To have her magic unlocked, Ness Riseworth exchanged ten years of her life in service to the Imperial Protectorate.
Her assignment for the last decade has been training new magic wielders. But when a woman with a striking resemblance to Ness dies on her way to a rebel gathering, the Protectorate doesn’t care that Ness has no experience with spying, only that she is their best hope to infiltrate this group plotting against the Empire.
When she struggles to maintain her cover as a rebel leader, her attractive commander reminds her that people will believe what she tells them. He may be off-limits, but he is becoming increasingly jealous of the smoldering moments Ness shares with a handsome rebel leader to gain information.
Time is running out for Ness to uncover all she needs to know to stop this rebellion before it becomes a war.
THIS is the kind of fantasy romance I like to read! STEAMY sexual tension; perfect balance of humor, action, and heart; genuinely unexpected plot twist; and a relatable main character who grows into her power and confidence through the story. Also there’s a sassy horse named Sugardrop, so what more could you want?
I loved Ness's characterization- she's not perfect, but she tries her best and truly cares for those around her. I found myself relating so hard to her struggles with imposter syndrome and loneliness, and teared up while cheering her on as she finds her inner strength throughout the story. The power of friendship is a huge theme in this book, and it made my heart smile to see Ness bloom in the company of people who care for her.
Marley Ferguson has a gift for making all her characters come to life, even the more minor roles. It was easy to immerse myself in this world, and I genuinely cared about everyone we met in the story. Also the plot twist is GOOD and I did not see that coming!
Honestly I could write 17 more paragraphs about how much I love this book, but I'll leave it here. I already can't wait for book 2, and in the meantime will re-read book 1 and hang out with Ness some more.
The book was filled with banter, magic, adventure, and a plot twist that I didn’t see coming. Ness, the FMC, was one badass spy that showed amazing growth throughout the book. The slow burn romance was also nicely weaved into the story.
Overall, this book kept me completely engaged from the beginning to the end 💗
I want to start by thanking, Marley Ferguson, the author for allowing me to read this advanced reader copy 🤩 this was my first ever ARC and it will hold a special place in my heart.
The story started out slow for me, and it took me a bit of time to get invested into Ness’s story and really care about what she was facing, and the struggles that she was dealing with. But once they’re on their journey to the island and begin interacting with all of the different rebel groups, the story really sped up and caught my interest.
We don’t know much about Ness but the more she learns about herself, and the more she grows as a person, the more her strengths come to light. She starts off with a lack of confidence, and almost a characterization of someone who has been abused in their life. She is expecting the worst. She doesn’t think she deserves to be treated well, she puts up with bad behavior and mistreatment, and we kind of get the sense that she feels helpless.
As the story progresses, Ness grows in confidence and strength, both physical and mental strength because she’s going through defensive training and political battles via coded conversations. As she unearths more of the rebellion plot and learns more about everything going on in the world that she live in, she starts to realize that everything she’s been taught is a lie, and she might not be who she thinks she is.
The tension between her and another rebel is what makes this book so addicting! There’s political intrigue and almost rebellion within a rebellion as Ness comes to terms with the reality of her situation, in addition to the spying and the sneaking around. But the cherry on top is this unresolved tension between her and a certain dark haired villain that I hope is continued in to book 2!
I’m so ready for the sequel, I need to know what’s next I her story. I can’t wait to see her fully embrace her power and destroy all those that treated her as a pawn.
Ness Riseworth exchanged 10 years of her life in service of the Empire in exchange for unlocking her magic. Her assignment for the last decade has been training new wielders until she is reassigned to be a spy for the Empire.
She takes the place of a woman whom she bears a striking resemblance to in order to infiltrate a possible gathering of rebels. When she struggles to maintain her cover, her very attractive commander reminds her that people will believe what they are told. He also becomes increasingly jealous of the smouldering flirtations Ness has with one of the rebel leaders.
Can Ness find the information she needs and therefore make it to the end of her service unscathed and free?
This was a wonderful read . Another FMC who isn’t just a 17 year old which I bloody love. Ness also speaks to me. The way she clings on to connections due to loneliness really makes me feel seen as I was exactly the same growing up. The way Ness has to come to terms with this particular trait also echoed my own struggles.
