Cass Manning is a serial monogamist, grad student, and identical twin to Paul, a drug-addicted prostitute. Fleeing his unfaithful boyfriend, Cass returns to Houston after years away only to be drawn into danger before he's out of the airport.
When Paul dies under suspicious circumstances, Cass must rely on one of Paul's clients, Kilo, a mercenary willing to protect Cass in exchange for sex. Together they have a chance to bring justice to the corrupt heart of Texas's political power structure, but Kilo's mysterious past may tear him from Cass when he needs him most. Even if they outlive their untouchable adversaries, how does a polite academic find lasting love with a soldier of fortune?

For me, this is an alpha bodyguard/mercenary/protector story done right. The story was exciting, the emotions felt genuine, and the sex was scorching hot. Many times I think these alpha protector books get so wrapped up in the aloofness and opacity of their antiheros that plot, clarity, and common sense go out the window. Not this book! I always understood what Cass and Kilo were feeling, what they wanted, and their goals. Zero At the Bone is the best comparison I can come up with, which for me is high praise because that book did everything right. Sure, there's some instalust and even instalove here, and the ending fell strangely flat after the excitement of what came before, but none of that lowered my opinion of this well-done story.
This is just all over the place. There have been so many inconsistencies in less than 1/4 of the book that I'd drive myself up the wall if I continued reading this.
And maybe a little less sex would make sense considering someone is trying to kill you and just killed your brother?
Plus, everyone talks in fragments of sentences. Like, not everyone drops the article at the start of a sentence, so reading it line after line is annoying.
This is kind of a weird book that I’m not sure how to characterize. It’s a shoot ‘em up action style story with a lot of hot sex but the actual plot is convoluted and totally unbelievable. I can get behind a book that needs considerable suspension of disbelief, but Gemini stretches it too far. To accept the sequence of actions and villains in the plot, the good guys don’t come across so well. It’s certainly an attention grabber and I think for those readers that are instantly engaged and absorbed, the flaws may not matter. But as soon as the flaws are noticed, I think it’s a downhill ride to an unsatisfying finish unfortunately.
Cass found his current boyfriend in bed with his female best friend so he hopped a plane from England back home to Texas. His twin brother, Paul, lives there and although the two are estranged Cass can’t think of anywhere else to go. Things start to go wrong almost immediately as Cass gets nearly accosted in the airport restroom and his twin isn’t happy to see him at all. Paul has gotten himself into some real trouble and he refuses to talk about it sober. He promises to tell Cass everything once he’s shot some heroin but dies on the bathroom floor from a bad batch while Cass is in the shower. Unable to revive Paul and scared to call the police, Cass is at a loss what to do. Thankfully Paul’s customer Kilo, a mercenary for hire with a strange loyalty to druggie hooker Paul, shows up and he and Cass get it on immediately. Then the two run off to hide from the goons trying to now kill Cass.
So for starters the entire plot is pretty ridiculous. The governor of Texas is a client of Paul’s but now wants to kill Cass because … well I don’t think the story ever says why Cass needs to die. There’s a subplot about some kids in a juvenile detention center that are being molested by some richy rich brothers who get the ok from the governor and Paul told a reporter about the issue. The reporter is killed, Paul is given bad drugs and I guess they want to kill Cass because why not. Kilo is the only thing keeping Cass alive and since the two have sex with Paul’s barely dead body on the bathroom floor next to them, it’s safe to say they don’t really care what the reason is as long as they get to have more sex. Which leads to this long and convoluted hiding game where they hide out in Kilo’s nearby safe house, have sex, wander the internet and plan the downfall of the governor.
It’s weird honestly. I liked the individual characters and even Cass and Kilo together have some incredibly hot sex, that alley scene is enough to set the book on fire, but there’s just no real purpose to the whole thing. It’s like the story kept throwing in ideas without having a fleshed out map of the various bad guys and how it all fit together. Then the ending is so over the top I literally laughed out loud on a crowded plane I couldn’t help myself. But it’s not that the story is so horribly written is awful. It’s not. Both authors know how to write some great mystery and action stories. Not to mention sometimes I choose books by this duo because I know the sex scenes will always be amazing. When reading though, it feels as though the plot got away from the authors and even with solid characters and great chemistry it couldn’t quite make up for the octopus like tangents that went nowhere or were resolved with super convenient coincidences.
I think this could be a hit with the right reader that wants some non-stop action, a lot of sex, and isn’t fussy about the details and how it all fits together. It’s not horrible but I was left wondering how that entire book happened and again… why Cass never even cried about his twin OD’ing. I never could quite get over that neither Kilo nor Cass seemed to mourn Paul even though they both supposedly loved him so much. Either it’s a flaw in the characters themselves or the story for not explaining that and a thousand other confusing points regarding the plot. Suffice it to say I would not recommend or re-read this one but for the right reader, maybe it’ll work.
