She's done it again! Paula has given us another book that I got lost in and had a hard time putting down! It was another fabulous blend of history, family and romance. I really loved the chemistry and respect between Abigail and Daniel.
Abigail is another fierce, fabulous female character. I love that she wants to be chief one day! Her desire to protect her clan and keep her mother safe in spite of what her father wants was fantastic! She showed with that alone why she should be chief. I absolutely adored her relationship with Rob. I have a very soft spot for father/daughter relationships, especially within this series. These rough highlanders are wrapped around their daughter's fingers! Seeing Abigail with Callum was a delightful treat as well!
Daniel is wonderful. Oh,I like him a lot! He is a true and noble knight, much like Tristan before him. I loved his chivalrous nature and the way he put the needs of his cherished friend, the queen, above his own. It takes a true gentleman to do that. He has always fought for what he believes in and to protect his queen and there is no faulting him for that. I highly enjoyed his relationship with Anne. You could see the motherly affection she had for him,but there was deep friendship as the base. It was interesting watching him come to terms with his true heritage and what it meant for him.
Abigail and Daniel were fabulous right from the start. That initial attraction mixed with an instinctive dislike that didn't last too long. Their chemistry was palpable and their struggles and concerns were very valid and very real. But as always, love won out in the end. I loved watching them come to know one another, to trust each other and begin to fall. The mutual respect and admiration was a great foundation in helping them overcome the obstacles between them. One of my favorite things was watching Daniel admit to himself what he felt for her and how deeply he was feeling it. Abigail was very open in her feelings but it was Daniel that really got my heart racing when he came to terms with his. I adored the way he tried to protect her from Charlotte, from enemies and even from himself. But Abigail is so fierce he just didn't stand a chance!! They are a couple I can't wait to see more from in the future.
As for the end, how utterly charming and perfect! I laughed and I loved!! Very excited for Malcom's story to come!

I have enjoyed Ms. Quinn’s Highland romances before and this book is another great addition to the MacGregor saga. There is enough intrigue, secrets and romance to satisfy all.
Abigail MacGregor is the daughter of the clan chief, a strong woman who will be chief herself one day. Her father Robert MacGregor, is married to Davina, a woman who has a secret that many would kill for, she is the first born daughter of a King. She never wanted to rule, so kept hidden away in the Highlands, but now her sister, Queen Anne has found her and requests her attendance. Davina is recovering from an illness, not to mention that Robert is worried about her safety, so Abigail insists she goes instead.
Daniel Marlow is a captain in the Queen’s guard, a man with a reputation that precedes him as a great warrior. He is a favorite of the Queen and when she needs someone she trusts to bring Abigail from her home, she asks Daniel to go. He is reluctant to protect a Highlander, someone he believes he can’t trust but goes because the Queen has asked him. As Abigail and Daniel travel they encounter several dangerous situations that bring them closer together but they come from different backgrounds and are considered enemies, so they know nothing could ever come of their relationship.
This is another delightful historical romance that blend historic fact and fiction into a sweeping saga that takes the reader on a trip to another time and place.
Abigail is very likeable, she is a strong independent woman with plans to lead her clan one day. Her family means everything to her and she steps in when she feels they are threatened. Although she has spent her life in the Highlands, she is willing to take her mother’s place to visit the Queen in a possible hostile environment.
Daniel is equally devoted to the Queen, he will do anything to protect her and does her bidding whether it be in war or to bring a young woman to England. When he meets Abigail, he reminds himself frequently that that she is the enemy, yet she captivates him from the beginning. However, the closer they become the more he realizes they could never be together as their worlds are so different. When lies and secrets come out and danger threatens not only Abigail but also the Queen, Daniel is torn and is angry and hurt by what he finds out and feels betrayed. I really felt for him, the two women who he feels the closest to each held on to secrets that affected him.
The pace of the story is fast, it grabs you from the beginning and does not let you go. Secondary characters are important to the story, I enjoyed how the MacGregor family is prevalent throughout the book, Abigail’s father helps save the day several times as he protect his daughter. I also like the Queen, she is a leader of England, yet a lonely woman that truly loves Daniel like a son. There were several other clans in the picture and I was a bit confused on whose side everyone’s loyalties lied but eventually the truth came out. This is the second book in this series, but the author keeps the reader informed so it can easily be read as a standalone. All in all a wonderful story filled with intrigued, spying and danger along with a romance that is very satisfying.

