Four days into their honeymoon in Greece, Bernice and David Dando have yet to consummate their marriage and after having accepted his almost non-existent desire for sex throughout the relationship, Bernice finally discovers the reason; he is addicted to porn. Learning that the love of her life chooses the cheap thrill of fantasy over her is devastating but then, 'every man does it; it’s just looking, right?’ If she leaves the relationship because of virtual adultery, will she be labelled as pathological, overreacting, or even worse, frigid?
When funny, feisty, forty-something Bernice plans the adventure trip of a lifetime, she doesn’t expect to be spending it alone. But as it turns out, unintentionally contributing to a Greek fish explosion, nude karaoke and hilarious misadventures with volcanoes are exactly what she needs to stop fretting about errant husbands and really start living. But when Mr D tries to win her back, Bernice has a decision to make: is this a holiday from her humdrum life, or the start of a whole new adventure?

3.5⭐️ I mostly enjoyed this book. There are sections of lol moments including exploding fish, nudeoke and flip flop flinging mixed in with some depressing sections looking at sexual and personal feelings of inadequacy. The message of this book seems to be that you need to be happy on the inside to be happy with anyone else and that you should live each day for you.
This story is a humorous and satisfying read for both sexes. In my opinion, when you strip away the genre, there are three types of fiction: bad, good, and believable. Heather Hill has created here one of the most believable, funny and heart-warming tales I’ve read in a long time. As a writer, I read a wide range of genre, and I am critical of various aspects of the writing. In this uplifting tale, the reader is treated to good imagery, natural dialogue, superb characterisation, sense of place, and a plot that will make many honest men and women do some soul-searching. We get to know the main character Bernice through excellent first-person point of view narrative. She is attractive, but isn’t gorgeous, and she is witty, but doesn’t do a stand-up routine. She is a mother. She is honest to a fault and has hang-ups about her personality and body as she goes into her 40’s. It’s natural to think of characters like ‘Shirley Valentine’ and ‘Bridget Jones’, but Bernice is a combination of those two - on a particularly good day. I use email and telephone calls for added depth in my own work, so for me, the inclusion of Facebook entries was insightful, and they are hilarious. Although porn is the poison in the relationship, it is dealt with tastefully - no pun intended. Bernice’s love for her husband knows no bounds - or does it? That is the question posed early on, but through great writing, it isn’t answered until the end. For me, this tale ticked all the boxes, and I rate it five-star.
The blogs and Twitter posts by Heather Hill gave me a good indication of what to expect from this book. I wasn't disappointed. It's hilarious! Bernice's escapades had me in stitches, especially the moped scene...and the custard.
But of course there is a lot more to it than fun and frolics. We can, I suspect, all identify with Bernice in some way. Okay, we may not all have husbands with a porn addiction,(written well) but for instance, body issues. How many people are totally happy with how they look?
This book sees Bernice grow as a person. Heather kept me guessing right until the last page as to how this would end.
Watch out Jane Green and Helen Fielding; there is a new novelist from your side of the pond! I know Jane Green left England to live in Connecticut, USA, but; her first batch of books ring true to Heather Hill’s writing style. English writers that stick to their British adjectives, verbs and nouns, make a story so much more fantastic to read, at least for me. Solely, because I find things like “sod-off” more entertaining than our term for “said” statement…that I cannot write about without being bleeped! “The New Mrs. D” was so much fun and quick-witted to read….there was hardly a page in this novel that I did not have laugh out loud or at least giggly moments. This is my Call Sign to a great review, and recommendation for others to read this book. Bernice and David Dando get married after being together for six years. They are on the fourth day of their honeymoon in Greece, and have not had sex yet! Bernice, nicknamed “Binnie” by her husband, have registered for various excursions from artwork to scuba diving while on their honeymoon. Binnie discovers that her husband is still looking at porn, as she is dressing in serious “Sex-David-Up” lingerie; and flash forward, she seems to be on her way to a second divorce. After every excuse he can throw at her to explain is wonton need for porn…she kicks him out. Will she go back to England, or stay in Greece to assert her independence. Can she get through this muddled part of her life with any dignity? How long will she have to hide behind “cloudy” Facebook posts, etc.? This book is full of humor, humility, and self-love being unearthed. Such a fun way to suggest, that we all may need a “Honeymoon for One! My flip-flop love will never be the same. Who knew they could be weapons of mass destruction, or at least can be used as an attempt of mass destruction. Perfect Beach Bag Book!
