The First Lost Boy

Rate this book
Stars see everything and forget nothing. And sometimes they meddle far too much.

Ava has no idea who she is or how she got on the unfamiliar island Peter Pan keeps insisting is her home, the place she’s safest. But there are shadows in his cunning eyes and something within her screams out a warning that he can’t be trusted.

When Belle learns that her sister is alive, she leaps at the chance to work with Hook, his crew, and their siren ally to free Ava from Pan’s grasp. She thought that with their help, she’d have time to save Ava before her secret was discovered…

She was wrong.

When the sinister truth slithers its way between the tentative truces formed, some friendships and alliances buckle while others break. But if everyone doesn’t work together to accomplish the seemingly impossible, and fast, all those trapped in Neverland’s gravity will be lost to an insidious darkness forever.

Can Hook and Ava find one another and manage an escape? Or will they be consumed by the malicious shadow and forget one another forever?

RONE Award-winning author Casey Bond lives on a rural farm in West Virginia with her husband and their two beautiful daughters. She writes phoenixes – gloriously flawed and morally gray characters that fiercely rise from the ashes of their circumstances.

Worldbuilding is one of her favorite pastimes. She thinks thunderstorms are better than coffee and that watching a meteor shower is the closest thing to magic you might ever see. She’s a firm believer that every amazing book needs a world you want to wrap yourself in, a character you want to win, and a love you would fight for.

The scream I scrumpt when I got to read this one before may… I loveeeeee this duet. It’s so good 😍

Hook is 🔥🔥🔥

I’m surprised that since I’m in my spicy era that I wasn’t deterred by no smutty scenes.. but the tension.. the touch her and die vibes.. the betrayal. Just chefs fucking kiss.

Another banger from Casey B.

This book had me on the edge of my seat, I was fully invested in not only the main characters’ journeys but also the side characters as well. Nyin was my favorite character and I will hear no arguments on why she is the best- it’s just a fact. Seriously these two books are unlike anything I’ve read!

I would just caution everyone to read the trigger warnings and know going into these books that it is a adult Peter Pan retelling- if you have an attachment to Peter Pan in any form childhood you need to consider that before hand because you will never see his story the same 😂

Hook and Belle grapple with the truths that come to light. Alliances are forged to save Ava. Will freedom be within grasp or will they all be lost forever?

I loved returning to Neverland and was shook by twists and turns I didn’t see coming. Ava must navigate danger at every turn and with her memories lost, she doesn’t know who to trust.

Hudson is desperate to get Ava back but time is running out. His devotion was everything! And by the stars, he is quite the secret romantic. Their love story is soul-stirring and heart achingly beautiful. Can they find their way back to each other?

The First Lost Boy is a suspenseful, emotional, and richly imaginative twist on Peter Pan and a sensational conclusion to the duet!

Huge thanks to the author and LadyAmbersPR for the review copy opportunity. This is my honest and voluntary review

Casey Bond's conclusion in the The Shadows of Neverland duet is an action packed race filled with morally black characters, dangerous magic, and some fun twists.

It was really exciting to finally get to return to Neverland. The story picks up right at the edge of the cliff Casey left us hanging on at the end of The Last Lost Girl. Casey does a wonderful job of creating this very dangerous environment that Ava finds herself in throughout the majority of the book. While separated from Hudson, she is forced to go toe to toe with Peter Pan himself. Pan is equally parts sadistic and creepy. Ava is forced to be on her toes at all times, lest she risks Peter's wrath.

Casey does a good job of keeping the action and drama moving throughout the entirety of the story. The reader barely has time to catch their breath before they are whisked away through another chapter of danger and "wtf" moments.

I really enjoyed getting more perspective from some returning characters as well as some new ones that really tried to steal the show. I can't give too much away, but they are truly unhinged and fun.

Overall, Casey Bond delivers a fun conclusion to this magical duet!

🖤 Dark Urban Fantasy Romance
🖤 Peter Pan Retelling
🖤 Secrets & Betrayals
🖤 Dark Curses
🖤 Lost Memories
🖤 Secret Identities

The fairytale you thought you knew is much darker and twisted than you were led to believe.

