"Sometimes people just need a little something extra so they can live like everyone else."

Man, I love reading manga. I can just pick up a random volume without expecting too much from it, and then it completely blows me away. This is the story of the unlikely friendship between high schoolers Kobayashi and Uno – one with absolutely no energy, one with always all the energy. It's never specified in this first volume, but it's heavily implied that Uno is autistic. Kobayashi on the other hand usually sleeps in school and is often labeled a delinquent, but he is actually always overthinking and struggling with completing tasks. Both are realistic, layered characters who have much more going on in their heads than they can communicate to others. Unexpectedly, they turn out to be a positive influence for the other, and their friendship develops. They also start to share astronomy as a hobby, and the series will probably lean more into that theme considering the title. This first volume made me extremely emotional. It just hit. The way it showed how people may be silently struggling and how difficult it can be to ask for help was very relatable, and it was great to see how the characters started to learn how to deal with it. The art was mostly simple and nice, but it would get super intense when depicting stress or worries. It was impressive, really. 5/5, 10/10. Would recommend to every manga reader.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha for providing a digital arc in exchange for an honest review.

That was NOT what I expected at ALL. It was SO sweet and heartwarming! I completely fell in love with the characters and I love that it is a friendship story and that the main characters are not neurotypical. The reader sees the struggles of the characters, but when they make steps towards their goals, it is so hopeful and beautiful. This one made me tear up a bit, not going to lie.

4.5 stars, rounded up because it stayed with me and I want to continue the series to watch them be even more beautiful as they keep striving towards what they want.

5, I'm not crying you're crying, stars.

My thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for an eARC of this book to read and review.

I received an ARC though NetGalley for an honest review.

I have to say that this was a tough manga to read...because I was crying happy neurodivergent years throughout!

I cannot believe how wonderful, charming, touching, and important this manga is! It absolutely floored me and did an absolute number on my emotions.

I am AuDHD myself and, while, the book is specific, it is very clear that the main characters have different neurodivergences, which are somehow shown in a rather extreme, camp, and cartoony manner, while also being incredibly understanding and respectful. It's quite something to pull off.

Just reading this slice of life of awkward neurodivergent teens just trying to muddle through and be there for each other was such a balm for my soul. I truly wish I could have read something like this when I was a kid.

I absolutely adored it and am now and lifelong fan!

Heartwarming, seamless representation of neurodivergence and mental health.
Whilst not overtly stated, I would say there is autism, learning difficulties, and anxiety, maybe depression.

We have seeming opposites finding solace and understanding in each other.
An eager, anxious transfer, a lazy, loud jock figure. Then, nearer the end, a third year who is a chronic over-thinker.

The art changes to suit the tone and characters’ which shows art can say just as much as words. Sometimes more.
I do wish there was colour as the cover is so beautiful, but obviously as a manga, the black and white is the norm.

Arc gifted by publisher.

[volume 1, chapters 1-5, on-going] Anyone seeking out feel good friendship with neurodivergent representation will likely find this refreshing, but it was pretty squarely Not My Thing. Reminds me of low-conflict AU fanfic where it’s assumed you already love everyone and characters therapy speak each other out of arguments, and I mean that in the MOST polite way possible

On a totally personal aesthetic taste level, the obvious transition to 100% digital in chapter 4 felt a little deviantart gradient screentone-y

Yamato Kobayashi is barely holding on—drifting through class and life without being able to focus. And then transfer student Keisuke Uno floats into the picture and everything changes.

I LOVED this manga. It was so genuinely SWEET. I feel like Uno is on the spectrum and I adored him. And as Kobayashi got to know him more, he started adoring him as well. The way he started using coping mechanisms like Uno and the way he protected him? Gah!

I’m not sure if this is going to be romantic. At the end of this first volume, they have a wonderful new friendship and I can’t wait to read more!

This was so heartwarming and caught me off guard. We meet and follow a couple of neurodivergent teens and see their friendship blossom. I really liked how we dive into their thoughts, but we also see them learn to communicate and help each other.