3,75 - Questa serie di Paula Quinn ha il pregio di presentare storie autonome tra loro, per cui i volumi si possono leggere anche a salti e apprezzare - ugualmente - a salti.
Il piccolo grande problema è che tutte le vicende sono strettamente legate al contesto storico (che l'autrice fornisce come scontato, per cui la lettrice non proprio sul pezzo fa un po' fatica ad orientarsi e deve inseguire gli eroi cercando al contempo qualche punto di riferimento) e presentano aggiunte "inventate" che vanno bellamente a mischiarsi con il vero, creando un mix magari gradevole, di certo parecchio confuso.
Dico ciò, poiché anche il gradimento di questo terzo romanzo migliora, a mio avviso, se si viene muniti delle giuste coordinate (non fornite, ahimè, dalla Quinn).
Ci troviamo poco dopo l'Atto di Unione (1 maggio 1707), quando Inghilterra e Scozia si fusero in un solo regno, la Gran Bretagna, evento che divise profondamente anche i clan delle Highlands. Sul trono siede Anna Stuart, protestante, da poco vedova del marito Giorgio, principe di Danimarca, mentre la fazione scozzese giacobita (e cattolica) è ferocemente perseguitata dagli inglesi.
Questa è storia vera, in effetti.
E veniamo a quanto immaginato: sull'isola di Skye si è rifugiato e isolato il clan MacGregor, custode di un notevole segreto, in quanto tra i membri si cela un'ulteriore erede Stuart, potenziale minaccia per la corona. Figuriamoci il terrore quando proprio la regina invia una convocazione ufficiale.
La giovane Abigail decide di presentarsi a nome del clan, per evitare la condanna di tutti, e viene presa in consegna dal generale Marlow e dai suoi soldati.
I due sono - con tutta evidenza - antagonisti: lei è fedele alla propria gente, lui è fiero di aver ucciso ben 800 highlander nemici. E, tuttavia, il viaggio li porterà ad affrontare insieme vari pericoli, portandoli a far fronte comune e a salvarsi reciprocamente la vita.
Mi è piaciuto di più Daniel, che si presenta da subito con referenze da soldato sanguinario e mantiene quasi sino alla fine l'approccio spocchioso/arrogante/diffidente; infatti, se in una scena pare ammorbidirsi, subito dopo torna a farsi sospettoso, visto anche il clima violento in cui si muove. Abigail, d'altro canto, inizia bene, con i suoi propositi e la propria determinazione, ma non è ancora partita che già cade nel loop "ma quanto è cattivo/ma quanto è figo" e prontamente scivola nella contemplazione adorante.
Diciamo un quasi 4 stelline, sì per l'azione, ni per la storia d'amore.
Curiosità: nella storia vera, la regina morirà poco dopo e a lei subentrerà Giorgio I degli Hannover, che continuerà la lotta contro il Pretendente, altro erede Stuart escluso dal trono.

The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor is the third book in The MacGregors: The Highland Heirs
series by Paula Quinn. Although it's part of a series, the book is easily read as a stand alone one.
Abigail MacGregor is the daughter to the true heir to the throne of England. Her mother, Davina, is the eldest daughter of the king, and therefore she should be on the throne rather than her Anne. BUT most of the world doesn't know about Davina which is just how she likes it as she is more than happy married to her highlander and living far from the palace and royal life. It comes to the attention of Anne that Davina is alive and she writes to her demanding that she attend her at the palace. Not sure if it would be a trap so that Anne could kill her and any threat to her throne, the MacGregors as a whole decide that Davina must not travel. She has also been terribly unwell and isn't fit for the journey anyway. Abigail wanting to prevent the Queen's army attacking her clan because of her mother not attending Anne, decides to journey in her stead. She wants to convince Anne, that her mother has no desire to take on the throne, and as a Catholic she couldn't even if she did want to. The Queen is happy to accept Abigail's offer and sends her best man to escort her to her as quickly as possible.
General Daniel Marlow is head of the few men that travel to fetch Abigail. He is the Queen's best man and is known for being the Jacobite Slayer. Unfortunately Abigail and her family are Jacobites, so she despises him on first site, as he despises her and her family for what he sees as their betrayal to the Queen. He doesn't know that Abigail is the Queen's niece. He just knows he has to do his job and make sure she reaches Anne safely.
During the journey which is filled with all sorts of trials, Daniel and Abigail admit if only to themselves, that they are fascinated with each other, and there is some strong sexual attraction there that they both won't give into because of her being a Jacobite, and him being the slayer. The story that follows is not only one where we learn of the increasing feelings between the couple, but there is also treachery afoot, plans for Anne's death, Daniel's death, plans for abducting Abigail, and all sorts of secrets, not least being Daniel's true parentage! It really is an exciting story with a lot going on. It was an intriguing read, never boring, and the passionate scenes between our hero and heroine are beautifully written! There are twists galore in this book and it really made it a pleasure to read. Paula Quinn is quickly becoming a favourite author of mine and I fully recommend this book.

Before I say anything else about this book, I just want to state, emphatically, for the record, that I finished reading this a couple of days ago and I'M STILL THINKING ABOUT IT. This is the first book I have read by Quinn, but now I am making it a point to add all of her other titles to my To-Be-Read (TBR) pile.
When I first started reading this book I didn't know how I felt about Abigail. Perhaps it's my lack of knowledge about the customs and traditions of Jacobite-era highlanders but I hadn't thought that a woman could become the clan's chief. That Abby states often that is her plan, at first I thought she was being really naive and that she'd be one of those characters who lives in a bubble of her own that is so far removed from reality that you don't know where she actually is. Again, that could be my own naivety about the era, but it just read really ... young ... to me. In fact, I spent the first several chapters wondering how old Abby was. Sometimes she sounded like a 14 year old, and other times she was a smart woman in full control of her mind and the direction her life was taking her. When she was that character, I was fully enthralled.

