I was lucky enough to be gifted a copy of Jonathan’s Locket by the author and was thrilled to read Lorraine Carey’s work as she has that special gift of ‘magic’ that can spin a tale so well. I readily admit that Jonathan’s Locket was an amazing read had me swept away. Not many readers are aware of the mysterious Wreck of the Ten Sails off of Grand Cayman in 1794 and the paranormal events that the author has included to make it even more mysterious. I couldn’t help but find myself feeling emotional and a tad sad as a young stowaway spends his final moments going down on one of the ships. The story jumps effortlessly to modern day Grand Cayman where a troubled teen will learn some hidden secrets and becomes obsessed with finding what he believes is a lost treasure that was on board one of the ships and this will lead him to the most amazing adventure he never thought possible. What a treasure of a tale for all ages! Thoroughly enjoyable and would highly recommend this work…Kim Wheeler
This novel had so much more than I had expected! I learned about the mysterious Wreck of the Ten Sails in 1794 and unknown urban legends of Grand Cayman. I was touched by the the emotional dynamics of this well crafted story where two teens meet guided by fate to help each other on a perilous journey. Author Carey knows good story telling and really showcases her talent in this one. I would recommend this read for ages twelve to young adult. Also there is a great message here for our youth.
I was very excited to read this book, it sounded like it could be a really interesting story, and it certainly was-I just wish it was longer! When I set out to read Jonathan's Locket I didn't realize that it was a novella-type story, but I feel it worked in the book's advantage. Now, I understand that there could have been a lot more to tell, but this would be a perfect book for reluctant preteen or teen readers, especially boys, to jump start them into reading. The characters were all interesting and the story was so...cool. I mean, ghosts and pirates, what more could you ask for? In a way, and as a big Mark Twain fan I feel I have the right to say this, it sort of reminds me of a tale he could have written had he still been alive today. So, saying that I have to applaud Lorraine Carey on her story-weaving skills. She's certainly an author you should keep your eye on! A swashbuckling(always wanted to say that!) tale of two boys from two different times on two different quests aboard a ship, this adventurous story will have you wanting more long after those last few pages are read. Perfect for tweens and young teens, even older teens(like myself) and adults as well. There is a lot to love about this book and it has that feel of a much loved childhood storybook. I recommend for anyone wanting to get into that state of mind, or anyone who just loves a good adventure story! *I received this book for review from the author in exchange for my honest opinion, and that is what I have given*
The story of Jonathan Palmer, a young orphan, setting off on a great adventure in the year 1792 immediately captured my imagination. An orphan, desperate to learn the truth of his birth, he stows away on board a ship bound for England in search of his mother. Jonathan is just fifteen years old, and, at the time the story is set, the journey would be long and arduous and especially dangerous for a young boy hiding away during the voyage. But the story takes a tragic turn and the ship is lost along with its fleet whilst still in the waters of the Caribbean. More than that, young Jonathan who was not even listed on the ship's company was lost in every sense. 200 years later on the island of Grand Cayman a teenage boy with his own modern-day problems but a special affinity for the sea, is drawn to the place of those long-ago shipwrecks. Although I was totally invested in the historical story the switch to modern day is smooth and timely. The paranormal elements fit superbly with the fear and superstitions that abound within seafaring communities both past and present. Lastly this is a story of two young boys, separated by two centuries, who were able, in their own ways, to cross the boundaries of time and help one another. Lovely!
A YOUNG ADULT ADVENTURE STORY WITH A MYSTICAL TWIST
Jonathan’s Locket by Lorraine Carey is the story of a 15 year old boy who departs the orphanage in Port Royal Jamaica where he was raised to go find his birth mother in England. He stows away on a trading ship with the help of a friend. Author Lorraine Carey tells a mystery adventure tale complete with ghosts, black cats, seaman’s superstitions and pirates all set in the exotic Caribbean.
Flash forward to the present day and a boy named Brandon living on Grand Cayman and in love with the sea. Brandon is drawn into Jonathan’s story through dreams, a glowing green turtle, talk of lost gold and old seaman’s tales. Inevitably their two paths collide allowing Brandon to free Jonathan’s soul trapped for hundreds of years beneath the sea.
I loved learning about all the history of the wreck of the 10 sails and Grand Cayman. This is a wonderful read for young adults full of adventure and mystery.
Not since Mark Twain has an author been able to capture the spirit and mind of two young boys and put it on the page for the reader to absorb. This story follows the adventure of two different teenage boys from two completely different eras of time and is done masterfully by the author. The reader becomes engrossed in the passion each boy feels for where he is headed and what he is looking for and what happens next is magical. Pirates and ghosts and broken spirits make this book a classic seaworthy gift of a read for any young adolescent and/or a bedtime story for the younger set. ( Which will keep the parent looking forward to spend the time reading just as much as the listener) If Tom Sawyer went into the ocean instead of the river he would have needed Lorraine Carey to write his story.
