Award-winning author Margaret Moore actually began her career at the age of eight, when she and a friend concocted stories featuring a lovely, spirited damsel and a handsome, misunderstood thief nicknamed "The Red Sheik." Unknowingly pursuing her destiny, Margaret graduated with distinction from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. During that time, she also became a Leading Wren with the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve, where she learned to use a variety of weapons and had the weepy experience of being tear-gassed. In addition to being a wife and mother of two, she's also been an award-winning public speaker, synchronized swimmer, an archer, and studied fencing and ballroom dancing.
Margaret sold her first historical romance and the premiere book of her Warrior series, A WARRIOR'S HEART, to Harlequin Historicals® in 1991. Since that time, she's written over 25 historical romance novels and novellas. She has also written for Avon Books, as well as a young adult historical romance for HarperCollins Childrens Books. She now writes for Harlequin's new single title imprint, HQN.
Her books have been published in France, Italy, Germany, Great Britain, Australia, Belgium, Switzerland, Brazil, Korea, Japan, Sweden, the Netherlands, Russia, Poland and India.
DNF 25%. Medieval setting. Betrothed since infancy to one another, heroine was about 5 and hero 10 when they last saw one another 15 years ago. He finally returns after his wicked father's death to claim his title and his bride. His father left quite a legacy of fear and debauchery in his wake and heroine unfairly persists on tarring them both with the same brush, based on the hero's supposed 'selfish' and wild behaviour as a 10 year old. Considering she was barely out of nappies at the time, I'm not sure how she can even recall his misdeeds back then. Furthermore, he apparently was already infatuated with her cherubic cheeks in those early years and seeing her again only solidifies his passion for her. Unfortunately, the whole plot tension is based on this flimsy premise , making it hard to overlook the nonsensical past history between them.
3.5 Supero gratamente mis expectativas. Me encantó.
At first I didn't like it because it was too medieval. But as I kept reading it got better, although some scenes could've been greater. When Merrick let out his secret, I was shocked. It was the biggest twist of this book. You should read this.
And this is the part of the series where I felt that Moore hit her stride. I couldn't understand why the series was called "Brothers in Arms" until this book. I figured all the connections would come together at some point, but Merrick, Harry, and Ranulf are really the guys who pledged loyalty to one another, after all. The rest is just loyalty by proxy (marriage).
I liked the Cornish setting of this medieval romance, and it touched on the history of smuggling, even though I generally think of smuggling as a very 18th century thing. While somewhat predictable, the plot was still engaging, and the characters had understandable hangups and fears.
Moore certainly isn't afraid to make her heroes bull-headed a-holes in some of their behaviors and choices, as I have learned, and that's certainly the case here.
In the end, it was an enjoyable story, and I liked the denouement and reunions that happened. It helped foreshadow some of Harry's story as well, which I was interested in following, as well as being a teaser for Ranulf's story.
I came upon this book when looking for one of a.similar title. This is.a.new author for.me. I had to.give this story five stars! it was an awesome read.
I really liked the plot and the characters and their.development through out the book. The main characters were believable and likeable faults and all. The secondary characters were intriguing and at the end of the novel.I wondered what happened in the future to them.and whether we might see Sir Henry's, Lady Beatrice or Lord Ranked's stories.
A fast paced read with humour, romance, intrigue and lots of steam, all the elements of a.GREAT story!
I didn't like the plot or the characters. The book is literally them saying "I love you/I hate you" for 400 pages, I thought they had no personality and were always contradicting themselves. Also I get this book has not been written a long time ago but please if you setting your story in a medieval era you should at least make sense with it.
Une romance qui m'a captivée, plus encore que les premiers tomes. Même si la trame de l'histoire est prévisible à l'avance, j'ai été prise par ma lecture au point d'avoir du mal à la lâcher avant la fin. Très bon moment de lecture.
I haven't read this book in over a decade. But it is, to quote the Fated Mates podcast, a Book that Blooded Me. I read this book when I was...13 maybe? And reread it until it fell to pieces.
I don't usually like cheesy romance novels but this one had me pleasantly surprised. I was shocked that I had found a romance novel with a twist in the plot line and one that had nothing to do with their sex lives.
