When it comes to magic, more isn’t always merrier.

Keep letting the Gryphons blackmail her? Or join a goblin for tea? Choices, choices.

Furious at the Gryphons’ betrayal, former vigilante Jessica Moore is determined to cut the law enforcement agency from her life—and hopes doing so will solidify her rocky relationship with Lucen.

When a friend’s soul is sucked dry by a goblin, Jess finds it’s not so easy to let go of her past. Unwilling to let down someone who needs help, she puts aside her anger to work with the Gryphons and solve the case.

A stolen soul isn’t her only problem. Boston’s goblin leader is calling in the debt Jess owes. To plug the holes in both her personal and professional dam, Jess must unearth information about a magic she never knew existed, all the while testing Lucen’s patience and stirring the wrath of old enemies.

What she discovers will reveal the terrifying truth behind the Gryphons’ treachery, and force her to choose where her loyalty—and her heart—truly lie.

Warning: Secrets will be revealed, friendships will be tested, and old enemies will pick fights. On the bright side, there are still naked satyrs for a distraction between battles.

Finally banter! That’s what was missing from this series!

Also Jessica doesn’t act stupidly and she’s nicer!

The mystery’s good too! (Still a little sex, but Satyrs are essentially succubus, so that’s to be expected.)

After that sequel I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue this series, but I’m glad I did. I rate this one 8/10!

I love how in each book we find out more about the world and the preds. It adds another layer of fantasy and mystery. (and since the world is the best part, it’s nice to keep getting more.)

Jess decided she was going to have nothing to do with the Gryphons any more, regardless of their blackmail, not after what she learned about her childhood

That’s until her best friend Steph’s cousin is turned into a ghoul by the Goblin who owns his soul. How can she refuse to be involved in the investigation and turn her back on her friend?

Of course, going back to the Gryphons isn’t helping her rocky relationship with her satyr boyfriend, Lucen, who wants her to accept the multiple sex partners that are necessary for satyrs. And that’s before she tackles her own conflicted feelings about her own Pred heritage.

Looming over all of this, several prophecies are aligning – and the end of the world may be nigh.

This book is moving the story to a whole new level – in some ways it’s a transition book; but usually that would mean a weaker novel but that’s far from the case here. It feels like Jess has reached the end of her journey of self-discovery and all the conflict there and it has been done excellently. I’ve loved every step of that.

On top of that we have an introduction of the next stage of the meta-plot – the ominous prophecies we’ve been hearing for a while. We can see this looming, it has been introduced and the series has some excellent deduction

And, among that, we have a decent mystery that is both personal to Jess and relevant to the meta-plot but still stands up sufficiently on its own to make sure the book isn’t all about setting up the next book. We have an investigation, a clear book-specific story arc as well.

All three of these elements are really well balanced, really well paced and work extremely well together – it made the book fun to read while still serving up plenty of hooks for the fourth book.

On top of all this, as I said in the previous books, the world building of this series – the Preds and their feeding on different emotions, their forming of circles of addicts – is really original. I love reading something so very different from everything else I’ve read

The cornerstone of this book is Jess’s identity issues and they’re complex and really well done, especially how it relates to the greater world building. Jess was raised as a human, raised, like most people, to hate and fear Preds and even aspired to join the Gryphons, a kind of magical police force that exists to control and, at one time, war against the Pred races. But she has learned that, no, she isn’t cursed, she’s a pred. She’s a kind of satyr. And she’s a satyr because a segment of the Gryphons experimented on her and others while they were children – which has definitely flipped the script she’d always lived by as to who the good and bad guys are.

But it’s not just simplistically flipping the story over. After all, the Preds ARE predatory, by definition they’re predatory, they do prey on people, they do addict people, they do use people and a lot of people suffer because of their supernatural hunger. But nor are they entirely monstrous as we see their society does have rules (albeit not always closely adhered to) and many Preds do their best to cause minimal damage while feeding hungers they cannot avoid (at the same time, the choice to become a Pred is generally that – a choice – so even one who is very moral and kind with their addicts can’t be considered completely free from blame). And, of course, Jess knows several Preds who seem to be good people – on top of that it’s rightly pointed out to her that Jess is a Pred who avoids many of the downsides of being a Pred since she isn’t physically identifiable as one (satyrs have horns) and she doesn’t need addicts; in some ways judgement from her comes from a position of great advantage compared to her fellows. And flipping back to the Gryphons, we’re equally clear that they’re not all brutal fanatics and they do have an important role to play in maintaining order and protecting people and she isn’t able to write off the organisation because of the inexcusable actions of one.

