Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.

“70% tedious, 30% brilliant. You’ll have to decide if that final spark is worth the climb.”

This book was emotional whiplash for me. I nearly DNF’d at 50%, but the ending finally revealed the story’s real potential.

The premise is fantastic: Scandinavian-inspired mythology, a hero cursed by prophecy, a strong-minded woman disguised as a man, and stakes tied to a kingdom’s survival. The world has atmosphere and the lore is promising. But the execution struggles with uneven pacing, a confusing tone (a middle-grade-feeling intro followed by YA/adult romance), and a prophecy-driven love story that doesn’t follow its own rules.

Axel’s emotional arc never fully lands because the romance contradicts the prophecy at the heart of his character. Petyr has great potential, but pacing issues and unnecessary side characters drown out her development — and her nickname “Pet” feels jarringly wrong for such a strong female character.

Overall issues, in my opinion:
• A dragging first half and slow pacing
• Too many unnecessary side characters and side stories, especially when the main plot already struggles for clarity
• Romance undermining the core prophecy
• Tonal mismatch
• Underdeveloped emotional stakes

Why still 3 stars?
Because the final 20–30% is genuinely strong, especially with the final reveal of our FMC. For a moment, it becomes the book I wanted from page one.

I’m cautiously hopeful book two will deliver the story this one only hinted at.

“I don’t think war is ever worth the cost. War has no winners or losers. All that’s left in the aftermath are those still living and the bodies of those that should be.”

“Children of Ash,” by Allison Anderson

This was such a good book. I loved the plot with pirates and camaraderie but with the magic aspect that is outlawed so they go around saving magical children that will be killed. I liked that Axel had the magic of impenetrable skin and how Petyr was so mysterious about herself. The characters were the best part of the book. Petyr is learning where she belongs and how to grow into herself after her trauma. Axel wants to help win the war but at what cost. I loved how Petyr was known as the demon for Axel; she is his right-hand person even though he’s already so strong. 4 out of 5 stars, so good.

-Hidden Identity
-Woman pretending to be a boy
-Magic
-Gods, Dragons, Nixies, etc.
-Pirates
-Slowburn
-Strong FMC

Thank you for the ARC, Netgalley.

Wow! Just wow! This book just just blew my mind.
Axel is the greatest hero in his kingdom, unmatched and strength and impervious to injury. However, with his power comes a curse. When he finds true love, he will lose his powers, and his kingdom will fall to their enemies. He and his closest friend, Petyr, were the only survivors of a battle with the enemy kingdom, Sidan, that destroyed their home. Petyr is an elite warrior, a silent assassin, and secretly, a woman.
Petyr or Pet is one of the best FMCs I've read in a while. She IS NOT annoying or impulsive. She's calculating, logical, but without being cold. I love how her and Axel know each other so well that they can communicate with looks. Aka- no miscommunication troupe.
Axel- I have no words. The man will literally go to war for her.
The book is action-packed, but the last 10 chapters were intense. The twists and the cliffhanger had my jaw dropping.
I haven't read a lot of Norse / Viking themed books. So initially, some of the terminology made me stumble. Kindle dictionary to the rescue! If I had a paperback, a glossary might have been needed.
I am definitely need book 2 ASP!

Thank you to NetGalley for letting me be an ARC Reader.

This is a great beginning to a new fantasy series.

Pet and Axel were the only two survivors of a horrific raid that killed not only everyone in their land but also all the invaders. Axel is blessed with a dash of immortality and cannot be killed. Pet has trained to become a deadly warrior.

They and their crew serve the king but don’t like him at all. Once his treachery becomes known, things come to a head. And secrets come out.

I love this new series. The characters are interesting and the action is nonstop. There are lots of adventures and wild creatures. I am ready for the rest in the serie!.

Thank you to the author and publisher for letting me have an early copy of this book, forever grateful!

I’d give this one 3.5 stars overall. It had a good storyline but I did feel like it didn’t hit in places. The nickname Pet really annoyed me, even though they go over its origins, I just wasn’t a fan so it irked me throughout the book unfortunately! I also didn’t quite get the whole prophecy…him falling in love would be his downfall but he is in love with Pet and it’s mentioned a few times?? Confusing, maybe I’ve missed something with it?

Anyway, it was a solid okay. Nothing too much to rave about personally but I’ll likely want to see how the story develops in the second book.

Thank you to author Allison Anderson and Net Galley for sending me an ARC of Children of Ash in exchange for my honest review!

Nonstop action, fighting, magic, mythical creatures, romance and everything you could ask for in an epic Nordic adventure. I found myself laughing, crying and feeling everything these characters were feeling as they felt it. And that cliffhanger?? I can’t wait for the next one.

I ❤️ Pet and Axel!

