Couples Session

Snowed in with her ex … and one more chance to work it out.

Couples counselor Vanessa never met a relationship problem she couldn’t solve—except for her own recent breakup. She’d been so sure Noah was the one, but after he ghosted her without an explanation, she’s completely moved on. She’s even starting a new relationships podcast, so she can help others avoid her mistakes. But a snowstorm leaves her stranded at work the night before Valentine’s Day, and the last person she wants to see shows up to tow her car.

Noah Green is the king of awkward conversation. After a lifetime of putting his foot in his mouth, he mostly stays quiet and works with his hands, managing his family’s appliance repair shop. He’d never really opened up to anyone before, until he met the woman of his dreams—and then lost her a few months later. If Vanessa knew about the family problems that made him break up with her, she’d never want him back anyway.

When Noah crashes his truck in the clinic parking lot, forcing them to spend the night there together, their scorching chemistry reignites by morning. A fragile truce leads them to try dating again, all while pretending to be just friends around Noah’s broken family. But family problems are harder to fix than appliances, and in the meantime, their fake not-dating starts to feel a lot like the real thing …

The premise of a relationship therapist starting up a podcast to help others communicate better in their relationships, only to realize she may be the problem in her string of failed relationships was fun as well as cathartic for our FMC Vanessa. I liked her as a main character, and felt her relationship issues were very relatable. MMC Noah was sweet. Once the reason he abruptly “ghosted” Vanessa comes to light, my feelings for him as book boyfriend material was cemented. The writing and pacing were on point. Definitely a recommendation, and can be read without reading book 1. Though I added it to my TBR list!

Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC and letting me share my opinion, for what it’s worth.

Therapist Vanessa is launching a podcast dealing with couples issues while being acutely aware that she herself has never had a successful long term relationship with a partner. When her most recent ex crashes back into her life after ghosting her, he triggers a reckoning of sorts and requests a do over. Their tentative steps back into each other’s lives cause Vanessa to reexamine all the things she thought she knew for certain about their time together and about herself.

It’s a sweet, spicy second chance romance that makes for a great beach or poolside read.

I received an advance reader copy from booksirens, and I’m sharing my honest review.

This was a sweet second chance romance between a couples therapist who wholeheartedly believes in love and romance but has terrible luck with relationships and a soft, shy handyman who has trouble speaking up for what he wants. They both carry trauma from their childhoods that cause them to act with fear and anxiety in their romantic relationships but watching them figure it out was sweet.

Content notes: parental abandonment, toxic marriage, on page separation

Vanessa couldn't believe this was her life. A relationship councillor and now trying to produce a podcast to help other couples with easy advice. Yet here she is the day before Valentine's and again still not in a stable relationship. After her last breakup which she still can't fully understand she really thought it was the real thing. Now snowed in her office and no way to walk so she takes the chance to drive but ends up in the ditch. Noah was hoping to just drop off Flowers and leave until he sees her car in a ditch he has to stop. Ten months and no contact how was she going to react to him. This is a story that shows how actions have consequences and even though its hard to put into words talking things through is always the best option. Can Vanessa forgive his ghosting her. Will Noah finally be able to talk about his family issues. Will they ever find their hea. This is the second book in this series and I can't recommend it enough

It was so comforting being back in the world of the Well Space! I love how we were able to truly connect with Vanessa and Noah. A beautifully written book that offered a new perspective on the inner workings of the heart and mind. I fell in love with the characters so quickly and the STEAM was steaming!!

Full disclosure: I did read an ARC of this (somewhat late, sorry!) and all opinions are my own.

This is book two in The Well Space series and it picks up around where the first book leaves off. We are following Ben's partner in the practice, Vanessa. Vanessa is a couples/family therapist with a heap of trauma of her own from childhood. (Which is why she became a therapist... but that's a whole other mess for her to work through.) She's trying to start a podcast about relationships, but feels like somewhat of a fraud, because while she counsels people in their relationships, she doesn't seem to find a lasting one of her own, though she thought she came close with her last boyfriend....

Our MMC is Noah, a Nice Guy, local appliance repair tech... and Vanessa's ex. He doesn't do well with communication and when his parents split up and his mom shows up on his doorstep, he drops everything to help her... and ends up ghosting Vanessa in the process. Ten months later, he finds himself driving to find Vanessa on Valentine's Day to bring her flowers and ends up getting snowed in with her at the office - only for both of them to find that they still have All The Feelings, but no clue how to address them.