I am so glad I rediscovered this series from the first time I read it. This is such a fun, action-packed urban fantasy with a little romance thrown in. Jess is really growing as a character, not that she was bad before, and events in this book just got serious. We find out some interesting information in this latest which amps up the tension, and the end just left me wanting more. This was probably the best book in the series, and I want the next one stat. Well-written, interesting universe, great characters. What more could you ask for? Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I really enjoyed this book.

The world has a complex world building reminiscent of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files but with a delightfully female focus.

The first few chapters also provide enough bridge material that I was was able to jump right into series without having read the other books.

The MC had a take charge attitude that made her a fantastic protagonist to follow but I also enjoyed how the author started with a universal milestone the MC moving into her first apartment. The MC ruminating on suddenly finding the quiet of living alone weird when she had previously been counting down the days when she you have her own living space.

I really, really enjoyed how the author used the magical system of the world to not just add adventure and excitement but to explore complex themes.

The thematic resonance of as biology versus personality was a particular standout. With the main character felling ashamed of her ability to draw energy from the misery of humans. Or her personal desire for monogamy crashing with her partners magical needs as a Satyr.

I also enjoyed the exploration friendship versus obligation, our tendency to overgenralize the actions of a few individuals to find them representing their entire tribe, and our tendency to purposely look over the most disadvantaged in society. These themes added intellectual depth to the paranormal action and adventure but never came across as preachy.

I will probably check out the other book in the series because I want to spend more time in Shadowtown.

I'm not going to regurgitate another plot summary, I'm just going to tell you what I loved and what was meh, in my opinion.

I love this author. I'm just gonna put it right out there. All of the books I've read in this series thus far have been magic. Her characters stay true, but don't stagnate, there's not magical cures that pop up randomly to wrap up plots, and most of all, her storytelling is vivid, and engrossing.

Jess is accepting who she is, sometimes after she's faced with logic and sometimes after she's pushed into, but that's reality for ya. Her bff had a realistic reaction when faced with interesting spoilery type news. I could go on but then you wouldn't need to read the book.

I started this book when I first received it and then had a medical emergency and it's taken me forever to get back to it, but as soon as I could pick it back up, I read it in one sitting, I just can't ever seem to find a good place to stop. There are so many people/preds with so many motivations.

On to the mehs, in 'theory' I really like Lucen and Jess. When they are a couple and moving the story along it works really well, but the internal monologue Jess had running, for what seemed like eternity, over nonsense, was the kind of stuff that requires coffee to get through. I could've lived without all of that.
My last meh, I feel like a cliff was hung, Ahhhh!

This book took some time to get cooking, what with Jess being very difficult and unable to accept (shock!) what she is (still…). Once we got moving, though, things got so much better (and sexier!).

Jess may have come to terms with her new weirdo status while with the other “weirdos” out there, but she is still very actively hiding herself from her bestie. She is also fighting her true nature that wants to devour her boyfriend’s BFF. On a seemingly normal night out at a book signing of her bestie’s cousin’s book, said cousin ends up dropping dead from too rapid a pull from the predator that addicted him (SURPRISE!). This unfortunately puts Jess in a situation where she wants to be assigned to help the Gryphons, even after finding out their past experimentation.

So, the larger story here? Well, the world is probably ending, and there have been oodles of visions about it and Jess. Sucks, right? Well, she dives in head first and is also somehow managing her own “coming out” in the crappiest yet sexiest of ways. While we get a bunch of steps forward for Jess and, ya know, the whole end of days thing, it takes a lot of doing to get Jess to accept herself the way we all desperately want her to. Each book gives more growth, so here’s hoping for even more in the next one!

I got this book as part of the early reviewers program and in order to give it a fair review of course I had to read books 1&2. before 3! Let me start by saying books 1 and 2 are largely world and character building. However book three is different.