✨Arc Review✨
Thank you to the author Allison for sending me this digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

It has everything I love in a fantasy novel—deep world-building, powerful magic, slow-burn romance, and characters with real heart. This book hits so many sweet spots for fans of romantic fantasy, and even though it leans on some familiar tropes, it delivers them in a fresh, heartfelt way.

The story follows Axel Ashersson, a gifted warrior-mage born under a powerful curse: if he ever gives his heart away, he loses his magic—and Åldras may fall. Enter Petyr Mallorysson, a fierce and clever soldier with a secret that adds a whole new layer of tension and depth to the story. Watching these two characters navigate war, loyalty, identity, and their complicated feelings for each other was an absolute treat. Their dynamic was one of my favorite parts of the book—it felt genuine, slow-building, and full of emotional stakes.

The world of Åldras is rich with lore and magic, and Anderson paints it beautifully. I loved the sense of ancient history, the haunting power of the prophecy, and the idea of Häxa-born magic. The conflict with the Sidans creates a real sense of urgency, and there’s a lot of depth in how the characters wrestle with their roles in a much larger fate. Even the quieter moments were captivating—Anderson knows how to balance action with introspection, and her writing flows smoothly throughout.

That said, there were a few small things that kept this from being a full five stars. Some parts of the story do follow well-known fantasy beats, and I occasionally wished for a bit more surprise in the plot. The magic system, while interesting, could have used a bit more structure or explanation to really shine. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise gripping and emotional read.

Overall, Children of Ash is a fantastic debut (or start to a series, fingers crossed!). If you love fantasy stories with complex characters, strong female leads, hidden identities, emotional tension, and just a touch of fate-driven romance—you’ll definitely want to pick this one up. I can’t wait to see what Allison Anderson writes next!

OH ALLISON, THE WAY YOU PLAY WITH MY HEART.

I finished this book and immediately questioned how I was supposed to go on with my life. I am NOT okay. The cliffhanger? The yearning?? The way this book ends??? I need answers. I need book two. I need THERAPY.

TROPES YOU’LL LOVE
🔥 Slow burn tension that hurts so good
👑 Powerful women rewriting their own fates
🗡 Found family and loyal crew dynamics
💬 Silent communication and simmering stares that speak volumes
🌪 Secrets and betrayal

In a world ruled by history, magic, and buried secrets, Children of Ash introduces us to Pet, a stubborn, sharp, and unyielding heroine whose loyalty and strength could shift the fate of kingdoms. Alongside her is Axel, a brooding mystery wrapped in tension and heartbreak. From court politics to ancient power, from queens who love fiercely to battles waged in silence, this story is cinematic, immersive, and utterly consuming.

MY THOUGHTS
I tried to read it slowly. I really did. But I fell in love on page one, and by the end I was absolutely wrecked in the best way. The tension was perfect. The plot twists had me reeling. Every character, from the queen to the crew, held such depth and complexity.
And Pet? One of my favourite FMCs ever. She’s sharp, witty, stubborn, and refuses to be anyone but herself. I ate up every moment with her.

And then there’s Axel. Oh, Axel. The history between him and Pet. The unsaid things. The push and pull. Every glance felt like a gut punch. Their chemistry is written so well it practically breathes off the page.

Allison Anderson, you have ruined me. I yearn for more. I need the sequel. I’m ready to ditch all responsibilities and binge everything you’ve ever written.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars — Masterpiece. Breathtaking. Devastating. And 100% worth every scream into my pillow.

“Who Would Burn Down an Entire City and Leave it in Smoldering Ash?”

I really took my time reading this book, not wanting it to be over. And now unfortunately, we have to patiently wait for the next book.

Axel Ashersson is strong, cunning, and deceptively charming. How could anyone think he was up to no
good? But it is the curse hanging over him that brings pause. He is the only man ever born from a Häxa, something unheard of. Should he fall in love, it could doom him and Åldras. Trying not to fall in love should be easy enough, right?

Petyr Malloryson is everything I look for in a FMC. She is arguably one of the smartest characters in the book, if not the smartest. With a tough exterior, and even rougher interior, it’s a struggle to allow anyone close. Shaped by tragedy and chaos, she has been molded in to a feared assassin.

As their only remaining family, it’s no surprise how protective they are of each other. Their relationship feels like a breath of fresh air. No MMC overbearingly trying to protect the FMC, because Petyr can handle herself. Hiding behind her disguise is the best way for them to stay together, but is that tension I sense?

Axels existence truly puzzles me, and I’m excited to see how the author unravels the story of his being, possibly a mom reveal?? The curse opens up so much for the future, and the looming battle hangs over all their heads.

