You've seen this character before. The heroine who isn't dealt the best cards in life; one who, despite the misery around her, presents herself as a scrappy survivor, a little resourceful and on top of all this...is a mother figure to her two younger siblings.
Unable to think straight, I end up on the back of a stranger’s Harley on my way to a place he calls Little Memphis.
I don’t believe in love at first sight. People who claim it happens to them are full of shit. What I feel ... is something ....[more] like an incorrigible need at first sight.Ford ReedHa. “Incorrigible need”? Imagine telling someone, I've fallen into “incorrible need” with you.” That's a taste of the surprising pluses I got while reading--great![]()
“You want her with us all the time. How long before you just move her shit in?”Pax and Ford were two brothers against the world; even being a part of an MC, they worked together, each trusted the other and no one else. They faced death at any moment with the jobs they did for the club. For Ford, women were a nice temporary attraction that he indulged in with less sleaze than his younger brother, Pax, who was decidedly more obnoxious and went through women, recklessly. However, Ford, whose POV the reader gets, immediately comes off as the silent type who got attention when he talked or made a decision. And when Ford meets Shay, a slip of a girl more years his junior than he usually went for, he decided he was going to just take.
“And if I do?”
“She’s cute,” Pax says, jumping into the bulldozer. “You’ll fuck her to death. Won’t be pretty.”Okay, so Pax has a point, actually two. Ford puts it on Shay alright, but he also becomes involuntarily addicted. No such ambiguity with Shay, because she knows almost immediately that Ford has the potential to be a loss her heart can't take. But she's willing and he's “incorribly [needy]”, so they let things simmer...while other things, harsh realities breathe cold fronts at their building relationship.
“Why let reality fuck up the fantasy? We’re not people who get many delusions in life. Let’s enjoy this one.”Shay may end up in Little Memphis, but she has left an integral part of herself behind. She is a young lady who faces the fight and takes chances, but on a base level, she just wants to be a someone who builds a life with the ones she loves. She's willing to have this at whatever cost, even if that means no Ford in her life.
“I give you heart trouble. You own my heart. I don’t know if that’s the same thing though.”Again, I was surprised I liked this biker/NA romance as much as I did. Sure, it misses the mark on secondary characters. Shay has a couple thoughts and moments with her younger brothers (who should have been featured more), and other than Pax, I found it hard to care about the other secondary characters, especially of the MC, and even with Pax, I had made up my mind that he wouldn't be an attractive hero to read in a second book(but oh, he is the next book!). Also, the world-building of the motorcycle club, outside conflict and criminal activity came off as a little stilted.
