So I did something really annoying and emailed Riley back and basically told her that. “Your book looks great but I um, kind of hate serials.” But then she said that all three installments were coming out over a 6 week period. So yes, they are serials, but it wasn’t one that was going to go on for years, they were coming out soon and mostly importantly – they were all already written.
Okay then, hit me.“There’s no rush, Cassidy. We have all night. Let me discover you.”
Oh my gosh, you guys. First of all, and most importantly to you, the book is really, really good. But secondly, Riley is pretty much awesome. You know how giddy I get when I make a new author friend and she has become one. That mostly happened because I was reading her book at 2am, totally hooked, and stopped only long enough to email her to tell her that I was loving it. And then I emailed her again, when I finished, to tell her that I flippin’ loved her, but damn it, I hated the cliffhanger (in a good way) and WHERE THE HELL IS THE SECOND BOOK?
Still, I loathe myself for the way I hurt them, especially my mom. I wish I’d broken down with a little more tact. Stupid hangover.
So woke up the next morning and her reaction to my insane middle-of-the-night ramblings was apparently to laugh hysterically and become my friend. How can you resist her?
Now, I’ll tell you – I got to read books 2 and 3 pretty quickly, so I didn’t have to wait very long. But right now ALL of the books are out, so NEITHER DO YOU. And you should read them because they’re really good. But let me focus on book 1.
We start out with Cassidy attending a concert. Or, well, trying to. That’s not the important part. The important part is that she gets into the VIP portion of the concert before the show. And that changes the course of her life. The change she makes makes the proverbial fork in the road look like a slight dalliance. But Cassidy has had a rough few months and dare I say it – she needed a change.“Uh. . . Are you hungry?”
“Yes.”
I think of the chips and salsa from earlier. “I can fix you—“
“Not for food.”
“Oh.” Oh.
The corner of his mouth quirks up. “I can’t wait to taste you.”
It’s hard for me to describe the mood of VIP because there are a lot heavy topics, some things that hurt your heart, but there are also incredibly bright moments that make you giggle and identify maybe a little too much with Cassidy.
Fucker. Could I be any worse at the sexy talk?
VIP is a great New Adult book. You really do get to travel with Cassidy in what feels like an authentic path for a character. When I was just starting out, I threw myself headlong into things, too. Some of them I look back on as the most fun I ever had and some of them, all I can do is shake my head and think “Well, I didn’t die.”“I told you there was a this.”
Of course, along Cassidy’s path we deal with what I have to describe as her frienemy (whom I’m STILL figuring out) and Gage. Oh Gage. Gage is a really awesome boyfriend. I mean, not Cassidy’s because Cassidy wouldn’t dare to call someone her boyfriend. I mean, he’s a great BOOK boyfriend and yeah, sometimes you want to grab Cassidy by the shoulders and scream “WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?” but it feels natural. Cassidy is lost and sometimes when your life is in shambles, you can’t see the life raft right in front of you.But this new thing, this thing I can’t name, it makes me nervous. It’s fragile, whatever it is. I don’t know whether to smash it to smithereens or hold it close for safekeeping.
Anyway, as I said, VIP ends in a cliffhanger. The book does give a nice, full story, but then leaves you dying for the next installment. I definitely emailed Riley saying “SHE BETTER_______________.” (I can’t tell you because that would be a spoiler. But since I’ve ready book 2, I’ll tell you she doesn’t listen to me because she’s a stubborn, stubborn girl.)
All in all, this is a great read. This is an indie published book by a new author who I see great things for in the future. She currently has VIP up *FOR* *FREE* so there is no reason you shouldn’t run straight over and one-click it and see that I’m definitely right.

"The singer breaks off form his song. I glance toward the stage, and he's poised to jump down to help the waitress, but I beat him to it. His eyes, warm, wide and brown, meet mine- pausing just long enough for that tug in my belly to slide a little lower- and he hesitantly sits back on his stool, resuming his performance."
