DeVecchio is an American Mafia crime fiction set in 1978 Baltimore
Matteo DeVecchio is the underboss of the most powerful family in the Mid-Atlantic, answering only to his father Francesco, who is Capofamiglia. Sherry Drakos is a low-paid public defender who does the DeVecchio bidding on the side. “They call him a mob boss, but I’ve seen his world. Outsiders don’t understand. It’s kill or be killed.” He can’t keep his eyes off hers. Blue Eyes. Not again. God, I’m a sucker for blue eyes. Matteo is distracted when a powerful rival comes gunning for him, at the same time a DEA agent vows to end the DeVecchio family. No more time for distractions. He has a plan. When his rival takes aim at Sherry—watch out.
Thank you to NetGalley and RupertBossier for an ARC of this. I am always down for a mafia romance. I will say this was definitely different than when I was used to. This mafia romance takes place in the 1970s. I mean, I feel like a mafia romance is still mafia, like what’s being done is the same but you could tell that it was set in the 1970s if that makes sense. Different for me, but I did still enjoy it. I will say it felt a little slow at the start for me to get into it, but then as I kept on reading, I became more engaged. The story follows our main characters, Sherry and Matteo. Their paths cross after some stuff goes down and then Matteo kind of starts thinking about her and Sherry starts thinking about him, but they don’t act on anything right away. Towards the end of the book. They did have like this little miscommunication/break up thing that I did not appreciate. I hate the miscommunication trope, but since it was towards the end of the book, it’s not like it lasted long so I did appreciate. Overall, it was a good book.
#NetGalley Review Disclaimer: I don't read blurbs or reviews before I read a book.
Overall I enjoyed the story. There were some blips and jumps though.
Chapters 1-14 were a good start to introducing the characters. Sherry started off strong.
Chapters 15 I feel like the relationship turns too fast. The go from avoiding each other to holding hands and having flirting banter. From then on Sherry's naivety in her relationship and what Matteo does, I feel doesn't suit the character we are shown before or even when she is actively working.
DeVecchio is a mafia romance by Harper Dale. I enjoyed the fact that the book was set in the 1970s, it brought a different vibe to the typical mafia romance book. The characters of Sherry and Matteo were well developed and I was cheering for them to get together. The book did a good job of blending the romance plot line with the action of the mafia. Thanks NetGalley for giving me an opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
