Breakneck #3

Shadowing Me

Rate this book
Welcome back to the world of Breakneck where Pyro continues to mourn the loss of Lana, ZZ’s twins drive him crazy, and the whole MC prepares for the birth of Braxxon and Winter’s child. Things are quiet and calm… Or so it seems.

Shadow’s secrets are slowly being revealed, leaving him powerless to stop the resulting havoc. With Tatiana hot on his trail every time he turns around, the tables have turned, and now, she has become his Shadow.
As Winter and Braxxon begin a hostile takeover of the BDSM club owned by Shadow’s best friend, the unthinkable happens, and the result is the worst bloodshed in Breakneck history. The torture, violence, and death caused by the carnage will have the entire MC reeling from the loss.

When Shadow finally decides to stop denying his feelings for Tatiana, he discovers it may be too late. The Breakneck family loss is far too great for Tatiana to think about her own feelings for the one man who has constantly resisted her.

Causing further drama for the Breakneck crew, the Russians step back into the picture. Whether they are friend or foe remains to be seen. And when Winter gets an unexpected visitor, it throws Tatiana in a fit of rage and rebellion.

Welcome back to the real world of Breakneck… where bloodshed and mayhem are to be expected.

Tatiana has it bad for Shadow. The member of Breakneck that is always lurking in the back ground, keeping an eye on everyone. The same one we learned in book two had a bit of a kinky streak that revealed his need for pain. But Tatiana isn’t about to let a little bit of pain scare her away from the man she craves.

Shadow has a single outlet for his demons, he fucks them out with pain. He learned at an early age that he needed a bit more to get him off than just a willing woman. But hurting Tatiana like that, well that is not something he easily comes to terms with. But when jealousy rears its ugly head, he finally gives in to his desire to make her his and to bring her to the edge.

While these two battle out the attraction a few unexpected guest show up and add a few wrenches into the lives of these bikers. Toss in the stress of Winter’s pregnancy and a promise that Shadow made a friend years ago that has come due... things are not settling down for these bad-ass-bikers anytime soon.

--------

There was quite a bit going on in this book, so much of the story that I wanted for Shadow and Tatiana revolved around the other cast of characters. I read the post where Ms. Spears explains the way she will be breaking out Shadow’s story so she can give him the space to be properly told, and I have to say after reading this, I am on board with that idea fully. I did not get the fix of Shadow I really craved, his story was my most anticipated of this series thus far and I am glad that we aren’t done with him just yet.

But at the same time, that was sort of my downfall when it came to enjoying this fully. It could be that I had too high of hopes, wanted Shadow too fiercely... whatever it was, I just felt detached. Shadow had a few moments where his broken was glorious but then I struggled to find any lingering attraction when it came to the way he was sexually. I don’t mind a sadist, hell one of my favorite book boyfriends is one... but I just couldn’t get that sexy feel to the scenes in this. The chemistry and build up was there... but the steam just faded as he became a bit too aggressive and harsh.

I have a feeling that his continuing story might bring us that side of him, and I really hope it does. And although this is expected to be Shadow’s book – it was like a bridge to gap the next in the Breakneck series and set up Shadow’s next book that will take place.

Did I want this to be more? Yes. Do I expect that the next will be more enjoyed? Yes. So although this did not hit all my buttons, I have no doubt that I will fall back in love with these characters as the next books are released.

I didn't like the first book and haven't read the second book yet but I've been pretty curious about Shadow and Tatiana. I was interested in Pyro and Lana's story but then she died so I gave up. I can't read their story or I'll get sad and emotional. That was not fair!!!

"Shadowing Me" is brooding Shadow and bratty Tatiana's grippy tale. Once again, I got to see that nothing in the world of Breakneck is ever easy! Shadow has been fighting his attraction for Tatiana aka Tea/T in two or three books in this series mainly due to his kink of being a sadist but several situations happened that makes him no longer want to fight his darkness from Tea but go with it. Then 'it' happens and Tatiana feels like Shadows will give her that morning after speech but WOW was Tea so wrong! Tatiana was one of my least favorite characters in all the previous books of this series but in "Shadowing Me" I really got to see how this 18 young old college student grew up right before my eyes. That young woman has more balls than the President and Winter/Angel in some pivotal scenes in this story! Although she's still 'brat worthy' but also a loyal and loving brat!

The rest of the gang is back as well with some new characters to boot. One, a surprise visitor who was welcomed and encourage to stay under the MC's protector while the other visitor was, well hated almost on sight no doubt!

