A chance meeting in a garden. A thwarted entrapment attempt, and a giant Duke who was more than a little rough around the edges. When Emma’s mother died her father fell into a downward spiral, leaving her to take charge of the household and her three younger siblings. Now she is twenty-three, her two best friends are in love and married, and she is chaperoning her younger sister Cecelia for her first Season. Enter Solomon Miller, the illegitimate son of the previous the Duke of Montclair, who was only acknowledged on his father’s deathbed. Solomon had grown up as a commoner in northern England believing that his non-titled father had died at sea. He was known as an astute and successful businessman even prior to becoming a Duke. However, he was now in London trying to navigate the social scene with Andrew, his friend and business partner (who just happened to be married to one of Emma’s best friends) as his only ally. After a scene in the garden introduced Emma into his life, he decided that she was the perfect one to teach him about societal etiquette. Knowing that her family was in struggling financially, Solomon offered to pay her handsomely for each lesson. As the lessons progressed so did their feelings, but Solomon had stated that he never would marry and have children. Emma understood and respected his reasons for that decision, but the fact that she did want to marry and have children meant that nothing could come of her feelings for him. Add to that some business issues, and Cecelia’s distress over an unwanted suitor whom their father insisted would be a good match, and you have a story filled with strong emotion and lots of conflict. Lies are told, hearts are broken and people are threatened before Emma and Solomon reach their happy ending. This story is filled with a variety of endearing characters. Lavinia, Alice and Andrew provide friendship, advice and support, while Lords Pearlton and Pembleton stir the pot. It was a treat to watch straightforward, no nonsense Solomon, change his mind and find his heart. But most of all, I adored the fact that Emma, who had sacrificed so much of herself for her family, finally got the love, recognition and happiness that she so richly deserved. This is as well written, entertaining story that will engage your emotions and leave you with a sigh of relief and a smile.

So Many Typos

Tiffany Baton needs an editor and beta readers. It seems like every paragraph in all her books have errors. I usually highlight and report errors, but there were just too many. Her stories are recycled with the same plots, with different names: Dukes who are survivors of abuse who have resolved to never marry become married to insecure wallflowers who love them, and that love converts abusive self centered men into ideal husbands. It's a trope that causes harm to society by leading women to try to save narcissists that thrive on hurting, and controlling others. I wish Tiffany Baton would create female characters who refuse to have unhealthy relationships, and successfully recognize manipulative behavior as bad behaviour, and sidestep abusive relationships.

Emma drove me crazy all throughout her friends' books. I didn't think I'd like her because I hated how she acted. She was arrogant and constantly tried to intervene in the worst ways with her friends, especially Alice. However, her story grew to be my favorite. Her stubbornness was her protecting herself from being hurt and used. She did everything for her family, more than what any man could have done. She has the love story equal to everything she did for everyone. She raised her siblings even in her grief, kept the peace, and fought for her family. Im so glad that Solomon was the one to earn her love and respect. He had his own battles and own story, but because of those things, he is the perfect match for Emma. I really wish there was an extended epilogue to see how they are doing.

One thing that threw me off on this book was that the Prequel seems to be from another book and has nothing to do with the rest of the story. So leaving that behind and getting to the rest of the story , it is different from most stories as it showcases how someone who is not used to the ways of etiquette requests assistance. Solomon came from the background of being raised a commoner and found himself struggling with how to comport himself while interacting with members of the ton, until he met Emma. Emma had given up on marriage as she was struggling to keep her family together while supporting her sister. Ever since the death of her mother her father had spiraled out of control and the family was facing financial ruin. Thus when Solomon proposed paying her to give him lessons she decided that even though this was very unusual she accepted so she could have money for a dowry for her sister. Of course the more time they spent together the closer they became. It was a cute engaging story that has a happy ending.

A sweet storyline

I truly enjoyed the story and the characters were delightful, interesting. The thing that I cannot understand is how many grammatical & spelling errors or repeating of words is included. Even an entire paragraph was repeated. Are these books not quality checked before printing? These things are hard to tolerate. Also, I think the way it is written, how things are said should be more aligned to the time period. A lady would never have said, “I’m pregnant!” No one in the 1800’s said, “who would have thought, right?” The correct lingo or dialect is important in Historical Regency Romance stories. Or, I believe it should be.

I enjoyed this clean story. Duke Solomon had only inherited his Dukedom recently and did not know the ways of polite society. He met Emma and was impressed with her. He asked her to teach him the correct way to behave. Emma worked hard to teach him how to navigate the various events, how to dress and how to behave. Solomon was reluctant at first but gradually enjoyed the lessons. Emma and Solomon grew close but Solomon did not want children and Emma did. They separated but their feelings for each other were too strong to resist. Will they find a way to be together? Read on and enjoy.

Donbother with the prequel, it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the sto t y. That being said, I loved the character ls in thos story. Duke Solomon's backggwas well written and he fit right into the previous stories. Emma's.character continues from the previous stories and grows from there. This was by far the favorite of the 3 books because the character building allowed you to really care about the hardships Emma was facing trying to keep her family together despite her father. Well done!

This story will have you from the beginning. The characters are well written with strong backgrounds for each characters. The impact that Emma's parents and Solomon's parents have had on them is very much explained in this story. The conflicts they encounter will keep you turning the pages. Thank goodness for wonderful friends. I would have liked it if this story had have gone on a little longer.

A Surprising Love

This was a fun story. Two people determined to avoid love at all cost are caught in a whirlwind they are unable to escape.

As hard as both main characters fought to remain aloof and emotionally unentangled, love wins out in the end.

Lovely Story

I enjoyed this novel very much! The characters were likable. It’s fun to see the banter between them. I felt their inner turmoil and fears would keep them apart. Happy it ended in a “Happily Ever After”! I was a little put off with all the typos, I found that I had to reread several sentences over to make sense of them.

Sometimes change is needed.

Death in a family can cause many hardships and the eldest daughter seems to be the one to keep the family together. This is an interesting story that causes changes in the perception of what the Duke and his love want from life.
