Edited by S. A. Fix, An Explication of the Shorter Catechism by John Thomson is a singular example of a virtually complete Reformed Presbyterian “systematic theology” published in America in the first half of the eighteenth century. Clearly written and theologically rich, it holds both historical and doctrinal value for the reformed Christian reader.
Thomson offers an orthodox and insightful analysis of the Shorter Catechism, structuring his work around a series of explanatory questions—essentially producing a commentary on the catechism. This style sheds light on core Reformational doctrines, helping you understand its language and engage more deeply with its teaching. It will lead you to a clearer knowledge of the God of Scripture.
To Grow in Godliness and Strengthen Faith
Building on earlier works of this kind, Thomson writes with the care and conviction of a pastor-theologian. Even as a Baptist, I regularly consult the catechisms in my Sunday School teaching, and this volume will be a valuable resource to revisit.
After reading Thomson’s biography in the introduction (yes, the most significant eighteenth-century American Presbyterian I never heard of!), I found myself relating to him as a churchman, writer, and educator. An Explication of the Shorter Catehchism as an excellent book that will introduce new believers to important Christian doctrine, grow younger Christians in godliness, and strengthen the faith of older saints.