This story was full of twists and turns, drama, suspense, sexy moments and even scenes that will make you want to slaps some past and new characters (royalty) and another shocking death that will make your heart ache for the MC as a whole. The ending gave information of other books for this couple while they go off to New Orleans to help Shadow's mentor, Danick with the American Mafia - the Italians but as of today's date those books have yet to be published. I guess writer's block can be a beast uh!

I enjoyed this story... it really give me reader's whiplash!(lol)

I gave this gripping story, a memorable and gripping 4 star rating!

Moving on to "Discovering Me" -- Sniper and Piper's story!

I have read the first two books in this series and enjoyed them. I liked most of the characters from the previous books and was looking forward to Shadow/Tea's story. I considered the other two books stand alones with a complete or satisfying ending for the major couple. This book ends in a cliffy and sets up the stage for another "dark romance" series where Shadow/Tea's relationship continues. First let me say I love books with hot, erotic sex scenes and have no problem with spanking and light bondage. With that said, this book deals with the darker side of sadomasochism to include drawing blood and erotic asphyxiation or breath control play. Shadow has to see blood to really get off. I know that there are readers that like the darker erotic side and I truly believe to each his own, but no, this wasn't for me. While I thought I was totally free minded about that type of thing, I realized I also had a problem with Tea's father, ZZ, not having a problem at all with his daughter in that kind of thing.
We meet ZZ's son (Tea's twin brother) who ZZ had no knowledge of at all. Then shortly thereafter the son is killed but I won't go into the details because to be honest I really didn't understand the relationship between him and Winter's Russian sister who also showed up and was supposed to be a villain. There were too many things in this story that confused me and did not seem logical. But I still enjoyed reading about some of the characters from the previous books.

There were several eyeroll worthy scenes but I gave up when Shadow and Tatiana finally began to "play."

I'm officially done with this series. I had hope for Shadow and Tatiana's story. I thought it was going to be hot...but no. Shadow should have started Tatiana out easier, she was scared and stubborn and he should have sensed that, but he wanted her to change her mind so he wasn't mindful of her needs. I understand he's a sadist not a Dom but it wasn't sexy, it was uncomfortable and cringe worthy.

I skipped ahead to the end, their story is not complete. There's also a shocker but by this point I didn't even care.

If I would have read this when it first came out, think it would have worked better for me. Years later after my tastes in this theme have refined, the writing style isn't working for me. The BDSM storyline introduced in this book, doesn't feel "right". I didn't get far enough in to comfortably rate, but I'm checking out this series at this point.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Shadow and Tatiana...as twisted as "I" might sound now...are my new favorite couple. There is just something infinitely more interesting to me about people who have something abnormal and dangerous in their emotional make-up that causes them to crave the darkness like Shadow does...and Tatiana, despite her young age, is so obsessed with this man that she willingly falls into his lifestyle to keep him satisfied.
Surrounding the blossoming relationship between these two are Winter and Braxxon who are expecting a baby, and unfortunately have to deal with some major annoyances from her past in the form of unwelcome guests to the club. Pyro is still mourning the loss of his beloved Lana and just going through the motions of everyday life until a surprise turns up out of the blue that completely throws his world into a tailspin and he is left to re-live the painful memories all over again.
Meanwhile, ZZ and Storm are happily forming bonds with Mason, Tatiana's twin who has become a big part of the club and is hoping to become a member one day. He is a stubborn young man though and although his relationship with his dad and sister is starting to strengthen, someone else comes into his life that causes irreparable damage for all of them.
The Russians re-appearance both at the MC compound as well as the BDSM club that is owned by Shadow's best friend starts some major warfare and when bullets start flying, there will not only be blood but major casualties and heartbreak for the family of brothers and their women.
I am really trying hard to write a review as spoiler free as possible...but let me just tell you, if you have read the other books in the series, you will really want to hear Shadow and Tatiana's story! It is deliciously dark, sexy and forbidden, bordering on extremely dangerous, but underneath it all, I feel it is full of deep love. We will not fully get an HEA for them yet though as their story will continue on and we are also left hanging in suspense with a few other character's stories.
I will tell you that this is Crystal Spears at her best, on her "A" game and you will not be disappointed. I might add, without ruining anything, that this book has one of THE best smackdown scenes between Winter and her big bad Prez of a hubby...it made me laugh and just yell out "You go girl" to my kindle...and when Tatiana gets in on the action...I was just cheering!
A very thrilling and action-packed continuation to the Breakneck gang!