This book will grab you from the first chapter until the end. Lorraine Carey takes you back in time to a tragic moment in the Cayman Islands and a young orphan's boys quest to find his birth mother. Stowing away on a ship was his only hope, but this decision places him at the mercy of the seas. Then Lorraine whisks you to the future where a young man of the same age is fighting a battle of his own. His quest is to find peace between his passion for the sea and his obligations at school and home. Magically these two boys are brought together in a tale that will keep you reading and wondering what will happen next. A delightful read for young and old.
Jonathon's Locket by Lorraine Carey is a wonderful story based on a historic event that she intertwines beautifully with fantasy.
Starting with a famous shipwreck that happened 200 years ago, we hear the story of a young boy that was aboard when the ship went down. The author then weaves his tragic story with a boy 200 years later.
Set in the beautiful island of Grand Cayman, with shipwrecks, sunken treasure, strange lights and a mysterious sea turtle this is an adventure to remember.
Jonathon's Locket is the key here and how the author integrates history with fantasy is genius. Absolutely a must read with 5 treasure stars.
I was given this copy for an honest review. I have read this authors book" Mysteries of the Red Coyote Inn- The Adventures of Dean Banks and loved it, so I was excited to read this. Lorraine Carey delivers again a magical book. Everyone should read her books. You will love them!
I was gifted a copy of Jonathan’s Locket and was hooked from the first chapter. My heart went out to this young boy who was on a ship headed for disaster as it was part of the famous Wreck of the Ten Sails back in 1794 off the coast of Grand Cayman. Throughout the read I was hanging onto every word in hopes of a rescue for this stowaway, Jonathan Palmer. The details of the wreck are so well written that you can envision the scene as if you were there. I could feel the sadness coming from this tragic event and sensed that help was coming to assist this boy cross over; just who or what that is will come as a surprise. This short story includes mystical activity that keeps the story interesting as it flows effortlessly. It is a great gift for tweens to young adults. Enjoy the journey!

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was an interesting quick read, but due to the length there was a lot that was left out that could have been explained had this been a longer book. I liked the historical aspect of the story, I had never heard of the Wreck of the Ten Sails, and the transition between the timelines was well-written, but that's where it stopped for me.
Had this been a longer story, I would have liked to know how it was that Peter knew so much about the circumstances of Jonathan's parents and his birth; what was the deal with Brandon's "friend" Jason, why did he attack Brandon, and exactly where did Jason disappear to? But I did like how the ending was wrapped up, even with a telepathic sea turtle explaining what happened with Jonathan, and how Brandon was able to help his soul.
“Jonathan’s Locket” by Lorraine Carey is a beautiful cross between historical fiction and fantasy, connecting the story of an orphan in 1794 and another boy, 200 years later. The location of Grand Cayman inspires stories of early explorers, shipping adventures, pirates and treasures but Carey brings a little more substance to the story by showing the hardship for a little boy who just wants to know who his mother is, and stows himself away in one of the ships to find out. While Jonathan’s story is heart wrenching, Brandon brings fun and the sense of adventure into the novel; he and the ‘mystical sea turtle’. A great ghost story with two wonderful teenage characters from different centuries this is a lovely story, seemingly aimed at a younger audience but very appealing to this rather matured reader. Very enjoyable.
“Jonathan’s Locket” was a great read. I was hooked from the very first page. I liked the relationship between the characters. I felt as though I could relate to the lead characters in the story. I really enjoyed the story, which was refreshing and reminded me of my years as a youth growing up in the Islands. Definitely a must read if you like adventure.
My book, Jonathan’s Locket is the featured book for BOOK SUNDAY! Check out an excerpt from my award-winning Young Adult novel here on the page. It’s only 99 cents! https://asmallgangofauthors.blogspot....
Lorraine has done it again! A wonderful story of two boy's journey filled with adventure, friends, mystery, and suspense. Her vivid descriptions pull you in and don't let go until the end. I can't wait to read the next one!
This was a great adventure. Although there were quite a few errors, grammatical and such, I was able to look passed it due to the fact it was an intriguing story about the sea, a storm, a shipwreck, a locket, and a lost soul that needed to be freed. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a good sea story.
A great read book. The words are easy to grasp, easy to follow and I can't stop flipping each page. A very brilliant author. One should be reading this book and you will know why you should! Thank you for this great masterpiece, truly love it.
Happy to bump with this book. This is the book worth every page. Well written and really it serves its purpose! I enjoyed every bit of it. Found this book flawless. Yes, to read more of Carey's masterpeice.
Jonathan's Locket is an action-packed adventure you will want to read. The author has taken me from reality to an outlandish, dangerous, bizarre voyage that will keep you on the edge of your seat. You will be interested in the enjoyable story. I highly recommend the book.
I was immediately captured by this short work of historical fiction. It is based on an actual shipwreck called The Wreck of the Ten Sails which took place in 1794. Carey has managed to portray the setting of the past and the setting of the future two hundred years later in one enjoyable tale.
At the outset we meet Jonathan Palmer, an orphan living in Port Royal, Jamaica, who desperately seeks to learn the identity of his mother. He has been befriended by a seaman named Peter who assists him in becoming a stowaway on a British merchant ship. Jonathan hopes to get to England to find his birth mother. His most valuable possession is a gold locket with a wisp of her blonde hair that has somehow found its way to him at the orphanage. Once aboard the ship, Peter surreptitiously reveals the truth to Jonathan just before the ship named the Convert strikes a reef and sinks off the shores of the Cayman Islands.