• A Royal Summons - The MacGregors, still proscribed by England, receive word from Her Royal Highness. Davina MacGregor is to come to St. James Palace for a "meet & greet"
• The General - Daniel Marlow, Queen Anne's highest ranking officer and closest person to her heart. Known as the Jacobite Killer, he was taxed with the job of escorting Abigail MacGregor from the Highlands of Scotland to the palace. He didn't really want to go for her until the night before he actually left...
• The Jacobite Lass - Second born of the Laird, but determined to be the next Laird of the Clan MacGregor. Abigail is as stubborn as her father, if not more so. When the summons comes, the decision is final, at least in her mind. She is going in her mother's place. Period.
• The Queen - Lonely, untrusting, failing health. Anne has...had one friend, Charlotte. She has one man she trusts, Daniel. He is like a son to her. Her cousin Richard Montagu...she has to be able to trust him, he's family, even though she doesn't like him much.
• The Bit...errr, the mean one ;-) - Charlotte Adler, once a close friend and confidant to the Queen, now? Not so much. The snake-in-the-grass likes to make it appear as though nothing has changed, but really almost anyone could see that she has an allegiance to herself only.
• The Villain - Richard Montagu...is he really the villain? He really is...or is he? I guess you'll have to read the book to find out ;-)
• A murder, a kidnapping and assassination attempt - I'll leave that to you to figure out who was murdered, kidnapped and assassinated...or attempted!
• The MacGregors - They are out in force, from Callum on down to Adam! I believe nothing else needs to be said on that subject. *swoon*
• Tristan - My Knight In Shining Armor. I have missed him so much, and he plays such a pivotal part. I admit, I re-read his parts probably 3 or 4 times just so I could spend more time with him.
• Colin - My knees go weak when I even think about this man (I know, you probably think he is just a character in a book...he isn't to me! He is a man who lived in the 1700's in Scotland...but I digress) Colin played a very important roll too. Isn't it amazing that my two very favorite characters would play such important roles in this book? I myself am over the moon.
• Ill-fated Romance - The Jacobite Killer and the Jacobite Lass...oh, we know they shouldn't be together, they are polar opposites with such undeniable chemistry from the moment their eyes meet. When Paula Quinn works her literary magic on these two, amazing things happen and we as readers reap the benefits. She weaves an intricate story, adding history with fiction, inviting us in, and I'll be honest, I don't want to leave. If ever there was a book to purchase, this is it. The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor will be one of those books I will read over and over. I adore Paula's protective heroes, I love her strong and independent heroines and I love it when they clash and love. Thank you Paula for sharing your wonderful mind with us.

I truly enjoyed this story. Both Abigail and Daniel were so likeable and they show that the old saying, “opposites attract” is very true. These two could not be more different but their attraction to each other burns hot pretty much from the moment they meet. Then as trouble after trouble is thrown at them they just become closer. I love how even though they are attracted to each other their romance is real. They fight and argue a lot but they cannot stay away from each other, even though they lead very different lives.
I love Abigail. She is brave, loyal, and smart. She will do whatever she has to to protect her family even if it means putting her own life on the line. She also knows what she wants and that is to be her clan’s chief, even after meeting and falling in love with Daniel. Plus no matter what danger she finds herself in she doesn’t just give up or cower in fear, instead she fights.
Daniel is many girls’ dream guy. All of the women at court fawn all over him, but from a distance. He is the brooding type and even though he does not want her, he has been labeled as belonging to Lady Charlotte. Daniel refuses to have any lovers because in the past bad things have happened to the poor women who he was with. Unfortunately without proof he cannot stop Lady Charlotte. This makes loving Abigail a hazard to her and is one reason he tries so hard to deny his feeling.
I have to say though my favorite character was the Queen. At first I felt so bad for her. She lost everyone she loved besides Daniel. To top it off everyone is out to betray her, except for Daniel. That would be a hard life to live. Even so as the story progresses we get to see the Queen liven up and start to enjoy life. I feel her character grew as much as Daniel and Abigail did.
I recommend this story to lovers of historical romances. The relationship between Abigail and Daniel will keep you reading to see if they will put aside their differences to be together.

The turbulent history of Scotland remains one of the few historical sub genres that gets written, aside from the English Regency Era, it seems that the only other time in history we get to read about is the Scottish Highlands and their forever struggle for freedom. Just like in the Regency period books, there are outstanding ones and ones that are less so. Most of course fall somewhere in between.
Paula Quinn writes an interesting concept.. a question that could possibly be true. I mean anything is possible and to quote my favorite line from Angels in the Outfield, "It could happen". Her premise? A young woman, truly a princess, was secreted away from the England and raised in a convent. Sort of a way of hedging their bets. One daughter would remain protestant and one would be raised catholic, just in case. I don't understand why they would remove the older child to be raised in obscurity, I mean wouldn't she be the rightful heir to the throne? Well yes and that of course remains the catch.
After years of living in gleeful obscurity, married joyfully to her highland chief, the queen calls for her. Demanding her presence at court. Of course she is ailing and can't go so her daughter goes in her stead. No one knows why the queen is calling for a little known daughter of the highlands but she did so she must be protected.
So a defiant daughter willfully takes her mother's place and is handed off to the scourge of Scotland. A Man known for his killing of Scots.. and oh yeah the bastard child of the Prince Consort. Hmmmmm, of course he just learns this part.
Of course there are plots aplenty. Plots made by the borderland Scots, those made in the Queen's court and a few others. Ms Quinn could have gotten lost with all the subterfuge but instead she managed to keep it rather realistic. Or rather realistic to what went on then. Probably still does in the power circles.
The main characters, Abigail MacGregor and General Daniel Marlow are in some ways the only innocent characters in this book. And even then Abigail has some secrets she can't tell Daniel.
I haven't yet decided if I liked this book. But it made me think, it's still making me think so I have to give it four stars. It's well written, creatively thought out and brings both Scotland and England's troubled times into play. So Ms. Quinn wins huge points for that.
I think you have to read this book just to decide if you like it or not? I know it made me feel a little ignorant as this was a time in England's history that I am not as familiar with. Consequently I couldn't smirk at any historical inaccuracies, yes I am that big of a snob. All said and done? It's a decent book but you have to decide for yourself whether it's worth the read.