A Quick, Drama-Filled Read

As much as I've enjoyed the Breakneck series, this one just didn't do it for me. Ms. Spears indicated that 'Shadowing Me' would have a different feel than earlier books in this series and I can't disagree. Unfortunately, this new approach just wasn't one that appealed to me. My feelings for this book were lukewarm at best.

Focusing primarily on the relationship of Tatiana and Shadow, this book introduced us to Shadow's sadistic sexual needs. Although I usually love a little kink in my books, for some reason it just didn't do it for me this time around. Perhaps it is because the relationship between the two seemed to lack a deep emotional connection. I'm not exactly sure. The sex seemed cold and mechanical. Whatever the reason, it just wasn't as appealing to me.

Although Tatiana and Shadow were the primary focus of this book, there was a lot going on in the background. For such a short read, it was a little busy and the end result was a rushed feeling. I can see that this book has been used to serve as a bridge to later books to follow, paving the way for several other stories that are yet to be told. For me, it just was too much drama to have crammed into so few pages and too many issues left unresolved at the end of the book.

In the end, I didn't hate it, but didn't love it either. I'm left feeling like, "Meh, it's okay." It has been a while since I'd revisited this series and I'm on the fence as to whether or not I'll continue it beyond this point.

Crystal Spears and her Breakneck brethren are back, and they’re darker and grittier than ever before; demons from the past continue to threaten to eviscerate the tenuous calm that’s been created since all of their lives were torn to shreds by the Russians and the blowback that they brought with them. But for Shadow and Tatiana, there’s even more to get past in order for their relationship to get back on track, if that’s even possible with how much Shadow has pushed her away. Will these two finally give into their feelings for one another and take a chance at a relationship, or will Shadow be left to deal with his darkness on his own…afraid that his Sadist ways are too much for Tatiana to handle? Dive into Shadowing Me to find out.

Shadow is quite a complex character, and Crystal Spears gives readers an insider’s view at what makes him who he is. He’s a man full of rage, darkness, and the need to cause pain. But we also gain insight into is how he truly feels for Tatiana and why he’s keeping her at arm’s length when he would much rather be balls deep inside her giving them both pleasure and pain. There are many layers to Shadow, and Crystal Spears unravels him little by little, helping not only readers but Tea as well to truly understand the man behind this domineering and disciplined biker.

Tea’s grown up in the lifestyle, so she understands and hears more than she ever lets on, and that seems to help her handle Shadow and his hot/cold attitude slightly better. It doesn’t mean she’s okay with the treatment, and she lets that be known on more than one occasion. Tea sees past Shadow’s dark and tortured eyes and accepts him for who he is, kinky quirks and all, and she learns along the way that that pleasure/pain principle that Shadow lives by is one that truly frees her as well and makes her feel more alive than she ever thought possible. Readers witness Tea’s growth throughout the course of the text when she steps up more than once to defend herself and protect her family. She’s done being the little girl that everyone treats her as, and by the end of the story, it seems like she has the respect of almost every member of Breakneck.

It wouldn’t be a Crystal Spears book if the shit didn’t hit the fan in more ways than one in this story, and she definitely delivers the chaos and turmoil tenfold. What I love most about this series is that nothing is sugarcoated. Death and destruction exist in the Breakneck world and the grittiness and darkness of those terms is definitely demonstrated throughout Shadowing Me. But it’s not all bleakness because readers also get to see the no holds barred sexual side of the biker club and the fetishes and kink that the members like to experience.

I love this series, and Shadowing Me is a fantastic edition. Even though this is just the beginning part to Shadow and Tea’s story, it sets up who they are as individuals and what they hope to become as a couple. With everything that goes down in the text and where they are headed at the end, there’s definitely going to be some uphill battles for them, but if Tea has shown anything throughout the series, it’s that she’s a fighter who’s willing to work for what she wants, and Shadow is clearly who she wants and for that matter needs to make her feel alive.

Ever since Tatiana set her eyes on Shadow, she hasn't really wanted anyone else. She knows what he is into and has attempted to learn the ropes herself with some not so great results. But she isn't going to let that stop her from finally capturing Shadow's attention.

Shadow has been fighting his attraction for Tatiana for a while now. What's tormenting him, he doesn't want to taint her innocent soul with. He has many demons that he can only release one way...through inflicting pain on women during sex. He isn't so sure he can deal with hurting Tatiana like that.

