Christy Barritt is an author, freelance writer and speaker who lives in Virginia. She’s married to her Prince Charming, a man who thinks she’s hilarious—but only when she’s not trying to be. Christy’s a self-proclaimed klutz, an avid music lover who’s known for spontaneously bursting into song, and a road trip aficionado. She’s only won one contest in her life—and her prize was kissing a pig (okay, okay… actually she did win the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Suspense and Mystery also). Her current claim to fame is showing off her mother, who looks just like former First Lady Barbara Bush
When she’s not working or spending time with her family, she enjoys singing, playing the guitar, and exploring small, unsuspecting towns where people have no idea how accident prone she is.

This was a strong, intense suspense story that I really enjoyed. It didn't have the lighthearted humor of Christy's Gabby St. Claire series, but it was still a good read.

The tension was strong throughout this book because both of the main characters have secrets that they can't tell the other, so it's basically a tug-of-war over who's going to be honest first. Throw in super spies, a creepy house, and a murder and you're in for a wild ride!

I loved the setting and fell in love with the island of Smuggler's Cove.

4 stars for a high-intensity, thrill ride.

Favourite character: Bailey
Least favourite character: N/A

Mini-review: See, I knew I was right to give this author another chance. In the last book (Desperate Measures), I gave 1 star because the main character annoyed the heck out of me if I’m completely honest. I think she used the fight or flight term for these two because Samantha is flight while Bailey is fight. I loved Bailey, she was feisty but also scared, which fit because it’s real.

Different

Christy has written a different type of spy story. I liked it. It started out a bit differently for me than most books I read, but definitely got better.

"Hidden Agenda", by Christy Barritt, was released under Harlequin's Love Inspired Suspense line in March 2015. I picked up this title because I liked Ms. Barritt's novel, "Dubiosity", which I reviewed earlier in January of this year.

The protagonists in "Hidden Agenda" are Bailey Williams, a home care nurse, and Ed Carter, a CIA agent. They are brought together by the death of Ed's father, when Ed returns to Smuggler's Cove, the island which his father retired to after a lifelong career with the State Department. Bailey is less than impressed with the son who did not make it home in time for his own father's funeral. She isn't even certain of Ed's identity, because Mr. Carter, Ed's father, did not keep any photos of Ed in his home. She had been told that Ed is a lawyer, but he doesn't seem to behave or act like one. Ed, who is convinced that his father's death was actually a murder, is suspicious of Bailey, wondering if she played any part in Mr. Carter's death. One of Mr. Carter's friends had left Ed a cryptic message, but had died under mysterious circumstances, just as his father had.

As the novel progresses, the attraction between Bailey and Ed grows, but several factors prevent them from trusting each other. Ed needs to search through his father's belongings to find out if his dad was hiding classified information on his estate, and wonders why Bailey is remaining at Smuggler's Cove even though her duties towards his family are finished. Bailey has been threatened several times by an unknown assailant who also promises to hurt and kill her relatives if she does not help him to recover secret information that Mr. Carter has hidden away on his estate. She is also warned not to tell Ed about the threats, otherwise her family will be harmed. Ed, who has been burned before by an ex-girlfriend who turned out to be a spy, senses that Bailey is holding back information from him and continues to wonder if she is working for the people that were responsible for getting his father killed, even though he gets to know her character better. His mistrust doesn't encourage Bailey to ask him for help against the threats that she is facing in spite of her developing feelings for him. Will Ed and Bailey be able to trust and help each other? Will they find out who killed Mr. Carter, and will they find what he hid on his property?

I found this novel to be fairly suspenseful and fast paced. There are secrets, danger, intrigue, espionage, death threats, and attempts against people's lives, unsuccessful, and successful. I would also say that there seems to be no character that is wasted; each seems to play a fairly significant role in the plot, however minor it may be. I thought that this made the novel tightly written and I appreciated the development of the plot and the economic use of the characters that were introduced in the story. I did not guess the identities of the antagonists; I don't know if this was just laziness or fuzziness in my thinking, but when they were revealed, I had a moment of, "Yeah,...of course...that makes sense...," for one of them, and for the other, I appreciated the author's use of another character that had been fleetingly introduced earlier in the story and of whom I had not expected to hear about again.

I enjoyed reading "Hidden Agenda", and will probably read more of Ms. Barritt's work in the future.

