Meet Nick. He's kind of dumb. Meet his wife, Amy. She's kind of a bitch. One day Amy goes missing. What happened? Find out...in GONE BITCH!
GONE BITCH is the hilarious new parody of Gone Girl which will have you on the edge of your seat AND rolling on the floor. All your favorite characters from Gone Girl are here...but way funnier!
First off, there's NICK. Nick doesn't seem particularly upset that his wife is missing, or particularly anxious to find her. But he is perfectly willing to stop by the searches for Amy...because he can try to pick up girls there using lines like, "I'd like to search YOUR woods." Nick also loves lying to the police. For example, Nick's alibi for the morning Amy disappeared is that he was hang gliding, taking a karate lesson, and shooting a major motion picture with Keanu Reeves.
There's also AMY, Nick's wife. Amy is basically the worst person ever. Which is unsurprising, since she's a really hot girl. Therefore her one goal in life is to make her hot girlfriends jealous, no matter what it takes. Would Amy really stoop so low as to frame Nick for murder just to make her hot girlfriends jealous? If you don't know the answer, then you haven't hung out with enough really hot girls.
There's GO, Nick's sister. Go makes out with Nick a lot, but don't get the wrong idea: they are NOT having sex. (Although they do get to third base once in a while.)
There's RAND and MARYBETH, Amy's parents, whose “Idiotic Amy” book series chronicles the embarrassing moments of Idiotic Amy, a girl who looks suspiciously like Amy and does embarrassing things suspiciously like things Amy has done. The books have been a huge success, with millions of girls worldwide buying volumes like “Idiotic Amy Wets The Bed” and “Idiotic Amy and the Guy She Had Sex With and Never Called Her Again”.
There's DESI, who's been stuck in the friend zone with Amy since kindergarten. Desi still hopes that one day Amy will come around and want to take things to another level, but tragically, he fails to realize that no guy ever escapes from the friend zone.
And don't forget BONEY and GILPIN, the detectives investigating Amy's disappearance. They strongly suspect the "crime scene" in Nick's living room is fake, because it's pretty hard for a grand piano to flip upside down accidentally.
With every page of GONE BITCH the tension builds:
Will Nick go to jail? Will Amy ever return? Will Nick ever get over his diarrhea from eating a search volunteer's Frito pie?
You'll want to keep reading to find out what happens, but you might not be able to stop laughing long enough to do so!
You've seen the movie. You've read the book. Now read the parody that makes fun of both!
Well, I understand this is a short book. Not short enough. It is cute for the first few paragraphs, but not nearly interesting enough to keep me reading past that. The original book was bad enough, and the result is the same. You still wish one of them had actually been murdered.
Disclaimer: I rec'd this as a prize in a contest on Goodreads.
I have to say, I hate giving this a one star rating. Especially since I won it. However, I feel like I cannot recommend this book for anyone. I thought Gone Girl was a very good book so I was really looking fwd to reading this parody of it. However, I found it way too offensive to get through. It takes a lot in a book to offend me but this hit on pretty much every mark.
I recently learned that there was a second parody book of Gone Girl and since I just saw the movie not too long ago I figured I'd give it a go. My first impression of this book was that it was very sarcastic. Being opposite does not equal funny in my book. I barely cracked a smile while reading this. There really wasn't anything new here except towards the end where we get some changes but I was skimming so I didn't really care and this isn't a long book.
If you want a really funny parody book then read Gone Girl Parody: Go Away Girl. This book had be LMFAO in the first chapter. Now that was some funny shit!!!
I haven’t read Gone Girl. I admit that Gone Bitch has me intrigued about what inspired this wacky book, but I enjoyed it for itself, a non-stop skewering of just about all our usually accepted ideas of propriety and political correctness. Nick is an amazingly appealing character considering he openly hates his wife and all he ever thinks about is sex. Lookner doesn’t miss a beat, perfectly maintaining Nick’s self-absorbed yet oddly innocent voice. Page after page is a surprise yet exactly what you would expect from these insane characters. Tight writing, and tight plotting too. If Gillian Flynn should be credited with the way all the threads tie together, I don’t know, but I was impressed that the story held up all the way to an end that was one more surprise and yet seamlessly fit. It's rude, crude, non-stop laugh out loud.
So first, I'd like to put out a disclaimer about my reading of this parody: I haven't read Gone Girl. The thriller/mystery genre isn't really my bag, so I didn't really have an interest in it. Then I got excited when I found out it was being made into a movie, because I could skip the book and just watch that (I know, I know. I'm a terrible reader.) Then I found out that the movie starred Ben Affleck, an actor whom I don't enjoy in the least. So I decided not to watch this either. Then I stumbled across the parody, chuckled at the title, and had to give it a go.
