When the new girl at LaMond High School arrives, Marti is instantly envious. Sarah has everything Marti wants, but is also nice, smart and a is a terrific basketball player. Sarah is also Jewish, and soon ugly prejudice becomes evident, not only in school, but in their small Iowa community as well. Young Adult.
Sarah with an H is the new girl in school in a small town. Her parents have just moved there, buying the home originally built by the man for whom the town is named. They also opened a hardware store that looks more like a chain store. And they are Jewish. Marti is asked to show Sarah around school on the first day. She doesn't quite understand why it seems Sarah doesn't fit in with her friends.
This story is a study of subtle prejudice. Rarely is anything done overtly to Sarah and her family, but their existence in the town seems to bring out a hatred never previously experienced or evidenced in the town's people. Marti doesn't quite understand what is happening. This character creates some problems for me. In modern day America, even in the smallest most remote communities, could a teen who has been attending a public school really not understand the concept of prejudice? However, Irwin does an elegant job in showing how hatred travels in a community.
Sarah with an H by Hadley Irwin is a book about a girl that moved to a small town. Her parents bought a house that was built by a man, they also opened a hardware store. I recommend this book for people who are trying different genre's of books or just just a book to read. I rate this book a 4 out of 5.
