The high-powered high life loses all its allure in the face of family tragedy.
A return to the Gulf Coast life and a chance to reconnect and reclaim what really matters leads to unexpected passion and a final chance at true love in this tumultuous summer romance from best-selling author Gerri Hill!
Gerri began writing lesbian romance as a way to amuse herself while snowed in one winter in the mountains of Colorado, and hasn’t looked back. Her first published work came in 2000 with One Summer Night. Many more romances have followed, with the occasional murder mystery in the mix. Gerri’s love of nature and of being outdoors usually makes its way into her stories as her characters often find themselves in beautiful natural settings. When she isn’t writing, Gerri and her longtime partner, Diane, can be found at their home in East Texas, where their vegetable garden, orchard, and five acres of woods keep them busy. They share their lives with an ever-changing cast of furry friends. Her favorite pastimes include camping, hiking, birdwatching (though she insists she doesn’t wear funny hats yet!), photography, and cooking. She collects things nature offers, like an unusual pinecone, colorful rocks, or an abandoned bird feather. Dawn is her favorite time of day, the moment right before sunrise... "I love the morning... the beginning of a brand new day. Because even things that we know are unattainable flutter within our grasp. In the early morning—at that cusp of a new day—everything is possible."
This is exactly the kind of read I needed after my last book. Jordan Sims takes a leave of absence from her lucrative financial position to return home to Rockport after her brother dies. Her parents run a restaurant and her brother ran an eclectic gift shop. Still grieving, her parents can't run both so Jordan offers to run the gift shop. The only person who knows terribly much about the shop is Annie, a divorcee trying to get her college degree.
It's a gentle read, with adults communicating like adults and with very little angst. Both are likeable characters and it's well-written.
I'm not sure Pelican's Landing is a good representation of Gerri Hill's skills. I know I've read much better by her. This one just didn't work for me. Everything happens too smoothly, too easily. I was shocked by how lightly Jordan's brother's death was dealt with. I'm not saying there is a single way to grieve, but there has to be a bit of pain, right? Some intensity. This was just a happy-ever-after story where death was a convenient way to put two women together.
Also, Gerri Hill usually gives us much more heat and chemistry. I was really disappointed. This read like amateur work.
Despite the multiple cliché and usual Gerri Hill stance (lesbian meet heterosexual woman who is in FACT a lesbian), I really enjoy this one. It's my favourite of GH.
When I am low (like fever high or very moody), this is the kind of cherry-bubble-champagne book I want to reach for.
This is a gem of a romance. Absolutely traditional and classic, lesbian/straight girl, falling in love but obstacles in the way.. and of course a happy ending. I read it on a beach and it was just the light and sunny escapism I love.
Gerri Hill writes excellent books. All her traditional romances are different enough to engage, the plot twists are unusual.. this is certainly one we wouldn’t have expected, and the “will she wont she” angst just strong enough to make us pause, even though we have no doubt they will eventually work it out.
The characters, both main and supporting cast, are well drawn, familiar and whole, their foibles and concerns recognisable and believable. Ms Hill subtly uses the interactions of the wider groups to draw out the personalities of the major players without ever having to heavy-handedly tell us what she can more sensitively portray.
As always the settings are well drawn and used to add a flavour to the books. Ms Hill uses the landscape and local traditions, from foods to holidays, to add a depth to the placement of her stories. Fat Larry may be one of the more unusual landmarks in a lesbian romance, but he represents a strong grounding in the books location.
I get to read a great many novels by debut or relatively new authors and there are so many lessons they could learn about subtlety from Gerri Hill. Another good read, wholly light and pleasant, thoroughly enjoyable.
This was cute enough and sweet enough, as most of Hill's romances are. I think I prefer her crime novels to just her straight up romances because they tend to have a bit more substance. The ending of this one shoves everything into neat little boxes, without having earned the full conflict resolution it gives. But it was still a decent enough read.
Gerri Hill can do (and has done) way better than this book. It's not bad. It's just not as awesome as I'm used to when it comes to her book which disappointed me
Nice read. I enjoyed this one a bit more than the last couple I've read by Hill, I think. But I do have a soft spot for pregnant women. I didn't care all that much for the narrator but she was still better than some. Just had some issues with her inflections and some of her character voice choices. The mothers both sounded snooty and Jordan often sounded a touch snotty. But the story was good, I thought. Not sure if I'd read it again. I guess I'll find out.
I really enjoy Gerri Hill's books. A little predictable, but I was willing to pretend I didn't know what would happen. I liked the characters, loved the setting, and would recommend the book to anyone.
I hadn't read a Hill book in awhile, I got burnt out on her crime romances, this one is just a straight up romance though, and I really enjoyed it.
Both characters were lovely, they spend a lot of time together, and their relationship developed naturally. Given their particular set of circumstances, the dramas that could have/did crop up or would usually be roadblocks seem to just be glossed over, and everything came up rosy (even with the two characters that were putting up any kind of fuss).