As someone who is unfamiliar with the original book Gone Girl, I thought this was a pretty funny story. The characters were really over-written and dramatic, and the narration was snarky. I snickered aloud more than once throughout the course of the book. While I know these characters are based on the ones from Gone Girl, I honestly have read quite a few books where Lookner's version of Amy was how I viewed the main female character: obsessed with her looks and image, really shallow, boring, and altogether unlikable. And on top of that, though Nick too is written with a sense of humor, and is not without his own problems, you kind of start to like him. Maybe I should give Ben's onscreen version a try after all.
This is a pretty quick read at 160 paperback pages, and it didn't take me very long to get through it all. If you have actually read Gone Girl I think you'll feel more strongly about this parody version; either you'll be angry that he satirized a book you loved, or you'll get a laugh or two at the expense of a book you didn't enjoy. As a neutral reader, that's how I feel- neutral. It was funny, but not something that I'll probably read again (that is, unless I read Gone Girl and come back to this). I think those who read it will enjoy it more or less than me, depending on how you liked it. I'd also recommend it to people who enjoy works like Nightlight by The Harvard Lampoon.
I received this book through the Goodreads Firstreads program in exchange for my honest review. This review can also be found on my blog, Bitches n Prose.
I just read GONE BITCH, a parody of GONE GIRL (written by Gillian Flynn) because it was suggested by a co-worker who received a free copy of this novel. I thought it was funny so I brought it and actually read it! I am ashamed of myself for reading and writing a review about it. But, I must say it was HILARIOUS. I couldn't stop laughing while reading and all from Nick’s perspective. Although, I still think Amy and Nick are sociopath who deserves each other. Nonetheless, it’s a fun quick read when you have nothing better to read.
I received a free copy of this novel from the author in exchange for a review. Previous to this I had read The Fault In Our Pants, another Steve Lookner book, and I was so excited to be able to read Gone Bitch. It was hilarious, especially if you've read the book this parody is based on, Gone Girl. But it can be read on it's own too. It's that funny.
So Nick's wife has gone missing, he's happy about this and everyone has congratulated him for it. Unfortunately the police are staring to suspect his happiness as something to be suspicious of, plus his alibi is something like a karate lesson, hang-gliding ,and filming a movie with Keanu Reeves. In the mean time he'll be staying at his sister Go's house, at least it'll be easier for them to hook up, but it's okay because they do not do intercourse, that would be weird. Meanwhile we find out Amy has planned this because honestly it'll make her husband so much cooler, and by default she would be better then all her friends. She's a hot girl and she's rich what do you expect?
The idiot Amy books were great. A lot of the titles made me laugh. The best one was her asking someone where there arm was.
Desi, is Amy's friend zone friend who want's to have her. He hit very close to home for me, I think he will for a lot of girls. In a funny way it makes you kind of want to look over your shoulder.
This book relies a lot of sexual humor. Most of the time Nick is hitting on some chick, with really bad lines about finding Amy, like "Search here often?" there is even a moment where several woman he's banging go on air, including his sister.
This is the book I'll be thinking about when the Gone Girl movie comes out. I now know I'll never be able to make it through that movie with a straight face.
A quickie read with a few laugh out loud moments. The title is self explanatory. Many incidents are ditto gone girl, but the are few alternate directions which show quite a different side of Amy and Nick. I enjoyed most parts, but only a 2 at the most 3 star rating because it's just a parody with nothing much to offer in the form of insight or knowledge.
I received this book from Mr. Lockner in return for a review. I genuinely appreciated the chance to read it but was disappointed. It was a funny take on Gone Girl but I was turned off by references to incest. I laughed through most of it and then the end came and I was disappointed again.
Whew, this parody of Gone Girl rocked liked none other! Just when you thought it couldn't get any more twisted, Lookner slam dunks you with another bombshell. I laughed, I rolled my eyes, I couldn't put it down. Oh, and the ending - masterful! Well done!
It was fun to read this book. It is so over the top and rich of laugh out loud moments (for not saying f*cked up), such a pity that it is really short. The ending was crazy. I hope Steve Lookner writes a parody of "Fifty Shades of Grey."
I watch Steve Lookner on his broadcast Youtube channel called Agenda Free TV. I like him there, so I thought I would check out this book. Oh boy... big mistake!! I should have known from his dry humor-less broadcasts that I wouldn't enjoy any comedy written by him. Honestly, there isn't a funny bone in the man's body. I don't want to give away any of the plot (which is extremely thin and unoriginal), so I will just say this... read the first few pages online if possible before purchasing this debacle of a parody.
Several years ago, I saw 'Vampire Sucks' on TV and I ended up laughing the entire movie. I didn't like Gone Girl very much and this parody is kinda funny minus the sexual part. Which is like predominant.
You read the first paragraph, and you *KNOW* a white man writes it. It was hard to finish reading the book, but I did it somehow, and I was not too fond of it. Parodies are meant to be fun, not fucking annoying. Ending the year with a wrong decision, hopefully, 2022 will be better (??).
As the year draws to a close, it’s great to revisit one of its greatest hits. Gone Bitch is a parody of Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl by Amazon author Steve Lookner.
