was Derailed Endurance. It made swimming sound sexy. Gotta love it.

And lastly there was Queen of Spades. Now here is what I admire the most about Queen... she started off as a poet. Anyone who has transitioned from one genre to another can tell you how hard it can be, unless he/she is naturally multi-genre. The biggest fete to overcome is going from poetry to stories, yet upon reading Queen's short stories you couldn't even tell. It seemed like she was an old pro at story telling. Just a marvelous job. While I adored all of her short stories, I have got to admit that Util was my very favorite. I think it's the message behind the story. Very powerful and compelling stuff.

All in all, I would say that Continuous Drips is a book that you can keep on reading. Something that you can set on your nightstand and pick up whenever you're in the mood for a quick yet great read. These ladies won't let you down.

I highly recommend that you give Continuous Drips a try.

I received an Advanced Review Copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is a collection of short stories (Nine in total) from three personalities; Da'Kharta Rising (Unrest, Omitted, The Kutters), Synful Desire (Derailed Endurance, Final Prep to Happiness, FAN-tasy Island), and Queen of Spades (Misfortune, Afro Shock, Util).

Each collection of three is different. The reader will find darker tales that make them think, those with slightly more heat under the collar, and others with a twist. Each tale is short and easy to read, and folds seamlessly into the whole. I like the alternative offerings found here, which are a bit like eating an up-market three-course meal, rather than a single TV dinner where all the flavours are the same. Chances are, this little book has something for everyone.

An easy book to dip into when you don't have the time to sit down and read a full novel.

Have you ever picked up an anthology and read all of the stories then set it aside and forgotten all about it? I'm sure you have--everyone has.
Then, have you ever read an anthology that you just knew you'd be keeping for a long time, just to dip back in and enjoy your favorite stories over and over?
THAT is what Continuous Drips is like. It's a treasure in book form. You have some stories that touch the heart, others that make the hairs stand on the back of your neck, and others that keep you thinking long after you've finished it.
My personal favorite story was Afro Shock by Queen of Spades. There is something so enticing about her prose. I think that the poet in her shines through incredibly in that story, but most importantly it has a moral--an important one.
But I won't ruin it for you. I'll let you all take a look at Continuous Drips for yourself.
Da'Kharta Rising, Synful Desire and Queen of Spades have put together an assorted collection of stories that will not disappoint.

Two thumbs up!!

Note: This review will only be based on the writes of Da'Kharta Rising and Synful Desire.

Have you ever perceived a particular authors' works in one way but then you see material which expands your thinking? This is how I felt after reading the works by these two authors.

Da'Kharta Rising isn't just a person who writes about tragedy. There is a system behind the darkness and the mystery she strives to convey. The twists in each story goes from "What did I just read" in Unrest to "Oh my God!" in Omitted to "It's a mystery even to me" in The Kutters. The Kutters I couldn't get enough of ... a very strong write from start to finish.

I always predicted that Synful Desire has more to her arsenal than just erotica. She is a flashlight on the quirks of connection. This is not to say that the erotic components aren't blushworthy but that there is a thickness of purpose you will miss if all you see is the sexual moments. With Derailed Endurance, the ending leaves more questions than answers, and it was terrific to know that there will be a more detailed "Derailed". I confess to not quite knowing what to make of Final Prep to Happiness although I shared the excitement of the main character. FAN-tasy Island reminded me of the same story telling beat as Delectable Things but the difference is that "Island" has trinkets of surprise that sneak up on you while dabbling with comedy here and there.

This is a strong showing by these two ladies and work I highly recommend, even if I were not part of the collection. Both are well on their way to blossoming beyond their original genres.

In this review, I won't be speaking about any of my stuff, just Synful Desire and Queen of Spades.

IMHO, this is some of the strongest writing I've seen by the Royal One. My personal favorite was Misfortune, and there's so many reasons why that I spit on it at my blog. "Afro Shock" made me want to pull on some bell bottoms and grab me an Afro. Pyruva is smart and sassy, my kind of female. Util made me laugh but also nod because the events were so real to me.

Synful Desire is no slouch either. "FAN-tasy Island" kept my interest while "Derailed Endurance" got me so riled up that I was outraged at the way it ended. She better not keep me waiting too long for the more completed version.

One collection worth having, real talk.

This is a very fascinating read, short stories of varying depths, and twists. I am not a fan of erotica, and so I will hold my comments on the stories in the collection that were simply too explicit for my comfort. With that said, of the rest of the stories, a few stood out for me. The Kutters is one of them, and the other one is, Misfortune. These two were extraordinary reads.

The author’s writing style was unique. This style made it difficult for me to remember the details of some of the stories after I read them. It is a type of rebellious style that is evident, not so much in the actions of the characters, but in the way the stories were told. Sometimes, I had to read a story over to follow the thread, also because I could not visualize the story. In all it was a very unique and interesting read,