This is a recent manga with a contemporary setting, I found out about it through the 2025 American Manga Awards (it was a finalist for Best New Manga).

Kobayashi is close to dropping out of school and people consider him a delinquent even though he has an after-school job (where he's also close to getting fired). His new classmate Uno is very enthusiastic and strange. The two of them become friends even though they are very different, and everyone is skeptical of their friendship.

Both main characters are clearly neurodivergent, but in different ways, and this is a focus of the story (there are no labels used, but Kobayashi probably has inattentive ADHD and Uno is autistic). They learn from each other, which is very cool to see. It's not a story where there is the token neurodivergent character and literally everyone else is neurotypical, but rather, neurodivergence is centered and even though the characters have different access needs, they get to hang out, have fun, and also learn from each other. (I like making lists too, so I enjoyed that this was presented as a positive XD )

They also end up joining the failing astronomy club, which I wanted to mention because this is also the plot of another manga I'm following too, Insomniacs After School - there the themes are more about chronic illness than neurodivergence, but I'd recommend that one too if you liked this one, and vice versa. Clearly the stars are the haven of the odd ones out (I find this really relatable, too).

"When I don't understand something, it feels like I'm floating in space."

Spacewalking with You feels like an absolute breath of fresh air in the shounen world. It showcases neurodivergent characters in a way I've never seen before in the manga medium. A lot of care has gone into the creation of this story. There were multiple times where I teared up, not only because of the characters themselves, but also the way Doronoda accurately portrays what it feels like to feel like an outsider, different from everyone else.

"... sometimes people just need a little something extra... ...so they can live like everyone else."

At its core this manga is a beautiful coming of age story. The art style is somewhat rudimentary, but overall Spacewalking with You has a lot of heart. This manga will appeal to readers who love rich slice-of-life stories with a good dose of comedy. Doronoda has created something truly special with this first volume and I'm excited to see where it leads.

Thank you Inuhiko Doronoda and Kodansha Comics for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

This comic is incredibly cute. It is a very nice depiction of how neurodivergent people try to cope with the difficulties that arise in everyday life and how much it can help if the environment is open and helpful. It simultaneously discusses serious topics and often gives answers to them that are probably rosier than reality. But that's okay, in many ways it can also be an excellent lesson in how important attention and understanding are in communication between people.

Kobayashi and Uno's slowly developing friendship is an excellent basis for a nice slice-of-life manga, in which characters with slightly different needs are represented. The author leaves it vague as to what labels the characters have, but based on the author's afterword, this may be a conscious decision because of the era in which the comic is set - 1989-2019. Personally, I didn't like the graphics in some places, but the story completely makes up for it.

I received an arc of this book thanks to Netgalley and the publisher.

This manga is a story that follows our main character Kobayashi who struggles with focusing in class, and acts like he doesn't care about his grades. But then he meets a new student called Uno. You learn quickly he is quite different to Kobayashi, but you watch as they have an unexpected bond and a unique friendship. It's a lovely start to a coming of age story, and I recommend it to others, especially people who felt like more of an outcast while at school. It also lightly tackles the feeling of loneliness, and how it affects people. The pacing is at quite a good speed too, as it help my attention the full time, but wasn't going too quick.

I look forward to read more of this series!

What a great manga focusing on neurodivergent characters and their relationships as they learn to tackle life. I really liked the art style when the characters would feel overwhelmed and how much detail was added in. I think this would be a great manga to gift to neurodivergent teens who are figuring out their place in the world.

I've been binging mangas lol, anyways,
despite the fun cover, this was amazing.

We follow Kobayashi, former 'bad' boy, whose life changes when Uno, a sensitive (possibly neurodivergent) person, joins his class.

They become acquainted and eventually friends, Kobayashi learns a lot of different things that I absolutely loved!

I didn't mark any quotes but some people have left one of my favorite quotes in their review so I'm copying it (sorry not sorry);
"Sometimes people just need a little something extra so they can live like everyone else."

I think Uno's autistic so love the neurodivergence representation. His struggles were shown clearly, his overwhelming, shutting down, struggling with upfront confrontation and sudden events...

