*** I was provided with an ARC through Netgalley.com in exchange for honest feedback. ***

This prequel, meant to be read after 'Illusion', goes back in time to before Bianca is kidnapped. This quick read focuses on the days and months immediately following her father's death, as she begins her investigation into Bradley Corporation. Mostly, this book focuses on how she orchestrated her "chance meeting" with David Bradley, which she used to insert herself into his life.

Overall, the prequel was okay. It didn't reveal many details about the Bradley Corporation's involvement in her mother's death. Instead, it focused on the superficial relationship that she had with David. Although he was duped by Bianca, I couldn't help but feel like it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Really, he just seemed like a sleaze for most of the story. I guess they both got what they had coming.

At the end, David does give Bianca a warning. He tries to forewarn her that his brother Mattias is watching her and tries to scare her off. Maybe he was trying to help her, or maybe he just felt guilty for being caught red-handed cheating on Bianca.

Either way, this short story didn't seem to provide more than a little background information on the story of how Bianca dated David. Maybe there's something here that might prove to be valuable information later in the story, but for now nothing seemed to have any significance. It was really short and it was an okay way to pass some time. All in all, not great, but not all that bad either.

Welll...where to beggin...

Charade is a an original e-novella in the Swept Away series by J.S. Cooper and reveals the story that put in motion all the actions in the Illusion novel.

I've tried to read Illusion a few weeks back and I could not finish it...it was bad...very bad...you can see my review here.

Charade was an arc provided to me by Netgalley and although it had some parts that where off it was an ok read and it made me curious of what was about to happen. But I don't know if I would have finished it if it wasn't an arc.

description

But after finishing this novella I went back to Illusion an picket up where I left it because I have to know if . I just have to know how it ends...I'm a sucker for a mystery puzzle.

So kudos to you to you J.S. Cooper for making me go back and read a novel that I had no intension of ever finishing.

Received an ARC for review

I didn't like it. The writing was good, but I didn't like David or Bianca. He was a slight jerk and she was just a tease. I have no desire to read the rest of this series. Plus it took me two days to read this which is sad since it's only 66 pages, but I was bored.

Charade by J.S. Cooper is a 2015 Pocket Star Publication. I was provided a copy of this book as an XOXpert, the official street team of XOXO After Dark.

This novella length story is the second book in the “Swept Away” series. I confess I read this book ahead of “Illusion” the first book in the series. Usually, reading out of order is frowned upon, but in this case I actually recommend it if you are interested in this series. If you have read the first book and are wanting a little more back story, then you certainly will benefit from reading this short story, because it will clear up some things for you and help you understand the first book a little better.

Bianca is trying to unravel the cryptic message her father left her after he passed away. He is suggesting that her mother's death wasn't an accident after all, and so in order to find out the truth, Bianca attempts to infiltrate Bradley Inc. by engineering a meeting with David Bradley. She worms her way into David's life intent on learning more about the corporation and David's suspicious brother, Mattias.

The only benefit in reading this book is for the back story concerning Bianca's father and her relationship with David and how that all turned out, but also to cast suspicion on a few characters Bianca has put her trust in. This is good information to have, no matter which order you read the books in.

However, if you are looking for a romance, you won't find it here. There are a few steamy situations, but, romance isn't really the goal in this story.

The writing in this one was moderately better than in the first full length novel, but I'm probably going to bow out of this series. However, for those who enjoyed the first book, then you will want to pick this one up too.

5 "Perfect Bridge" Stars

This is the second book in Cooper's Swept Away Series. Illusion was an amazing full length novel that ended with a huge cliffhanger. This book is a novella and prequel to the first book. You really should read them in order to best enjoy the books. It is great because we get more of the back story between Bianca and David. We also see how Mattias was getting suspicious about Bianca. This book was a great bridge to tide us over until this Spring when Disillusioned comes out. With knowing more of the back story I think we will better understand what may take place in the next book. I was a little shocked that we didn't get any information on Bridgette in this book as I thought she had been dating David and Bianca had interacted with her. On a totally different topic, Rosie was really acting weird in this book. It was almost as if she knew what was going on and I can't help but think she had something to do with what happened in Illusion. I am sure I am just making something out of nothing, but Cooper has me wondering. I just can't wait til we get the rest of this story>