In this send-up of Flynn’s masterpiece, Amy becomes even more self-obsessed and Nick is unmistakably thrilled by her mysterious disappearance. Many other features of the original are lampooned: Go is now Nick’s incestuous lover, and the overly-affectionate Randy and Marybeth are closet homosexuals. Best of all, the Dunnes’ Missouri home is only accessible via boat.
Gone Bitch is best enjoyed having read Gone Girl. Much of the humour comes from it’s extrapolation of it’s central themes and characters. Lookner has obviously read the original carefully because it takes the parodying job seriously.
This derivative mimics many of the plot twists but has an additional twist at the end, which satirises the twists themselves.
Some near-the-knuckle humour aside, Gone Bitch is everything you want from a parody: detailed, faithful, funny and a reminder of why you enjoyed the original so much in the first place.
What made me interested in this book, was that it as a Parody of Gone Girl. I've read other Parody's of other books and really enjoyed them, so I thought I'd give this on a shot.
Boy was it NOT what I expected.
I can't stack this up against Gone Girl since I haven't read it, but it was definitely an interesting read. There were some laugh out loud moments, but also some moments that had me cringing.
I think what most turned me off the book was the references to incest. Not something I enjoy reading about.
I think that if I had read Gone Girl before picking up this book, I may have enjoyed this book more, but hindsight is only 20/20.
If you've read Gone Girl and looking for a Parody book for it, go ahead and give this one a shot.
**ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review**
I received this book from the LibraryThing Early Reviewer program.
I had read and loved Gone, Girl by Gillian Flynn and watched the film adaptation so I was curious to read this parody of the novel.
At only 160 pages, Gone, Bitch is an abridged send-up of the original. Like its predecessor, it is written from alternating perspectives of the characters at different points in time.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was amusing, even hilarious, in parts. I looked forward to how plot points from the original would be imitated. However, the book does contain a fair amount of profanity and the descriptions can be crude and/or graphic. Although this book can be read on its own, I recommend reading Flynn's novel first to fully appreciate the humor.
Like most parodies, "Gone Bitch" trims the narrative fat of a typical novel (see also: "The Hunger Pains") to maintain a lean, fast-moving tale. While some passages stick too closely to Gillian Flynn's source novel, the humor is generally laugh-out-loud funny. Running gags involving porn, incest, transsexuals, and bad poetry (the "treasure hunt" clues are the stuff of vulgar genius) would be crass if they weren't so consistently hilarious. But author Steve Lookner scores a coup in the altered ending, which serves as a fitting end to his parody, and an oddly appropriate companion to Flynn's novel (in both cases, you're left slack-jawed and laughing at the absurdity of it all). Recommended to both lovers and haters of "Gone Girl."
I won a copy of this Parody from the author via Library Thing in exchange for my honest review. Thank you!
Since I enjoyed Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn so much, I was anxious to read Gone Bitch: A Parody of Gone Girl. It was very funny but there were moments that I didn't appreciate and those were the incest scenes. I didn't think it was necessary to include that aspect. There is nothing funny about incest.
I like that this Parody included all the main characters from Gone Girl. It's a fast, short read and will hold your attention even if you haven't read Gone Girl. However, read Gone Girl first and you'll enjoy Gone Bitch even more. I enjoyed it enough to give it 3 Stars.
I received this book free through Goodreads. I haven’t yet read Gone Girl although with all the hype about I had some idea of what it was about. The book arrived and I started to read it. I would have to say that it had me in stitches, I found the humour right up my street and didn’t stop laughing all the way through. Clearly Steve is no Samuel Pepys and maybe it was a bit predictable but with a title like Gone Bitch surely you know what’s coming. If you want a laugh then try this book. I will definitely be reading it again.
I really enjoyed my first parody book! Having already read Gone Girl and having just seen the movie the original story line was fresh in my mind making Gone Bitch: A Parody of Gone Girl a quick, fast-paced, hilarious read. I am not easily offended and if you are this book may be one you won't enjoy for the amount of sex and incest that goes on, but if you take it with a grain of salt you will really like this story. It has all the main characters and parodies them superbly.
This is a great book, if you love satire, the improbable and something unusual this is for you. Lots of novels claim to be funny even hilarious, this one lived up to and beyond its promise. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the scenes.
I think I might have liked this more if I liked Gone Girl more. But I'm one of those who loathes Gone Girl and subsequently most things that remind me of it. However, I did find this more enjoyable than GG. Particularly the ending.
This free copy was unable to hold my interest. The story descended head first into obvious caricature and cliche. It was neither clever, nor funny. I'm glad I didn't pay money for it.
The same tired old jokes throughout, plus some bizarre add-ins (why was their house flooded?). The only remotely funny thing was the (constant) assertions that Amy's parents were both gay, despite their loud and frequent sex with one another.
I won a copy of this ebook from LibraryThing giveaway. It was a quick and entertaining read. It's the first parody of a book that I have read and while it was okay, it won't be making my list of favorite genres.