TO CATCH A KILLER

Trusting the wrong person had gotten his father killed. CIA agent Ed Carter isn't about to repeat the mistake. Pulling a gun on nurse Bailey Williams may not have been the smartest idea, but the beautiful caretaker is Ed's only suspect in the murder. Problem is, her vulnerable brown eyes claim innocence and set off his protective instincts.

The spark between them is undeniable, but Bailey could never trust her life—or her heart—to a man who thinks her guilty. But when the real killer returns and threatens not just her but her family, Bailey must place her faith in the only man who can keep them from being silenced forever…

HIDDEN AGENDA is a based on a secondary character in Ms. Barritt’s holiday novel, High Stakes Holiday Reunion. That was a great book, and romantic suspense fans will want to read it, even though HIDDEN AGENDA stands alone. I want to go back and reread that book, since I don’t remember Ed from it.

Neither Ed or Bailey were very trusting. They were both suspicious of the other, with good reason. Ed believed his father was murdered. The only suspect he can see is Bailey—especially when he discovers she’s named in the will.

But there is someone else there, someone apparently living in the mansion with them, and watching their every move. What bothered me most is he kept threatening Bailey and telling her that if she values her sister’s life she won’t tell Ed, yet the killer keeps leaving obvious clues that she/he’s there and threatening her—and leaving them where Ed can find them. Bailey wasn’t too smart to not pick up on the fact that Ed—who is a lawyer and a CIA agent—is intelligent enough to figure things out on his own. And the “bad guy” wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box either.

The story is well written with plenty of red herrings to keep the reader guessing who-dun-it. I learned some things I didn’t know about the world of espionage. Interesting book with lots of action. Love Inspired Suspense likes the heroine kept scared and on the run in their books and Ms. Barritt succeeds in writing edge-of-your-seat romantic suspense.

A spooky mansion. Faulty electricity. A murder to solve. A fledgling romance. Don’t miss HIDDEN AGENDA.

Available in ebook and paperback. 226 pages.

Hidden Agenda
By Christy Barritt

Publ: Love Inspired Suspense c. 2015

From the stormy night at the story’s beginning with the heroine sitting in a mansion all alone when she hears an unidentified noise to the end when the murderer is identified the reader is caught up in the mystery and intrique of this book.
Bailey Williams has been the nurse to Bill Carter for several months on the secluded island of Smuggler’s Cove. Now Bill is dead, and she is preparing to leave the island and find a new position. The night before she is to leave a storm hits the small island. In the midst of the storm Bailey finds herself face-to-face with a supposed intruder only to find out the he is in fact Bill’s son Ed. Ed believes, with just cause, his father was murdered and is determined to find out who did it. Bailey is trapped into helping Ed solve the murder and at the same time find some secretted documents to save her sister’s life.
The uneasy relationship between Ed and Bailey progresses as they work together. Each of them is aware that the other is hiding something from them. Bailey is unaware that Ed is a CIA operative. Ed is unaware that Bailey has been threatened and that her life and the life of her sister are in danger.
Follow the progress of Ed and Bailey’s investigation. See who really is friend and who is foe. Watch as the plot takes more than one unexpected, but believable. twist after another. Be surprised at the way the story plays out and the satisfying outcome is achieved.

A suspense-filled winner from Christy Barritt!

My first taste of Christy Barritt's writing was a Love Inspired Suspense book that I picked up at a book sale. That first book started an addiction, one that I gleefully give in to. Hidden Agenda was everything I expected and more. Fast-paced and exciting, I was kept glued to the pages. Daily life ceased to exist for the hours that I was immersed in the story.

I think Hidden Agenda has one of my favorite Love Inspired covers. The debris covered beach, old rowboat, and the sun peeking through storm clouds, really match the book and hint at the story within.

As with all Love Inspired Suspense titles, Hidden Agenda is a somewhat short, easy to read story filled with mystery, romance, and some surprise twists and turns. I really liked the main characters. Both rely on their faith to get them through. Bailey will do anything to protect her family and Ed risks his own life for his country on a regular basis. And they are both determined to get to the bottom of what is going on in the big rambling old house.

Spies, international consequences, an old man's death, a sleepy little island, a storm, a man with past, and woman on a mission.... Find out what they all have in common. What are you waiting for?