I really enjoyed Illusion and was excited to read Charade. Charade is kind of a prequel to Illusion. It's about Bianca and how she lured David into meeting her so she could put her plan in action. There wasn't a lot of new information in this novella. I did feel like it made me question Rosie and if she is really Bianca's friend. I laughed out loud while reading this at one point- when Bianca is trying to figure out her dating schedule and she has to consult to see if there are any good prime time tv shows on, I thought that was hilarious and hit a little close to home for me. I did feel a little disconnect from Bianca though, she was a tease to David and I could understand his frustration even if he was a jerk. I'm really enjoying this series and can't wait to see what happens next - I can't wait to find out how this is all going to come together.

I'm not sure how to rate this novella. Charade is a short prequel to the series where we read in more details what happened after her father's death. The thing is I didn't found the interactions she had with her friend Rosie really interesting or useful. The other part was about how she met David and how she found out she was. She also understand that Mattias is after her. Overall, it was ok but I was a little disappointed because we didn't really get a lot of new information unfortunately. I'm still looking forward to the next book, though!

After reading Illusion, I needed to know more about the relationship between Bianca and David and Charade was just the way to get it.

We meet Bianca right after her father's death and her finding the letter he had written for her. She starts her investigation into the Bradley's and figures out the perfect way to meet David Bradley, since his brother Mattias seems to be non-existent.

I did enjoy Bianca's private detective skills, but I wasn't a big fan of David's. He seemed to only want one thing from her, and she wasn't willing to give that to him. I really didn't think he cared about her at all in this book until the very end when he issued a warning about his brother. I think in the end he did care about Bianca (in his own odd way), but he cared about sex more. As much as I didn't like their "relationship" I really understand Bianca's reasoning behind trying to get close to David, she wants the truth about her mother's death, and being close to the Bradley's seems to be the logical step in getting that information. If only she knew what would happen to her for poking around in their business....

I was hoping we'd get more information and maybe some clues into everything that happened in Illusion, but I was left with more questions, as well as more distrust for characters (Rosie!). I was also a bit disappointed we didn't get more information on Bridgette since in Illusion we know that Bianca had met her and her admitting that seemed to be a big moment in the book.

Charade is definitely a quick read and should be read after Illusion, even though it occurs prior to Illusion. It helps fill in some blanks about David and Bianca, but also left me with a bunch of questions and more suspicions on who Jakob was, and if Rosie was part of everything happened. If you read Illusion and wanted to know more about how Bianca ended up in the mess she's in, then I do suggest reading Charade to get some background into Bianca's life before being kidnapped.

I have received this book as a member of the XOXperts, XOXO After Dark’s official street team, in exchange for an honest review.

ARC kindly provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

Let me start by saying that this book opens on a declaration that this is the Prequel to the Swept Away series and is best read after Illusion. I popped across to Amazon to find that said book is over £7 for the kindle edition and therefore out of my price range, so I had to read this on a standalone basis. I am a firm believer though that every book should stand up on it's own merit, even if it's part of a series so I went into this book on that basis.

Our leading lady Bianca has just lost her dad. Not having any money to leave to her, all he leaves her are two boxes full of patents and a cryptic letter. Therein starts Bianca's investigation into how her father went from being a partner in a three way company to an employee in the two man version, and around the mysterious circumstances of her mothers untimely death. Caitlin decides her way into the company is via the sons. One is mysterious and never seen, the other is a bit of a party boy, so she arranges to bump into him and hopes that this chance meeting will reap rewards.

Lo and behold, he doesn't get annoyed when she throws wine on him but asks her out to dinner instead. Therein starts the beginning of a weird and confusing semi relationship between the two. I have to say, if I was in his shoes, she wouldn't have lasted a second date. Meanwhile, i'm struggling to decide just what it is about the man boy that she finds so attractive.

This is a very short novella and I do feel that it could have been fleshed out a bit more to put some meat on the bones of the main characters. It doesn't really matter about your side players at this time, but you need to feel you have got to know your main characters enough to relate to them and I didn't feel this quite did enough to achieve that.

At the end, I was mildly curious about what the next book brings, but not chomping at the bit for the next piece like I normally am with a novella I love.