With lovely romance and political secrets, The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor was a lovely historical romance. With betrayals and secrets, it kept things interesting and I really liked it.
Abby was a wonderful heroine. Strong-willed and smart, she knew when it was time to fight and when it was better to wait. She was very loyal to her loved ones and protected them above all else. I really liked her.
Daniel was good, for the most part. He was loyal, skilled, and sweet when he wanted to be. My only issue with him was that he tended to overreact to things and ended up hurting the people most important to me. It was especially frustrating because he was a calm and reasonable character otherwise. But, for the most part, I liked him.
Abby and Daniel were a well matched couple. They loved each other beyond all obstacles and they definitely had enough chemistry to heat things up. I thought they were great together.
The plot moved quickly, keeping me engaged from the start. I really liked the story and the ending was a perfect tie-up.
The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor was a really enjoyable historical romance that I liked. Romance lovers, this is a book worth checking out.

I have loved Paula Quinn's books since I first read "Laird of the Mist" back in 2007. She became an automatic buy for me with that first book and I have all her books (including her "Risande Family" series). "The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor" reminded me why I fell in love with this author's writing and her stories from the very beginning. It is a fabulous book that I could not put down. I really enjoyed the follow-up to Davina MacGregor's story which began in "Ravished by a Highlander."
If you love Highlanders, sweet romance, mystery and intrigue, you will love this book. I did!

Paula Quinn has raised the bar with this one. This novel continues the series in a way that her loyal fans will adore. The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor will surely charm new readers into the fold as well.

Its a story about love, trust and honor. I really liked Daniel and Abigail. Never get enough of Macgregor's story. It makes me feel more like part of their family. I truly enjoy everything Paula Quinn has written and consider her my favourite Scottish author.

Come in tutti i romanzi di questa autrice e, generalmente, in qualsiasi altro troviamo sempre dei cattivi degni di nota o, comunque, antagonisti che spaziano dal viscido, all’avido di potere o alla donna che vuole sedurre e conquistare ad ogni costo il protagonista maschile per ottenere prestigio ed essere così quella più venerata e considerata.
Al momento parlo sia di Montagu, il nipote della regina, che della sua amante, Lady Charlotte duchessa di Blackburn, amica a sua volta della sovrana Anna, una stronza di prima categoria che, conoscendo un segreto sul nostro protagonista, trama per avere da lui molto più che la semplice compagnia a letto.
Ecco, se disprezzate come me questo tipo di soggetti, vuol dire che i personaggi sono stati caratterizzati come si deve.
Per quanto riguarda i protagonisti, beh! si capisce subito che Abby è una donna di carattere, di forte temperamento e personalità, lei vuole diventare il futuro capo del clan e vede in Daniel il marito perfetto a supportarla nel difficile compito anche se, a complicare le cose, c’è sempre quel piccolo problema: lui è fedele alla regina Anna ed è soprannominato il “Flagello Giacobita” proprio perché ha ammazzato tanti seguaci del pretendente al trono inglese. Da parte sua pure Daniel si trova a un bivio, deve scegliere se restare devoto alla corona o cedere alla forte sbandata per la giovane scozzese, bella e indomita.
Le premesse per una storia avvincente, quindi, ci sono tutte e poi, del resto, questo è un libro di Paula Quinn, una che quando si tratta di Scozia e Highlander sa molto bene di cosa sta parlando.

