Letters from the Olive Tree is a literary historical fiction short story set in the early twentieth century. Giovanni Olivi, the second son of a proud but impoverished Tuscan farming family, is bound by tradition and cut off from inheritance. He leaves behind the only life he’s known and the woman he loves, Ersilia Innocenti, in search of opportunity in America, promising to make a life abroad and one day send for her.
What follows is a transatlantic journey of grueling labor, crushing poverty, and bitter desolation for Giovanni, testing the couple’s steadfast love. Told through vivid prose and the letters they exchange, Giovanni’s story unfolds in sweat, sorrow, and relentless hope as he faces the ultimate test of his promise to Ersilia beneath the olive tree.
Letters from the Olive Tree is a lyrical, emotionally resonant story about what it means to belong, in place and person. It is a timeless meditation on land, love, and the courage to keep building when everything seems lost.

Book Review: Letters from the Olive Tree by Reese Balducci
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.3/5)
Reese Balducci’s Letters from the Olive Tree is a poignant and beautifully crafted work of historical fiction that transports readers to early twentieth-century Tuscany and the harsh realities of immigrant life in America. Through the epistolary format, Balducci weaves a deeply emotional narrative that explores themes of love, sacrifice, and resilience with remarkable authenticity. The novel’s lyrical prose and vivid imagery create an immersive experience, making Giovanni and Ersilia’s story feel both intimate and universal.
Emotional Resonance & Narrative Style What makes Letters from the Olive Tree stand out is its ability to evoke raw emotion through the simplicity and sincerity of its characters’ correspondence. Giovanni’s struggles—marked by grueling labor, crushing poverty, and aching loneliness—are rendered with such visceral detail that I often found myself pausing to absorb the weight of his journey. Ersilia’s letters, meanwhile, offer a counterpoint of quiet strength and unwavering hope, grounding the narrative in a love that feels both tender and unbreakable. Balducci’s prose is lyrical without being overwrought, striking a perfect balance between poetic reflection and historical realism.
The novel’s structure, told entirely through letters, is both its greatest strength and a potential limitation. While the format immerses readers in the characters’ inner worlds, it occasionally leaves gaps in the broader context of their lives. A few more external perspectives or narrative interludes might have enriched the story’s depth without sacrificing its intimacy.
Constructive Criticism Though the novel excels in emotional depth, some readers may find the pacing uneven, particularly in the middle sections where the weight of Giovanni’s struggles risks becoming repetitive. A tighter narrative arc or a more varied exploration of secondary characters could have added dynamism to the story. Additionally, while the historical backdrop is vividly rendered, a deeper exploration of the socio-political climate of the time—particularly the immigrant experience in America—would have provided a richer context for Giovanni’s trials.
Summary Takeaways: - A love letter to resilience—Balducci’s prose is as lyrical as it is heartbreaking. - For fans of The Nightingale and All the Light We Cannot See, a timeless tale of love and sacrifice. - Epistolary storytelling at its finest—Letters from the Olive Tree will linger in your heart long after the last page. - A meditation on belonging, loss, and the unbreakable bonds of love, told with exquisite tenderness.
Final Assessment Letters from the Olive Tree is a moving and beautifully written novel that captures the enduring power of love and hope in the face of adversity. Its 4.3-star rating reflects its emotional resonance and literary craftsmanship, with minor deductions for pacing and historical depth. This is a book that will appeal to readers who cherish character-driven historical fiction and stories that celebrate the human spirit.

This is a short story about an Italian man moving to the United States in the very early 1900's looking for a better life. It's a sweet story and at 45 pages a pretty quick read. It is focused on the challenges of poverty & starting over, but still felt like a fairly light story. It feels like listening to a story your parents or grandparents might tell of how your relatives started a new life in this country. It's quite sweet. And while it's not focused deeply on characterization (not surprising for a short story with this much plot), you do get a feel for the kind of characters they are. Overall, really enjoyable short story.
