⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ All Things Undone by Chené Lawson
Afrofuturist prophecy meets supernatural revolution in this electrifying audio drama.

From the moment the eclipse hits 1850s Mississippi, All Things Undone launches into a bold reimagining of history—where the enslaved rise, the oppressed awaken, and the Earth itself begins to shift. Mirabelle, a young woman surviving the brutality of slavery, becomes the reluctant heroine of a cosmic upheaval. And when Black bodies become unkillable, the story doesn’t just rewrite power—it redefines destiny.

Lawson’s writing is vivid and cinematic, and the full-cast performance adds layers of emotional depth and urgency. The voice acting—from Tacuma Baye to JoNell Kennedy and beyond—is immersive, with standout moments that feel like sonic punches to the gut. The sound design and score elevate the tension, making each episode feel like a chapter in a mythic saga.

What makes All Things Undone so compelling isn’t just its action-packed pacing (though there’s plenty of that). It’s the way it blends speculative fiction with historical trauma, turning prophecy into resistance and survival into transformation. The stakes are high, the villains are relentless, and the eclipse is only the beginning.

Verdict:
A thrilling, genre-bending ride that’s equal parts X-Men, Kindred, and Lord of the Rings—but unapologetically rooted in Black history and Afrofuturist imagination. Very entertaining, action-packed, and absolutely begging for a sequel. Can’t wait for more.

Happy reading 📚

A book that had me totally gripped and full of emotion, I have never read something like this before.

In 1850s Mississippi, a young enslaved woman named Mirabelle barely survives day to day, praying for a better life.
Then, a solar eclipse envelops the world in an eerie glow. Suddenly, not only Mirabelle but all Black people become virtually unkillable. The enslaved throw off their shackles. And all that was is now–undone. But evil will always find a way. So it falls on Mirabelle and her allies to outrun their enemies and unlock the secrets of an ages-old prophecy.

This was a reading experience unlike anything else. With a full cast, music, and dramatic audio we were inserted into this story instantly and it played out in my head like a movie. The performances during the audio were fantastic full of emotion and intensity that truly had gripped and emotionally invested. Mirabelle is a character that I found so incredibly easy to get behind with her strength, heart and power honestly feeling so special. The story overall was so incredibly powerful and when we look at todays current world its scary to realise just how much this book set in the 1850s felt so personal.

Lawsons writing was not only gripping emotionally but felt so real. You can listen to this and know that so much went into this book and the audio of it. The cast, the performances, the drama, sound effects and music, it played out like a film while also placing us as the reader in the mix of things. These powerful performances were so well executed I could feel the fear, the anger, the built up emotions of years of oppression and violence.

The supernatural element, the historical facts and the well developed characters made this a special read I would highly recommend.

All Things Undone – Chené Lawson (Audible Original)

This audiobook didn’t work for me. What could have been a profound reflection on slavery and freedom felt instead like a revenge fantasy, where the oppressed become immortal and inflict even greater suffering on their former masters — almost a kind of reverse racism disguised as mystical empowerment.

Lawson tries to blend history, prophecy, and supernatural powers to speak about redemption and awakening, but the mix turns chaotic. The narrative becomes overloaded with ideas, losing both emotional clarity and narrative focus.

I think the message she wanted to convey is that true freedom requires inner transformation as much as external change. Unfortunately, it gets buried under layers of confusion and symbolic excess.

Probably the worst audiobook I’ve listened to this year.
They say you shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth… but this one — terrible. 🐴📚

Listened to the audible version.

Hopes were high. Felt a little overly theatrical at points, mainly the music (they really loved that didgeridoo). Started as a slave rebellion turned mythical quest, love both but ended up feeling a bit directionless. Like any “but what if this happened?” that got thrown on the board when story mapping got used. Just felt messy and overly complicated?

Interesting story I read on audible. It’s about black people gaining immortality and fulfilling a magical destiny. It had a big cast and music. It was a bit over produced for me. I struggled with the accents and the music in the background was too loud making it hard to understand what was going on at times.

I wasted a couple of hours hoping it would get better but it failed to, in fact it got worse.
The production was poor as the sounds frequently made the dialogue difficult to understand.
Don’t waste your time too.

Not what I thought...

It started strong but drifted. I'm not a fan of alternative history books. This one also contained a little too much violence for my taste. That's what people want in a novel.

In summary, this might be good for some but not for me.

The performance was good by the actors but the story was really weird. So I would give it a two for the story and a five for the narration so it equals out to a three.

Gripping. Original. A prophecy - the powerless inherit the earth. Or at least get a pretty good chance to be free of their oppressors.

This is the best 5 hours of my life, listen to the audio, the sound effects, the voice actors, perfect. I’m keeping this in my library. To listen again.