Lush, lush Highland tale! Loved! That’s it. I’ve decided. Paula Quinn is a deity in this genre or a cyborg Highland/Historical Romance novelist here on Earth to churn out Rich, multi-dimensional characters, thrilling plots and imagery that captivates. The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor is my favorite Highland/Historical Romance of 2015. And I indulge in this yummy genre often. It is especially fitting, as Quinn supersedes herself as 2014’s The MacGregors: Highland Heirs #2, was my absolute favorite Highland Historical Romance last year. Scandalous Secrets definitely lived up to its title. The story, the story! So exciting! Abigail is the fierce and loyal daughter to the true heir of the English crown who will stop at nothing to protect her beloved Highland homeland from the possible threat of invasion by the sitting queen, Anne. Our hero Daniel (Daniel!!!!) is the most beloved Knight of the queen’s forces who is duty bound to fetch Abigail and bring her to meet the Queen to ensure no usurping is on the horizon. Daniel is a hero- – and I don’t mean in name only as the male protagonist. Daniel is a HERO. The stuff little highland girls (and highland wannabe girls) dreams are made of. He can fend off more than a dozen men in battle, bathed in blood and still stop the heart of his bonny lass. He is fearsome and viral and maturely sexy with hard planes and ridges in his abdomen and legs of a stallion and a big heavy, weighty peen! More than that he is a good man. Honorable and respectful, wise and handsome. Hero, through and through. Daniel is beholden to his queen and fights the temptation of the promise he sees in young Abigail’s eyes. Abby is smitten, done for, her heart lost to Daniel not long after they begin their journey to England. Though she is no brainless, daft lady and the deadly secrets she harbors she clings to until discovery is unavoidable, Abby is a worthy heroine. She is proud, but not too obstinate to deny the desires of her soul. She is protective of her clan and has her eyes set on being clan chief when her father steps down. Ambitious and stubborn, there is no chance she will completely bend to any man’s will. Tough metal and soft womanly wiles, she is something to behold!
“You smashed a vase into my skull. I’m glad you slept well and didn’t burden yourself with thoughts that you might have killed me.” She blinked, giving reprieve from the cold frost of her eyes. “Ye were treating me like a misbehaving child. Be thankful ye’re still alive.”
The obstacles to their HEA were many. They were quite literally in a Hatfields vs McCoy’s love affair. He was a sworn sword against her people who believed another to be the rightful ruler and participated in insurgency against the crown. She was resolute in her bone deep belief that her own kin is the true heir to the throne and the current Queen the pretender. The dangers for falling in love with Daniel were substantial- the most imminent being a supremely delusional and (allegedly) homicidal admirer in the Duchess Charlotte Blackburn, a venomous, faithless woman hell-bent on sharing Daniel’s bed and claiming his child. Drama in the castle!! Yet true to her courageous spirit, Abby was cautious, but confident when confronted with Lady Blackburn’s ire.
“Caution with Lady Blackburn is imperative,” she told Abby. “She seems to be charmed by Daniel alone.” “Where I grew up,” Abby told her, “we cut the heads off venomous snakes.” Daniel reveled in the glorious woman sitting across from him, so bold, so proud. [Queen] Anne saw her inner strength and leaned closer in her chair. “What if the snake has been your friend for many, many years? What if you don’t know how to cut off her head?”
Yessssss! The plot thickens! One of the finer aspects of this book is that the plot was ever moving, always advancing and revealing new (hilarious!!) characters and court intrigues. Daniel escorts Abby to London and on the way they encounter bandits, an ambush and aid from the most unlikely Highlander local clan. Despite being chocked full of Alpha male presence, there were no chauvinistic nuances. I loved that the feminine power was revered and respected by all of the male characters. I loved not knowing who would leave their home behind to start anew with the other. There was definite promise of an HEA, however, it was so damn entertaining, I was not preoccupied with it. I laughed aloud, blushed, giggled and audibly panted several times over. Seriously, the build up of sensuality and sexual tension was rewarding (as evidence by my sticky fingers heh heh, tis true lass!!)
She wanted more, something instinctual and feral, something he gave to no other woman before her or after her. More than his body she wanted the wild heart beneath all the armor…
She was awakening parts of him that had been put to sleep long ago. Duty to God and to the throne came before selfish desire. Honor came before love. But not tonight. Tonight he would give her what she wanted and take what he needed…
When he held her buttocks in his palms and clenched his hands around them, she tried to move off, not really sure of what to do and not convinced that it wasn’t going to hurt like hell. He guided her slowly, sensually, against his warm, hard length. She moved to take him into her, to fulfill some unknown, ancient desire to have him inside her. He stopped her with a low growl and a slow smile…his huge cock nestled between her thighs…she looked down at it and bit her lip and then, from behind her pale locks, she cast him a smile as sinful as his own and began to move over him.
Aye! Aye indeed! Perhaps, the third most important character in the novel, has to be the locale. Traveling the Highlands or on the countryside back roads into England, I felt as if I were one word away from transporting myself and becoming a self proclaimed clan member. I saw myself traveling with the Daniel and Abby, evading danger, I watched Daniel slaughter Abby’s would be attackers and (like the creeper I am) I watched as they dared that first kiss under the stars. Quinn’s descriptive language was engaging and endearing and the only think I missed about this book was an epilogue! I wasn’t ready to let them go, it was all over far too quickly but not the least bit unsatisfying on the whole. if you are a fan of historical fiction and you love these honorable kilted warriors and noble Knights, I recommend this gem. It is the third of its series, but stands alone just fine. Be warned that you are likely to want to immerse yourself and snap up books 1 & 2 and wait ever so impatiently for the next installment, The Taming of Malcolm Grant (The MacGregors: Highland Heirs #4).

Despite being chocked full of Alpha male presence, there were no chauvinistic nuances. I loved that the feminine power was revered and respected by all of the male characters. I loved not knowing who would leave their home behind to start anew with the other. There was definite promise of an HEA, however, it was so damn entertaining, I was not preoccupied with it. I laughed aloud, blushed, giggled and audibly panted several times over. Seriously, the build up of sensuality and sexual tension was rewarding (as evidence by my sticky fingers heh heh, tis true lass!!)
She wanted more, something instinctual and feral, something he gave to no other woman before her or after her. More than his body she wanted the wild heart beneath all the armor…
She was awakening parts of him that had been put to sleep long ago. Duty to God and to the throne came before selfish desire. Honor came before love. But not tonight. Tonight he would give her what she wanted and take what he needed…
When he held her buttocks in his palms and clenched his hands around them, she tried to move off, not really sure of what to do and not convinced that it wasn’t going to hurt like hell. He guided her slowly, sensually, against his warm, hard length. She moved to take him into her, to fulfill some unknown, ancient desire to have him inside her. He stopped her with a low growl and a slow smile…his huge cock nestled between her thighs…she looked down at it and bit her lip and then, from behind her pale locks, she cast him a smile as sinful as his own and began to move over him.
Aye! Aye indeed! Perhaps, the third most important character in the novel, has to be the locale. Traveling the Highlands or on the countryside back roads into England, I felt as if I were one word away from transporting myself and becoming a self proclaimed clan member. I saw myself traveling with the Daniel and Abby, evading danger, I watched Daniel slaughter Abby’s would be attackers and (like the creeper I am) I watched as they dared that first kiss under the stars. Quinn’s descriptive language was engaging and endearing and the only think I missed about this book was an epilogue! I wasn’t ready to let them go, it was all over far too quickly but not the least bit unsatisfying on the whole. if you are a fan of historical fiction and you love these honorable kilted warriors and noble Knights, I recommend this gem. It is the third of its series, but stands alone just fine. Be warned that you are likely to want to immerse yourself and snap up books 1 & 2 and wait ever so impatiently for the next installment, The Taming of Malcolm Grant (The MacGregors: Highland Heirs #4).