This book starts out hilariously with pitch-perfect descriptions of multiple fiascoes that had me laughing out loud and proclaiming this author a comic genius. If only the rest had been as captivating. Sadly, the story became preachy with over the top self-discovery and self congratulations. Inexplicably, it seemed every personal change, catalyst for change or bit of discovery seemed to be followed by a syrupy narration pointing out "that was a change, a catalyst for change or a bit of discovery". She IS very funny. I particularly liked the facebook post: "'Doncha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?' - Joan of Arc, 1431"
I was looking for something lighthearted to read to distract me from real world issues and this filled that need. I can't say I found it 'hilarious' but I do struggle with a lot of comedy so this is not unusual for me. This would be good for reading on vacation.
If you are looking for an entertaining chick lit / romantic comedy that will keep you in stitches, then The New Mrs D is the book for you!
In her debut novel, author Heather Hill weaves a cheeky tale that follows forty-one year old newlywed Bernice Dando's journey of self discovery while on her honeymoon in Greece. Told in the first person narrative, Bernice aka "Binnie" takes the reader along for the ride as she calls a halt to her honeymoon after four days when she discovers that her husband David is addicted to porn, and they still haven't consummated their marriage! What's a woman to do when she isn't getting any loving? Why kick him out and continue the honeymoon plans without him of course!
Follow along as Binnie embarks on a madcap midlife crisis adventure in Greece, getting herself into some pretty hilarious circumstances, and along the way she discovers her true self. Binnie is beside herself when hubby David is addicted to watching porn on his phone instead of making love to her. She has had a history of self-image, self-doubt, and insecurity issues that goes back to her childhood. With a mixture of humor and drama, the reader can't help but get drawn into Binnie's adventure as she gallivants around the picturesque Isle of Greece. Throughout the story Binnie has flashbacks to her past intertwined with her crazy antics in the present, you can't help but feel empathy for the way her life has turned out, yet you can't help but also snicker as her zany antics provide a lot of comedic laugh out loud moments. And just when you think that Binnie is finally figuring out what she wants in her life, hubby David comes back into the picture and wants her back!
I really enjoyed following The New Mrs D's poignant personal journey of self-discovery. It was easy to relate to Binnie because of the real life issues that she struggled with, and to cheer her on as her wit and sassy personality pulled her through as she overcame her fears and insecurities. Through Binnie's adventures, the author provides a thought provoking and truly inspirational message for the readers: learn to accept and love yourself, flaws and all!

Summer holiday mature chick lit... Bernice is on her honeymoon in Greece. It's her second marriage, and she has two grown up daughters. The problem is that her husband, David, loves her but doesn't fancy her - several days into the holiday they still haven't had sex - he's been getting his kicks from porn websites. Oh, and he had a picture of four of her bikini clad friends in his wallet. Not Bernice, just her friends...
Bernice decides she can't take it any more, and will spend the rest of the holiday alone. She meets up with David's friend Chris, an artist who lives nearby, and makes several new friends.
This is a smart, well written, lighthearted-with-serious-undertones sort of book, and I enjoyed the Greek holiday atmosphere. I thought the whole subject of Bernice's dilemma was most interesting; her relationship with her mother that led to the low self-esteem, that led to her making a first unwise marriage, then becoming a Facebook 'friend' of the woman for whom Husband #1 left her, and, finally, marrying a man who didn't want to sleep with her. I think many women would be able to relate to Bernice's tendency to 'people please', which in itself had a detrimental effect on her self-esteem, but I wondered if the story might have been better suited to a slightly edgy, contemporary drama, rather than chick lit mode, with all its zany incidents - I do sometimes wonder if anyone's ever written a chick lit heroine who isn't ludicrously accident prone!
I was pleased that the ending wasn't predictable (I liked it alot, it made me smile!), and I thought the message of the book, about learning to love and accept yourself, was sincerely and sympathetically executed. The whole thing was a bit too 'whoo-hoo, you go girl, let's all be sassy real women' for me (and a bit too naked), but that's only personal taste; Bernice and her new friends were appealing characters and I think this book will appeal to many women. I can imagine it being an inspiration to others caught in the low self-esteem trap; haven't most of us been there at some point?
