I thought defeating a demon lord meant I could finally catch my breath. Yeah, right. Three months later, my just-rebuilt house is acting weird, my five magical familiars are at each other's throats, and a teenage girl has shown up at my doorstep babbling about five gates opening beneath Saltcliff. Just what I need.

Then the weird crap really starts happening. The harbor water suddenly recedes. Earthquakes target only Council properties. And ancient stone archways crackling with elemental power start popping up around town like demonic lawn ornaments.

Turns out, my ancestors weren't just witches—they were Gatekeepers. The spiral tattoos burning themselves into my palms are proof I've inherited the job, ready or not. These gates? They're cosmic filtration systems for dangerous interdimensional energy, and someone's trying to hijack them all.

Between managing my fledgling "Hexes & Hammers" business, navigating a new relationship with Zane (when he's not being corrupted by void energy), and trying to mentor a girl who might be the magical equivalent of a nuclear bomb, I've got my hands full. And that's before factoring in the three warring factions in town, my grandmother's consciousness getting trapped between dimensions, and the mysterious woman claiming to be family who's definitely hiding something.

Now I have three days before a rare celestial alignment supercharges all five gates. If I can't embrace my Gatekeeper destiny and restore the balance, Saltcliff won't just face a demon invasion—it'll be ground zero for complete dimensional collapse.

And here I thought being the Island Fixer was complicated. Somebody get me a hammer. And maybe a stiff drink.

Once again Eliza is in the thick of it and it gets soooo bad in this book. There are so many mind boggling answers in this book to the questions that arose in the previous books. Eliza, her mom, her crazy, hilarious grandmother, Mimi, and her friends, Astra and the familiars are in the fight of their lives. I love the familiars. Vesper is just so snarky. Saltcliffe is pretty much in the middle of an Apocalypse. Egads the things that they all go through in this book! It was enough to give me the dry heaves, need the AC on, left me ranting at the ramifications throughout, and wouldn’t let me sleep for a while afterwards. CC, Eliza’s sentient house is a riot. Malphas & Blackwood are still the big bads in this book. We get to know more about the other familiars and why Eliza has so many of them. Their names say so much about them.

Zane and Eliza finally get to go on their date when everything goes to Heck. (Insert loads of curse words here). lol. Mimi usually has me giggling like mad with her antics, and thank goodness for them as they are needed in this book! We get to meet Riley Martinez, who has been having a lot of dreams, is 16, and comes to Eliza for help. The title of the book says it all- there are five Gates that Malphas wants totally open so that the worlds/ dimensions will do what he wants. We find out more about the history of Eliza’s family and their true meaning of what they are supposed to do on Saltcliffe. The crazy things that happen in this book *shakes head* is just wow. The book had me freaking out so much. IT was also, fun, funny, hilarious, freaky, scary, romantic, and exciting. It made me love all of Eliza and her crew even more. How they work together, their love for each other. Their teamwork and how they fit together to get things done. It just makes the read awesome and scary, lol. I can’t wait to see what happens next. There were just so much information in the book.

By now, I should know better than to think Brenda Trim’s books will ever let me breathe—but here I am, clutching my coffee, laughing one second, gasping the next, and muttering “oh, hell no” at the pages like I’m right there in Saltcliff.
At the Gates of Hell is everything I love about the Forty, Fired, & Fighting Demons series turned up to eleven—chaos, humor, heart, and magic that refuses to behave. Poor Lyssa just can’t catch a break. She’s juggling familiars with attitude problems, a house that’s apparently developed a personality (and not a friendly one), and now she’s being told she’s a Gatekeeper with glowing tattoos and the fate of multiple dimensions on her shoulders. Yeah, no pressure!
I adore how Brenda Trim balances all the supernatural craziness with real emotional depth. Lyssa’s exhaustion, her fierce loyalty, her messy but beautiful relationship with Zane—it all feels so real, even when the world is literally falling apart around her. And can we talk about Zane? The way he fights his darkness while trying to stay grounded in love for Lyssa had me swooning and worrying in equal measure.
The action scenes hit hard, the humor sparkles (seriously, her sarcastic inner monologue deserves its own trophy), and the found-family moments warmed my heart in between all the gate-crashing demons. By the time the celestial alignment kicked in, I was holding my breath and cheering Lyssa on like she was my best friend swinging a hammer at the apocalypse.
This book reminded me exactly why I fell in love with this series in the first place—it’s got grit, laughs, magic, and just enough heartache to keep you turning pages at 2 a.m. If you’ve been following Lyssa’s wild journey, buckle up—At the Gates of Hell is a wild, witty, and wonderfully emotional ride straight through the chaos.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go ward my house and pour something stronger than tea. Lyssa proves once again that being forty, fierce, and a little fed up is the most magical power of all.

