A deadly, twisted game on camera disrupts a friend reunion at a remote estate, forcing two estranged exes to team up against other desperate couples in this love story and thriller. Who wins and what survives, love or fear?
Cole is a lonely, burned-out dentist after experiencing great loss—and so he jumps at the opportunity to attend a friend reunion at a “technology detox” retreat in the thick forest of remote Washington.
All his old friends are there, wealthier and coupled up even more than back then.
And her. Rosy. The woman whose heart he broke. Still writing and reading. Still knocking the breath out of him. But then suddenly there’s a danger in the dead of night. The get-together gets derailed. And lovers, estranged or otherwise, team up to survive a deadly game on camera, and see the dawn . . .
If you’ve ever wanted to watch a bunch of emotionally stunted rich people repeatedly punch each other in the face while spiraling into chaos at 2am—congrats, this book is your Roman Coliseum. And it’s weirdly addictive.
At first, the “activity” part had me blinking like an out-of-sync modem—technical and occasionally confusing, but not enough to derail the story. You might not always know exactly what’s happening, but you feel it, and that’s enough to stay intrigued.
Now, let’s talk characters. Absolute trashbags. Entitled, violent, and morally allergic. I spent a good chunk of the book mentally side-eyeing the entire cast and quietly praying they’d all knock each other out. And yet—I was hooked. It’s like watching a reality show where everyone deserves a slap but you still binge every episode.
Except Cole. Sweet, humble Cole. He’s the human equivalent of a warm cup of tea in a room full of espresso-fueled gremlins. He starts the book with a raw deal, and honestly, I just wanted to wrap him in a blanket and tell him everything would be okay (even though I knew it wouldn’t).
The second half? Unputdownable. Plot twists fly in like bats out of hell, the pace cranks up, and suddenly I was glued to the pages, emotionally invested despite wanting to strangle half the cast.
Final verdict: Messy, chaotic, and kind of brilliant. Like a car crash you can’t look away from—but with better dialogue. If you like your fiction sharp, dark, and morally grey with a twist of “WTF just happened?”—this is for you.
Avoid if you need likeable characters. Embrace it if you thrive on drama, violence, and just the tiniest sliver of hope wrapped in one poor guy named Cole.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I absolutely devoured this book. The switch in POVs had me unable to put it down as it all unfolded. The author did an amazing job at giving us the backstory, character development, and having me on the edge of my seat while I began to connect dots. Cole’s pov and grief had me connecting with him more than I expected and reading it as it unfolded and again connecting those dots had me sucked in. The ending was perfect, the storyline and how it was delivered was very unique and made it all the more suspenseful!
I felt the book started off slow and it had had a hard time keeping my attention. The slow burn was worth it though when the climax actually hit. There were so many twists and turns that even as an avid mystery and psych triller fan I never knew what was coming. I really enjoyed this read and think if your someone who’s into mystery and psych thrillers it’s a great quick read. Rosy and Cole’s romance plays a major part in the book but to call this a romance book would be injustice.
I enjoyed how this was written and the whole story! There were several twists I didn't see coming. I liked the flashbacks, however I did get a little lost on the timeline. Some parts didn't flow as smoothly, but it was still easy to understand and follow once you realized when and where it was.
All the characters had their own unique qualities and it definitely seemed to mimic any possible real-life relationships people may have with some they would call "friends" but if only money mattered.
I liked Cole as the main character and his backstory. The book starts off with an immediate hook with it's story telling and writing.
I’m not a big fan of mysteries because, to be honest, I find most of them quite obvious. For instance, I can’t believe someone is alive! Who would have thought? This one is pretty good, though. I love a good revenge plot. I’d give it 2.5 stars, but take that with a grain of salt because, as I mentioned, I’m not a big mystery / crime fan. I have yet to find a crime book where I’m completely 100% shocked and mind blown and I never would have guessed the ending. If you know one let me know.
I liked the premise of this book, it was a good story. It was a bit scattered and didn't flow very well, which made it hard to understand at times. Sometimes it felt like certain events weren't fully explained, or dots got connected that didn't quite make sense. A little more refinement would have improved it, but the heart of the story was interesting.
I found this author from a social media post. This was so well written and well edited. It surpassed expectations. I did not expect a suspense novel, it's not my usual genre, but this was well worth it!