I love a good romance with a bit of mystery mixed in and yet again the author does a fabulous job of teasing of what is to come by giving us a bit more of the back story for the first book Illusion. Charade is a prequel to Illusion and gives insight on how Bianca came to be with her boyfriend David and why. His family (the Bradley's) are a mystery in them selves and hold the key to what Bianca is going through. It also helps you understand how her and Jacob come to be on the island.

This novella is best read after Illusion, even though it tells us the events leading up to that story. We get a lot of background information about what is going on in Bianca's world, especially the mystery surrounding her parents. Even though we are given some answers, we are still left with many questions. It is easy to see that this series will keep us guessing to the very end.

Honestly I loved illusion but I felt like the writing is this novella felt disconnected and you really didn't learn much, it's quite short but you get a feel of their relationship before Bianca gets kidnapped. I can't wait to read book 2 but this novella didn't do it for me at all.

I simple loved this book. It tore me apart, made me cry and then made me cry with happiness. Highly recommended and so worth reading.

Bianca London is a woman on a mission. Shortly after her father's death, the hints he left her leads her to discover that her mother's car accident might not have been a coincidence, and that her father might have been wronged by the company he worked for.

Now she wants to dig for information, and while the current CEO of her father's former company is practically a mystery man, she uses the man's brother, David Bradley to fetch for information. But how long will it take for her to get what she needs and how long until she slips up?

What I loved about this book:

It gave a much needed insight into the heroine's background and what she did to put herself in the situation she is in in Illusion
It gives interesting hints concerning other characters, and whether they, too, are not who they seem!

What I felt needed improvement:

The characters are still pretty tawdry

Charade is the prequel to the Swept Away series, and to the first book in the series called Illusion . I would recommend reading Charade only once you've read Illusion , just because there will be more suspense this way.

This book wasn't a must read for me (as it was short and didn't leave enough space for much action), but it definitely helped clear some of the questions that Illusion left unanswered, and explained exactly what kind of relationship Bianca entertained with David Bradley.

However, even though the writing was good, I still had an issue with the characters. In Illusion, it was only Bianca that was getting on my nerves with all of her back and forth, and that didn't change in Charade - it only got worse because David Bradley joined the douche-duo. Bianca was a tease and not following through with her plan, leading her to eventually slip in her role!
She plays the part of David's girlfriend, and while she is extremely attracted to him, she still doesn't put out of 2 months. Because apparently she has morals. Yeah, but she's already so far gone, not sure her morals count...
And the way she slips up and starts acting impatiently is just so obvious! I really had to roll my eyes! But then again David takes a long time to notice because he's to busy trying to bag his "girlfriend".

Yeah, and don't get me started on Bianca's friend, who feels like anything but!

But hey, it's only a novella and it's not as bad as some of the stuff out there so you might swell read it. Even if I was (still am) annoyed at Bianca in some ways, the cliffhanger at the end of Illusion got to me, and I am intrigued to find out what happens next, so I'll certainly read on!

Charade is a wonderful fulfillment of the back-story that was mentioned in Illusion. It helps to shed a bit more light on the shadowy and mysterious Bradley family. While that information is light and fluffy on the surface, there is much more that is left unsaid and alluded to that slowly takes form in Illusion. The only certainty is that nothing is as it seems, and that this game of cat and mouse has only just begin.

Bianca’s world shifts from the day her father dies to the day that she receives some confusing yet invaluable information that he leaves to her. Her inquisitive nature will not let this mystery go until she has unraveled every part of it. However, instinctively she knows that this information will come at a high price. The question she has to answer now is if she is willing to pay that cost. People in her life are not who they seem to be, and she feels like she is racing against a deadly clock that is ticking down to her own demise. Can she figure out who to trust and find the answers to this great secret before she is lost to this twisted game?

The more I read of this story, the more I realize how much I love it. I enjoy something that makes me think, and I have found everything that I love in this series. Bianca, David, and Rosie continue to make me second guess myself about their true motives. There is never a break in the tension of the story. Even when you think things are light-hearted, they are never quite what they seem to be. To some, this would equal to frustration, but I see it as a marvelous talent to keep my completely enthralled and hanging onto each and every word read and spoken. What a deliciously taunt and delightfully tantalizing gift that only keeps getting better and better!