This book draws you in right from the beginning. I could feel the tension of the storm and cared right away that Bailey would be safe. Both Bailey and Ed were keeping secrets from each other, but they needed to trust each other if they were going to the people who wanted to cause them harm. As the story goes on you get little tidbits of information that help evidentially help solve the mystery. The story moved at a good pace and keep my interest the whole way. I enjoyed that the main characters shared a common faith in God rather the typical storyline of one character leading another to faith. I found this made the relationship connection more real.

I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.

Nurse Bailey Williams is a compassionate nurse, taking care of an elderly man until he died, then staying on to tie up loose ends. She thinks her patient's son is a real jerk for missing his father's last days and funeral. As she's ready to move on and find another job, the son, Ed, shows up, during a terrible storm, while the electricity is out. Ed thinks Bailey may have murdered his father. Hence, the stage is set for mystery and romance. Both Bailey and Ed are hiding pretty big secrets and neither one quite trusts the other well enough to confide in each other. Bad guys, threats, murder, mystery, spies, storms, and "accidents" all collide in Christy Barritt's latest Christian Suspense novel. I received this book in exchange for a fair review.

This is a book that I had to work hard to not skip ahead to see how things turn out. Right from the start you find yourself wondering what will happen next and who will be involved. It was interesting to see who to trust and who was not who they seemed to be.
Bailey was wrapping up her duties as a nurse for Ed's father when a storm delays her departure. It is further delayed by a series of events that she tries at first to handle on her own, but soon realizes that she need help, but is not sure who to trust.
I had read the first book in this series, so while it was nice to get an update on a few characters, it is not necessary to have read the first book to enjoy this one.

Christy Barritt gave me a signed paperback of Hidden Agenda. Can you imagine being threatened with the death of your sister if you cannot find something and you don't know what that something is? Bailey Williams has just one week to comply with the killer's demands. She is a nurse and her patient just died. The man's son, Ed Carter, thinks it is murder. They become partners in solving the mystery even though they are suspicious of one another. this was a most intense and dangerous story. It was terrific! Hurry to get it if you like a fast-paced novel full of suspense and danger. There is even a touch of romance!

Trouble In (Smuggler's Cove)Paradise

Nurse Bailey has finished taking care of the affairs of her patient who died. She hears someone breaking in and is terrified. She finds out it is her ex-inpatients son who couldn't take time to come see his father or be at his funeral. Before she can figure out if she can trust him she is threatened by an unknown man. He tells her to get the info he needs or he will kill her family. Not sure who to trust she must stick around to figure out what is going on. Another great mystery/suspense book by Christy Barritt. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

Edge of your seat suspense!

This book is hard to put down and leaves you wanting the heroine, Bailey, to find what she is looking for before the person who threatened her family makes good on his threats. Her boss's son seems like he can help but can she trust him? Will she find the information the killer wants, should she tell Ed, who has his own secrets? If you love a good suspense novel, this is one to read! Thanks to the author for the gift of this book in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own thoughts after reading this book.

A spy thriller that left me gasping in delight. There's something so sinister about a good spy story, isn't there? Hair-raising scenes kept me on edge as the suspense grew tauter until I didn't know what to expect next. And Bailey and Ed? Great romantic tension. Both keeping secrets, both suspicious of the other but undeniably attracted too. Hidden Agenda is page-turning read you won't want to miss out on.

This is a must read. I love a book so good you don't want to put it down! Its full of action and has a little bit of romance too which I like! My favorite quote from the book "Never give up. We've got to keep pressing ahead. God often steps in at our lowest moments and shows us another way." What a great thing to live by! Another great book from Christy Barritt!

This book was interesting because of the spy aspect. Wondering whether Ed's father and Ed were spies and what information the killer was after was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the mystery and romance combination and appreciated the undertone of trust and faith that resounded throughout the book. Another great book by a great author.

I do believe this is my favorite story by Christy Barritt to date. I enjoyed catching up with Ed Carter again. I am partial to Island living and Smuggler's Cove was a great place to watch as Ed and Bailey figure out what happened to his dad and to watch them fall in love. This was a great mystery.

A great read.

Good characters, good mystery, and the romance doesn't get in the way of the story. This is my favorite book by Christy Barritt. I'm again impressed by the way she creates a compelling mystery without making it R rated.

It just didn't pull me in and I didn't much care who did it. The author seems to think not explaining things adds romantic tension. I gave it 2 stars since I did finish it.