What a great story! I so enjoyed watching Bernice grow more confident and self-assured as the story unfolded. And the hilarious situations she found herself in...I laughed so hard!
Bernice is a very realistic character, and you can't help but feel for her. Who expects their marriage to be over on their honeymoon, after all? I enjoyed reading her various Facebook entries, where she was trying to put on a brave sense and not let anyone at home know that her husband isn't with her.
Porn addiction is a very serious issue, and the author handles it in a tasteful, honest, well-written way. The same is true with the body issues Bernice deals with throughout the book.
I enjoyed that the author stayed true to Bernice language-wise, as well, using British vocabulary throughout. I admit to having to look some of the slang up, but that was fine with me. I'm a huge fan of their way of speaking--even though it is so closely related to our own, it seems so much more sophisticated.
Another great debut novel from 2015. I certainly hope Ms. Hill will grace us with more of her work in 2016.
It's safe to say I'm not the target demographic for The new Mrs D but that didn't stop me from really enjoying the book. In it we follow the eponymous Mrs D. as she embarks on what she thinks is the start of her honeymoon but soon becomes a voyage of self-discovery. While I may not have been able to relate to the main character directly myself, I know a number of people that share some of her characteristics and it didn't take long to get sucked into her adventures. While reading I smiled a lot, even laughing out loud on occasion.
The book generally has the light touch but Hill isn't afraid to explore some tougher themes in an open and honest way. For the most part, though, it stays true to its roots - a good, light-hearted comedy. Yes, the plot is heavily signposted at times, there are one or two clichéd characters and the story occasionally strays into the area of cheese, but this is cheese in a good way, like Dirty Dancing or Abba Gold. If you enjoyed Bridget Jones or Shirley Valentine then this is the ideal holiday read for you. Highly recommended.
The New Mrs D is a humorous tale set in Greece. Bernice Dando is on her honeymoon, but is disappointed when her marriage hasn't yet been consummated and when she discovers her husband hasn't given up his porn addiction, she send him packing. This isn't a new discovery for her, they've been together for a number of years and she's tried to help him deal with this. In fact she should have gone into the marriage with open eyes, she just falsely imagined she would be the one to cure and change him.
Bernice decides to take hold of her own destiny in a Shirley Valentine moment and stay in Greece finding adventure amongst new friends and nude karaoke whilst updating her facebook page for the benefit of those back home. But when the honeymoon holiday comes to an end will she take Mr D back or continue with her new found life?
I like books that set out to make you laugh - even if they're sometimes hard to find! There's lots to like about The New Mrs D - funny characters, funny lines and funny situations.
Main character Binnie, sorry Bernice, is totally believable and even if some of her antics are extraordinary, you can't help but root for her. I also really enjoyed her group of friends, none stereotypical and all amusing in their own way.
The writing style is unique and puts you right into Bernice's head. From there you experience her great story in beautiful surroundings. I now want to go back to Greece immediately.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
When I first read the teaser for this book, I wasn't sure how I'd end up liking it since I don't fit the target audience. I'm not in the age demographic, I'm not previously divorced and no kids, I really don't share much with the main character. That said, I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this book and how much I laughed! The author has a true talent for creating humour in her writing, and her characters, despite Bernice being above and beyond clumsy, felt genuine.
This is a book I can see myself coming back to and reading again. I look forward to reading more from this author!
What a ride! Heather Hill takes a difficult and almost taboo subject—porn addiction—and by couching it in humor, makes it approachable and even more importantly, open for comfortable discussion. Her scenes of zany, madcap situation comedy are interspersed with deep and relevant discourse between Bernice and her new girlfriends. Discussing their worth as women and how body image can be such a prison. A truly enjoyable read by a talented author. I look forward to reading more of Hill's works.
This was a book that I was sneaking off for a quick read of whenever I had a spare moment. Not only is it hilarious, but it's also a deeply poignant and resonant read for any woman who finds herself at fortysomething having lost her sense of self along the way. It's well written, with engaging characters and a heroine who is not only funny but who comes armed with a rapier wit. Glorious, liberating and a fabulous read. British comedy writing has a new star.