This is the conclusion in the Shadows of Neverland Duet and what an ending!! This duet is now one of my favorite Peter Pan retellings and is filled with lost memories, dark curses, secrets and betrayals, complex morally grey antiheroes, found family, and a tension fueled romance. This story has multiple points of view and still set in two different worlds - the modern world and the fantastical Neverland. This installment focused more on Peter Pan, the Lost Boys, and why Pan didn't want Ava to have access to her memories and was packed full of twists and turns that I didn't see coming. The revelations are BIG in this one, y'all!

Thank you so much to Casey for the advanced copy! I think is my favorite series of hers to date! 🖤

OMG, this was an amazing Rollercoaster ride!!!

The characters were just as awesome as they were in the first book. I loved reading and getting to know more about the characters and the things they went through in this story.

The storyline was phenomenal. It was so detailed, and I couldn't put it down. I was pulled in at the beginning, starting where the ending left off of the first book, and kept entertained until the end. There were a lot of OMG moments in this book, which made this book my favorite between the two books. I hate the fact that this book is the end, but I find myself daydreaming and allowing my imagination run wild. I love this book so much, and I highly recommend this read.

I am truly impressed with this Peter Pan retelling.

This is the second and final book of the duology and I got all the answers I needed. There's so much tension, I spent the whole time at the edge of my seat! There's not much I can say without spoiling some aspect of it, so I'll just say it felt quite different from the first, it brings all the backstory and sheds the light on what's really happening.

It was super (in)tense, sometimes low-key scaring, very well written and truly a great retelling.

What a perfect way to wrap up this story. I am so happy I picked this book up at Apollycon so I could get a head start 🤪

I really loved this story though and Casey writes in a way that gives the perfect amount of detail while keeping the flow. I was captivated the entire series!

So close to being a 5 star read…

I will always be an “endings girl.” Sadly, I was not in love with the choices the author made with the ending.

Enjoyable follow up to the first book, but not as good.

Fantastic! What an exciting and unexpected yet perfect conclusion to this duology. I loved the twists in here! I didn’t see them coming which made them that much more awesome!

I enjoyed how everything wrapped up and of course the ending was nice as well.

If you enjoy: fast paced sequels, Peter Pan retellings, touch him/her and xx vibes, high stakes, secrets, memory loss, and more then check this sequel out!

I was pulled in from the very first chapter and couldn't stop.

I thought I had an idea of where this book was gonna go after The Last Lost Girl, but Casey put me on a roller coaster and did not release me until the last page.

I loved everything about this duet. It's such an unique twist on the Peter Pan.

You're gonna want to read this duet! It's one not to miss.

First of all, let’s take a moment for the book itself. Could it be anymore beautiful??? STUNNING!!

I loved this duology more than I can even say. This ending was chef’s kiss. The book was face paced and had me in a chokehold from the very beginning. I love these characters like my own family and I have no shame.

Death sweeps away their memories…
Belle has brought a galleon up from Never Sea for Hook and the crew to repair. Their shadows have returned to some and while they hope to use the galleon to return home, Hook refuses to leave without Ava whose shadow is still lost. Called to shore, Hook and Belle find there has been an attack on Ava, and she is missing…
Ava wakes to find herself with Peter Pan. She is weary of him but doesn’t know why. As a few memories start to surface, Peter’s fury causes him to once again send her to her death, in hopes that when she is revived, she will remember nothing. Hook, Bell and others of the crew step foot on Neverland to find Ava, to save her and to rid the island of the evil that is Peter Pan.
If you think you know the story of Neverland, Peter Pan, Hook and Tinkerbelle in all its transitions get ready to step foot on the island, get up close and personal in whole new way. This epic retelling of Peter Pan blends with the original premise of the classic tale while delving into the history of the island, those who dwell on it and the magic infused within the land. Decades ago, an entity filled with evil came to the island coveting power, intent on controlling the island’s magic and everyone on it. Then it brought the lost children. Stole their shadows, their memories, bringing fear, hatred and death. Now it is time to take the island back, to free those imprisoned while allowing others to go home.
This duo belongs on the shelves everywhere, right next to the original so you can see how an old classic can be spun into a flight of fanciful imagination filled with new details about how it all came about. We learn more about the lives of the lost boys before they were brought to the island, Belle, Hook and Peter, while some memories are gone forever. Casey gives us an ending that rivals a grand finale. So satisfying that an epilogue would be superfluous. Thank you, Casey for knowing when to be silent. I recommend this book for all those grown-ups that love fantastical tales, retellings of classics, a story that lives with you long after you turn the last page. I also recommend it for older young adults who enjoy reading a magical tale.
I received an advanced readers copy for my opinion of this book.