The MacGregors and the Grants have been a part of my life for many years now. I've been following them for three generations through Paula Quinn's exceptional storytelling. The third generation's stories are told in the Highland Heirs series, the third book of which is The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor.
First, a bit of historical background is in order. The early 18th century was a turbulent era for Scotland. The exiled Catholic King James II had much support among the Catholic Scots. Known as Jacobites, they viewed James as the true king. This group of Scots were essentially at war with England and with the rest of their own country. At the time of Abigail's story, England was ruled by Anne, James' second daughter. Anne was widowed and childless, and the future of the throne was in question. This only added fuel to the rebelling Scots cause.
Now, a bit of fictional background can be added. In the second generation of MacGregor stories, there was Ravished by a Highlander - my personal favorite of all the MacGregor sagas. If you have not read Ravished, a slight spoiler follows. It tells the tale of Rob MacGregor and Davina Montgomery. As a babe, Davina was hidden away in an abbey to be raised Catholic by the nuns there. Hidden by her father King James II. Her existence was kept a secret in a time when Protestantism was on the rise and taking over the monarchy. In the story, Davina ends up with Rob MacGregor after he rescues her from her enemies. Davina turns her back on any claim to the throne, thereby giving them a lovely HEA. In the meantime Anne, the third daughter of James, grew up unaware of Davina's existence.
But, but by the time Abigail's story takes place, Anne has learned of Davina and the story begins with a letter from the Queen demanding Davina present herself in London, under threat of sending her soldiers. As Davina's daughter, Abigail is worried and anxious to protector her mother, so she plans to go to London instead. Abigail, who plans to be the next chief of clan MacGregor, has made a bold decision and will not be talked out of it even by her father. She must do her part to keep her mother's secret safe and safeguard her family.
Abigail is escorted to London by General Daniel Marlow. Daniel is Queen Anne's right hand and her favorite. He is staunchly loyal to the queen and has proved himself in this regard by defending her against James' supporter. In fact, he is also known as the Jacobite killer. Is it even possible that the Jacobite killer and a Jacobite can travel all the way to London without doing injury to each other?
But Abigail and Daniel are both able to overlook their enmity, at least for the duration of their travel. So, even though Abigail is overly bold and outspoken and even though Daniel has nothing but contempt for her beliefs, the two get to know each other and become friends. Slowly. It begins as a lot of insults and bantering, but leads to more serious conversations and that is sweet and heartwarming. Their friendship deepens, but the constant reminder of their ideological and geographical differences prevents them from fully acknowledging their feelings. There are far too many obstacles to overcome and secrets to keep.
But isn't that what makes such a great story? I read this book knowing that Abigail and Daniel were destined for each other, but unable to fathom how it could possibly work out. Maybe, if they both left everything behind and ran off to Spain. But then, that would not have been in keeping with their characters of a future clan leader and Queen Anne's defender. So, I was 'forced' to read the entire book to find out what would happen the way the author envisioned it.
It was not a hardship to finish the book, but rather a delight. There is so much more than a romance going on in The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor. There is betrayal on the road to London and treason in London. These are opportunities for Daniel and Abigail to display their bravery and honor. The Queen herself is the object of terrible treachery. The result of that treachery lands her in with a group of barbaric, uncivilized highlanders in a scene that is humorous but, at the same time, bittersweet for the Queen.
For those that are stickers for historical accuracy, I would say that The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor is fiction. Dancing around a few facts does not rewrite history but it does add depth and relevance to the story. And in my case, spurred me to read more about the real Queen Anne. For example, I found out that, in real life, she did like to drive her one-horse carriage in a reckless manner, just like she did in her fictional life.
I was thrilled to be able to read and review The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor. As always, Paula Quinn writes a truly fabulous tale filled with adventure and intrigue and mostly with romance. Her characters are profound and her writing is passionate. This books stands alone, but is also part of a wonderful group of three series of books spanning the generations of an extraordinary group of highlanders. I loved the intricacy of the story—its plot line depicting real bloodlines and the fight for the throne—as well as the true meaning of honor, depicted in its Hero. The heroine is a captivating character the reader finds itself championing at every turn. Lovely story.

