The Making of a Man: Notes on Transsexuality
In the autumn of 2012, Maxim Februari—known until then as writer and philosopher Marjolijn Februari—announced his intention to live as a man. The news was greeted with a diversity of reactions, from curiosity to unease. These responses made it absolutely clear to Februari that most of us don’t know how to think about transsexuality. The Making of a Man explores this lacuna through a deeply personal meditation on a profoundly universal aspect of our identities.
Februari contemplates the many questions that sexual transitions entail: the clinical effects of testosterone, the alteration of sexual organs, and its effects on sexual intimacy; how transsexuality figures in the law; and how it challenges the way we talk about sex and gender, such as the seemingly minor—but crucially important—difference between the terms “transsexual” and “transgender.” He analyzes our impressions of effeminate men and butch women, separating apparent acceptance from actual prejudice, and critically examines the curious requirement in many countries that one must demonstrate a psychological disturbance—a “gender identity disorder”—in order to be granted sex change therapies. From there he explores the seemingly endless minutiae changing genders or sex effect, from the little box with an M or an F on passports to the shockingly sudden way testosterone can adjust physical features.
With his characteristically clear voice combined with intimate—sometimes moving, sometimes funny—ruminations, Februari wakes readers up to all the ways, big and small, our world is structured by sex and gender.

Die stralende Bo - vroeger Boudewijn - bij dwdd ontroerde me. Intrigerend fenomeen, genderonbehagen en -welbehagen. En de volgende dag lag dit boekje met notities van een ervaringsdeskundige voor mijn neus in de boekwinkel. Verhelderend.

Notities. De titel zegt het eigenlijk al. Geen verhaal of roman, maar notities.
En ik vond het eigenlijk een beetje saai. Alsof Maxim een boek(je) schreef waar hij zich verplicht toe voelde.
Tot ik me inbeeldde dat hij het voorlas.
Toen in zijn stem erbij bedacht las het ineens een stuk prettiger.
Naast wat droog en wat saai misschien was het toch ook boeiend en zaten er wat eyeopeners in.
Waar ik zelf nooit zo bij stil had gestaan was dat de transitie van vrouw naar man of andersom meer een sociale en maatschappelijke verschuiving is waar je je in begeeft. Leerzaam dus. Waarvoor dank!

The book is a mixed bag. Some parts are clearly meant as educational for cis audience that hasn't had exposure to trans issues, and the way they've been handled is good (if a bit boring if you already "know your manners"). That's 4 stars. Some parts are kind of outdated and bordered on controversial, depending on who you're asking. 3 stars here, though I can't be mad. For the personal reflections solid 5 stars - they are witty, eloquent, and I could relate to a lot.
The biggest disappointment in the book is that he sure isn't joking about these being just notes. it reads more like a collection of his newspaper columns than an actual book. For me it was difficult to engage with this format. 3 stars. Yet, I also really don't want to bury this book on Goodreads with a 3 star rating, because we already hear little enough from trans men culturally.
So, the math comes to 4 stars, but with reservations.

‘Over twee jaar bellen mensen niet langer om over mijn lichaam te praten. Over een jaar gaat Wikipedia zich gedragen, schrijft bijvoorbeeld iets informatiefs over mijn werk en blijft niet langer in mijn privébestaan roeren. Na een leven van twijfel ben ik nu voorbij aan de duivelse splitsing in de weg - zal ik wel, zal ik niet - en dus kan ik eindelijk gewoon net als anderen gaan leven. Ik zie ernaar uit.’

Funny, smart and informative first-person account of the author's transition, with lots of useful info on etiquette, language and history. Also, he's a pretty stellar writer who does a lot with few words.