Thank you to NetGalley for providing an advanced digital copy of this manga.

While I heard this was a great new debut, this surpassed my expectations completely! This is such a healing story and I really want to keep following the emotional journey forward for these characters.

Spacewalking With You is a slice-of-life and coming of age story that follows Kobayashi, a delinquent who has given up on trying and has an apathy towards his life until he meets Uno, a new transfer student who struggles to be understood by others. Both are very different people but find themselves bonding over their struggles to meet others' expectations and wanting to grow as people.

What I especially loved was that this is a manga crafted with such a deep level of care and respect for its characters. Uno is heavily implied to be autistic, and his needs are always taken very seriously even when they differ from what the allistics around him might be used to. Even when his needs are "unusual" or requires something from others, the story takes its time showing why it is so important for Uno to have, and that he isn't just being "difficult."

Kobayashi also struggles with school and at work, and his struggles really capture just how isolating and alone you can feel when you fall behind your peers. Through his connection with Uno, Kobayashi finds ways of coping with his problems even when they might look different than what most people need, showing just how vital it is to have people that are there for you non-judgmentally and completely.

Likewise, I appreciated that there are several moments when characters aren't understanding and might casually say or do hurtful things, even when they don't have bad intentions. There's such a realism and honesty to how the author writes interactions that is such a treat to read.

Overall, this feels like such a warm hug of a book, and I think would appeal to fans of Skip and Loafer, Bocchi the Rock, and even Mob Psycho 100. I would especially recommend it to neurodivergent readers as well.

Thank you to Kodansha Comics for my ARC provided through Netgalley.

As is beginning to be the usual for me, I went into this completely blind. And the first couple of pages I was a little unsure about the setup and where it was going to go – but my worries were put to shame.

Uno is just starting at a new school, but people already seem to think he’s odd. When people start picking on him Kobayashi, the school slacker, comes to his rescue. Despite their very different personalities, a new friendship launches.

While it’s never explicitly stated, it’s pretty clear that this is a story about neurodivergence. And, while I would never speak on behalf of the people who are being represented, to me it felt like a very nicely balanced portrayal of both some of the strengths and challenges – and of finding ways to navigate your limitations.

"Sometimes people just need a little something extra so they can live like everyone else."

All in all, I thought it was a heartwarming and thoughtful story about friendship and helping each other grow – and I absolutely adored the dynamic between the two main characters.

So, I would die for Uno.

This whole first volume reminds me of that meme where a tough-looking character says that their friend is going to tell you about their special interest and you BETTER listen to them. Then, they stand menacingly in the background making sure you pay attention while their friend takes the stage.

That’s Kobayashi and Uno.

Anyway.

I think this is a fun, inclusive slice-of-life story.

I appreciate how this story represents different cognitive or learning abilities and the adaptations people use to get by in life. It’s nice to see different kinds of characters in manga.

More, I really like how this story demonstrates what it means to be a good friend.

In our increasingly isolated society, I think it’s really important to have stories like this one that provide guidance and examples for how to be a good friend and a decent, kind person.

I mean, we all have to share this world.

That’s much easier to do when we give each other a little grace.

Anyway, anyway.

Looking forward to reading more~

Thank you @netgalley and @kodansha_en for providing a digital ARC! I loved it so much I bought a shelf trophy.

Thoughts
The whole manga was adorable! It had such a heartwarming feel while diving into the representation of mental health and neurodivergent.

Characters:
Uno* is everything. Every time he would say anything, it had me smiling. I want to jump in the story and protect him with my whole being.
Yamato* is so relatable he is just trying to live his life holding on with all his might, but he can barely focus on anything. I felt so bad when he was at his job and the coworkers were talking about him 😭.

Art:
The art alone had me! One of the main reasons I bought the manga. (BTW Yamato is so pretty!)

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I picked up this manga without expecting much, but it turned out to be incredibly wholesome. The main characters are complex and multi-layered, with rich inner lives they struggle to express to those around them. As the story progresses, it's heartwarming to see how they become a positive influence on each other, gradually easing each other's burdens day by day.