J. S. Cooper has blessed us with a wonderfully twisted and yet heart-wrenching story of masterful suspense and beautiful romance expertly rolled into one glorious adventure! What more could I possibly ask for?! With each step I take farther into this amazing world, the more I lose myself to the darkness that is just begging to be illuminated and dissected for both the truth and the lies that it quietly and jealously holds prisoner. You won’t want to miss out on this spectacular story that is unlike any other.

ARC kindly provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

So, the only information about this book on NetGalley was the title (minus the "Swept Away, 1.5" part) and the author, which means I was going in blind when I requested and started reading it. However, it was by J.S. Cooper and I've heard great things.

I had been reading for a short period of time before noticing that I was nearly halfway done and decided to get on Goodreads to get some details. I was a little disappointed to discover this was a novella meant to be read after a book that I had not read yet because I didn't want to leave an unfair review. I decided to continue on since what I had read so far didn't leave me feeling like I was missing anything and just rate it based on how much it made me want to read the rest of the series.

Bianca embarked on a mission in this book that I felt required a lot of thought and planning. Yet, she seemed to have winged it the whole time. I know this because when it came time for her to lie about things or play it cool, she was terribly obvious that she was up-to-something. It was painful to read, actually. Even more so when Bianca recognizes how terrible her lies are and doesn't make an effort to make sure she doesn't get caught up again.

The only thing Bianca planned was meeting and snaring David. He was sexually aggressive within minutes of meeting her at a board meeting. She played the part of a respectable lady and didn't give in (good job). However, when it was two months later and she still wasn't giving it up, I was confused why he'd even still be there. I was also confused as to why she wasn't giving it up. I understand that he was kind of a tool (though Bianca was slightly attracted to him) and that she didn't want to lose self-respect by whoring herself out. But, 1) You've found NOTHING out in two months and aren't close to getting any information, 2) When the answers you're looking for represent life and death matters, I think you have to step your game up. No one's going to judge you.

I'm not very interested in finding out what happens next, though it suggested dangerous times ahead. I was crazy annoyed at Bianca and her terrible detective skills.

I wasn't sure that a prequel novella after the fact could sway me one way or the other on the enjoyment of this series, but I have to say that I'm pretty excited to finish out this series now that I've got the full 411 on Bianca!

It's been a very difficult time for Bianca London. With the death of her father, Bianca wishes that he'd have shared his concerns with her regarding her mother's death in a car accident. Instead, he leaves her with boxes of documents that shed some light onto his history with the Bradley family, a family whose fortunes collide with her family's tragedy. Now, Bianca is determined to make the acquaintance of the youngest Bradley brother David in order to ferret out the truth behind the documents. She didn't anticipate an attraction to the incredibly sexy man, nor did she expect to feel like the mouse to David's cat when he starts getting suspicious of her motives.

CHARADE is book 1.5 in the Swept Away Series and even though it's a prequel, it should be read after book 1, ILLUSION. This short novella gives us some insight as to why Bianca and Jakob were kidnapped and hauled off to a deserted island in that book. I actually liked Bianca in this story; I now understand her reasons for going all super spy on the Bradley's. David came off as goofy but sweet, a bit reckless maybe, but more a harmless trust fund baby. I happened to read ILLUSION and the second book, DISILLUSIONED prior to picking up CHARADE, so I know how portions of David and Bianca's story play out, so I'll just say that maaayyyyybe he's not exactly what he seems. I'm excited to pick up book 2.5, MASQUERADE while I wait for the culmination in this series, RESOLUTION, set for a December 2015 release.

Bottom Line: This is a great addition to the Swept Away Series, lending more empathy to Bianca's character and a better understanding of the characters' backgrounds. - See more at: http://www.theromancereviews.com/view...

~~

REVIEW: 3.75 stars--CHARADE is the prequel novella to J.S Cooper’s Swept Away series focusing on Bianca London and her personal investigation into Bradley Inc. Upon her father’s death, Bianca discovered that there may have been more to her mother’s death than purely an accident. What ensues is Bianca’s attempt to get closer to the Bradley heirs in order to uncover the truth about her father’s claims; betrayal at the hands of a friend; and years of lies and fraud.