Maxim Februari heeft deze week de P.C. Hoofdprijs gekregen. Helemaal verdiend! Zijn columns in NRC lees ik graag omdat hij helder en prikkelend zijn ongewone kijk geeft op ontwikkelingen in onze maatschappij. ‘De maakbare man’ las ik dit najaar, in een turbulente tijd die we als familie doormaken als het gaat om gender.
Het boek geeft een goed beeld van hoe het is om als transgender eindelijk ‘thuis’ te komen in het lichaam dat je past. Wat er fysiek verandert, wat het doet met je emoties en hoe de omgeving erop reageert. Dit laatste is soms ontluisterend. ‘Heb je ook een penis?’ En: ‘hoe doe je dat nu, met seks?’ Vragen die niet in je hoofd op komen om aan willekeurig wie dan ook te stellen.
Je zou misschien denken dat ‘De maakbare man’ een zwaar boekje is. Nee hoor. De humor en zelfspot deed mij regelmatig schateren. En ook de literaire stijl maakt dat je het in één ruk wilt uitlezen.
Toen Maxim Februari dir jaar zomergast was, zei hij, toen het natuurlijk ook ging om zijn transitie: ‘Wij hebben ook beroepen, hoor.’ Genoeg over het onderwerp gezegd dus.

Lekker geschreven en kort genoeg om bij de kern te blijven. Een praktische gids voor de mensen die het niet snappen en willen weten hoe het zit. Transseksualiteit 101 voor dummies, zeg maar. Hopelijk bereikt het nog voor "cismensen" en steken ze er ook iets van op.

Ons perspectief op non-cis identiteiten is volop in ontwikkeling en dit boek uit 2013 is dan ook inmiddels hier en daar achterhaald. Dat doet niets af aan de persoonlijke ervaringen die Februari deelt, en zijn visie op de trans status quo van 2013. En er zijn veel passages die juist nu (weer) relevant zijn: “Voor mij is onzichtbaarheid op de werkplek niet goed denkbaar. Ik heb geen baan die ik kan opzeggen om aan de andere kant van het land onder een nieuwe naam van voren af aan te beginnen. (...) Ook de talloze mensen die me laten weten hoe “moedig” ze het vinden dat ik mijn besluit in het openbaar bekend heb gemaakt, vergeten dat heimelijkheid hier geen optie was. (...) Maar als je er iets langer over nadenkt, zie je dat complimenten over mijn moed in feite tekenen van afkeuring zijn. Of je het nu moedig noemt of rellerig, in beide gevallen verklaar je een geslachtsverandering zo scandaleus en schokkend dat een ander het niet in zijn hoofd zou halen erover te beginnen.” Je hebt gelijk, Maxim Februari.

I've been looking for a nice, clear book to give to people if/when they want more information on my transition, and I'm glad I picked this one up. A good book for people who think they might be transmasculine, cis people curious about the whole thing but not wanting to ask too many intrusive questions, and just well-written and interesting in general. The usual caveats that Februari is a white straight trans man from Europe and that colors his experience, ergo it should not be seen as universal. Still, it's a good, inclusive book that talks about nonbinary genders and makes note of the fact that some trans people are gay, bi/pan or ace.

Interessante bespiegelingen over sekse-transitie in een uiterst rustige schrijfstijl.
Intrigerend was voor mij de opmerking: 'Het is niet omdat ik zo mannelijk ben, dat ik een geslachtsaanpassende behandelingen wil, maar omdat ik een man ben'. Februari geeft terecht aan dat je identiteit niet een kwaliteit is die je moet bewijzen (ook bijvoorbeeld aan pyschologen in het transitietraject) - het gaat erom dat je bent wie je bent. Eigenlijk vanzelfsprekend, maar het expliciet benoemen hiervan in dit boek had ik nodig om dit te beseffen.

Maxim Februari liet in 2012 weten voortaan door het leven te gaan als man. Dat maakte nogal wat los en daar schreef hij dit boekje over. In de hoop dat zijn notities ‘kunnen dienen als hulpmiddel bij persoonlijke of maatschappelijke gesprekken – opdat het praten over transseksualiteit niet blijft hangen in schaamte en schaamteloosheid’. Leerzaam, intelligent en geestig (je zou kunnen zeggen dat Dolly Parton ook ‘in een verkeerd lichaam’ geboren is). Niet alleen over transseksualiteit maar ook over ‘mannen’ en ‘vrouwen’.

Mooie en genuanceerde notities over transitie, én alles wat daarbij komt kijken. De ondertitel is treffend, want het het boek bestaat precies daaruit: notities over verschillende themas. Het leest daarom meer als verschillende columns, dan één verhaal. Februari gaat ook in op de vraag wat het nou precies betekent om man of vrouw te zijn. Conclusie is uiteraard dat daar geen concreet antwoord op te geven valt. Februari schrijft vlot, vloeiend en met humor. Hij weet het persoonlijke steeds goed te verbinden met grotere ideeën en thema's die nu veel in het nieuws en op internet terug komen.