You really don’t see the plot twist coming and it’s testament to how well the author lays down the plot. You suddenly get to it and it all makes complete sense. I actually gasped aloud when all was revealed. I can’t wait to read the sequel to find out what happens next
So this turned out to be really good! I was a little bored in the beginning but the ending seriously made up for a lot of the world building in the beginning. There were definitely a few 🤯 moments that kept me hooked and it seriously helped the Ransom was charming as fuck! Go team Ransom. I mean how could I not. I love me a morally grey man. I will give you the main reason why I first came to not like Lev……he was only there for himself. All I’m saying…..
Ugh poor Ness, poor naive Ness….I mean she is super smart but poor girl didn’t question or think for herself for a long time and just went with the flow and believed what she was told throughout her life. I seriously came to love the rest of the little group she came with tho and I feel like they have become a pseudo-found family for her. I like her character development so far and began to connect things together. I am actually excited for the next book cause I am looking forward to the situation she has found herself in 😏!
4.5⭐️ - This was a fantastic debut by Marley Ferguson! There was so much to love in this book - world building, magic, political intrigue, found family, forbidden romance, plot twists, and even some comedy!
Our FMC Ness is just trying to complete the last few months of her service to the Empire as a teacher to new wielders when she finds herself thrown into a brand new assignment. Her world gets turned upside down when she’s tasked with becoming a spy to infiltrate a potential rebel gathering.
This book had such a perfect blend of humor, sexual tension, and action. The world felt super immersive, and I could picture myself there right alongside Ness!
I genuinely did not see that plot twist coming and was so shocked when we got there. I was left with a few questions by the end, and I’m excited to see where we go from here in Book 2!
Thank you so much to Marley Ferguson and Torch Lit Ink for the gifted copy of this one!
Ness has spent the past 10 years serving her duty to the empire. Training young magic wielders in the Capital City how to hone their craft and become the best they can be. One morning, orders pull Ness from her regular routine and when everything goes awry, she’s punished by being sent away from the only life and friends she’s ever known to serve as guard at an outpost.
Shortly after arriving, new orders are demanded of her. Ness bares a striking resemblance to a foreign leader, Aurora, who is supposed to be attending a rebel gathering soon. The empire needs Ness to go undercover and find out whatever information she can about the upcoming rebellion, or her and her new crew will not be returning from this mission alive.
In the beginning of the novel, I found it to be a little difficult to understand, there was a lot of world building and many names of different leaders across the lands. It took a bit for me to remember who everyone was but once I did things flowed from there. I liked the magic system and am very curious to learn more about it in the upcoming books.
This book had everything that I love, fae, magic and adventure, but I couldn’t help feeling like I knew what was going to happen very early on. I gathered the pieces pretty quickly and though I didn’t 100% call it, the twist was not a surprise to me. I liked Ness as a character and enjoyed watching her grow through her character arc. However, for people who are trying to keep their cover as spies, I don’t think daily meetings to teach Ness the history of the land she’s supposed to be the “leader” of is very inconspicuous.
I felt a connection to the characters and am looking forward to reading book two someday when it’s realeased. I have so many questions that I need answers to!
I’m grateful to have gotten the chance to read and review this ARC of Rebellion in the Mist. Thank you Marley for this advanced copy!
What a fun debut novel! Marley did a great job bringing the characters to life! When you think about romantasy, this is a good example.
There’s a perfect amount of action, tension (more sexual than not 😂) and a good bit of humor. The magic and world-building makes you want to keep flipping to page to find out what’s coming. The forbidden romance and found family were probably some of my favorite parts.
Ness has her life twisted upside down - going from a life of service to a life of spying and infiltrating. She’s such a caring person and she grows so much in the presence of people that care for her. Friendship was largely incorporated within the story and it really made me happy for her to see her find herself.
That cliffhanger at the end though…be prepared! Did not really see that plot twist coming! So ready for book 2. Thank you Marley for the early read - well done. All opinions are my own.
This was a very fun book, I absolutely had a great time reading! The banter is top notch and had me kicking my feet.
I loved Ness. She is a strong and feisty fmc. She is selfish and brave. She is sent on a spy mission she’s not been trained for and her main priority is keeping her friends safe. She soon begins to see that you can’t trust everything you’ve been told and some people aren’t who they seem… herself included.
This story is filled with secrets and lies ,but also humor and amazing banter. I really enjoyed the plot and crazy twists! I’m going to need book 2 and more Ransom asap! Oh and maybe a certain sassy horse!