J.S. Cooper’s CHARADE reveals some of the background information leading to Bianca and David’s relationship; their eventual break up; and hints at a struggling friendship, betrayal and manipulation. There are hidden clues and forewarnings regarding the people in Bianca’s life. No one can be trusted-even a best friend named Judas turned to save his own life.

We are introduced to Bianca, David Bradley, and Bianca’s best friend Rosie. We learn a little more about what motivates Bianca, her friendship with Rosie and her attempts to seduce a member of the Bradley family.

CHARADE is a quick and revealing read with a hint of betrayal and control; deception, dishonesty and duplicity. The storyline is a build up of deceit, lies, evasion and disbelief. While Bianca is desperate to uncover the truth, she is incapable of taking her plans through to the next level.

Charade by J. S. Cooper is the prequel novella in the Swept Away series. It can be read before book 1, Illusion or after. It is not a Stand Alone novella. It is a snippet of events in the complex plot in the Swept Away series.

Charade is an introduction to where it all began. Bianca’s father has passed away and she is left with boxes of old papers, letters, and documents that indicate that her mother’s death may not have been an accident. It also indicates that her father may have been swindled for a patent he created. It is the first time that Bianca has heard anything about her parents past.

The discoveries that she makes lead to more questions. The mystery is buried deep. Throughout her research on the information that she has obtained it is clear that the secrets have been buried deep and one family is behind it. She devises a plan to learn more about her parents past and the company that may have been responsible for their ruin.

She begins dating David Bradley, who is the son of the one of the founding members of the company in question. She is hoping to get close enough to find answers to her questions.

Bianca and David’s relationship progresses into what looks to be a very serious relationship. All seems to be going well until David starts showing his true colors. His family still remains a complete mystery. The past connections are starting to become dangerous. It is clear that his mysterious brother is the one in control.

Charade gives the reader a good insight to the story that is about to unfold in the Swept Away series. It gives the reader a sense of the mystery. It also gives the reader more of a sense of Bianca’s personality and drive.

I would recommend reading this novella along with the series. I am anxious to see where this series is going to next. New players are introduced in Illusion and the web of danger has been spun. The second book in the series, Disillusioned will release on March 17, 2015.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley.

I really thought I had this story figured out from reading Illusion. I was wrong! Charade wonderfully starts to fill in the backstory from Illusion. It has helped shed some light on the Bradley family. They have mystery and questions swirling around them. But then again, everything is just an Illusion, an intricate game of cat and mouse. It appears the game has just begun.

Bianca’s world shifts on its axis the day her father dies and she receives some disturbing information from him. The information and papers he leaves her are about her mother's death. Her mother's death does not seem to have been an accident!

Bianca's inquisitive nature will not let the mystery of the day that forever changed her life go until she has unraveled every part of it. She knows there are dangerous consequences to her actions. How high a price will she pay? Will she pay with her freedom and life? The question she has to answer now is if she is willing to pay that cost? The information can't change her past, but it could change or end her future.

People in her life are not who they seem to be, and she feels like she is racing against a deadline that is ticking down to her demise. Can she figure out who to trust and find the answers to this secret before she is lost to this twisted game of cat and mouse within a web of lies?

The more I read of this story, the more I realize how much I love it. It makes me think, second guess and question people and their real motives. Things are just not was they seem to be. This series keeps getting better and is masterfully written!

This is a prequel to Disillusioned. I discovered it quite essential to the series. Provides an insight on how and why it all began and discerning some of the charade. David’s and Bianca’s relationship; betrayals with more unsolved mysteries and riddles to solve. It also provides more information into what may have happened to Bianca’s parents, the relationship with the Bradley brothers, and the force behind the kidnapping. Some questions are answered while others lead to new ones. Bianca is attempting to attain the fall out of Bradley, London, & Maxwell and how it became only Bradley INC. Will she sleep with the enemy to accomplish it? Why does Matties Bradley need her out of the picture? When Bianca began her quest to unravel the truth to her parents past it may be conducive into changing her life in a manner she never expected.

“I’d been playing a game of cat and mouse and all of a sudden it struck me— I was the mouse."

“Let the games begin.”

