It kills me to have to tell you this because I know some of you will disregard everything I say afterwards. I hope you don't. I hope that if you follow my reviews you know by now that I'm honest. Sometimes brutally and trust me when I say some don't like it. If you've stumbled upon this review, I hope you give me and the book a chance. I really do stand behind my words.
I beta read this book.
I'll let that settle for a moment.
Cool. Now that's out of the way.
Genna Rulon is one of two authors I beta for. I count myself extremely lucky in that I can not only call them both friends but I can say that I helped them in their book writing endeavors. Being a beta is good and bad. I get to be a part of a process knowing that eventually someone will buy a book that I helped with. The reader may not know my name but that's okay, I do it more for the author. I want to see them succeed and grow. I love knowing that someone thinks my opinion matters enough to change something they wrote. BUT, There is a downside, my review isn't taken as seriously, readers may hate the book (which inadvertently is a reflection on me), or the reader and even the author may blame the beta for not catching things before it's published. For these reasons, I'm very picky with who I work with. I want to know that if I say "No this doesn't work" the author will listen. I also want to be able to say "that's crap Genna," and have her reply "okay I've fixed it!" Or have her argue why she thinks I'm wrong. Knowing that at the end of the day there are no hard feelings. She's open to hearing my critiques without it ruining the relationship. And I did exactly that with this book. There were things with Wes that didn't sit right and I called Genna on it. Told her that I didn't like his internal dialogue, it didn't feel manly to me. Guess what? She agreed and made changes. So if you still don't like Wes I guess it's my fault. Vice versa, there were things I thought needed to change that Genna said "hell no" to and that's okay. She's the author it's her baby. The story isn't in my head and she knows exactly where it's going and how it should be told.
At the end of the day, I'm so very proud of Temper For You. Genna has already shown her writing skills in Only For You and Pieces For You (I also beta read for this one) so there's no doubt she can write. In fact she writes very well. I went back to the first review I wrote on Only For You, to see how I felt back then.
Only For You is a refreshing, electric, thoughtful, witty debut novel and I’m honored that Genna asked me to read and review it.
That quote still holds true today for Temper For You (TFY). TFY is sexy, it's witty, it's gritty, it's very well written, and it's refreshing. The story starts out going in one direction and before you know it, it turns into a beautiful story of love, friendship, family, and the realization that some of us really can have our happily ever after. The dynamic between the characters in Genna's stories is like no other I've read. She brings together a motley crew of personalities and backgrounds and blends them together under the most extraordinary of circumstances. You will laugh and you will cry. At the end I hope you're just as content as I am.
Each Genna Rulon book is a journey of self discovery. The stories themselves are works of fiction but the characters and their backgrounds are relatable to you and me as individuals. There's a beautiful story here, beyond the hot sexy romance. TFY is really about relationships. It's about recognizing and accepting that sometimes our friends make a better family. That it's okay to let go your past and move forward surrounded by those who truly care for you. It's about letting go...
I'm proud of Temper For You but I'm more proud of Genna Rulon for pushing herself to be a better author, to think outside the box, and to give readers intelligent, well written books.