A fun and creative take on the fae that I absolutely loved (especially Sugardrop). I really liked the overall premise as fake identity/stolen identity has always been a theme I've lived in books and this one executed it so well. I loved Ness as a character and connected with her on a personal level and loved her character development through the book. I can't wait to read the next one. Thanks again to Marley Ferguson for allowing me to read this eARC.
I received this book as an ARC and was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it. Each character had a unique place in the overall story. Magic and divided kingdoms and interesting connections filled these pages and kept me wanting more. Looking forward to book two!!
Rebellion in the Mist by Marley Ferguson is a captivating fantasy romance that blends intrigue, magic, and political tension in a richly imagined world. At its heart is Ness Riseworth, who has spent ten years in service to the Imperial Protectorate training new magic wielders—a sacrifice she made to unlock her own magical potential. But when a woman who bears a striking resemblance to her dies on the way to a rebel gathering, Ness is thrust into a mission far beyond her training: to infiltrate the rebellion and uncover secrets that could ignite a full‑blown war.
What makes this story compelling is how it balances cloak‑and‑dagger espionage with emotional stakes. As Ness navigates her dangerous undercover role, she struggles to maintain her cover while aligning with rebels whose cause is murky and whose leader challenges her heart as much as her loyalties. The slow build of tension between duty and desire adds depth, while the looming threat of escalating conflict keeps the plot moving with dramatic momentum.
The worldbuilding feels expansive and layered, offering both glimpses of political complexity and glimpses of personal stakes. Ness’s growth—from reluctant operative to someone confronting both her inner power and her heart—makes Rebellion in the Mist more than just a fantasy adventure: it’s a story about trust, identity, and choosing one’s path even when the cost is high.
With almost 402 pages of magic, romance, and rebellion, this book is an engaging pick for readers who love fantasy with strong heroines, simmering tension, and stakes that balance the personal with the epic.
Rebellion in The Mist by Marley Ferguson is an exhilarating fantasy romance filled with magic, espionage, forbidden love, and rebellion.
The book starts off a little slowly to give us context to the world and how things work, and it quickly picks up after everything is established. I loved the magic system and the foreword that talks about the book being “interpreted into modern English from the original texts”. It’s a small detail that helps with an immersive reading experience.
I love that Ness is realistic in that she isn’t this perfect and infallible main character. She has flaws, she has fears, she stumbles, but she always has good intentions and tries her best. And while she’s realistic, she isn’t a simple character either. I found her to be both endearing and complex. (And I like that she is in her mid-20s instead of being younger, though I may just be biased because *I’m* in my mid-20s. 😂)
And the PLOT… well… there’s not much I can say about that without spoilers, but just know that I was SAT. I also really enjoyed the descriptions of the settings, locations, and characters throughout the book. Having detailed descriptions of things helps to paint a picture as you’re reading, so it was very much appreciated.
This was definitely an amazing debut, and I am excited to see what else Marley Ferguson does next! I am honored to have been able to read an ARC copy of this book.
I went into Rebellion in the Mist expecting romantic fantasy with a dash of rebellion. What I got was a surprisingly layered story about loyalty, identity, and what happens when the “right side” stops feeling so right.
And honestly? I’m still thinking about it.
First Impressions
From the opening chapters, the tone feels heavy in a good way—like something is always simmering beneath the surface. The Empire is powerful, controlled, and structured. The rebels are whispered about, half-feared and half-admired. There’s tension in the air before the plot even fully unfolds.
We follow Ness Riseworth, a trained magic wielder who has dedicated ten years to serving the Imperial Protectorate. She willingly accepted what the empire told her; she's loyal to a fault and does her best to keep her nose down so she can finish out her contract and move on to whatever is beyond the capital city. A series of events through her whole world upside down when she’s ordered to infiltrate the very rebellion she’s been taught to suppress.
That’s when everything gets interesting.
Ness: Strength Without Recklessness
One thing I really appreciated is that Ness isn’t written as a reckless, rule-breaking heroine from the start. She believes in the system. She trusts her training. Watching that certainty slowly fracture is far more compelling than an instant change of heart.
Her inner conflict feels real. The undercover mission forces her to see people—not enemies. And that shift is gradual, uncomfortable, and beautifully written. Allowed her to see the other side of the story from a perspective she would not have gotten if the empire had not placed her in the midst of it.
