Anne Hampson was born on 28 November 1928 in England. At age six she had two ambitions: to teach and to write. Poverty after WWI deprived her of an education and at 14 she was making Marks & Spencer's blouses at one shilling (5p) each.
She retired when she married. Later, when her marriage broke up, she was homeless with £40 in her purse. She went back to the rag trade and lived in a tiny caravan. But she never forgot her two ambitions, and when Manchester University decided to trial older women she applied, and three years later had achieved one ambition, so set her thoughts on number two.
In 1969, her first novel, Eternal Summer, was accepted five days from posting and she soon had a contract for 12 more. From the caravan she went to a small stately home, drove a Mercedes and sailed on the QE2. From the first book, came over 125 more written for Mills & Boon, Harlequin and Silhouette. Alan Boon (the Boon of Mills & Boon) and she came up with the title for 'Harlequin Presents' over lunch at the Ritz. She suggested to Alan that they have a historical series. He told her to write one - it was done in a month, entitled Eleanor and the Marquis under the pseudonym Jane Wilby. She has the distinction of being number one in Harlequin Presents, Masquerade and Silhouette. Many of "Presents" have been reprinted many times (some as many as 16) and are now fetching up to $55, being classed as "rare" books.
She has had 3 awards, one at the World Trade Centre where she received a standing ovation from her American fans, who had come from many states just to meet her.
She was retired, but in 2005 she wrote two romance and crime novels, both of which were published by Severn House.
She passed away on 25 September 2014. She has been written her autobiography, entitled Fate Was My Friend.
My first question about this story was about the cover. Why does Melissa Gilbert have birds all over her face? Second was: which 70's actor does the hero look like?
Neither question was answered in reading this book.
The question answered was which horrible sister will win the dubious prize of their stepbrother? Will it be the one who wears gold lame in the Outback? Or the one who slaves in the kitchen, gets lost in the wilderness, and notices the beauty of her surroundings?
Lol. We all know the answer. I laughed my way through this one as only one of the sisters changed her evil, selfish ways through punishing labor (and kisses). And the other got off scott-free. I don't know why AH didn't show us her sulky reaction to losing. But I imagine she will land on her pedicured feet and return to periodically torture the H/h.
As for the heroine - I honestly don't think she has permanently outgrown her lying, selfish ways. They are in abeyance until she runs off, only to change her mind. She will die in a plane crash returning to the hero. This will leave her bitter child to be a next-generation hero. *happy sigh*
When will I learn to believe my fellow Goodread reviewers!
I don't even know where to go with this. Two entitled and conniving sisters are sent Down Under to learn a lesson. Well, one learns how to dump her work on her younger, dumber sister and make goo goo eyes at their stepbrother, and the dim one learns to grovel and lie and unsuccessfully make unrequited goo goo eyes with the stepbrother. Waste of oxygen is putting it kindly.
And the hero!!!! The H kisses both sisters, 🤢, and somehow, someway says he is in love with the heroine on the next to last page. Whew, glad you got that under the wire at the last minute Miss Hampson. Unfortunately, we are denied the scream of rage from the evil older sister when she finds out that the H loves her little sis. Hard one to swallow as he's been belittling her for 184 pages, but what am I thinking? This is a 1970s HP. Had to take a page from the hero, and scornfully laugh when he suggests the heroine will want her sister as a bridesmaid. Don't think that's gonna happen.
Anne Hampson + shrew-taming = toxic H, terrible or annoying behavior from everyone. Just don't read it. When Hampson's H's feel like they are justified in teaching spoiled h's a lesson, things are going to get ugly.
And at the end of the book he suddenly declares his love for her (I don’t know where that came from because he was looking at her sister all the time and he was belittling her) and she doesn’t even dare to ask why he kissed her sister.
Uggh. This is so bad. His love declaration was not convincing at all. She should have questioned him. The ending was rushed.