This book 3, Misery Loves Company, is by far better than the first two. Jess the main character sees a large amount of character growth and overall feels less stagnant, like she is preparing to enter her chrysalis and emerge a bada** butterfly. I am slightly disappointed that there is no growth for her love interest, he's the same as he was when he first became the love interest. I cant decide if they should stay together.

As for the plot, you can telling book 3 everything in the first two books has been leading up to this and things are about to come to a grand end- but not in this book thankfully! We will get a well thought out ending when it does come.

Lastly the spice rating, because the character skills revolve around lust and pheromones there's a few spicy sceens however overall it's fairly mild. I'd say 2/5 for spice.

This was an enjoyable read. It is book three and I think having the back stories will be useful although not entirely necessary.

Jess looks human and passes as human but has special abilities that allow her to manipulate the emotions of others. We meet Jess a she is trying to adjust to what she has learnt about her powers and herself. Her relationship with her partner, Lucen, is changing and she is struggling with her attraction to his best friend Devon. Lucen, as a Satyr, is perfectly happy for her to explore that attraction physically. Throw in preds stealing people’s souls and turning them into ghouls and a prediction that the apocalypse is coming and you have quite the page turner.

I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Enjoyable fantasy book. Jess, a strong female fantasy lead, is drawn back into a life she wants nothing to do with to help her friend, and she also has past commitments which will give her grief as she fulfils them. From this comes a fast paced well written fantasy book. This is the third book in a series but can be read as a stand alone; however, I think I would have felt more invested if I had read the previous books. Thank you to City Owl Press and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.

I have read book 1 and 2, which are more set up but this one i found was better, we learn more of the world, add a touch of mystery, with a few spicy scenes.

Jess is a strong female lead in the paranormal romance /fantasy genre.

The book has a lot of action, danger, prophecies with the pacing of the story is good so you are drawn in. I am actually looking forward to seeing where the story goes next.

A big thank you to NetGalley and City Owl Press for the eARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is part of a series, and I personally think they should be read in order. I think it would be difficult to pick this book up and read it without being confused if you hadn't read the others. I really like Jess, I feel bad that she is put in such awkward positions. Interesting storyline and plot. Jess can certainly adapt better than I could. 4 stars

I was so much happier with this book than the last. Though she said she wasn’t going to work with the gryphons, anymore- she’s pulled back in. How could she refuse to help her friend? This installment brought us more fun conversations, and a lot more into the end of the world prophecy.

A great continuation of this series. The main character continues to grow, the plot continues to be a fun fast paced adventure. I can't wait to see what they all get up to in the next one since this one feels even more like we are starting to learn what the BIG plot is for this series.

Imagine going to a book signing & reading of one of your favorite Thriller authors, finding out he's an addict and then seeing his soul drained right before your eyes. Since said author also happens to be your bestie's family you have no choice but to go back to work for that vile law enforcement agency you actually quit recently in order to find out what happened and if the writer's soul can be restored.

It's the plot of Misery Loves Company and the mystery that'll be the umbrella for many things we needed to learn in this title in order to get to book 4.

This book is a bit of an interlude. While it certainly is a part of the series, with both its own plot and unravelling more and more of the entire, continuous story, it's missing the excitement and tension that made the first two books, and particularly the second, so great.
This book is necessary though - it gives us yet again more insight into the Pred & Gryphon world, the reasons why Jess was -for lack of a better word-transformed against her will, and that someone has some rather nefarious plans that will see Jessica smack dab in the middle of it. To put it in Mace-Head's words -yup he's back - "We'll be seeing you girly. Stay alive”. We're heading towards one giant explosive ending, people.

But, that also leaves us with a book that isn't as fast paced. That had me less "edge of my seat” and more “ Oooh so that is what we are going to see + where the hell is this going?! “ exclamations in my head. As many questions Misery Loves Company answers, it does throw as many into the air. But that's a good thing in this case, because it keeps one eager to read more.

I'm not saying in any way that Misery Loves Company was a bad book. On the contrary: it was a good one and quality wise comparable to the first in many ways. I really, really liked #2 and that was a tough act to follow. Particularly because installment 3 simply isn't the type of book that has major battles, nor sees Jess in constant danger from a deranged killer while trying to solve a murder case f.e. No, all that is the fun stuff from the previous titles.