The Politics & Worldbuilding
The political tension carries the story. It’s not just “Empire bad, rebels good.” There are shades of gray everywhere. Every side believes they’re justified, and that ambiguity makes the stakes feel authentic.
The magic system is structured and controlled by the Empire, which adds another layer of unease. Power isn’t just a gift—it’s monitored, weaponized, and political.
If you enjoy fantasy where the world feels lived-in and morally complicated, this hits the mark.
The Romance (Because Yes, There’s Romance)
Let’s talk about it.
The romantic tension weaves seamlessly into the main plot rather than distracting from it. There’s emotional history. There’s an attraction tangled up in loyalty. There’s that delicious slow-burn uncertainty where you’re not sure who Ness should trust—politically or romantically.
It’s not fluff. It’s messy. And that’s what makes it work.
A Few Honest Thoughts
The pacing in the beginning is steady rather than explosive. Personally, I liked the buildup because it made the infiltration arc stronger—but if you prefer instant action, it may feel slow at first.
I also found myself wishing for even deeper exploration of the Empire’s origins and the rebellion’s ideology. The groundwork is strong; I just wanted more of it (which honestly is a good sign). Maybe a prequel is on the horizon?
Final Verdict
Rebellion in the Mist feels like the start of a series that’s going to hurt—in the best way. It’s a thoughtful romantic fantasy with emotional weight and political complexity.
If you love:
Undercover spy storylines Morally gray characters Political tension Slow-burn romance with real stakes You’ll probably enjoy this one.
“Rebellion in the Mist” follows a magic-wielding teacher, Ness, who, after a series of unfortunate events, is forced to become a spy—a role she’s never been trained for. You can imagine just how stressful that turns out to be.
Ness is socially awkward and, in her own eyes, nothing special. Her biggest dream is simply to finish her ten-year duty to the Empire and finally start living a real life alongside her two closest friends. She’s straightforward, and since the narrative is told from her POV, the prose isn’t particularly flowery. I grew to appreciate that style over time though.
Although Ness occasionally finds herself in humorous situations, I wouldn’t label this book as a comedy. I actually saw it marketed under comedy trope and thought, “Cool! I need something light and funny!”. But while there are comedic touches, the story is much deeper and at times even sad. It’s not a flaw—but it could confuse readers who go in expecting a lighthearted romp.
If we put aside the comedy expectation, what we get is a really solid (debut?) romantasy. The beginning is a bit slow, but once the pace picks up, it’s fast, engaging, and layered with political intrigue, spy training, and one of my favorite tropes—found family. There’s also a love triangle, which I usually don’t like very much, but I actually enjoyed how it was handled here.
What stood out most for me, though, was Ness herself. She surprised me. As the chapters unfold, you realize just how much she struggles with loneliness—likely her greatest enemy. It’s a sneaky, destructive force, making her desperate for closeness and prone to putting her trust in the wrong people. She eventually begins to see this for herself, and with outside help, she makes an important discovery: that much of her self-doubt stems from manipulation and brainwashing that convinced her she’s a nobody and that she should please everyone around her, even if that meant forgetting about herself in the process.
By the end of the book, Ness is broken but self-aware—a heroine who clearly needs healing before she can learn to love herself and find her place in a world that has betrayed her. That, combined with the romantic subplot, makes me impatient for book two, which I’ll definitely be picking up.

Rebellion in the Mist by Marley Ferguson delivers a sweeping fantasy romance packed with secrets, sorcery, and mounting political unrest inside a vividly crafted world. The story centers on young woman named Ness who sacrificed a decade of her life serving the Imperial Protectorate to awaken her own magic while training others. Her life takes a sharp turn when a woman who looks eerily like her is killed enroute to a rebel meeting, forcing Ness into an undercover assignment she was never meant to handle. Suddenly she’s embedded within a rebellion that could tip the empire into war, and every choice she makes carries enormous risk.
What makes the novel so gripping is the way covert intrigue is woven together with deeply personal conflict. Ness must constantly walk the line between survival and loyalty, especially as she grows closer to rebels whose motives aren’t as clear as they seem. Their leader tests not only her mission, but her emotions, creating a steady, slow-burning pull between responsibility and longing. That emotional tension fuels the narrative just as much as the looming threat of violence, keeping the pace tight and the stakes high.