This book, unfortunately, fell off significantly from the first one. At the beginning, we were onto something! It was twisted and dark and intriguing, and I was ready to see where the story took me. And then it all went downhill. The plot took such a sharp turn into something else entirely, and I preferred the direction the story had set up previously. The point of views also got really weird and confusing, as we had like two from one random character, one from another, a few scattered from another, and then in our main girl's POV, it got super weird and hard to follow what was going on.

The ending also just felt very abrupt and random, like we built up this whole confrontation for two books, and then some other random person comes in and takes care of it? What?? And instead of giving us closure in the end with all of the different characters, we get a random spice scene in the last chapter.

Which, speaking of that, the romance in this duology did not land for me at all. I already had trouble believing in them in the first book, but towards the end of that one, I was starting to like what they had blossoming, but that's part of the problem: their relationship was just at its beginnings in the last book, but in this one, we don't build off of that. They barely interact in this book, so all of their relationship development stays stagnant where it was before, and then so I feel like by the end of the story, I'm supposed to believe in their love and connection, but I just don't.

So overall, not my favorite read, but the first book was a pretty interesting story, so I'd still recommend giving this series a try.

“We’re all going to need a lot of therapy after this nightmare ends, maybe even as a group.” - Ava

Yes, Ava, I believe we will. 🖤

Oh. My. Goodness!!! I just finished reading The First Lost Boy (book 2 in The Shadows of Neverland Duet)… and I’m feeling this quote to my bones. You all, I am reeling (in a good way). I suggest you buddy read this one because if it wasn’t for my book bestie, I don’t know if I’d be ok right now. ❤️‍🩹

Casey manages to break all the rules and seems to always, ALWAYS, catch me by surprise. If you haven’t guessed yet, this is not your average Neverland retelling.

The Shadows of Neverland Book 1 (The Last Lost Girl) left us on quite a cliff-hanger. 😱Thankfully, book 2 picks up right where we left off. But be warned, the suspense and drama will not let up until the end. This is a bingeable roller-coaster in which you think you know who the real villain is… until you realize that you don’t. So make sure to clear your calendar because you won’t want to put this one down.

Also… be prepared to feel ALL the feels. But that ending, though… ❤️‍🩹🥹🥰🫠

If you love a darker retelling with so many plot twists and turns and an ending that will make it all better, but still have you thinking and talking about this book long after you have finished it… this might be the romantasy book for you. “Stars see everything and forget nothing.”

TW/CW: Gore & violence, references to
k!dnapping and past abuse, one on-page spicy scene.

I did not read book one in this duology (this book was gifted to me), so I can’t speak on how the story goes together or if it adds anything to the first book. But I can talk about this one and how I didn’t think it was absolutely necessary to read the first book. There are definitely relationships and dynamics established that would be helpful to have information on, but it didn’t hurt my reading experience.

I really liked the plot. It’s Peter Pan, but not, filled with magic, has really engaging plot, and characters that were super likable. That being said, I liked the characters more than the plot itself. Some of them are beloved characters that everyone knows, and I felt really connected to them through the way they were written, but I just didn’t love the plot as much as I loved the characters. Ava was probably my favorite character in this book. She felt relatable and I liked her attitude.

We have multi POV that jumps around, with Ava being our main character. There are four other POVs that appear in this book, with Hudson serving as the secondary main.

I would give this a shot absolutely if you’re a fan of Peter Pan retellings.

Thank you very much to Lady Amber’s Reviews and PR and Casey Bond for an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own and in no way are influenced by the manner in which I received it.

I really don't know how to feel about this book . . .

First off, I definitely should have reread book one (The Last Lost Girl) since it has been a hot minute since its release. The First Lost Boy picks up where book one left off without any recap or context and it took me a bit to get back into the story and piece things together.

That being said, this story is a lot. It’s deep and complex and not a light read, but it is worth it! And, just when you think you get a handle on what might be coming next or how a character may react, you are proved wrong again and again as everything is an unexpected twist or turn.