However, plenty happens in book 3, and ofcourse Jessica can't suddenly stroll around Shadowtown without a care in the world. Duh! Obviously she'll have a scary life, being threatened here and there. The reasons the author refrained from too many battles, is probably because the unravelling of Olaf's visions, the prophecy Tom Kassim keeps pushing under Jess' nose, is the crux of Misery Loves Company . Not to mention Jessica's acceptance of her true self and what that entails for her friendships and her relationship with Lucen.

In other words: plenty happens. It's just different.

If you've perhaps wondered about my L.K. Hamilton reference in my review of book 2 Dirty Little Misery I'll say just one thing: the title of book 3 can be construed as a hint and I'm really and truly hoping - without saying too much - Martin leaves it at this particular choice. Pretty please. As said before: with Jess having little to no knowledge about her own capabilities, nor her magic there could be a gazillion interesting options revolving around these two lovebirds, or Satyrs, to have them in a happily ever after without resorting to *that* trope.

And that's basically all I have to say about Misery Loves Company: the wish that it'll remain to the currently set and hinted about 'Company', not more; the fact it's a must-read if you're hooked on the Ms Misery series; and while a bit less violent and different, a book that's seriously enjoyable !

4 stars .

Misery Loves Company is the third book in the Miss Misery series and I really enjoyed it.
At the end of book two we saw Jess walking away from the Gryphons after finding out how they had betrayed her & she’s sort of stuck on what to do next…
That is until her best friend’s cousin and famous writer has his soul sucked straight out of him at a book signing – right in front of Jess and Steph. Everyone is horrified, it is illegal for a Pred to do this and so publically too and when Steph tells her she is the only one she trusts to find out what happened….Jess is pulled into the Gryphons clutches again but it also means she can do a little delving of her own.
That’s not the only problems she is having lately; one involves a certain favour owed to the Goblin Dom who is about to call it in and the other is her relationship with Lucen and his need to have sex with his addicts, as you can imagine Jess is still not down with that and can’t see a way that she can live with it…. Will this mean the end of her relationship with the sexy satyr?
I really enjoyed this book, as I have the others. There are always multiple threads of story weaved together that come together in the end and this is no exception, so be prepared for more secrets, more death, plenty of action in and out of the bedroom plus Lucen & Devon… what more could you want? Jess is making progress with her pred status, she is accepting of some things but not others, I think she will always think like a human but be more sympathetic towards preds because she has a foot in both worlds and she is perfect to be some sort of liaison between the two which could prevent conflict. I like that she is still struggling with the pred/addict relationship because as a reader – I still do, yes I understand it but I don’t really like it because it goes against my nature I suppose and Jess is having similar thoughts. I’m into her relationship with Lucen but really wish she could be enough for him somehow. The involvement of Devon in this could be seen coming and yes, I like him but I’m a bit dubious about where it’s all headed romance wise.
The story has good progression, the preds seem to be on the precipice of war and are just waiting for a catalyst. We have more details of a prophecy involving Jess and we know how much I love those, it could be easily brushed off if it wasn’t coming from multiple sources and Jess begins to learn more about this here – it definitely had my curiosity going and I can’t wait to see it all unfold. It seems like all sides are looking for something because they know what’s around the corner for them, there’s an atmosphere of imminent conflict and it seems everyone is preparing by gathering information and allies so definitely precarious times for them all. As always with a good UF there is a mystery to be solved and that was another good thread to the plot, we got to know a few more people better through the investigation and a good few secrets are revealed so that when it all comes together – we get another thrilling read in this series and I’ll always be looking out for more from this author.