The setting feels layered and expansive, blending large-scale political maneuvering with intimate character struggles. Ness’s evolution is especially satisfying to watch; she transforms from a dutiful operative into someone willing to question authority, confront her identity, and claim her own power. The novel ultimately explores trust, self-discovery, and the cost of choosing your own future in a world determined to control it.
At just over 400 pages, the book offers a rich mix of magic, romance, and rebellion that will hook anyone who enjoys fierce heroines, simmering chemistry, and stories where personal choices echo across an entire kingdom. It’s immersive, emotional, and full of momentum from beginning to end.
In Rebellion in the Mist by Marley Ferguson, we are presented with a fairly average magic-wielding heroine, Ness, who is a soldier for The Empire. After some chaos, she ends up being forced into espionage, playing the role of a neighboring queen who is actively working towards a rebellion against the Empire.
I really enjoyed the storyline and Ness's flirtatious adventures, but I found myself wishing the characters had more depth.
I loved struggling along with Ness as she discovered there was more to her powers, and I related heavily to her stress of never being "good enough." But she also infuriated me with many of her impulsive decisions.
Ransom was a really fun character, but Lev annoyed me from the beginning 😂
The magic system, involving magical stones that “unlock” a wielder’s powers, was fascinating to me, as was the mandatory service to the Empire in exchange for the chance at unlocking wielding abilities. I'd have loved more of day to day life in cities of civilians, and I'd have loved more exploring of relationships between wielders and non-wielders.
There was a chosen one/prophecy theme that was fun (but expected) and a couple of twists at the end that I really enjoyed.
I think my favorite part, aside from Ransom the Hot Rebel Daddy™️, was watching Ness’s worldview change with exposure to other cultures. I think this message is especially important today - that you can participate in a corrupt system but you can learn, and grow, and make an effort to do good despite the way you were raised and despite any past actions that may have hurt people.
Ultimately, Rebellion in the Mist was a fun espionage romantasy with a love triangle, a fantastically flirty slow burn, and a story of brainwashing and personal growth.
This book was truly amazing and refreshing. I loved the MFC, Ness and her character development was very real. She was just a very real character in general and that what made this book so good. She wasn't the perfect stereotypic FMC. She struggled her way through and as a reader I could relate to how she was feeling and if I was thrown into what she was thrown into, I would probably feel and act the same way. She truly did her best to protect not just herself, but those around her, and the place she called home. She hardly knew the people she was working with, but the fact she went through al of that to protect them, shows that she is a compassionate character. Also the banter between her and the MMC, oh it was amazing. Was it truly just an act or was it something more? He was a very respectful rebellion leader and I loved it. There was one character I truly did not like, but for good reason and I believe it was to be intentional which I think was very clever on the authors part, she made a great character to dislike, and the plot twist really made everything fall into place and I'm happy with Nesses decision. Finally, I loved the little found family this story created as well, there little secret group really brought it all together and made me fall in love with the character even more.
Overall I loved the writing style of Marley Ferguson and cant wait to read book 2 when it is release and I highly suggest you pick up this amazing book as well!
Ness is such a compelling heroine, and I loved her from the start. She’s older, relatable, and carries this mix of self-doubt and quiet strength that made rooting for her feel so natural.
The undercover storyline was one of my favorite parts. Seeing Ness step into a rebel leader’s life, trying to hold her cover together while juggling secrets, shifting loyalties, and dangerous politics. And the romantic tension was perfect!! The commander is off-limits (of course), the rebel leader is dangerously charming (of course), and the moments between them all absolutely smolder.
The magic system, the political intrigue, and the friendships woven through the story added so much richness. I especially loved watching Ness find connection again after years of loneliness.. the found-family elements hit so close to home, and seeing her slowly gain confidence and step into her power was incredibly satisfying.
What to Expect -magic + political intrigue -undercover mission vibes -forbidden romance -jealous commander energy -found family -a twist you definitely won’t see coming
It struck such a beautiful balance of action, humor, heart, and heat, and the emotional moments landed just as strongly as the romantic ones. I’m already excited for book two!!! I need more Ness, more tension, and more of this world immediately.
I had the absolute joy of reading Rebellion in the Mist by Marley Ferguson, and not only is the story incredible… the physical copy she sent me is STUNNING. Truly one of those books you want to display and reread.