A delightful story. Since the death of their mother, Tina and Moira have been spoiled and indulged by their stepfather Austin. But the man sees for himself that this must stop. So he agrees to his son’s suggestion (the H, Charles) that both girls are going to spent one year in Charles’s outback station in Australia where the girls are going to work hard and learnt the value of money. So both girls travel to the station and while Tina performs exhausting chores in the kitchen, Moira gets around with a duster doing very little and then goes to her room to rest, while Tina works long hours. So after sometime, it becomes evident that Tina is loosing weight and looking exhausted. And she begins to feel jealous of her sister Moira and her blooming relationship with Charles, as one day she sees them kissing in the moonlight. Little by little, Tina realizes she is much attracted to Charles, while he only seems to be interested in her sister Moira. After this, Tina is so distraught that she decides she must get out of this impossible situation. The opportunity seems to come at hand, when she learns that their stepfather Austin is going to pay them a visit. Thus she manipulates everything to look a real fright when Austin arrives and he decides Tina is not going to stay in the station but come back with him to the UK. But Tina’s plan backfires on her, when the whole situation creates annoyance and enemity between father and son. Charles is very angry with Tina and tells her she is the one responsible for his estrangement with his father. She realizes she must contribute to peace between father and son and begins her campaign near Austin telling him of her deceitfulness and how she has manipulated the whole situation. And while we read, we feel compassion for Tina and her difficult situation, when Moira tells Tina she is going to marry Charles in the near future. How can Tina win Charles’s love?
I liked the novel, it was enjoyable but I was shocked that Moira never paid for her crimes. It was like she got away with her lies and manipulations, which made me a bit angry. I can't believe how two sisters could be so similar but different at the same time.
I guess it’s a bit embarrassing, but I do enjoy a story where the heroine repents at length and is even given a good cold shoulder by the H. This book had both, she did suffer, but I thought that the H didn’t trust her for too long and something ended up lacking here.
I couldn’t put the book down and finished it late at night . I liked the angst but I was disappointed. As usual the ending spoiled it for me. The heroine who was immature and conniving is one thing. I could accept that she evolved. She felt she was the scorned woman. But the H! He wasn’t blameless. I didn’t buy the explanation for his actions. It wasn’t convincing to me. It seemed logical that he played favorites because he fancied one girl and was prejudiced against the other. If he started to be interested in the heroine why was he lovey dovey with her sister? When exactly did he start to take notice of the heroine? The flirting and kissing Moira added lots of angst and heartache then it was brushed off as unimportant. If only the author dealt with the issue and the H was regretful enough ... As it was the ending was rushed and hard to believe.
For years Tina and her sister Moira had been spoiled and indulged by their stepfather Austin. Everything they wanted, he gave them; there was never any question of either of them earning their own living. So when the girls decided they would like a holiday in Menorca they took it for granted that Austin would finance them as usual.
But suddenly things took an unexpected and dramatic turn, when Austin's son Charles appeared on the scene. Charles had never approved of his frivolous stepsisters and their idle ways. He decided things had gone quite far enough, and he announced his own plans for the girls' future; they were to go, not to Menorca or anywhere like it, but to his huge station in the Australian Outback, to do some work for a change and grow up.
And Charles was to change both girls' lives in more ways than one . .
I read this properly maybe a decade ago, and only skimmed this time. The h Tina is definitely a spoiled brat, and the author didn't sugarcoat it. This is also a May-December romance as the h is 19 and the H 33. I'm not sure I am okay with how the H flirted with the OW aka the h's wicked sister Moira. HEA with some grey areas: the h was still uncomfortable about confronting the H's behavior with her sister.
The hero had it in for the H before she got to his ranch.he made a difference between sisters Even his guest noticed yet the H says he wasn’t guilty of treating her badly All through the story til the last few pages really (he was) he never apologized she took all the blame
I could not finish this book. I don’t mean that I didn’t finish. It is that I could not keep going even though I took antacids, Excedrin, migraine, and cold showers. I didn’t like anybody in the story. it was a waste of time.