Oh, this well-written book grabbed me immediately and didn't let go until I had read every page! I was instantly drawn to the characters, especially the mercenary Kilo, who saves Cass after he ends up targeted by the evil men his twin brother Paul were involved with. Kilo had far more personality, emotion, and- dare, I say?- sensitivity than the typical uber-masculine character so common in romance novels, but also totally pulled off being an uber-masculine bad boy mercenary. He felt like a real person, and I also liked Cass as a character too though he was less contradictory. Both were scarred by their past lives, and were fleshed-out realistically as individuals. That being said, most of the events in the book did not seem that realistic, and the characters' connection leaned toward the insta-love variety. I don't want to give anything away so I will just say that while perhaps unrealistic, the events of the story kept me eager to find out what happened next. Thank you to the authors for an enjoyable and absorbing read and I will keep an eye out for more of your books in the future!
This was a really absorbing read. I was glued to the book and nothing was going to get in my way of finishing to find out how the mc's would be able to get out of the situation they were in to get the HEA I love so much in my stories! Sometimes in books where there are a lot of sexual scenes it can get a bit tedious but these authors know how to keep it interesting and I didn't feel that any was gratuitous ;), I thought 'bring it on' every time. There was nothing cheesy about this book, even though they had intense feelings pretty quick. They were flawed in ways that made you feel so much for them. Double thumbs up for this book! Oh, if you enjoyed 'Zero At The Bone' then this book will be right up your alley.
The characters on their own are fine. It is the story they are given and the structure of that story that did not resonate with me. I did not find the story line itself explained well. While there is a conspiracy and what exactly is going on has to unravel during the story, there is not enough information given to actually want to follow along on the journey. There were many times during the reading of this book that I could have put it down as I had no connection or interest in what would happen to the characters.
When Kilo and Cass meet, they are in bed immediately. That’s fine. I have no problem with that. It was that Paul, Cass’s brother, is lying dead on the bathroom floor during this first encounter. Then, with more dead bodies outside and a visible hitman after them, round two takes place just a short time after that in an alley with all kinds of claiming going on by Kilo over Cass. They just met, people are shooting at them, and Kilo is supposed to be the best of the best as far as keeping people safe. The sex scenes on their own are well written and had heat, but I had to take them out of context to appreciate that aspect. It then descends into a story that is hard to follow. Cass just happens to show up when crap is coming down on Paul, It’s too convenient that Cass walks into a public restroom at the exact precise time that he did. Characters are mentioned and introduced and by the end of the story there are so many questions as to how everyone and everything ties together because it’s just not made clear.
This author team is a definite guilty pleasure for me, so I was super excited to see this new release! I loved the relationship between the two main characters, but a lot of other parts I just wasn't feeling. So, 3 stars and I'll be looking forward to the next collaboration.
Had me hooked from the start and on the edge all the way through
Excellent! A gritty story that doesn't start with love (for either character) but slowly and surely works its way up to it, this book had me hanging on to every word from the beginning.
Cass comes home, well runs home, after a break up gone bad to see his twin brother. On the way he is accosted by one of his twin's clients, as Paul is an 'escort', but he runs away. This brings trouble down on Paul and Cass, where there is already no love lost, causing Paul to call in a mercenary he knows, Kilo. Before Kilo can get there Paul is murderer, and for what he may know Cass finds himself firmly in the crosshairs as well. Cass has to run with Kilo who only asks for one thing in exchange- full access to his body.
Everything starts off rough in this. From the relationship with Paul and Cass, to initial meeting between Cass and Kilo, there is no sweetness or evidence of deeper caring. Their backgrounds have lead them each to be a bit broken when it comes to love, and it shows in the things they do. Cass and Kilo have to work through not only their own reluctance towards love and how love has been shown in their lives, but also what Paul was involved in and how to dig themselves out of the mess. It was a tense and emotionally fraught book which kept me hooked.
While the whole book was great, I was especially impressed with the ending. Not everyone can pull off closing the book on the story told, while still leaving life open ended after. Not to mention making it clear that the events being done doesn't mean the MCs would feel that it was mentally over. But this book did that with perfection, bringing all that happened to light while letting us see what more could be had. Beautifully done!
Cass finds out his boyfriend is cheating with his best friend. He grabs the essentials and heads home to find the only family he has left his twin Paul. The problem, he doesn't have a home anymore and Paul and Cass haven't been close since their parents divorce years ago.
Cass and Paul get caught in the middle of some dangerous games that powerful men have going. When Paul calls a friend, Kilo, for help and then is murdered it sets a chain reaction in motion. Cass has to decide who to trust and where to turn for answers as his life still hangs in the balance.
Cass was a regular guy who got caught up in events that he wasn't equipped to handle. Kilo was a man living on the run and outside the law. Should Cass put his faith and his life in the hands of a man who had so many secrets of his own. The chemistry was hot between these two but was that connection enough to sustain them in the face of so much danger.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked both mcs and I could feel the spark that ignited from the first moment they meet. The action kept me on the edge of my seat but was not the sole focus of this story. There was time given to get to know these men and become entwined in their lives and to want them to find a way out and the hope of a future. Highly recommended.