Having read her previous series, The Cartographer’s War, I was prepared for some in depth world building and I was not disappointed in the slightest. I truly enjoyed how the author explored the past. The troubled beginning of the war with Sidan poses more questions than answers. How did it start, and why did they do it? I feel like we still have so much more to learn. The Häxa were one of the most intriguing aspects of the story. Their ancient history, slowly being wiped by those who feel threatened by their existence. I hope we are able to see them recover over time, and learn about new abilities thought to be extinct.

This book was a great start to a new series and I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for us.

Allison Anderson has done it once again. After creating a world with lands of magic for The Cartographer War series, she has now imagined a new setting based on Viking and Norse mythology with a story featuring hints of Greek mythology as well. When only some women have magical powers and are branded as witches and hunted by some kings, one young man born to one of these women has great powers and an invincibility. Axel and crew sail their longboat fighting enemies and helping magical women escape to safety. His life-long friend, Petyr is a silent and deadly warrior. However, he is not as he seems as he is actually a female. Only Axel knows her secret and she maintains the deception so she can remain alongside Axel to fight to avenge the death of her family and village and not be forced into a subservient role as a woman. Anderson does a wonderful job of developing her characters as the reader follows them through the story and their tale of their background emerges over the course of novel and the reader really comes to know and understand them as they face challenges all along the way. Of course, like any good myth, there is a prophecy that is hinted at throughout the story and becomes more critical towards the end.
The author keeps the reader engaged throughout the story and I found myself having difficult putting it down. In fact, as I approached the end, I found myself staying up late into the night to reach the final page. After immersing myself in The Cartographer War series and coming to know the characters, I was at first apprehensive if I could come to enjoy these characters just as much. It did not take many pages before I felt like I had found a new family of characters who had a story of tragedies and victories to share with me. I can't wait until the next book is released to continue this epic tale.

Read This Book If...
* you love a good fantasy with moral ambiguity.
* you are looking for a coming-of-age story with a strong female protagonist.
* you're ready for some epic world-building.
* you're looking for a new obsession.
⚔️ Children of Ash: A Fantasy That's Worth the Hype ⚔️
🌍 The World-Building is Top-Notch
Allison Anderson has created a world that feels both ancient and alive. It’s full of detailed magic systems, warring factions, and characters with complex motivations. It’s the kind of book where you can get completely lost in the lore, and it makes you want to live in this world—even with all the danger.
🤔 The Morally Gray Characters Are Everything
One of the best things about this book is that no one is truly good or evil. The characters are all trying to do the right thing, but "the right thing" is different for everyone. It makes for a compelling and unpredictable story, and it forces you to question your own loyalties.
🌱 A Protagonist Who Feels Real
The main character is relatable and flawed. She doesn't always make the right choices, but she's doing her best to navigate a tough world. It's refreshing to see a hero who struggles and learns from her mistakes, and you'll find yourself rooting for her every step of the way.
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book

This was a strong and promising debut that really comes into its own by the end !
The Norse-inspired world is immersive, the mythology feels rich. I am obsessed with Norse mythology for years and diving into a book inspired by it was so interesting for me🤩 and the central concept a hero blessed by the gods but cursed to lose everything if he loves creates real tension from the start😭

Axel and Petyr are the heart of the story. Their bond feels earned, built on years of shared battles and unspoken loyalty rather than forced drama (As we can see in all romantasy relationships from some time). Petyr, in particular, stands out as a capable, thoughtful FMC - calm, strategic, and emotionally grounded. The lack of miscommunication between them is refreshing, and when the story leans into their connection, it truly shines.

While the pacing is slower in places and the first half takes time to find its rhythm, the payoff is sooooo worth it. The final stretch delivers high stakes, emotional revelations, and twists that reframe everything that came before😩🤯🤯🤯
By the last chapters, the story finally matches the ambition of its premise and I am so glad that I kept reading !

Not flawless, but compelling, atmospheric, and full of potential. I’m genuinely excited to see where book two takes this world!🔥🔥🔥

Thank you NetGalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. I think Axel was my favorite character. He’s blessed with impenetrable skin, which means he’s impervious to damage. He’s basically super human, but he has a very soft heart. I loved how he stood up for what he believed was right and tried to help those who couldn’t help themselves. He was such a loyal sweetheart, and I enjoyed his journey.

The Norse influence made for a fun setting. I loved that mythology was woven in without overwhelming the plot. Anderson did a really good job of leaning on that for her setting while also building her own unique world.

There were a couple of occasions where something was explained away as being magic, but I felt like it was a bit of a cop out. I got slightly annoyed at these parts. And I wanted more from the characters. They felt real, but I wanted to see more of them, especially Pet. I don’t have her quite figured out yet, and I wanted to get inside her head more than we did.