It was easy to fall in love with characters. And then hate them. And then fall in love again when you discovered their whys and motivations for their actions. The found family aspect of this story is truly epic.

The ending was really hard for me. I started off hating their final destination . . . and then ended up loving it! (sensing a theme yet LOL) But it was a stunning conclusion and again shows how love can overcome almost anything and how important family and found family connections can be.

Hook and Ava do find their happy ever after (through many tears from me) even if it wasn't what I expected it was phenomenal. 4.5 stars!

This book picks up seamlessly right where the previous book left off, immediately pulling readers back into the action. Told initially from Hudson’s point of view, we finally get a glimpse into his inner world—his thoughts, emotions, and especially his heartbreak in the moments before and after Ava is attacked by Wendy.

Ava, now without her memories, finds herself in the company of Peter Pan. Even in her confusion, she senses something is off—Peter’s charm wears thin quickly, and his darker side begins to show. Unlike the first book, this installment unfolds through multiple points of view. In addition to Ava and Hudson, we get insight from other characters, which adds depth and tension to the unfolding story.

We also finally learn why Belle rescued Ava from Neverland without her shadow—and the answer was completely unexpected in the best way. The plot is packed with action and reveals that tie back to the mysteries from book one, all leading to a series of twists that keep you on your toes right up to the final pages.

The romance also steps up a notch in this book. Ava and Hudson’s chemistry is electric, with plenty of “touch her and die” moments that are intense, protective, and beautifully written. Their connection feels earned and emotional.

Overall, this book is a thrilling, heart-filled continuation of a darkly magical tale. The action, romance, twists, and strong theme of chosen family all come together in a satisfying conclusion to the series.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the second book in The Shadows of Neverland Duet. You need to read the first book, The Last Lost Girl or you are going to be lost. This book picks right up where we left off in that book. Get ready to be on the edge of your seat the entire time you are reading this book. I absolutely could no lay it down. Ava has found herself with Peter Pan but she has absolutely no memories. However she knows that deep down in her soul that something is not right. I am telling you now that the author did such an amazing job of writing this book that you feel like you are in a very dangerous place. I could feel it from the moment I started reading this book. Ava is still separated from Hudson and he is desperate to get her back, but time is quickly running out. Now she and Pan about to go toe to toe. She has to be careful and stay on her toes the entire time so she doesn't incur the wrath of Peter Pan. This book is filled with so many twists and turns and things that you will never see coming. This is a duet that you do not want to miss.

I was so on the fence about this book. But ultimately, it was just ok.

The way the book opens with Ava’s memory loss was very intriguing. But it eventually just dragged on. There didn’t feel like there was much going on.

Towards the end when Imani started popping up, the writing itself got convoluted. We’d be in Ava’s pov but seeing through Imani. It was sometimes hard to tell what was going on. Especially because there was no clear way to switch between the two.

My other issues was with the povs. Devin has like 2 povs and they were essentially useless. Ezryn had one and because it was his only pov it felt out of place. Then bell has some small sections at the end; these made more sense to have but as they were isolated it was again something that didn’t seem to fit. A few of the later chapters also has split povs which was again not seen through 95% of the book. Basically, consistency with the povs and chapters would’ve been nice.

As for the romance, it felt very brushed aside compared to the first book. It really only seemed to matter towards the end. Though, given Ava’s memory loss, this did make sense

After reading a few of Casey’s books now, I’ve found that her stories just have a different feel to them. Like there’s an eerie, dark undercurrent with a mix of fantasy and real world that just make her stories so uniquely hers and I love that! I also love that her stories are so unpredictable!!

I definitely found this to be the case with The Last Lost Girl but especially The First Lost Boy. I don’t want to spoil anything but the story started turning sci-fi and that was the last thing I expected! At first I wasn’t sure I liked that direction for the story (sci-fi normally isn’t my thing) but I kept reading and ended up so intrigued! I could not put these books down and was always on the edge of my seat. The element of memory loss throughout the story made it so interesting too, especially because you really start to question who is good and who is bad the more you work your way through.

If you’re looking for an amazing Peter Pan retelling or just want to read a fantasy that’s unlike the others out there, then definitely give this duo a chance!