When someone comes back into Tatiana's life and creates a distraction for her, Shadow isn't pleased. One night jealousy consumes him and he finally decides to give Tatiana want she wants and give in to his desires.

I have been looking forward to this book for what seems like forever so I was really excited but unfortunately I have to say that I am a little disappointed. Maybe I've anticipated this for so long and had such high expectations and that's partly why...I have read Seize Me and Withstanding me and LOVED them both! They were raw, gritty and sexy as hell but I didn't get that in this book. Spears' writing flow has changed and not to say that it isn't good, its just not my preference. Shadowing Me has a much different feel and flow to it than the others do. As much as this is the beginning of Shadow and Tea's story, it had so much to do with everyone else that it didn't really feel like "their" story. I didn't feel the connection and build between them that I was looking for. This is a strictly personal feeling but the sex scenes had me cringing instead of thinking it was hot. I feel like most of the characters that I fell in love with (including Shadow and Tea) have turned into characters I don't even know. The ending doesn't bother me but leaves you looking for the rest of the book. Once you read the notes you will understand why the Spears' did this. I didn't get sucked into this book but glad that I read it non the less. I must tell you that this is the hardest review I have ever written. I REALLY REALLY wanted to love this story but I just didn't. I love the Breakneck MC and will continue to read it. I do hope that with Sniper's Story, the Breakneck MC will return to its former glory.

I usually love Crystal Spears but this book was like a season in Purgatory for me. I waited patiently for Shadow and Tatiana's book. Let me tell you what I did like about it first and then what I didn't like about it.

I liked the angst between the two lead characters. I liked the constant unrest that the club was going through. I liked a certain former character's sister showing up. I liked Winter's pregnancy tirades.

I did not like the too in depth look into Shadow's life as a Sadist. At all. I hated the killing off of yet another character. But back to the Sadism. Shadow wants Tatiana and has for some time. He has fought the attraction because his demons are too much for her. But she was determined to get him and get him she did. Their first scene was too rough for this seasoned reader. No lube? Are you fucking kidding me? I would've killed him on the spot. His need to cause someone not only to hurt but bleed so he can get off? Um, no thanks. His arousal at flayed or split skin due to his actions? Hand me a bucket to vomit in please.

I'm not knocking anyone's choice of kink, really I'm not, but I review books honestly. For me,this novel was in places revolting. Others might love it and to that I say "Great"! I love Crystal Spears' writing and crave her books. This one didn't work for me. I feel it should come with a warning label. Before you throw things at me, let me say that I'm no prude and it isn't just my hate for the BDSM genre that I feel the way I do about this book. It says, after the book, that their story isn't over and she plans another two books for them. I won't be revisiting this couple ever again.

Warning: This book contains extreme acts of BDSM, anything from bondage to using implements on some with the intent to watch them bleed.

I was privileged to get an ARC of shadowing me.
Let me start by saying I am a massive fan of the Breakneck Series, and couldn't wait for Shadow and Tatiana's story.
Shadow has always intrigued me, we all know Shadow has a dark side and in this book you see just how dark that is. (which is darker than I thought)
Tea (Tatiana) in this book is not the young childish girl, running around behind her dad's back. She has grown into a strong woman. The one part of the book where she puts all the MC in their place is one of the best parts of the book. My respect for her grew from there.
Shadow still denies the attraction he feels for Tea, he think she cant handle his lifestyle. She determined to prove him otherwise.
Like all Crystal books, this book is Real, Raw and Gritty!!. Once again Crystal fucks with your head in this book, everyone is getting on with their life's, Brax and Winter having a baby, ZZ and Storm are happy together they are getting to know Mace and he is becoming part of their family. Then BAM. The one part of the book I was so shocked, and SAD, cant believe you done it Crystal, but it wouldn't be a Crystal Spears book if she didn't surprise you when you least expect it.
Shadow and Tea's relationship isn't insta Love because that wouldn't have suited them. Their relationship grows and 1 book wouldn't have been a big enough time frame. When Crystal said she was doing this I was like WTF. But after reading this I understand. They do leave this book on a good note, but their at the beginning of their journey. Cant wait for the next book.
Also in this book Pyro is still struggling to come to terms with losing Lana, a surprise happens, which starts to help Pyro finally heal. I wont give the secret away.
Cant wait for Sniper's book (my fave), plus Smokey intrigues me.
A must read, but WARNING, this book isn't a rainbows and flowers book, its violent, real ,raw dark and AMAZING!!