Overall, this was a fun, fast-paced read. I was a little frustrated with the ending, not because it was a cliffhanger, but because it felt cut off at the wrong time. Still, I had fun and enjoyed this story a lot!

Viking inspired, friends to lovers, slow burn, fantasy romance. Say less.

In this book we are following Pet and Axel who have been friends forever, only becoming closer after a horrific event that left them with only each other.

In a kingdom where magic is punishable by death, Axel is the High Kings worrier, having the powers to be invincible. When the High King sends Axel on a quest, him and his crew are faced with many different Viking inspired myths and legends.

The plot twists are twistin and the slow burn is absolutely moving along at a snails pace. But I do believe it is a trust the process situation. When we get there, We will for sure get there. I am not a friend to lovers enthusiast but I did like this one because a few extra add ins.

There is a mini cliffhanger at the end and I cannot wait to continue this journey because I do believe it’s going to be an epic one.

Thank you NetGalley, Oliver Herber Books, and Allison Anderson for providing me with an ARC and allowing me to recommend this to other readers.

I’m pretty sure I need the sequel now. Wow. Just. Wow.

The first part of this book started slow for me. I loved the characters, Pet, Axel, and the crew so it was fun to see them through the first bit of the adventure, but right around the 60% mark I was hooked and finished it all in one sitting.

I really liked the subtle, slow burn yearning. Pet and Axel are such a great pair, both willing to do whatever it takes for the other.

And the ending! I am so excited for the next one to come out.

I really liked how the author’s note talked about how she was inspired by Homer. I definitely got that vibe as I was reading so well done!.

Things that are great about this book are the world building, the morality aspect of the characters, and the war/power dynamics.
Things that could have been better are the pacing, including some unexpected twists, and adding complexity to the side characters.
The banter between the FMC and MMC is quite good, and the buildup to their relationship flows nicely. There aren’t really any super villainous characters, they all believe they are doing the right thing and fighting for it which is a refreshing detour from good vs evil. It was a good read but I wasn’t “hooked” and felt that bigger things could have happened throughout.

Absolutely phenomenal!
Children of Ash hooked me from the very start. It was incredibly well paced and the way the lore and history was woven into the story made it interesting and engaging. The characters were so fleshed out. I loved Axel. The way he cares about everybody and will give everything to protect people is everything. And his absolute loyalty to Petyr made me love him so much more. Petyr is such a complex character too. Living her whole life as Axel's shadow while trying desperately to keep her secret safe in a world that would see her as less than.
This book had me gasping and crying and I could not get enough!

A mixture of hero & villain

Allison Anderson has done it again!

Children of Ash, and the first in her new adult fantasy series, shows that there's a mixture of good and bad, hero & villain, in everyone, and it's a choice to find balance between them.

Based on the Trojan Wars story, thrown into the boats of Viking warriors, and this masterpiece comes to life in exciting, and heartbreaking, ways.

Axl & Pet are the lone survivors of their sieged village and pretend to be male cousins in order to stay together. Until war and disaster strikes, then Pet's life and identity hangs in the balance.

A Riveting Tale

I chose to read this book upon the recommendation of another author whose books I love and was not disappointed. Axel and Pet have a long history between them, and this chapter of their life stories adds another layer of emotion and powerful revelations. There's kingdom action and intrigue, but the emotions rise to the forefront as the book winds down. There's surely more to come for them!

This book was incredible. From the moment I started reading, I was transformed into the world and found myself surrounded by the heart of the story. Not only were the characters developed well, but the story moved forward in a nice pace and I was rooted to my seat. It had everything I wanted in a book!! I need to know if there will be a sequel immediately.

It’s about time adulting pays off because Anderson has taken her fantasy’s to a whole new level in this adult fantasy novel. The book moves slower compared to the Cartographer War but the world building and description makes up for it. It’s fun to get to know new characters and enter a new world. Take the plunge, plus there might be a dragon 😉

Because this was a new fantasy series, it took a while for me to get into it. I always have a little trouble to understand a new world from the get-go.

Once I got into it, the story was really good. Axel's prophecy wasn't a big thing, but nobody ever forgot about it. I think it will play a bigger role in the next books, because it was on the back of my mind the whole time.

Petyr, or Petra, I don't really know how to address her, but I will use Petyr because that's how she presented throughout most of the book. Petyr was such a strong character, she was doing everything Axel did, but without the reassurance that she can't be harmed.

Also, the ending. I won't get into too much because of spoilers, but I thought the book was finished at around the 80% mark. I was surprised there was a whole other thing that was going to happen, but it did set up the second book with a new adventure. I thought the end of the book was going to be the beginning of the second book because it would end with a cliffhanger, but Allison graced us with a lesser high-stakes cliffhanger. I'm still looking forward to the second book.

Thank you Allison Anderson for the e-ARC. All thoughts are my own.