Erg interessant boek. Het was niet allemaal nieuw voor me, op internet kun je veel van de informatie al vinden, maar de hoofdstukken Vrouw en Man zaten vol met 'food for thought'. Grappig genoeg moest ik door dit boek vaak aan Het houden van mannen van Myrthe van der Meer denken. En aan gesprekken met mijn vader en mijn zwagers. En aan gesprekken met mijn moeder en zussen. Man, die boeken van filosofen zetten je aan het denken. ;-)

Inzichtelijk en nuchter boek over transseksualiteit, rustig opgebouwd. Voelt soms alweer een tikje achterhaald, ondanks dat ik de versie uit 2020 las. Maxim Februari heeft een belangrijke stem in deze tijd.

Trying to be a little bit of everything As timing would have it, I was reading this as Caitlyn Jenner introduced herself to the world via a 'Vanity Fair' magazine. The author, however, is a man so obviously his experiences are different.
I am trying to educate myself more about transgender people and their experiences. I had hoped this would be a helpful book, but in all honesty I found it a bit confusing. It was part memoir, part "how to", part textbook about what his experiences were in taking testosterone, navigating everyday social interactions, what it was like to cope with this as a child, etc. It was trying to be a mishmash of everything and unfortunately I found it difficult to follow. Some sections were useful (use of pronouns, questions that NOT appropriate to ask, etc.). I was already familiar with some of the terms and concepts, but I still found it useful to read.
It is also translated from Dutch, which may account also as to why I had some trouble with the work. But the book does not claim to be definitive by any standard--indeed it says right on the cover it's "Notes on Transsexuality."
As a primer or as a very basic book it might be a good reference. However I know this wasn't enough for me and I'll be looking at other books.

Philosophy professor Maxim Februari's thoughtful and perceptive first hand account of F2M transition is matter-of-fact though some academic colleagues failed to understand his need to become a man. Transgender is his preferred term, despite the book's subtitle; as he says it's more about gender identity than sexual orientation. He's clear on what not to say to people undergoing transition: 'How will you have sex?" is not the first question you'd put to anyone disabled, trans, gay or straight. F2M trans people are people, get over it, bi/Lez/hetero, so what? He has felt estranged by sensational media coverage, also patronised by friends: "Are you happy now?" a difficult question for all of us. This is a great text for friends and relatives of trans people to read. The effects of testosterone build gradually over time. One striking side effect is how hard it becomes to cry. The eyes water and nothing more. Maxim normalises the trans experience: many people have difficulty living with their body, some have surgery as Transgender people do. Despite greater visibility there are more obstacles to overcome, ignorance, hate crime and official recognition. A heartening and welcome book.

Dit boek heeft mij heel wat eye-openers geboden. Wat fijn om op zo'n luchtige manier te lezen hoe het nou zit met transgender en/of transseksueel zijn. Ik denk dat heel wat mensen hier wat van kunnen leren, want er zijn inderdaad heel wat ongemakkelijke momenten (zeg ik nou hij of zij? Is 'ie omgebouwd of niet?) De heerlijke anekdotes in dit boek brachten keer op keer een glimlach op mijn gezicht.
Ik heb dit boek in het kader van mijn studie Nederlandse taal en cultuur gelezen. In een ander artikel heb ik de volgende zin gelezen: "One is not born but becomes a woman." Sluit prachtig aan bij dit boek.
Er is één ding dat ik miste in dit boek: de kwestie 'het'. Veel mensen zeggen namelijk 'het' over een transseksueel persoon. Iets wat eigenlijk best respectloos is.
Al met al een erg fijn boek om te lezen. Lekker helder.

I've made every one of the faux pas mentioned at the start of the book in conversations with our son, Nate. However, I take some comfort in this quote from the book:" Anyoe afraid of beinb cissexist should bear in mind that most transgender people have spent so much time reflecting on human shortcomings that they have become unusually tolerant and will not easily take offence at what others say."

Februari a Dutch philosopher has written a short book about gender and transitioning. It would be an important read for anyone interested in trans culture.
