Advent is the season of the Christian Year that begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. It is a time for celebrating Jesus as the light of the world.
Author Dean Summers says, "Advent was never part of my family’s religious tradition. But we gave it a try to see if it could slow down December to allow us to savor the Christmas season. It did! And we have been celebrating Advent ever since. Advent the book is a little package of readings, songs, meditations, and prayers from my family to yours. In it, you will find a simple, meaningful way to celebrate Advent with your family and friends."

The days between Thanksgiving and Christmas can go by in a blur of frenzied holiday activities and frantic holiday shopping. Christmas itself can be a letdown. Back when our kids were little, my wife and I discovered a way to slow down the days of December so we could savor the Christmas Season and Christmas Day.
Our family would gather each evening at suppertime and we would begin the meal by lighting the candles of an Advent wreath. We would read a Bible verse and sing a verse of a favorite Christmas carol. Each night we would focus on a part of the world to recall what we were hearing in the news about the troubles there and to pray for God to bring hope and healing to the people there.