Hex Appeal: An Island Fixer Novel That's Delightfully Demonic

The Island Fixer's job is never done! This is the 4th book of Forty, Fired, & Fighting Demons. Helps greatly to have read the previous installments to understand the origins and history.

Eliza has taken on quite the job of fixing strange occurrences of supernatural activity around Saltcliffe.. The last installment brought new familiars, bound to the Grey line, a raven or Corvus, drake or Drakon, fox or Vulpine, wolf or Fenris and Vesper and a host of findings unknown until now. Not to mention the budding relationship between Eliza and Zane which keeps being interrupted by supernatural activities.

In this installment, Eliza is introduced to Riley whom has a unique bloodline and asks for Eliza's help with strange dreams she is having and is able to cast unusual spells that would normally takes years of practice. Just who is Riley and what does her bloodline mean?

Amongst the new discoveries, turns out Eliza is also the Gatekeeper of the elemental gates of which her familiars are key and who are at first very wary of Riley. The council enlists Eliza's help along with her empowered family and Zane, of whom may have some, previous baggage to contend with in this telling.

It appears Baron Malphas has not been imprisoned like they thought and may have been the previous Gatekeeper. Not to mention he really wants to return which could bring chaos and destruction, maybe.

Read this amazing series for drama, snark, sass and ultra-super empowered folks with enough class to make these events the perfect distraction.

supernaturally super charged, and super overwhelmed by apocalyptic possibilities

I really love the gritty, frustrated and frauen powered midlife women challenges, connections and communities in this and other Brenda Trim series.

soul and tealm shattering drama? bring on the hammer and the martini. love it!

and as the possibilities for resolutions get crazy, the new horror scape life and death details get crazier.

power people, familiar and um entities and forces - with lots if snark and grumbling - and of course, more drama.

good laughs, cries, and something so much more colorfully interesting than real life dramas, with much that is at the heart of life drama - so it's relatable, often inspiring.

love to have a drink with these folks. fear I have possibly housed some of the crazier furry or familiar companions - if you have polydactyls in your household and touchscreen technology - be real and admit I'm not the only one who has wondered.

btw : along those lines, yes you can passcode your purchases so furballs can't order large quantities of treats, ham or tuna or toys outside your budget. the extra toes can swipe for more, but I haven't figured out how to monetize that to fill their endless dramatic needs and wants list - hmmmm yes I relate to the companion drama in these books too!

so hop aboard the crazy train, escape your personal craxy for a while, and enjoy the creative and colorful, and heart and drama filled action.

"When has anything we've done ever gone to plan?" EXACTLY. This series continues to keep me entertained and LOLing. The main set of characters grow on me even more. I really just love to see their banter and interactions with each other.

The introduction of Riley into this one had me slightly confused. Like, I am enjoying what she's brought to the story, but I feel as though I'm missing a piece here and there about who she is and how she got here (in the situation) over the course of the book. Almost like, as the reader, we should have a smidgen more info about her? I'm hoping we get more info on her backstory in the next book to make what happened in this one make more sense (in my brain, anyway!) because she is a highly interesting character.

What kind of chaos is next for our motley crew of magical folks? I can't wait to see!

Thank you as always to Ms. Brenda Trim and Booksprout for the advanced copy of this to read and share my thoughts on <3

Just when you think things are settling down and a date night with Zane can FINALLY happen... that's a big ol' pile of NOPE!

Add to the mix a teenage girl spouting stuff about gates, learning that your ancestors are not quite what you thought they were AND weird things are happening around and under Saltcliffe - wow... this reader could barely hang on!

