I’m truly glad to have you. Before you begin, I’d like to take a moment to let you know that 1929 is not just another historical fiction series. It’s an addictive journey that sweeps you across genres. While you get to know and become close to the characters of 1929, understand that the world around them is more than it seems. But rest assured, all is connected, and all will come together.
After reading 1929 Jonathan’s Cross - Book One, do not be dismayed in Elizabeth’s Heart - Book Two, when you meet Simon, whose only connection to the characters of 1929 is prophetic visions about them. And Elizabeth might only seem important to Simon, but she is much more than that. She is vital to the one man who finds himself in danger in 1929.
Moving on to 1930 Aryl’s Divide - Book Three, you will again laugh and cry with our beloved characters as they grind through another year of the Depression and fight for hope and survival.
Drifter - Book Four will take you away from Rockport but introduces you to an important character, Detective Sloan. Drifter documents Aryl’s missing year, while giving you a unique look at the life of a missing person’s detective.
Purgatory Cove - Book Five will take you into the mind of Elizabeth, at the exact moment where she fractures into a third personality. It also explains how closely Simon and Elizabeth are connected to the main cast.
And, 1931 Caleb’s Err - Book Six brings all the cast together for resolution and closure, ending the saga. For now.
I do hope you’ll journey with me through the adventures of 1929. Thank you for reading.
M. L. Gardner is the bestselling author of the 1929 series. Gardner is frugal to a fault, preserving the old ways of living by canning, cooking from scratch, and woodworking. Nostalgic stories from her grandmother’s life during the Great Depression inspired Gardner to write the 1929 series—as well as her own research into the Roarin’ Twenties. She has authored nine books, three novellas, one book of short stories and a cookbook. Gardner is married with three kids and three cats.
Wonderful series. Would love to see this brought to the screen. The love between the couple's and the friendships are something of a bygone generation. My mother's generation had relationships like this. Great read.
I just finished reading books 1-3. They were excellent. The first book starts on Black Tuesday in 1929. The day of the first stack market crash. It covers the difficulties that 3 couples of life long friends encounter trying to survive having gone from wealth to poverty
The only part that I don't like is I had some difficulty following book 2. It didn't relate to book 1 until the very end. Book 3 basically picks up right after book 1 ends and wraps up the story well. Book 2 however was excellent as it was written. It takes place in a Insane Asylum and describes horrible treatments and horrendous environment that the mentally ill were subjected to.
This is a well-written story about the lives of three couples who were very wealthy but lost everything in the Stock Market crash of 1929. The lives of countless people were abruptly torn apart in the years of the Depression as the Nation struggled to survive. This is a believable story of some of the complications, dangers, and events encountered by people fighting for their very survival. This Depression laid the groundwork for changes in our culture that are present today. Anyone who likes Historical novels will enjoy these volumes and the characters who are alive in its pages.
Perhaps it's just my own aversion to the supernatural, but I just couldn't get involved in the after death stories. The adventures and misadventures of Jon, Caleb, and Aryl were enough -- interesting, emotional, exciting, funny, and real. Obviously, I was invested enough in their story to read six books. I also enjoyed reading about Simon and Elizabeth -- but I would have preferred their story in a separate book.
If you are intrigued by or enjoy reading about the "simpler times" where values and a persons word meant something then this set of books is for you. I truly felt like I was there traveling those dusty roads and feeling their pain. Mrs. Gardner thank you from the bottom of my heart for writing these books and the series, I appreciate you keeping the past alive.
I absolutely fell in love with all of these characters. The hardships of life are very real and you see this in everyone of their lives. They fight and overcome all of them just as a family should. I would recommend this series to everyone! Love it