There were moments where the writing was fairly good, but there were some standout bad moments too. (Like when the author uses the wrong word for what she means)

It was unique in BDSM, but it was also interesting that Shadow was into the really hardcore stuff. But . . . OW!

Unfortunately, I can't really respect a hero who has to make a chick bleed or humiliate her to get it up.

I wish the story had seemed more complete for Shadow and Tatiana because it didn't feel like a complete book, despite the author's note at the end saying that she needed 2 books to complete their story. It didn't feel like a cliffhanger, it just felt like half a book.

I'm actually giving it 2 stars instead of 3 for a couple reasons:

*** SPOILER ALERT ***

1. The scene during church where Winter busts in was ridiculous and not at all believable. I know the author was trying to provide a scene where Tatiana could be proven a real grownup, but it didn't work at all.

2. The entrance of Lana's sister into the series was done well, but the entrance of Winter's sister of "royal blood" was a mess. Not well written, rushed and over-the-top. Besides, if the goal is to avoid scandal, the scandal would be way worse if a woman of "royal blood" were caught hanging out with criminals.

The back and forth between Tatiana and Shadow, I actually liked most of the time. But their relationship barely progressed from "We can never be together because blah blah blah" to "Okay, we had sex and we're exclusive" . . . . THAT'S . . . IT.

I will read the next book in the series and hope more is offered in it.

“It's serious. This thing between us is fucking serious as shit. I wouldn’t risk hurting you with all my bullshit if it wasn’t. You were there. You know exactly how much I tried to resist us getting together.”

I enjoyed reading the Breakneck series but I'm not overly fond of Tatiana and Shadow’s story.
There were a lot of story lines, it was hard to focus on the main characters.

As I read this I was thinking that I may have missed on something.
Here Tatiana and Shadow seemed to be close but I don't remember them interacting much on the first 3 books in the series🤔.
“What the f*** is wrong with you? We can’t even talk now without you insulting me. Shit used not to be this way with us, Tea.”

“We used to be friends. What the f*** happened, Tea?”

I was also hoping for a character development for Tatiana but nope she was still reckless and most of the time over the top. The author was also planning on them having 2 more books so let’s crossed fingers 🤞🏻 on that one.

The overall story was still okay.👍🏻
Next is Piper and Sniper😅

I am so glad to hear that CS is better and I honestly wish her well in the future. I think I can safely say that this will def be my last book to read by this author I don't want to be harsh but I seriously did not like any of her characters in her books I felt no connection and some of the plot lines in her books were too much especially the first one! This book again had characters that I just did not care for they were just bleh and the writing was just bad it felt almost childish at times. I think other readers who like mc books might like it so this negative review is just from my personal point of view. I will not continue with this series.

Not my favorite of the series.

I didn't feel any genuine "heat" between Tatiana and Shadow. His sadistic tendencies are frankly hard for me to understand and that scene where he pierces Tat's nipples with electrodes and shocks her...totally freaked me out.

Story kind of gets left off halfway and the author says that their tale will continue in anther book. Frankly not sure if I'll continue.

Update: The one star is gone.....Thank you.

I cannot believe the person who gave a one star rating to a book that is not even out of the hands of the author yet. Get a life!
The rest of us, who take reviewing and the hard work of writers seriously, will patiently wait until there is actually something to review......

My ACTUAL review......

I had some trouble finding a thread in Shadowing Me. Obviously the story circled around Shadow and Tatiana, and their long simmering attraction. But I felt almost confused at times, not quite sure where to direct my attention as bits and pieces of loose end from the previous novels drifted in and out of focus during the course of this story. I found myself trying to tie the ends together, but never seemed quite successful.

Crystal's writing is a delight to have back after her hiatus and I am thrilled to immerse myself into the Breakneck world again. I wish I would have had time to read the first few books before taking on this one, if only to bring everything back to the forefront. As it was, it took a bit of brain power to engage my memory banks in recalling all the events referred to in Shadowing me.

Shadow and Tatiana have undeniable chemistry together, but their relationship is an almost foregone conclusion. I have a feeling though, we may not have seen the last of them yet.

Despite the fact I was missing a bit of cohesion in this novel, I cannot deny the quality of writing and the enjoyment I get from the "plain language" used in a highly intelligent style, unique to Crystal Spears. Four solid stars for me.
