The last book in our 3 book series with the Remmington Royals is complete, and I feel very satisfied and kind of sad. Spending so much time with characters for so long leaves me feeling separated once the series comes to a close, but this book was the sweetest enemies to lovers I could have asked for! Preston and Lucy were the least mentioned in the previous books as well as in the following spinoff series that came after these three that I read first. (Oops! but these prequels to what I learned prior to their happy endings was so much fun still!) You knew Lucy was royalty and related to Natalie's evil Ex Leo, and little sister to Amy's Royal husband Liam. We knew Preston was a friend of theirs growing up and close to Liam, but how did those two come together? Clearly, they were deep into their HEA in the spinoff books, but their beginning didn't fair so sweetly. Learning the history of them from the very beginning was satisfying and such a traditional setup for childhood enemies to end up in such a predicament that truly would test them mind body and soul.
Being the youngest of the Royal family, Lucy really does have a lot to follow after that was set in motion by so many other people. In ways that are both to her royal standings, long time history, and personal choices of others, she will be in the fallout. To grow into an adult with your own hopes and dreams, knowing that at any moment those will have to be cast aside to live a life of waving and smiling sweetly at crowds as the local Princess, now that your older brothers are off living their chosen lives in many ways, is such a suffocating feeling. Especially when you have become such a prolific up and coming fashion icon all on your own, and the potential to take that as high as possible is right at your fingertips. All to lose it to hold a space in a Royal bloodline because it's what's proper for their continued behaviors of their country. Outdated behaviors at that. Being forced into an arranged marriage by her King and Grandfather as the Honorable Princess she is, right at the peak of her career seems like the end of the world on top of being forced into marrying a stranger to keep heirs rolling in to the future. Until she's told that if she, in fact, marries the chosen man of her King and is a good girl making a show for the country, then she can continue working as a fashion designer. What a deal... which she considers. Would it be so bad to have some blue blood Duke dote on her every whim as his new purpose to appease her grandfather and country while also living her fashion dreams? Could she offer up her body eventually to bare an heir to keep her dream and freedoms of expression in her art alive? It seemed like a deal she could stomach until she realized her suiter was her worst life-long enemy.
Preston has tormented Lucy her entire life simply for the life she was born into. Now, as an adult, that dislike has turned into aggressive bitterness, filtering how Lucy looks to him. A spoiled princess by all facets. When thrust into this agreement alongside her, he's forced to cater to the one person he feels has already been catered to more than deserved. Now it's his job. He's sacrificing his entire identity to be her bag carrier to simply ensure the continued good standing of their home country and eventually have children. How could that even be possible when they can't stand the sight of one another? Preston is about to learn a lot about Lucy that he never knew and possibly has been misjudging his entire life when they cross paths early on in their new life path together when they happen to frequent the same erotic club which opens up a new dynamic to their relationship. One only he is aware of due to the mask policy at the club. But Preston would recognize his ravon haired enemy anywhere and proceeds to approach Lucy and offer a play night as her Dom without her knowledge of who is propositioning her... Wild move, Preston. The audacity to touch her body, knowing how much she would protest, set a tone you knew would cause issues much later.
The erotic club, being the thing that intimately tied our leads together at first, was both a strange setting to tie in but also really understandable considering Lucy's reasons why she started going their. It created an interesting environment to provoke the real powers at play here between Lucy and Preston and never would have just openly transpired considering their distate for one another. His need to have her submissive and do as she's told to break the vision he's held of her their entire lives is too strong to pass up, and her need to be told what to do fully, in only ways she's agreed to versus forced on her like her real life, sets a wild and interesting lead into our couples first erotic crossing. The spice that this dynamic pulls into the journey as their relationship develops around the shared intimacy is amazing. We don't get tons of spicy scenes, but the ones we get are so well placed and show the development in our MMC and FMCs understanding of who they are, how they really feel and what the true depths of their fears and pains carry.
The situations we navigate as Preston and Lucy figure out how their lives will sustain so much aren't really that indepth. It's a simple and traditional enemies to lovers back and forth, but the back and forth is so fun and entertaining. There are some deep thoughts and realizations that pull through their story like in all the plots, and your emotions and heart are pulled through it right along with them. The more they learn about one another, the more they learn why their families placed them in eachothers lives and reaching that was hard at times. Lucy feeling so betrayed by her mother in this setup was so sad. Her feelings are so disposable to everyone. Her body being used and offered up to be used by a man she had hated her whole life to simply produce a possible heir decades to come in the form of her self sacrifice... her feeling trapped was so valid. But have no fear, because our wild ladies of the Conneticut Comets arrive to help Lucy in her time of need when she reaches out to Hannah, Natalie, and our newest princess sister in law, Amy. We didn't get a lot of interaction from our past characters, but when we do, it's great. Hannah, again, is the best.
This book was sweet and enduring and such a great enemies to lovers trope. It didn't start easy and didn't get easy for a long time. There were no immediate connections or denials in public while secretly pining away. These two really hated each other for a long time before they clicked, and seeing that development was so fun.
It was around..... 70%, you got it, lol, that the drama finally started popping off, and a serious play came into motion, putting our couple in chaos and hanging in the balance. For the first time, it was someone else's fault and was way more exciting than our past miscommunication issues , so I appreciated it a lot!
Lucy and Preston are adorable and finding safety and power in one another by simply giving over the power to someone who wants your best interest versus to exploit it, is addicting to read.
Living for others will never feed your soul if you don't find something to ground you in your services of others. These two really learn that balance by empowering each other together and as individuals. That's a powerful couple trait.