Review from jeannie zelos book reviews
Genre: fantasy/paranormal romance
Book three in the series, and while I missed book one I loved book two and was keen to read the next instalment.
I wasn’t disappointed. Once again Jess is plunged into danger and mayhem, and really none of it down to her actions. Seems she gets stuck in the rock and hard place scenario whatever she does, and whichever route she takes to get out of it is going to upset someone. I love Jess, she’s a tough girl, has her problems from a troubled past but she doesn’t wallow,  just gets on with life, shaping her actions according to her own sense of morality, not some arbitrary rules. She’s the best type of female lead, intelligent, sexy, loyal to her friends and with a sense of morality.  Lucen, her Satyr lover, is a great guy too – he’s waited patiently for ten years for Jess to accept him, knowing she’s worth the wait. Of course him being a Satyr is a problem – he has to have sex with others to stay alive, and Jess finds that hard to accept however much he tells her its just physical, and that she has the emotional part of him. He’s encouraging her to have sex with others to see if she can understand what he means...Like Jess I’d find it hard too, understanding its not a choice for him but still...that’s human thinking though and as he tells Jess she needs to accept what she is. I really like Lucen, he’s also loyal to his people and it’s clear he loves Jess, but struggles on how to get her to understand him. She wants to know more about his past but he deflects her every time and it makes her wonder why.
Having left the Gryphons at the end of the last book, Jess now needs to get back in to help her best friend, whose cousin has had his soul taken. As it happens she’s there when the event occurs, and the Gryphon who attends straight after is one she knows, and she asks for Jess’ help...Lucen isn’t happy though – he knows how much they’ve upset Jess in the past, and finds it hard that she still wants to work with them, even if it is to help a friend. There’s someone keen for Jess to take Lucen’s suggestion about other lovers seriously, and he’s trying to seduce Jess every time they meet. Her problem is that she’s strongly attracted to him....but her mind says she should only have one lover.
Then the Goblin leader calls in her favour, and the leader of the Satyrs makes a surprising suggestion to Jess. Throw in lots of action, magic, soul sucking and danger, prophecies and visions, yet more secrets being revealed, and the joining together of some unusual allies, and again its a packed read.
Stars: Five, another terrific read.

Jess is finding out it’s not so easy to let go of her past as she discovers the terrifying truth behind the Gryphons’ treachery in this riveting urban fantasy romance.

After the Gryphon’s betrayal, Jess wants nothing else to do with the law enforcement agency but circumstances puts her right back in the thick of things as she discovers the nefarious plots of the sylphs that include sucking souls dry. The reader can’t help but get caught up in all the intrigue and plotting of the different groups involved in the story as each has their own agenda and refuses to work together. This keeps Jess and the readers hopping from one agenda to the next ensuring there is never a dull moment. The characters continue to grab the reader’s attention from the very beginning and ensure that the readers come back for more.

The steady pace and smooth flowing plot does have a couple of slow scenes but it is full of intrigue and imparts a lot of information and in depth thoughts from Jess that is vital to the story and what comes next. Jess’s life is full of excitement and danger with everything that happens around her and impacts her personal life as she struggles with lots of personal strife. Then there is her love life which continues be complicated by the fact that even though her attraction to Lucen burns hot with frequent scorching hot sex scenes, she burns with desire for Devon which is encouraged by Lucen. Wow, twos sexy satyr hunks – I want some of that.

I have to say that the story reveals lots of secrets and there is lots of spine tingling adrenaline rushes to be had throughout the story along with surprising twists but what comes next promises to be even more interesting and thrilling so I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book.

Review can also be found here.

This is one of my favorite series. I have LOVED all three books but so far I think this one is by far my favorite. I really love the world that Martin has built and I love, love the characters, good and bad, I love them all.

Jess is definitely one of my favorites. She has gone through some amazing characters growth since the beginning of the book and I really enjoy when you can look back and she just how much a character has changed and grown. Another favorite is Lucen. Lucen is a satyr so of course he is charming but he’s also caring and thoughtful. And he’s hot and has a dirty mouth on him. *wink wink* Then there is Devon, I have to say out of the guys he is my favorite. Until this book it had been Lucen but Devon has that bad boy vibe going on and I dig it.

Misery Loves Company is a good urban fantasy with a great mix of romance. There is also great friendships, something I think we definitely need to see more of in books. Sex, there is also sex, hints at a future poly relationship, and a transgender character, who is the best friend of Jess. And last but not least the badass Dom of the satyrs is a black woman. This is definitely one of the more diverse urban fantasies I have seen and a sure read for fans of the genre.

I received an ARC of this book from the author. This in no way affected my review.

Sylphs, satyrs, and goblins? Oh my! Boston will never be the same when these predators are done. The author has created a fantastical world where humans and preds uneasily co-exist, and Jess is caught in between. Born human but experimented on at an early age, she is a satyr who doesn't need to feed on human motions to survive. A war is brewing, and Jess must get the preds to cooperate with one another to avert an apocalypse.