This story throws Ness into a life she never planned for after trading ten years of her life for magic. Suddenly she’s not just training wielders anymore — she’s undercover, infiltrating a rebellion, pretending to be someone she’s not, and trying to survive a world full of secrets, politics, and people who are definitely more than they seem.
I loved how layered everything felt. No one is purely good or bad, loyalties blur, and every interaction had me questioning who could actually be trusted. Add in magic, rebellion stakes, and some very complicated tension between commanders and rebel leaders… and I was hooked.
And that ending? I’m already counting down to book two this fall.
If you love: ✨ political fantasy ✨ undercover/spy vibes ✨ morally gray characters ✨ slow-burn tension ✨ magic with real consequences
You’ll want this on your shelf ASAP.
Huge thank you to Marley for the beautiful copy — this one was such a treat to read 🤍 Are you a fan of rebellion + intrigue fantasy?
This is an excellent way to kick off a romantic fantasy series! It's got everything you want - found family, high stakes, plenty of tension, and a really nice balance of heart, action, humor, and just enough heartbreak to keep things interesting.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ness is a solid main character, and I really enjoyed watching her grow over the course of the book. She feels realistic - very much the kind of character who could be your friend, which made it easy to root for her.
The plot is strong, with twists I didn't see coming and others I did (in the best way) thanks to some well-done foreshadowing. It felt intentional rather than predictable.
The world-building hits that sweet spot where you feel fully immersed without ever getting pulled away from the story or bogged down in details.
Pacing-wise, this was well balanced, mixing action and quieter reflective moments nicely. We spend more time in the "before shit hits the fan" phase than I expected, but I didn't even notice until later because I was so invested.
Overall, this is an impressive debut, and I can't wait to read more of Ness's adventures.
Political intrigue served with a side of open door spice.
This romantasy is jammed packed with tropes you’ll love
Ness has spent the last decade serving the Empire. With just 5 months left of service, her life goes from being the trainer to becoming the student. When a rebel leader who shares a striking resemblance to Ness meets her end, Ness is assigned one mission: turn spy, pose as Aurora, and uncover the plans the rebels have to over throw the Empire.
There’s only one problem, she has never been trained on espionage.
Luckily shes not going alone, she has super hot OFF-LIMITS commander who will advise her along the way.
She must do what it takes In an effort to gain favor with the other rebellion leaders, even if it means seducing one of the handsome rebel leaders to get information.
As Ness begins to uncover the rebellions secrets, she comes to find out things are not always as they seem.
This book is a perfect fit if you like:
👉🏽Political Intrigue 👉🏽Found Family 👉🏽Magical Fae 👉🏽Love Triangle 👉🏽Forbidden Love 👉🏽Rebellion vs Empire 👉🏽Secret Identity
I burned through this book so fast! I really enjoyed how Marley lets you really get to know Ness throughout the book. That slow burn tension had me turning pages like a fiend!
And that ending…. Listennnn I NEED book two like yesterday.
Thank you so much Marley for gifting me this ebook copy in exchange for my honest review!
Wow, Wow, Wow!! What a book! I absolutely loved this. The premise of the story was brilliant, I loved the fact that we are not privy to anything and have to learn the role and history of Aurora and the kingdoms along with Ness.
Really liked Ness as our FMC, I thought she showed such resilience and courage when faced with really difficult tasks. She’s so selfless in everything she does. I really enjoyed her banter and laughed at her witty remarks with Ransom. Also, their chemistry was just chefs kiss😚🤌🏻
The plot twist in this book is one I absolutely did not see coming, which is not something I can say very often when reading a book! It had me at the edge of my seat and just kept on giving. You think you know one thing and then the next minute you’re questioning everything. I seriously cannot wait for book 2!!
I’d like to thank Marley Ferguson & Torch Lit PR for ARC. I have read this book voluntarily and this is my honest review.
This book comes out on 7th October 2025, don’t just walk to get it.. run!✨
Rebellion in the Mist is an impressive debut from Marley Ferguson and a strong start to what feels like a very promising series.
The story does begin a little slowly, but once it finds its footing, I could not put it down. From that point on, I was fully invested in the world and the characters.