I honestly found Vanessa a little hard to root for at times, because she is written so real, if that makes sense. I was frustrated with her that she would not try to see anything other than the worst case scenario and frequently seemed to dismiss her own inner voice telling her to look at something differently. That said, I was delighted every time she made some headway - and took her own advice. I liked Noah more, but also found it hard to not want to smack him upside the head when he would get too into what he thought everyone else wanted/needed from him and didn't actually listen to what was being said - from his mom and from Vanessa.

I think that S.M. Levine is brilliant at writing characters with flaws - real ones - and making them compelling enough to want to know what's going to happen to them. While I had my issues with each of the characters (and I did with the first one as well), I had to know what happens to them and that it all turns out okay. I also appreciated having a side character dealing with a chronic disease who insists and then shows that she is not incapacitated and actually can take care of themself and when needed, has a village of people to help.

All in all, I am definitely looking forward to book 3 when it comes out. :)

⭐ 3.75
🌶️ 1
🥵 Spicy chapters: 9, 13
📚 Tropes/Themes: second chance, forced proximity, snowed in, dad bod, repair shop owner MMC x therapist FMC, fake fake-dating
👀 Dual POV 3rd person
🧠 Triggers: mentions of parental abandonment, fughting and childhood trauma

💬 So I think maybe I was expecting something different than what it was. I'd classify this more like chick lit than a romance. Don't get me wrong, the romance was a huge part of the plot but if felt more like the focus was on the MCs processing their trauma and the romance was the reason for it.

I'm not saying anything is wrong with that, it just wasn't what I expected. I did enjoy the story! Second chance stories are some of my faves, and this one was really well done. It's so heartfelt and emotional watching them make their way back to each other.

And I loved loved LOVED that Noah was a blue collar guy with a dad bod. There really needs to be more MMCs like that.

And finally I promise I'm not trying to micromanage someone's writing- it's a story it's not that deep the direction the author takes the characters in- BUTTTT to be honest I can't really get past how it seems that a lot of Noah's issues were due to his abandonment trauma and it didn't play out as I expected. I genuinely thought that since she's a therapist Vanessa would've responded differently to him.

That aside, I think this is a sweet, swoony romance that paints a realistic picture of what relationships are like and highlights real life struggles with the need for constant and open communication.

Sometimes actions speak louder than words - all forms of communication are important and this story definitely carries the theme of such as a love language.

I loved the MMC, from his description of physical and non-physical characteristics. I think it’s also important to mention the growth the MFC went through from seeing all red flags to green flags.

I would recommend this story to anyone who’s ever been in love or looking for love. I’m excited for book 3! Thank you to the author for an advanced reader’s copy 🫶🏻

Honestly, this book was such a refreshing read after reading fantasy before it. It was intriguing and had an interesting storyline and was easy to follow. It was lovely getting to watch Noah and Vanessa‘s communication improve, and how they both evolve as individual characters and together. It’s an awesome romance book or reset book for people that normally read fantasy but just want an easy read that still has the romance, but less action packed.

Thank you for letting me be part of the ARC team!

I look forward to reading more books by this author!

Couples Session is a beautiful love story about two people who are struggling to overcome their pasts. Vanessa Bernhardt is a couples counselor who is single because she has found red flags with all her previous relationships. Noah Green is her most recent ex who ghosted her 10 months prior. On the night before Valentine’s Day he tries to come to her rescue during a snowstorm, but the ended up getting stranded together in her office.

I just love S.M. Levine’s books because they feature characters with real problems, we can all relate to. I also appreciate the Jewish representation in her books. These characters were so well developed, and as the author pulls back the layers, you can’t help but feel for the characters. I definitely look forward to the next book in the series.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Be honest, you need to read something uplifting -- enter the Well Space. In the second book of the Well Space series, we learn more about Vanessa. Vanessa loves love, and while she counsels others in their relationships, she can't seem to find any luck in her own love life. Reeling from a breakup from the sweet but silent Noah, she can't imagine why he is appearing at her workplace on a snowy evening to assist her with her stranded car.

While you can easily read this book on its own, I would still recommend that you also check out the first book in the Well Space series, Trial Run, for an even better appreciation of the depth of the characters. Just like Trial Run, Couples Session is a warm hug of a book that touches on themes of mental health and features a realistic look at relationships. There is satisfying character growth and examinations of common relationship pitfalls. And of course, romance.

I love how the characters and storylines are realistic -- we are reminded that there can be a happy ending even if outcomes are not a stereotypical fairytale ending, and that a couple can find happiness in many different arrangements. After all, as the book tells us, "People found courage in different ways through relationships. For some, it took bravery to end a relationship. For other people, the courage was in beginning a relationship at all. Or trying again, facing their problems head-on." (Note that I am reviewing an ARC copy and text may change).