MAGNETIC FAST PACED SEXY HIGHLANDER TALE
Paula Quinn is one of the most talented authors in today’s historical romance world. I haven’t read a book written by her that I have been disappointed. She was put on my auto buy list immediately after I read Lord of Desire in 2005. Her unique mix of history and fiction along with her characters and plots captivates the reader and pulls them into the story making them feel as if they are there along with the characters in another time and place. All the reader has to do is open the book to the first page, begin reading, and escape into one of the best adventure’s they will ever experience. The story will take them there. The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor fits into this category as well.
Abigail MacGregor’s, an ambitious highland bold beauty, with courage and strength to become clan chief after her father, main concern is in keeping her mother’s and clans secret, which if made known could mean war for Scotland. Although the Clan MacGregor is proscribed by England, her mother, being the actual true heir to the English Throne is summoned to the Royal Court. As her mother is just getting over an illness, Abigail is determined that she must answer the summons with the goal of reinforcing to the Queen that her mother is absolutely no threat to the crown. The truth is that her mother has no interest whatsoever in taking the royal seat.
Her escort, General Daniel Marlow, the most handsome trusted knight of the Queen, is a hero in every sense of the word, the kind of which invades the dreams of young ladies, the kind of which all young men strive to be like. Daniel is a highly desired loyal knight, and he finds his mission to escort this fiery spirited beauty a temptation with which he must struggle. The feudal sparks between this couple fly from the first meeting. Abigail is unlike any other woman he has ever met and he finds her refreshing innocence very captivating and tempting. He feels that he would choose the battlefield any day over fighting the battle to ignore the disturbing heat she creates within him. Abigail, being as bold as she is she didn’t count on having to fight the strong attraction of her escort, threats being in the form of his meaningful and sexual kisses that disturbs her in ways she has never known. The two encounter many dangers on the route to London, but it doesn’t end there. Courtly politics, backstabbing, and plots are no surprise to Abigail and she finds she must use her wits and strength even after she reaches her destination.
Along with the murder, mystery, kidnapping, assassinations, sexual steamy tension, romance, and thrilling adventure, I found myself laughing out loud at times. This book, along with Paula Quinn’s other books, is a page turning keeper shelf can’t put down and even carry to the bathroom read! Never repetitive and never boring, I very highly recommend this author to anyone who loves a great historical romance. This is one you will find yourself going back to time and again. If this is the first book you read by Paula Quinn, it will not be the last. You will find yourself pulled to obtain her previous books for your keeper shelf.

Paula Quinn has done it again with another well written romance that takes the reader from the beginning and immerses them in the Scottish and English countryside in the time period that the story travels in. You are taken back to a time where the clans were powerful and the English and Scottish dislike for each other prevailed in history. Having read The Wicked Ways of Alexander Kidd I was delighted when I could follow up on other members of the clan. Quinn’s characters are strong and have depth and she keeps the reader turning pages with intrigue and suspense interspersed through the love story.
Abigail Macgregor is the strong bold daughter of the chief of the clan. She is determined that she will take over as chief after her father. Her mother is the true heir to the British throne but is content to stay in Scotland with her family. When Abigail’s mother is summoned by the Queen (her sister) to go to London Abigail knows that she must go for her as her mother is too weak to travel. To keep her clan safe Abigail starts the journey in the company of her enemy – a Jacobite killer. The dilemma is that she finds him attractive and as the physical attraction increases she finds herself wanting more and more from him. Throughout their treacherous journey she finds that she can depend on Daniel to protect her. But will he protect her family? When they get to London Daniel finds out who she truly is and Abigail realizes that their love might not be able to survive. They come from two totally different worlds. When her life is threatened Daniel is there beside her and protects her again. Abigail knows that there will never be anyone else for her but can Daniel give up his life to love the “enemy” and accept her family?
Daniel Marlow is a loyal knight to the Queen with a decorated battle history; however he finds that the Queen has hidden a major secret from him concerning his birthright. When she asks him to accompany a highlander back to London he does so with trepidation however when he meets Abigail he is smitten from the beginning. She is strong and beautiful and he battles himself throughout the story on how he can be falling in love with the enemy. When Abigail is threatened Daniel realizes that somehow he must keep her beside him forever. But how will he get her father’s approval? And what will the Queen think?
The story is filled with villains and heroes from both sides and the reader soon realizes the complexity and violence of our history. This is a great book to curl up with however I would give myself lots of time as you won’t want to put it down. I look forward to more Highland stories by Paula Quinn.

Historical intrigue, action, and undeniable passion – what's not to love? (Other than the perfectly crafted villainess Charlotte, Duchess of Blackburn – what a b***h!)
Abigail MacGregor and Daniel Marlow are the Jacobite era equivalent of Romeo and Juliet. Daniel is sworn to serve and protect Queen Anne of Great Britain, while Abigail is the daughter of Anne's secret older sister Davina– the rightful Queen. Abigail's royal lineage, coupled with her outlaw Highland roots, should make her the last woman confirmed bachelor and loyal general Daniel Marlow would give his heart to. Daniel has spent his entire life close to Queen Anne and has build his career on protecting her throne from Jacobite rebels, such as the MacGregors.
The wonderful thing about Abigail and Daniel's tale is, despite their differences, they are able to see past labels and prejudices and learn to love –and more importantly like– each other as individuals. Unable to deny their attraction and affection, they each retain a realistic outlook as to the futility of their connection, all the while falling further in as while their future grows farther out of reach. Luckily, honesty, mutual respect and communication save the day – with a little help from Abigail's family.
On its own, the love of Abigail and Daniel would be a compelling read, however the historical elements are tightly woven into the story and enhance it rather than act as mere background. Paula Quinn continues to skillfully mine the era of Jacobite conflict to create historically accurate and intriguing plots, peppered with exciting action sequences. This is the third generation of MacGregors that Ms. Quinn has treated readers to (check out awesome MacGregor family tree and bonus details). The reappearance in The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor of characters from earlier novels is welcome, as they retain their unique personalities and add real value to the story instead of appearing one-dimensional. I have to point out, Abby's father Rob MacGregor (hero of Ravished by a Highlander) still cuts a fine figure. It's easy to imagine choosing a life with him over the precarious position as Queen– smart move, Davina.