New to me authors. Enthralling storyline. I found some of the dialogue off. Kilo would say something, missing some word or other which would make me pause and have to re read the sentence to grasp what he was saying. This might have been intentional to give some colloquialism speak, but reading the sentence is a lot different to hearing it. Another thing I thought unnecessary was some high brow words used (which might have someone needing to find a dictionary) instead of some more equally descriptive words without being basic english. It was as if they thought “how many unusual words can we use to look intelligent”. Apart from all this I did enjoy the book and will read more from these two authors.
Reminds me of the m/m classic fav Shattered Glass. The same insta-lust/insta-obsession. And unfortunately the same dark themes including backstory with rape, underage prostitution, threats of rape and gang rape, corruption tied to all of this etc...Shattered Glass made it work somehow with the rare talent of Dani Alexander, and a heavy dose of humor of all things. Gemini is just too sad for me.
This book is a thrill ride of an action story with characters that are flawed, complex and so well written. This book grips you in the first page then flings you headfirst into a wonderful read, I don't recommend starting this in an evening as you won't want to put it down, but I would recommend to anyone who loved a thrill.
Cass heads to his twin brother Paul’s city after finding his boyfriend cheating on him. What he finds is a drugged out version of the brother he’s always known. Who overdoses the night after his arrival. Cass is thrust into all the trouble Paul has gotten himself into. Lucky for Cass Paul contacted one of his John’s who is former military turned mercenary before he was murdered .
Kilo makes quite the first impression when he shows up and essentially ravages a confused but totally willing Cass. I actually loved this scene. It could have been weird but was totally hot. Kilo knows Cass isn’t Paul since Paul wasn’t the nicest guy. Cass is for sure the nice twin. Kilo agrees to help Cass get out of his trouble but things prove to be bigger than either man initially believed.
Despite the quick start to their relationship I did enjoy the couple. It kind of worked considering the trouble they’re thrust into. Danger is exciting and the guys had chemistry. Cass was just dumped and in a life and death situation. Kilo wants to be needed. They both just stumble onto each other and it works. There’s no promises made because neither man knows how this is going to play out. Also they come from VERY opposite places in life. Cass has been in school his entire life. Kilo has his own secrets. The kind you don’t tell to anyone you don’t trust with your life.
Now for the part that didn’t work so well for me. The baddies. They were OTT awful once on page. Yes you should hate them but they made me cringe at times. They didn’t have much page time thank fully. That may sound harsh but they had a more realistic impact before the big ending.
For the most part I enjoyed the book because the couple and their struggles kept me hooked. I’d say if you like an opposites attract story you’d like this. Or if you just enjoy tough men who really want love. I liked it.
Mystery, intrigue, murder, mayhem – this book had all of that and more. From the initial call for help until the final pages, I was glued to the story through the twists and turns that had my rapt attention.
Cass and Kilo couldn’t be more different. The pairing of a nerdy grad student with a mercenary for hire is definitely a pretty strong example of “opposites attract”, and in their case, Cass and Kilo had fantastic chemistry instantaneously. They had a bit of a dubious start that could call any relationship into question, but the authors did a great job of convincing me they had something that could really work out in the end. I didn’t know exactly how that was going to happen, but I was definitely rooting for them.
Speaking of opposites, Cass and his twin brother Paul were also as different as night and day. Cass is the upstanding, nice, responsible brother. Paul got involved in drugs and prostitution (despite having plenty of money) that led him to some pretty shady dealings with some pretty shady people. Cass gets mistaken for Paul when he tries to return home from abroad and that sets into motion the first of a string of events that puts Cass in serious danger and has Kilo trying to save his life.
Some elements of the story may feel a bit over the top, but it was twisty, turny fictional drama and excitement at its best. For readers who enjoy characters that get under your skin, a relationship that seems doomed from the start, main characters who have crazy chemistry but almost nothing in common, lots of action and adventure, and questions that need answers, then grab this book. I definitely enjoyed it!
This book is 191 pages long and, believe me,391 wouldn't be enough of Kilo and Cass...I became emotionally invested from page one. Beautiful...I just can't find words to say how much I enjoyed this book. But what I liked the most is how this wasn't the story about Kilo&Cass only, but of Paul too...How tragic and complex character he was. In the genre (M/M) where authors can't seem to grasp the concept of "over-the-top" how unrealistic their stories sometimes are, pain and hurt that Paul and Cass went through their youth is realistic and you see how it shaped them into the men they became...I only wish it was longer, but that's just me. READ THIS BOOK! Like...now!
First read this in 2014, since I'm drawn to mercenary/assassins and, this was ex-military, mercenary/assassin. Plot holes? Who cares? It was action and danger and some seriously hot, well written sex scenes. This is the only Nacht/Euclid I've read as it appears to have been their best.