Like Trial Run, I think you will love this sweet book and its cast of kind characters, especially if you need something to lift your spirits.

Thank you to S.M. Levine for sending me an ARC copy of this book; all opinions are my own.

I loved the first book in the series (Trial Run) and gave it 5 stars. If I can give Couples Session 6 stars, I would. I loved Noah from the first instance, then I loved him more and more. He's a great guy with some very understandable and realistic problems, and you just can't help but root for him. As a career woman myself, it's also really easy to step into Vanessa's shoes and sympathize with all her worries and insecurities. S.M. Levine is really masterful at creating characters who are truly relatable because all of their flaws and attractive traits are things you see from people all around you. It's really easy to feel really close to the MCs.

Not only is Couples Session a superb and heartwarming story in and of itself, it's also a really good analysis on the important aspects of why relationships break down, and the ways to overcome the obstacles. More than once, I found myself stopping mid-read to think, "You know what, that's actually a really good piece of advice, I should try that myself." One of my main metrics for giving 5-star ratings is whether the book has emotionally impacted me, and Couples Sessions definitely crushed that metric--it left me deeply warmed, and also deeply reflective.

And if all that's not enough to convince you, here's the cherry on top: the spice is JUST SO GOOD.

It's a great book. Buy one less Starbucks coffee and just read this; you'll get way more enjoyment than that frappuccino.

ARC REVIEW

"Couples Session"
the second book in The Well Space clinic series

by S.M. Levine

A woman. A man. Love. Relationships. Illusions and disappointments. Coming back. Feelings. Family.
Perfect imperfections.
Smiles.

And a car ride that looked like a steamy rollercoaster.

It’s a sweet and emotional, spicy-ish second chance romance.

I truly-truly loved reading it.

Thank you to the author for this ARC.

some of my favorite quotes:

and like a teenager getting ready for a school dance, he’d gone and bought flowers today. Roses were finicky, and so were relationships.

he had to be so careful to keep the mess of his personal life from touching her.

He did not look at her, because looking at her made his heart rate kick up and his chest feel hot

She had old eyes, the eyes of someone who’d lived several lifetimes.

People found courage in different ways through relationships. For some, it took bravery to end a relationship. For other people, the courage was in beginning a relationship at all. Or trying again, facing their problems head-on.

she was looking at him like he hung the moon

Expired from unrequited lust in a traffic jam, while the love of his life leaned closer to him

He’d fallen into a pit of lust

Her skin was delicious, and he was starved for this, like he hadn’t eaten for months.

He felt breathless, dizzy with loving her.

Brief summary: Vanessa is a relationship counselor who can't seem to find a lasting love of her own. And Noah is her ex, who thought someone like Vanessa would never want to be with someone whose personal life as so complicated.

That said - nothing in Noah's life came anywhere close to being a deal-breaker in my world. Maybe I have a higher tolerance for challenges. Still, though. Noah is a sweet character with some major abandonment issues, and I kinda just wanted to give him a hug and promise to always be there for him.

Vanessa, on the other hand, was a little insufferable at the beginning, but her character development glow-up made her much more tolerable by the end. There's something refreshing about a character realizing their own complicity without it needing to be pointed out by someone else.

This is the second book in a series, but I didn't feel like I was missing anything by not having read the first book before this one. It's a sweet romance, so if you're looking for high spice or erotica, this isn't it. If you're looking for an easy read for a lazy Sunday or a day at the beach, this would be a good choice.

Damn.

I wasn't sure what to make of this book at first after instantly loving the first two books. Almost DNFed it at halfway because I couldn't see why Vanessa and Boah should be together. I didn't see a single issue wrong with Vanessa and got increasingly frustrated by Noah.

But my god, this book really made me reflect on my own actions and love life. I can see that Vanessa also needed to work at things and in the end I was rooting for Noah and Vanessa.

I feel like I learnt a lot about myself through this book surprisingly, which is probably why I found it so hard initially.

I am kind of sad about Silvia and Aaron, not having a full HEA but I think the resolution to their relationship issues was quite enlightening. I loved that this book covered 3 relationships, one that ended, one that changed, and one that got a HEA. So interesting to see how sometimes its okay to let go, somethings can't be fixed and people are happier separate. Its okay for your relationship to be altered and change, and not follow the traditional expectations and to find yourself again without losing love.