This was my most anticipated read of 2025 and Casey absolutely delivered! From the moment I started the book, I was utterly enthralled, transported to Neverland as though the words lifted from the pages. Through masterful story weaving and worldbuilding, I was kept guessing until the very end! The First Lost Boy is the perfect conclusion to this dark retelling of Peter Pan, and it's my favorite duology of Casey's yet!

Nyin, Hudson and Bones were my favorite characters in the series and in this book, they shone brighter than the Second Star itself. I like my men morally grey, even more so when they are a shade darker [iykyk ;)].

The First Lost Boy checks all of my fantasy romance boxes with shadow magic, curses, memory loss, and a morally grey pirate that would do absolutely anything to save those he loves (ahem, Ava!). I was privileged enough to read a copy of this book early through purchasing at an event and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Book 2 in The Shadows of Neverland Duology

Is it possible to give this book a higher rating than 5? No. Do I want to? Yes. Casey Bond exceeded all my expectations/guesses regarding how this book would unfold because the end of The Last Lost Girl broke me completely, but she twirled all the pieces together and created a masterpiece Neverland retelling that is so deeply imaginative and intriguing that I can't wait to re-read both books back to back now.

A high intensity, on the edge of your seat game of shadows and memories set within an ensnaring storyline that is packed with more plot twists than I can count, but that all make for an captivatin book. Amidst secrets, betrayal, action, trust, friendship, love, and so much more, prepare to expect the unexpected and ride the wave in this fast-paced, action-packed, not-your-average Peter Pan retelling.

This was one of my most anticipated releases this year and it did not disappoint!! ✨

It was an instant 5 🌟 read for me! The suspense had me on edge and the twists and turns left me REELING! I’m so happy with the way this ended. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an exciting story without the big series commitment. It’s got action, s3xy pirates, a little bl00d and g0re, mythical creatures, tension and a plot that will leave you guessing until the very end. It’s unlike any fairytale retelling I’ve ever read!! 🔥

This probably would have been a 3 star book if not for the ending. I didn’t appreciate all the additional POVs that were quite unnecessary and added nothing to the story.
The magic system was the most interesting part of the story but not enough to save a lackluster plot. I also didn’t buy the romance between Hudson and Ava. They just kind of felt thrown together just because they’re both the main leads. They didn’t seem to have any connection. I’m probably in the minority feeling like this . . . It’s just hard to picture anyone falling in love and willing to die for each other after a few weeks especially when they have no memories of each other together as children.
Overall not a great read. Still on the hunt for a good Peter Pan retelling that doesn’t make Peter Pan pure evil and hook is still a true pirate not a disgruntled lost boy who grew up.

I literally finished this book in one sitting and having no regrets. I’ve been longing to go back to this since the moment I finished The Last Lost Girl last year. I had been sitting with so many thoughts and questions and theories and had been recommending it to everyone so I could talk about it with them. And this week I finally got to return to Neverland, and the conclusion to this duet was truly everything I could’ve hoped for and more. The twists were phenomenal, I never saw them coming. The familiarity of our old friends, Hudson, Ava, Bella, the lost boys, both on the ship and on the island, and even Devin, was like coming home. The revelations and reveals? Priceless. My heart was pounding the entire time. This book picks up right where book one left off, which is good because I wouldn’t have been able to go on knowing some important moments were missed. Ava’s struggles on the island and seeing more of Pan offered such a new perspective on things, and then Casey had my head exploding with where she went next. Hudson and Belle working together was really fun to see, because, well…you know. And Nyin. I LOVE Nyin so very much and was thrilled to see her have even more of a role in book two. And the letters? Casey, I want ALL the letters. This book was the perfect ending, the perfect mix of suspense and romance and tension before the happily ever after!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It was filled with unexpected twists and turns that had me saying, “Oh no, she didn’t!” multiple times. 😂 This duet exceeded all my expectations and was even more captivating than I had anticipated. It was an absolute page-turner that I couldn’t put down. The relationships between the characters and the overall ambiance were simply exquisite. It’s a book that truly deserves a “chef’s kiss.” Talk about Hook! 😍 OMG! Especially the final few chapters. 🖤🖤 This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys an adult retelling of Peter Pan.

My absolute favorite quote:

Such things can’t be changed, and dwelling in the past does not encourage us to move forward into a future where possibilities await 🖤