The manga offers a thoughtful and sensitive portrayal of neurodivergence and mental health. It powerfully illustrates how people can be silently struggling, and how difficult it can be for them to reach out for help. That aspect really resonated with me.

Thank you to Netgalley, Inuhiko Doronoda, and Kodansha Comics for this early release!

This series follows two boys who feel out of place and struggling with the social aspects of life. Despite being very different, they quickly grow to understand each other and become friends who grow with the help of the other.

This introduction to the series was so so good. Yes I might’ve teared up a little at one point. The author did a great job interpreting the characters struggles and their frustrations while connecting the reader to understand and feel what they felt.

Overall I really enjoyed this and am excited to read more of this series!

The first and possibly only manga I’ve read that honestly portrays neurodivergence! There really is a spectrum and Kobayashi and Uno exist at different points on that spectrum. Both characters are handled with care and are not reduced to simply being “quirky” the way that so many other series would. I hope this series gains traction here because it really deserves it. Only nitpick is the art style. It’s a little out of my wheelhouse as I tend to gravitate towards the sugar sweet shojo style. Regardless, this was a hit for me!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for putting this one out there!

A heartfelt collection of stories showcasing the beginning of a friendship between a seemingly unlikely duo. The main characters are both neurodivergent (though in different ways), and while watching their struggles was painful, seeing how they help each other overcome obstacles and grow was beautiful.

I read this in one sitting and cannot wait for the next volume. 5/5, an instant classic.

"When I don't understand something, it feels like I'm floating in space."

Spacewalking With You follows Kobayashi and Uno, two very different personalities that sparks an unexpected friendship.

This is a wholesome and seamless representation of neurodivergence and mental health. It makes me as a reader feel completely seen.

At its heart this is a coming of age story about finding your place in a world not very friendly to neurodivergence people as our two protagonists learn to tackle life. Had me tearing up on more than one occasion.

“Sometimes people just need a little something extra, so they can live like everyone else.”

Spacewalking with You Vol. 1 surprised me a lot. I picked it without thinking too much, just because of the cover and the genre, and it ended up moving me to tears (flooded with tears). I didn’t know what to expect, and maybe that’s why it hit me so hard: it’s a simple but very real story.

The manga follows Kobayashi, a boy who’s lost motivation and stopped trying, until he meets Uno, a new student with a distinctive personality. Both carry their own struggles, but little by little they connect through everyday moments, without grand gestures, which makes their relationship feel very genuine.

The story doesn’t minimize Uno’s needs and carefully shows why they matter to him. It also portrays Kobayashi’s experience well, as he struggles with school and work, feeling disconnected and left behind.

The illustrations are simple but very expressive, and the visual depiction of stress and emotional overload is very well done.

It’s a story I would 100% recommend to everyone, especially to people who have ever felt out of place.

Sometimes people just need a little something extra so they can live like everyone else.

Spacewalking With You is a fun, heartfelt story about two neurodivergent high schoolers who form an unlikely friendship. It offers a thoughtful, nuanced portrayal of neurodiversity, particularly in the way it contrasts two very different experiences—Kobayashi, who’s been masking and struggling alone without support, and Uno, who has embraced his needs and built a system around himself that helps him feel safe in the face of a world that is often confusing and cruel to him.

Watching their friendship grow was *everything*. Kobayashi learns that it’s okay to struggle, to ask for help, and to lean on someone else. Uno, in turn, begins to open up more and form a deeper connection than he’s used to. Their differences highlight each other’s strengths, and their dynamic is tender, a little awkward, and irresistibly sweet in that opposites attract kind of way that I love.

The artwork is expressive and full of emotion, and the storytelling is impactful, despite the lack of significant plot. I found myself smiling, laughing, and tearing up more than once. It’s a lovely blend of introspection, humour, and emotional growth that made me feel seen.

I’ll definitely be recommending this one to anyone looking for tender, thoughtful neurodivergent rep, and I can’t wait for volume two!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