As always S.M. Levine writes a beautiful novel that holds up a mirror to the reader and gets them to reflect on their own life.

"Couples Session" is a life-affirming and love-affirming bear-hug of a story. As always, I'm stunned by how quickly and skillfully Levine is able to achieve fully-realized multi-dimensional portraits of relatable characters who feel like real people I know and care about. A visit to The Well Space world feels like a warm return to a familiar neighborhood, peopled with old friends and close family, and re-drawn in a kinder light that shines our focus on the joy and power of love. Five stars for the expertly-crafted writing, clear-eyed treatment of complicated, gray-area psychology, and for magically lifting the weight of the world off of my mind while I read.

Many thanks to the author for providing an advance reader copy of this book, for which I'm providing this honest and unsolicited review.

Couples Session
The Well Space book 2

I'm going to assume these are interconnected stand alones. I didn't read the first book, but that didn't hold up anything within the plot of this book. I didn't feel lost in the story line because I didn't read the first book.
I really enjoyed Vanessa and Noah's relationship. With her being a couples counselor she is always trying to help fix other people's relationships instead of her own.
I love how both characters develop throughout the book, they have their own past traumas they need to work through to help them in their own relationship.
The romance is there but the spice level is a minimum
Overall a great easy read- meaning it's not really that heavy of a book considering they do talk a lot about past traumas and get into relationship advice etc.

Couples Session is the second book in the Well Space series. This book follows Vanessa, Ben's counseling colleague as she navigates her love life and tries to understand her red flag of running away when things get tough.

Noah and Vanessa tried a relationship about a year ago, and he ghosted her. Little did she know he was dealing with a lot and didn't know how to handle it.

Thrown back together during a bad snow storm, Noah and Vanessa reignite what they once had, but Vanessa is really scared that she will get hurt again. Noah vows to show her differently.

The two try to navigate their relationship and show one another that they can make their relationship work. The communication growth is so good, as well as their trust and growth in each other. I really liked this book.

Another great hit in this series!! I loved getting a peak into Vanessa’s life since she’s such an advocate for our love interests in the first book in the series. Getting to watch her romance unfold with someone like Noah, whose awkwardness was the cutest personality trait was so fun. The scenes that stuck with me will be with me forever. 🌹IYKYK!! I loved the normalization of normal people falling in love. And watching Vanessa unpack her own traumas while getting her podcast off the ground was fascinating and refreshing. This can be read as a standalone but I would highly recommend reading the first book as we see gems of old characters making appearances in the second book. Which I loved!! 🥰 the spice was 👏🏽 the characters were 🔥 and we get dual POV with a look into Noah’s grounding struggles. Overall a very good read!! ❤️

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy.

What I liked:
I liked that the book had a basis in psychology as that’s my major.
Silvia: the only good character

What I didn’t like:

Vanessa. She was too immature to be a good couples therapist. She annoyed me to no end. Didn’t like her at all. Hated her podcast as I don’t feel as if she was fit to give any type of advice.

Noah: he enabled Vanessa way too much. Put all the blame on himself instead of making her take some responsibility. Babied everyone around him way too much.

The loose psychology of it all. In order to be a couples therapist you first have to know something about psychology. This wasn’t it.

4 stars - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was such a heartfelt and emotional read. Vanessa and Noah’s story is raw, tender, and full of quiet strength as they try to rebuild trust and love while carrying the weight of their pasts.

Their journey isn’t perfect, but it feels real—messy, honest, and deeply human. It’s a beautiful look at second chances and the kind of love that’s worth fighting for.

Thank you to S.M. Levine for the ARC—I’m really glad I had the chance to read this book.

this one didn't really grab me and i found myself skimming in parts. i loved the premise & potential plot - the execution didn't really deliver on a gripping story. I didn't find it particularly emotional, nor did I really jive with their relationship. I didn't feel the chemistry with the MCs and their specific circumstances weren't particularly convincing on why they broke up in the first place.

Vanessa thought, for sure, that Noah was “the one”, until he ghosted her with no explanation. Now, she’s using her dating experiences to start a new podcast. As a relationship counselor, she figures she can use her personal relationships to help others avoid the mistakes she’s made. Staying late working on her ideas, leaves her stranded in a snowstorm. Her car in a ditch and hours away from getting a tow, she’s more than willing to let Noah pull out her car when he shows up.
Noah’s a man of few words but he knows this is his only chance for a second chance with Vanessa. Snowed in together, they hunker down in Vanessa’s cozy office with hopes of mending what went wrong.
Sweet story of opposites attract, hurt, and second chance redemption.