The story shifts to modern times and a new protagonist named Brandon Wallace who lives on Cayman Island. He is a fifteen year old who loves diving, but seems to have all the problems of a teen struggling to grow up. His friend Jason is moving in on his girl, he is in trouble at school and with his parents for cutting class, his sister, Murielle smugly taunts him while remaining the favorite child. But suddenly Jonathan experiences a tugging toward investigating the story of the wreck. Then he begins to feel a choking sensation around his neck, and unexplained physical visions around the site. A sea turtle named Mallock guides him to swim to the old wreck. What is happening to Brandon and why does he feel such a compelling need to solve a two hundred year old mystery?
This book combines the elements of adventure, fantasy, folklore, history and the problems of a teen coming of age. Tweens, teens and adults will all find a unique interweaving of these elements. I could not put the book down and had to read it in one sitting and could not wait to see what would happen next. One hundred pages that are definitely worth reading!
This is an interesting story, or really it's two stories that relate to each other in unexpected ways. It starts in 1794 with a young, orphaned stowaway named Jonathan onboard a ship that is involved in an unfortunate crash. Only one other person onboard knows he is there. Unfortunately both are lost in the unrelenting Wreck of the Ten Sails.
Now move forward two centauries and we are introduced to a new young man by the name of Brandon. Brandon is a good kid who loves the water a little too much for his parent's liking. His skipping school and late night dives are more than they can handle. He is soon grounded and required to report to his guidance counselor regularly.
Something unusual is happening though and Brandon, as much as he wants to follow the rules, has to find out what. He is soon on an adventure that couldn't possibly be happening. Are the voices real? Does the telepathic turtle really exist and what do the old seaman at the dock know about the strange mist and storms that seem to draw Brandon in?
I enjoyed this and the way the two stories form into one. There is more to discover including Brandon's group of friends and a love interest, but you'll need to read it to find out the rest for yourself. I think if you do, you will enjoy it too.
What a marvellous and endearing story. One storyline concerns an orphan in 1794 and another one a boy who lives some 200 years later. Set in Grand Cayman it brings top mind Pirate stories and adventure, but the author tells a heart-warming story that pulls on your heart strings. My heart goes out to the hardship of a little boy who wants to know who his mother is, and stows himself away in one of the ships to find out. While one story is sad, Brandon, the present day boy brings a bit more fun and the sense of adventure into the novel, together with the ‘mystical sea turtle’. A great ghost story with two wonderful teenage characters from different centuries this is a lovely story for young adults that will enchant older audiences effortlessly. Truly wonderful.
I love time travels and this one didn’t disappoint me. Set in the Grand Cayman Island Jonathan's Locket is a story about two boys, their passion for the sea and struggles many young boys face. The language and feel of the story was defiantly of a YA nature and superbly written. Full of rich details and historical facts intertwined with pirates, mystical sea creatures and mystery, Ms. Carey has woven true events with a positively entertaining story that will delight both young and old. I highly recommend this book.
I thought this was an endearing story that connects the past with the present. A young orphan boy, Jonathan, in 1794 was a stow away on a ship trying to find his birth mother.when tragedy struck. In 2012 another young man, Brandon is going to find a link to the past and maybe a way to set the wrong that happened right. The author has done a great job creating suspense and mystery in this tale. The story is a quick read, but readers may want to take their time and visualize the story as past and present collide in a bit of the supernatural.
Two boys, separated by two centuries, but drawn together by mysterious forces. A glowing sea turtle as a guiding spirit. Yearning for a mother, for freedom, for the love of the sea... these are two boys who break the rules. For one, it doesn't turn out well, for another, it brings closure and healing. A quick and enjoyable read. [I received this book free through the Goodreads First Reads program in return for an honest review.]
I downloaded this story as I liked the subject matter. However, I'm only giving three stars since there were such a lot left out; questions unanswered. I'd have liked to have known more about Jonathan's mother. A great story for children, although I was startled when the characters in the eighteenth century said 'okay'. A bit too modern and it did pull me out of the narrative.
A beautifully written story sure to capture the hearts of many.
A mystical sea turtle meets Brandon Wallace and the sea holds many secrets as this tale unfolds its pages. Wonderful adventures emerge that will be a sure winner for fans of young adult literature and will be loved by all ages.
Bought it. Read it. gotta say. .. One of the most poorly written books I've read in a long time! !! Apostrophe errors, disjointed sentence structure, unrealistic dialog, a cursing teen who defies his parents, all topped off with a telepathic turtle who communicates with the main character. The best part of this book was that it was mercifully short!
I got this as a free Giveaway. It was a really interesting story. Jonathan Palmer's story was what caught my attention. Although it was a pretty short story and wished there had been more to it, it worked out. It left me wanting to know what happened after.
Poor Jonathon! I really felt bad for him since all he wanted was to find his birth mother. Brandon seemed to grow up a bit in this short story. He learned that sometimes the people you think are friends might not really be your friend. Not a bad little story.