Eliza lets the sass and snark fly as she tackles one problem after another. She keeps going by the sheer force of her wits, her familiars and braiding in new information as supplied by family and friends. I am truly enjoying Eliza's growth as she continues to serve as the island's Fixer.

One day, the long awaited date will happen - but today is not that day and tomorrow is not looking good either.

Every time I have read a part of this series, I wonder what the writer will come up with next. That's because I think it can hardly get any worse. But again I was proven wrong. In this book there is an even more threatening danger. Fortunately the main character seems to grow also and gains more powers. I still wonder though, at what cost

Realistic and believable characters but I must say that it kind of gets irritating that the enemy always returns in a slightly different form with a slightly different plan. You almost know that at the end he will not completely be defeated. But fortunately it's  still worthwhile to read this book because of the fight, secrets and struggles and enjoy the “ journey”

Eliza and company really have their hands full with dimensional gates threatening to open and let out who knows what, a teenaged girl showing up with prophetic dreams that would make good horror movies, and the appearance of Zane's ex-girlfriend messing up an awkward attempt at a date night. Eliza thought 'Island Fixer' was a job she was barely qualified for, now she has to try and master 'Gatekeeper.'

The action and snark never end. Can't wait for the next installment. I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

Eliza Grey has finally caught her breath after her last battle when she notices Her house is acting strange. Then A teenage girl, Riley, shows up at her house talking about these dreams she has been having about Eliza. She finds out artifacts are missing from the council vault and they are connected to the gates to other dimensions. Then she finds out that there should be a gatekeeper and traditionally it was a Grey woman, so now she must learn what the job entails and also stop lord Malphas from destroying Saltcliff.
Another book in the series that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Eliza ancestors weren't just witches—they were Gatekeepers and she has inherited the job. She and Zane are starting to move into a more romantic relationship but will her new duties get in the way. This is a fun series with interesting characters and wonderful plots.
Brenda Trim & Chris Cain have once again written an entertaining story you can lose yourself in.

Eliza now has to become the gatekeeper and learn how to settle the gates and gain control. Riley is a sixteen year old Blackwood descendant and you don’t find out what she is all about until close to the end. Though Malphas gets one up on them this time. The book ends with a visitation from some aliens. We won’t find out what they want until the next book. A good read.

Maintaining the Gates

There is no time to catch a break for Eliza as her reason for being in Saltcliffe is more important than anyone realized. Her connection with Zane deepens despite the date gone haywire aspect of this adventurous story. It was suspenseful.and entertaining, I did not want to put it down.

FORTY, FIRED, & FIGHTING DEMONS Series:
Source: Booksprout.
AT THE GATES OF HELL, #4 - This addition does not disappoint. The ending is not a cliffhanger but there's more to come. Good characters. Good story lines. Good action and pace. 4*

SECRETS OF SALTCLIFF, #1 - I've read other books by Ms. Trim and this book is just as funny and entertaining. Good characters, although I did get tired of Eliza's mouth here and there, especially, in dangerous situations. Good story lines. Good humor. Good action. Plenty of magic. No vulgar language or sex. An intro paragraph to the next book is included, which reads like a lot more fun is on the way. 4*

THE WITCH'S FIXER UPPER, #2 - I hurt myself laughing throughout this book. But I was so immersed in the intrigue, the action and the lifestyle of this family and friends. Good suspense, ya know they're gonna win but just how .... Mimi is a trip, but she has the right to be sumting udder else. Good story lines. Great characters. Don't read the intro to the third book; it's not available yet, so you'll be sorry, I am. Drats. 5*

HAMMERS & HEXES, #3 - One. thing Ms. Trim can do is write an action filled book with good characters, intriguing story lines, and plenty of opened cans of whoopbutt. Complex, but with good humor, and plenty of unexpected surprises made for a fun read. Small use of vulgar language. 5*
FORTY, FIRED, & FIGHTING DEMONS End.

Characters are wonderful and the storyline was action packed.

The author did an excellent job keeping my interest in the story. I don't know how she does it after writing so many books. Each one is a work of genius.

Eliza has her hands full in this story. So much action that she doesn't get to take a breath before something else comes up. Now she is a Gatekeeper of the elemental gates, and her familiars play an important part to being the Gatekeeper.

Like I said nonstop action to be had in this one.
Highly recommend.