This book has two stubborn and emotionally stinted, silent people who are in an arranged marriage. Merrick the son of the Lord of Tregellas 'Wicked William' comes home after his father's death to take over his title as Lord of Tregellas. Only Lord Merrick has a secret that could strip him of everything and he is so afraid someone will find out about he pushes everyone away including his two brothers-in-arms and best friends Henry and Ranulf. He even pushes his wife Constance away. Merrick is stubborn, and noble in mind and spirit, he is a very beautiful man.
Constance is a stubborn, out-spoken woman in a time when being an out-spoken woman can get you into trouble. She lives in Tregellas with 'Wicked William' waiting for her betrothed to come back from fighting as a knight. She has lived through 'Wicked' William's mood, his abuse, and his whoring of the villagers wives. So when Merrick finally comes home can anyone blame her for fearing he will be just like him.
Overall it was good. Well written though the characters bug you with their stubbornness to talk about their feelings which leads to both being miserable and not trusting each other. GOOD ROMANCE NOVEL!!
3.5 stars for this one. I enjoyed the relationship between Merrick and Constance. The plotline meandered a bit and I felt there were loose threads in the story that would have made the book a bit more "meatier". I thought there were lots of missed opportunities in the story to make it a truly great book.
For example: SPOILER ALERT!! The conspiracy of the uncles to do away with both Constance and Merrick could have been used far more to "fatten up" the book (if you know what I mean). Instead it was left to 3/4 of the way through for anything really to eventuate in that area and it was fairly mild.
Having said that I thought the premise of Merricks' 15 year secret was portrayed very well. I also loved (most) of the dialogue between M & C. The other characters in the story were great too especially Ranulf. Beatrice was ok but again some of her storyline didn't really go anywhere (we never found out why she was so distraught about M & C's troubles for eg).
Other than my picky-ness bits, it was an enjoyable read. Not a keeper though.
Lady Constance was betrothed to Merrick of Tregallas from the day she was born. She remembers him as a spoiled rotten child and doesn’t want anything to do with him, until she meets him as the dashing knight. Merrick refuses to return to Tregallas due to his dangerous past, but when he catches sight of his future bride, he wants to be a better man. Though his past may come back to haunt him and cost him his Lady before she is even rightfully his.
Margaret Moore writes about a strong, determined woman during a time period that women were supposed to not speak. She adds a subplot full of twists and turns that only add to the romantic storyline. Though this book is the third in a series, it works well as a stand-alone novel. There are many characters to keep up with, but the intrigue keeps readers entertained. Readers will be rooting for Merrick and Constance all the way until the end.

Merrick is about 25 and Constance is 20. I loved this book! Story was great. They let you know soon that Merrick has a secret but you don't find out until the last few chapters and that was great. What made it great was they didn't rub it in there was a secret but weren't telling you. And the secret was awesome and totally didn't see it coming! You of course wish the 2 would talk about things instead of thinking the other knows what you mean. And they never do, and take things all wrong. Merrick was just a hottie, and totally had me lost for him. Even the cover pic was a good idea of what he looked like. Constance was a good female role also, strong and still weak.
Promised to Merrick of Tregellas when she was but a child, Lady Constance was unwilling to wed a man she remembered only as a spoiled boy. Sure he had grown into an arrogant knight, she sought to make herself so unappealing that Merrick would refuse to honor their betrothal. Yet no sooner had this enigmatic, darkly handsome man ridden through the castle gates than she realized he was nothing like the boy she recalled. And very much a man she could love . . . "
By the middle of the book, the hero and heroine have so many people plotting against them...for a minute you wonder how they will prevail. Then, the hero lets out a huge secret toward the end and my mouth dropped open in shock! I really enjoyed the suspense and romance of this book. It will definitely go into my all-time favorites.
It was okay. I think it started better than it ended. I don't generally like plots where the main conflict in the relationship is poor communication. Ugh.
The big twist was interesting, but I figured it out right before the reveal.
Meh. Just okay. I don't know why but I tend not to like medieval romances.
I like the story. The only thing that brings my rating down is that the love scene was to graphic for me. I like the steam but I don't want all the explicit details. I love the twist at the end with the brothers being switched. For the most part this book is a great read.
Fun and entertaining read. I liked both the characters. The plot was good, though more could have been done to bring it out. One I will keep for a future reread.