I wasn't really sure what to expect when I started this read especially the accents as written in the story. Quite a bit to laugh about, applaud and cringe. Bernice is on her honeymoon but her husband has an addiction that she is struggling to get past. I love all the things Bernice does on her own, making new friends and quite a few assumptions. what an incredible journey
This book is great! It had me laughing out loud more times than I could count. It was a perfect read and just what I needed on a dreary winter day. Sunny Greece, hot men, a klutzy woman alone on her honeymoon, a sympathetic male friend, and topless horseback riding - what's not to like?! I hope Heather Hill writes more just like this - and quickly!
I really didn't know what to expect from this book, but I will say it left me actually feeling a bit inspired. The main character starts out as a doormat, but finds herself. The ending did not take the expected route at all, and I liked that a lot. I think it was self-published, and it could have done with an editorial read-through as I spotted some missing quotation marks, at least one missing paragraph break, and one embarrassing wrong use of a homonym (which I have since forgotten). (Also, if you're going to include a character from a region that you are not from, get someone from that region to read those parts for you as a check; i.e. Americans don't say something's worth "millions of pounds," particularly while in Greece). But definitely a worthwhile, light, silly read with a deeper message to take to heart.
Actually... I think is a 3.5. Is a good easy to read novel about self appreciation and loving yourself.for who you are..It has some over the top situations and made me laugh... some other philosophical conversations a little too philosophical for my taste.. but over all the final message is worth reading.. at least I valued it... maybe I'll give it 4 stars.. I'll sleep on it 😉
P.S... slept on it... keeping the 3 stars...(spoiler alert?) Some fairly predictable parts like Chrisss anyone?? And didn't really get why nearly the end she did some things...
This is a must read for any man interested in learning a bit about how a women thinks! As for me, I didn't want to put it down and I found myself grinning page after page. For a few hours I was able to escape to another life, blissfully taking on the identity of the books main character. Although I'm still smiling I am sad the book ended. I'm anxious to read more by this author. Thank you, Heather Hill for sharing your talent with the world and enabling me to escape my mundane life for a few hours lost in your words.
It was an ok kind of book. I read it because I wanted a bit of relief from some of the dark books that I'd been reading recently and it did the trick. It did make me laugh at times, but then at other times the humour and repetition got on my nerves. Ok for a bit of light reading, but the ending left me dissatisfied and I didn't feel that the serious subject of porn addiction was handled in a serious or mature way.
Funny and a bit sappy chick lit. I am not a huge fan of chick lit but this was amusing and is definitely a feel good story once you wade through the angst. I felt bad for her but she blindly dove I to a marriage knowing her new husband had issues. It was really depressing reading her low self worth and indecision. Not a fan of the ending and was really routing for her to fall for one guy but I won't spoil it for you.
I'm surprised by how much I liked this book. It got off to a rocky start with me. Mostly because my American brain did not always grasp the British slang and sense of humor. The main character, Binnie/Bernice, is a walking accident. Clumsy at all times. It got tiresome to figure out what the author was trying to describe every time she did something ridiculously clumsy. Picture a middle age female Steve Urkel. Despite all of this, this story had some very poignant moments that pulled at my heartstrings. I liked how the author would shift to a different scene during Binnie's sad moments. I think we all have moments where we are not quite present and are remember some trauma from our past that keeps us from living in the moment. This book was a story of a woman discovering her own worth and falling in love with herself on her own terms. That's what I loved most about it.
I was promised hilarity, bawdy Brit humour, a woman finding herself... only her awkwardness went on forever, largely because she wouldn't take no for an answer, and her wishy washiness about the cheating man in her life pissed me off.
There were some pithy moments with the ladies supporting each other but damn, Bernice, you're still trying too hard.
The story is good, if a little crass in places. A nice array of self discovery and female empowerment. However some of the characters were a bit 2-D. With a formatting hat on, this really lets it down and makes it difficult to read. 8 words run into one with no spaces, full of typos. I wish more care had been taken to make it a better reading experience.
This book is touching, funny and refreshing. How often are book written about the unachievable, the unattainable? This is a warm story with a character who is real and flawed. Read it and enjoy.
The problem in my long marriage was different. In our 20th year he started drinking and seeking intimate encounters in the bars. We always had a good relationship, so I never figured it out the real problem. I stayed 4 more years and left.