One of my favorite aspects of this book is the world building, along with a magic system that feels thoughtful and intentional without becoming overwhelming. Ness is a compelling main character, especially as she is pushed into a role she was never trained for and forced to juggle loyalty, deception, and survival. Even toward the end, I truly did not know what decision Ness would make, which made her choice all the more satisfying.
This book balances its elements really well. The tension, relationships, and moments of humor all work together, while still leaving plenty of unanswered questions. I finished the book excited and eager for what comes next in book two.
Things I liked: -Lina & George -Secret mission -Love Triangle -Forbidden Romance -Tension -sugardrop -Aurora Borealis
Things I didn't like: -Slow moving beginning -"Don't talk about anything in the open or behind closed door in case eavesdropping" Ness- immediately does both these things -Insta-love vibes
I wasn't really sure about this book at first! The pacing of this was a little off for me, but I was intrigued by the story at around the 25% mark and glued to this story at the 75% mark. The ending was so great and really has me excited for the next installment!
Also appreciated that the FMC isn't a literal teenager 🤣 Ness still struggles with self worth and her arc was done well I think in that regard.
I liked the tension between Ransom & Ness. Very excited to see how their dynamic changes in the next book after that ending 👀
Plot twist was twisting at the end, and really had me feeling for Ness.
Thank you Marley Ferguson for an advanced e-copy of this book!!
This book eases you in at first to a world that feels pretty gray. You meet Ness, a woman made to serve the empire by teaching new students how to wield magic. She gets temporarily reassigned and something horrible happens, leading to a more permanent reassignment with people she has never met.
From there, things start to get brighter and brighter as she finds herself having to pretend to be a leader involved in a rebellion against the empire she is very loyal to. She has no idea what she is doing, and navigating everything is a real trial for her.
I don't want to give too much away, but I really enjoyed this one and the twists & turns it took! The growth of our leading lady from start to finish was very satisfying, and I found her to be really likeable straight away.
The supporting characters were a fantastic mixed bag, and just added so much extra depth.
Really looking forward to the next one!
I received an advanced copy to voluntarily review. My opinion is my own.
I was hooked from the very first page. This book had everything I love… magic 🪄 , rebellion 💪🏼, and just the right amount of romantic tension 🔥. Ness is such a strong character and you can relate to her as a main character, and watching her go undercover kept things entertaining but also stressful in the best way possible
I also love the tropes in this book from: found family, magical fae, forbidden love, and a love triangle that actually added and made the story instead of distracting from it. The romance really gave a lot of emotion without overpowering the plot, and the connections between the characters felt real.
The world building was easy to get into, had a hard time putting it down once things really picked up.
If you enjoy fantasy with action, and a touch of romance, this is definitely worth the read. 💕📚
This does not read like a debut novel. The word flow is grand. The characters are fleshed out. The story line. Well it starts slow but this is the first book in a series so some facts and characters have to be explained . Ness is a teacher of first year fae teaching the fundamentals of wielding magic. Once she leaves the classroom the excitement starts and just keeps happening in different ways. With her friends, with her job and with her travels and with her love life. There is some comedy. I laughed out loud three times. There is tragedy. Why do the good die young? There is romance. I want to know more about the tattoos. Like real life. There is more to come. Can't wait for book two
Rebellion in the Mist is Marley Ferguson’s debut novel and is a great entrance for this author.
A young fae who believes in the Empire she has lived in and worked for. A band of people ready to rebel against a king. Lies, deceit, and betrayal. All elements of a story that you can’t put down.
The story the Ferguson weaves may seem to start out a little slower than some novels of the genre, but as she reveals more of Ness’ story to the reader, the harder it becomes to put down. While I knew there would have to be a cliffhanger at the end as this is the first of the series, I was still shocked at where she left off.
I am excited to read the rest of this series as it releases and can’t wait to see how Ness grows into her own person.
This story hooked me from the beginning and the cliffhanger has me dying to get into the next book in this series.
Ness, a trainer for the Empire is almost done serving her time of duty when she’s unwillingly forced into a role of deep espionage. Tasked with uncovering possible leads of a rebel rebellion she quickly learns to follow the first rule - people will believe what you tell them. But can she believe everything she’s been told?
Rebellion in the Mist is packed with political intrigue, magic, oppressive rulers, rebellion and a slow burn fake romance. Ahh, I loved every second.
Thanks to the author for the opportunity to read the first in the series. I’m looking forward to what’s in store.