Still I enjoyed the romance between Annie and Jordan too much to really be bothered by the fact that the road to true love for these two wasn't particularly bumpy. If you're in the mood for a sweet HEA romance, then this should fit the bill.
Typical Gerri Hill: Lesbian girl meets straight girl. They become friends. Straight girl not so straight after all. Some hiccups, they live happily ever after.
And yet I find myself drawn to the books of Gerri Hill (all but those horrific "sci fi" weird shit, wth?!) I love her writing style. Yes, all characters are written with the same template and yet they still differentiate enough to keep me entertained. She has an ease in her writing and her descriptions make the scenery come alive.
This book specifically is not one of her best, but still worth the read.

It's a well written novel. I loved the way the relationship developed and I loved the chemistry between them. It has very interesting plots. Fast paced and a real entertaining read. I heartily recommend this novel. It makes you feel good.
Nice, light story with just enough tension to keep it interesting but not remove it from being the distraction reading I wanted. I especially liked the pluck of Annie and the very wise, yet young, Jordan, and their interactions.
Another great one by Geri Hill -- I really liked this one. The writing was nice, the buildup was slow and the romance was believable -- the lovely idyllic Texas town where even the bible thumper comes around through the power of love was a little trite but romance is a fantasy after all. There could have been a little more characterization and something to do for the secondary characters, but all in all an enjoyable read
While I'm used to more depth of feeling from Gerri in her books, this was by no means a bad read, if somewhat simplistic and fairly forgettable. A cute, quick story, probably well suited to times when you don't really want to invest too much of yourself into a book. Again, not bad (and certainly far better than a LOT of similar books in this genre), but nothing special either. Gerri will still always be one of my go-to authors for a good romance. (3.5 at a push)
This is a sweet romance, with enjoyably little drama and miscommunication between the two leads -- three stars for the story, with one extra for giving us characters who handle themselves with frankness and maturity.
This wasn’t a bad book, but might have been better for me if I’d read it instead of listening to the audiobook. I did think the ending was too easy. Annie’s mother had such strong homophobic feelings that she wasn’t shy about expressing them(and her high regard for her ex SIL after several years was annoying and unnatural). For her to have all but abandoning her daughter because she couldn’t control her, then become so accepting in the last chapter was too quick and forced. I also didn’t care for the characterizations of the narrator. Like I said, I probably would appreciate this book if I could read it.
Good things about this book and this author that I’ve come to appreciate are the descriptions given of the location. They make you feel as though you are there. I’ve always liked that.
I'm working my way through all of Hill's books and this was near the bottom of my list. The title and cover make it seem boring, and the synopsis is really non-existant. But this is absolutely one of her best. I mean, bordering on Sam and Tori great, for those of you that have read the Hunter books. It's got some elements I have yet to see in any other Hill book (or really any lesbian romance by any author) and while it does follow the typical plot you can find in all her books, it isn't so blatantly cookie cutter. I loved it. I'll read it again for sure. Don't overlook this one!
I enjoyed this book. Gerri Hill offers a different take on romance than some of the other authors that I read. The interaction of the characters is steady and interesting, and they are well developed and interesting. There was a somewhat laid back feel to the book, and I think that this was somewhat deliberate. I found myself wanting to get the feel of this place, but was dismayed to find that the town had been devastated by a hurricane since her writings. The undercurrent of intolerance was there and I found myself fighting for the characters as they pushed back against it. All in all, a good book with a turbulent but happy ending. I would recommend this book.
What a journey to find peace and love in the one unimaginable place, home.
The very real journey from not knowing your heart to finding peace can begin in the most awful moment. This is a story that deals with relationships on so many levels. Gerri Hill brings a light yet very strong story about awakening to new feelings as you learn to listen to your heart. A loss begins an unfolding of healing with so many of the characters. Great dynamics and gentle care bring story to life. You feel like you are at Pelican's Landing and enjoying a time so unrushed. Beautifully written story.

...that's it. Not much else to go on, but I'm a fan of Gerri Hill and will read anything from her. I was not disappointed. Good storyline, sweet romance, a little family drama....a great read!!
Fun. This book was a lovely romance. It lacked a lot of the intense drama so commonly associated with Ms. Hill's novels, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. The romance was light and airy, but with some unfortunate intolerance of certain characters, giving tension to the story. Unlike some of the other reviews, I enjoyed this story a great deal.
Every once in a while I just feel like taking some Gerri Hill. Because I need it. Because there's always tension and lingering and lust. The chapters are short and the books not too many pages, the stories solid and enjoyable. So as always I got my thrill again. This time with a great story involving Jordan and Annie.
Tip: never judge a (gerri hill) book by it's cover.
I have read many of Gerri Hills books and have enjoyed them all. This book is a very good romance. I loved the characters they are well developed and very likable. Highly recommend this book. Thanks