Paula Quinn brings readers the third book in the MacGregor's Highland Heirs series, The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor. This is a story of the turbulent pasts of both England and Scotland. Readers who love historical romance can't wrong with this one. Quinn's characters are well drawn and intriguing, while the premise of the book is complex and riveting. Secrets, betrayal, an assassination attempt, all of these things and more come into play in this novel. Quinn is on a roll with this series and this is the best book yet.
Having read the other two books in this series, I was excited to review this one. Paula Quinn has what it takes when it comes to historical writing. She uses her imagination liberally and comes up with something that is not only entertaining, but historically plausible. It didn't happen this way, but could you imagine if it did? Quinn could and did. Loved it!
Quinn has done her homework with this one. Being of Scottish descent means I take it seriously when a writer takes on a story involving the Highlands or Scotland in general. I want there to be a certain amount of authenticity in the writing. It's one thing to write about the Regency period that has been thoroughly saturated. Any good historical writer that is worth his/her salt could probably come up with something good, without a lot of research. Tackling the Highland spirit along with the difficult relations between England and Scotland, that's a little more ambitious and Quinn does it with style here.
I loved Abigail. She was a true Highland lass. She was strong, courageous and independent. And she was stubborn as an ox... LOL! She had some sass to her and it was no wonder Daniel was stunned by her. Just a wonderful character and very well written. It was interesting seeing her grow and change throughout the book. Fall in love tends to do that to you. Daniel's change was incredibly gratifying as well. Going to from a Jacobite Killer to a Jacobite lover in one fell swoop. Great characters, with great chemistry. Quinn knows how to write a good love scene and fans to like books more on the romantic side get a great balance with this book. Lots of political intrigue and lots of lusty encounters. That's Scotland for you!

The best part of the book for me was the fact that not only Abigail but the rest of the MacGregor's have a part to play in this story. I also liked the whole Queen of England play in this novel. I wanted a lot of romance and I got it. I wanted a lot of mystery and political espionage and I got that too. Quinn is word master. Her skills at bringing her characters and the scene to life were simply magical. You gotta read this one... it's just that good!

Well, this is embarrassing, folks. I read this quite awhile ago before I was an active GRs user so did not post any comments at the time. This is more of a personal note to myself that I remember reading and enjoying this book. Other than foggy memories of snippets of the basic plot, I'd have to do a reread to post an informative review. For now, these comments are meant mostly to update my GRs bookshelves.
I definitely should mention Paula Quinn's writing style is always a big hit with me, and I love this particular series. She's one of my "must read" Scottish historical romance authors.

Being a Paula Quinn fan I am always anxiously awaiting her newest novel to hit the shelf. The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor is her latest literary work. This novel is a story woven within the clan MacGregor, a Highland family of Scottish heroes and troubadours who fight for love, family, freedom, and the preservation of their way of life.
I found myself taking my time with this read. Abigail is a fierce woman who has a very strong desire to lead and a mind that thinks before she speaks and acts. Daniel Marlowe is a perfect compliment to Abigail and their slow tumble into love is worth every adventure and every secret. This book emphasizes family as the ties that not only bind but bolster one as well. You will discover that secrets long held and then revealed (as secrets inevitably unravel) are often lessons that test and teach patience, faith, trust, and understanding. Love, and the sacrifices made for it, has Daniel and Abigail fighting to maintain who they thought they were with who they can be, together.
Ms. Quinn has a true gift in writing historical romance as she has brought to life a Scottish clan that you will wish you could be a member of. In each new novel we get to smile and sigh at past heroes and still chuckle at their actions and reactions to the younger generation unfolding on the pages of her latest work. I see the patriarch of Clan MacGregor, Calum, in stories woven about his grandchildren, much as one is often reminded of family long gone but still present in the sparkle of an eye, or a quirky mannerism lovingly realized in the new generation. You will want their story, their clan family, to continue in future novels.
I highly recommend reading Paula Quinn. I loved The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor and you will as well. Be prepared to fall in love with the Macgregor’s and the lives they lead. Thank You, Paula Quinn, for your talent.

This is book 3 in The MacGregors: Highland Heirs series.
When Abigail MacGregor's mother is called to England by the Queen, she knows she will stand in her place. Her mother has just gotten over a prolonged illness and if someone doesn't go, it could mean war for Scotland. She didn't count on being attracted to her English escort.
General Daniel Marlow, can't believe that the Queen has sent him to Scotland to get one of her handmaidens. He would much rather be on the battlefield defending England. When he starts to have feelings for Abigail, he feels as if he is betraying his Queen.
Can these two enemies find an everlasting love without betraying their countries?
I fell in love with the male MacGregors cousins when I read The Seduction of Miss Amelia Bell (the first book of Quinn's that I had read). When she started telling the stories of the females I didn't know what to anticipate. After reading The Wicked Ways of Alexander Kidd, I fell in love with them too. The love affair continues with Abigail! We see a lot more of the older generation in this book. I've not read any of those, but after hearing bits and pieces of Abigail's parent's story, I'm going to have to read those pretty soon!!
I loved the enemy turned lovers theme that this story follows. It takes place in a time where the English and the Scots hate each other. With stories like this, you have the characters fighting their attraction for each other because they feel like it is wrong. That adds all kinds of drama. Add to that the life of a want-to-be lover, an assassin and the Queen of England and the drama never stops!
Next up is Malcolm's story (I can't wait!!!!). It will be interesting to see how Quinn brings him up to scratch!! September seems so far away...