This series is only getting better and continues leaving the reader demanding for more. J.S. Cooper is creative and imaginative with the composition of her storylines, which only entices the reader.
Perfect character development throughout the story. A passion filled, tragic, enthralling and suspenseful mystery.
Behind the scenes novella.

Bianca is heart broken after her fathers death and confused about the letter he left for her. She soon finds herself trying to find out if her mother was murdered and how all her fathers patents ended up belonging to another company.

In order to do this, Bianca decides to get close to the youngest Bradley son, David. But David isn't interested in a casual relationship and Bianca plan is being tested at every turn. How far will she have to carry this Charade in order to get the information she needs?

I wasn't sure what to expect with this since I am reading it before book one but I figured, hey it's a prequel. I was not disappointed!! I didn't feel lost at all and in fact really loved this start to the story. I am already trying to figure out who can be trusted and who is out for themselves! I can't wait to start reading the first book and see what happens!

My thoughts:

POV from Bianca
Quick hook or slow starter? 5 (I was hooked from the first chapter)
Character development: 4
Level of Romance between characters: 3
Passion/Heat level: 4 (David pushes for sex but as this is not a real relationship, Bianca never gives in)
Angst/Heartbreak: 4 (frustrating more than angsty or heartbreaking)
Cliffhanger?: Yes, this is a prequel to the first book in this series.

Overall, I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read what happens next!!

I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Charade is a quick read and serves as a prequel to Illusion. All the events in this book happen prior to her kidnapping and starts right when her father passed and ends with her meeting David. And just like in Illusion, the suspense is still there. You’re still trying to figure out everything and put the pieces of the puzzle together. Who is a friend, and who is foe? I feel so bad for Bianca and just want her to find out the truth.

description

It’s quite obvious that she can’t trust anyone. Not David. Not Rosie (in my opinion). Not the random man at the shareholders meeting. And definitely not the illusive Mattias Bradley.

Pretty much this whole book was about her meeting David, flirting with him, and eventually her dating him. For me, this was important. It helped me understand how they met, their relationship, his role within the Bradley Corporation, his feelings for her, his relationship with Mattias, and Mattias’ opinion of her.

This novella only piqued my interest even more, and I feel even more invested in this story. I am anxiously awaiting the release of Disillusioned in March.

My ratings: 4 stars

Time it took to read: A few hours

You should definitely read this novella if you read Illusion and want some more clues on what really happened with Bianca’s parents, what lead to her kidnapping, and if she can really trust either Bradley brother.

P.S. I received this book in exchange for my review.

Oh how I loved Illusion. Charade to me can be read either before or after book 1. I know in the beginning of Illusion I was so confused as to what was really going on but it made me want to read more to know what was going on. Now Charade occurs shortly after Bianca's father has passed and she receives his boxes of papers.

Bianca is trying to get handle her father's death. But once she starts going through the information left behind she knows she can't let this go. Digging into the company that her father worked for she starts to realize things are not always as they seem.

However getting into Bradley Inc. isn't going to be easy and she sets her eyes on David. He's easy accessible and loves women. However when it comes time to handle David things do not quite work out the way she wants. However she gains the interest of his older brother.

It is a great lead in to Illusion but I have to say I want want want Disillusioned. I feel like I'm dying a little bit more as I wait for it. I love getting ARCs but I have to say the only downfall is you have to wait that much longer to get the next book.

ARC provided by Gallery, Threshold, Pocket Books via NetGalley for an honest review!

This is a short little prequel that can either be read before or after Illusion (book 1 in the series). However, I recommend that you read it after, as the author intended. Part of the GREATNESS of Illusions was the .. WAIT, WHAT? ... over and over again. And I know that some readers find that to be confusing, when you don't really understand something or it's not what they predicted, but THAT'S what made Illusions such a page turner. The suspense of not REALLY knowing ....

This installment basically reveals the story that put in motion all the actions in the Illusion novel. It was well written and I absolutely flew through it because it's short and I just really cant get enough of this series as a whole. Every bit of information I can get to solidify the big picture I want to devour!

I really just CANNOT wait for Disillusioned to be published, but I'm not so naive in thinking it is going to answer the MANY questions I have rolling in my head and WHAT IS HAPPENING?! As a matter of fact, I hope it doesn't cuz THIS RIDE IS PERFECTION!
