From rideshare to another realm, I wound up with a haunted manor, a portal to Arctara, and a goblin with zero chill.
Alex Mercer was a rideshare driver, dodging drunks and hauling tacos, until his uncle’s death gifted him Mercer Manor -- and a portal to Arctara, a land of monsters and magic. Trading delivery runs for low-stakes gigs, Alex aims to grind gold safely and ignore the fancy quests. With MMA skills, a snarky archer best friend sparking chemistry, and a fierce goblin ally with bold intentions, he’s set to tackle the little jobs, from bandits to bar fights, despite the Arctaran System throwing quests in his face.
But Arctara breeds chaos. As the gigs escalate, Alex’s “easy” tasks turn deadly, dragging him into a world of traps and secrets. With quirky companions piling up and stats he’d rather ignore, Alex must hustle to survive.
Goblin Gigs - Dungeon Book 1 is a hilarious, action-packed isekai where a gig-economy hero grinds his way to glory.
I really like the authors other work and this book in itself was pretty good. I just think he made the main character a little too dense when it comes to his romantic interests. They just weren't realistic. I understand where he was intending to go but it felt like the MC was just too oblivious.
This should have had a disclaimer about being FTB if it was marketed as "from the author of warlock", instead of a well written scene we get stupid jokes about unicorns
While I enjoyed this book very much, the beginning was pretty flat, so it only gets 4 stars.
The MC is a guy with a college degree that instead is active as a ride share driver. Somehow this necessitates 3 phones to manage. We spend a bit of time with him driving before he goes to a diner where his now best friend works, as she's the little sister of his former best friend who's moved away. After she gets off work, they head to his place to watch a movie, and she ends up camping out at his place when it gets late. He receives a call about an inheritance from an uncle that's been missing for 7 years and now been declared dead. He's gifted a remote manor that needs a lot of work, and apparently has a portal to another world in the basement. He's tricked into going into the portal, and then locked on the other side for a bit, and thus his adventures begin.
The first thing he does is rescue a goblin woman, who after the rescue offers him sex, which he turns down. She's entertaining in an annoying way He then gets back to the portal, finds it unlocked, and that his female friend went through it and is now missing. So back he goes to rescue the woman with the goblin's help. The plot is a bit haphazard in that it meanders a bit as if the story was not well plotted out. The hopping back and forth between Earth and the other world is a mechanic I'm not overly fond of, because it leads to the whole "I can get rich by cross realm trading" thing that feels like a major cheat code.
The book has plenty of laugh out loud moments, including the meeting of the fairy that inhabits the manor. Don't eat or drink anything from the point the MC mentions honey until that scene is over, unless you want to wear it.
The one sex scene in the book is more or less fade to black, as it ends upon penetration. That was a disappointment. There's already been discussion of the first LI accepting the "lay of the land" of the new world where men and/or women can have harems if they can support them, though she indicates she's not into women.
I look forward to the next book, despite some of the plot points not hitting with me.
Alex is slacking -- after his degree he is running gigs and barely making the rent. And hanging out with his not-girlfriend. Not a girlfriend because she is his best friend's kid sister.
And then he inherits the out-in-the-boonies house of his mysterious and gone uncle, but he has to stay there for a night, even though it may be haunted.
OK, OK -- you can definitely see where this is going. Yeah, the house has a portal to another world. And he get sucked in there. And (separately) so does Heather. Unlike many other isekai's, this has LitRPG elements. Like other isekai novels, this has goblins and elfs and pixies. And humans. And magic.
Anyways, adventuring and battles and loot and a harem slowly forming. An amusing spin in here is that the MC does not want world-saving quests -- he is fine with low-risk gigs for low reward. But, hey, as long as he can pay bills, it is cool with him.
I look forward to the series continuing. I had background annoyance in this book because the MC did the whole "Oh, I can't come on to Heather, her brother will kill me!" motif. On and on and on. But, finally, that one went away.
I love the goblin girl. I also am quite fond of Heather, but the goblin girl is an absolute kick.
After reading, I still don't know who/what the "dungeon dasher" is. I did like this, although it isn't as good as Warlock. Portal fantasy isn't really my favorite. Alex is a little annoying (clueless, slow to adapt), and we never get to see him actually sword-fight despite that being his main thing. He spent too much of the book's length trying to bring stuff over from Earth, I guess. The LitRPG elements were pretty unexpected (and unexplained), but I suppose more will follow on that. The one sex scene was underwhelming (brief, very little detail) after being built up for so long. I also felt kind of bad about how Livinia was treated (a little too harsh to still be funny). Overall, this book never got to the plot, but this series has a lot of story potential.
I hate it when I discover an amazing series too soon. “What do you mean, ‘I have to wait for the next book?!’ Are you joking??”
Seriously, this is gonna be painful. I thought waiting for the next ‘Warlock’ was gonna be bad, but now this, too?! And I’m almost finished with Alexis Carew!
Argh!
Look, here’s the deal: this author STANDS OUT from the rest. The MC is real, the women are powerful, and the dialog is great. I didn’t think he could top Warlock, but he did. I really did laugh out loud.
That said, the MC here is seriously dense. Had I been Heather, the side of his head would have been frying pan-shaped years ago. It works, don’t get me wrong, but only once.
And I mean that by every sense of the word. From the uncomfortably slow pacing, to the main character having amazing credentials (bachelor's degree, MMA trained, living a bland life that begs to get isekaid), but being as dense as a Japanese anime harem protagonist. To add the wonderful cherry on top, the story becomes a litrpg, at a time where it honestly had no business being.
The story does pick up at the latter half of the book, with some interesting characters. But the overall plot, pacing, romantic development, and magic system (Truly, can't put into words how disappointing it was to see that this was a litrpg...and I say this as someone who enjoys litrpgs) left much to be desired.
As we've come to expect from Daniel Kensington, Goblin Gigs was very well written. Kensington is almost singlehandedly redefining his genres, showing us that Mens Adventure doesn't have to suffer from poor quality writing - that haremlit and gamelit (or whatever you want to call them) can be on par with any other form of fiction. Like his other ongoing series, Warlock, Goblin Gigs is near-perfectly edited. But more importantly, it doesn't read like just another rehash of the same basic idea that everyone else is writing. Goblin Gigs reads like a book the author was having fun with while writing it, probably just as much fun as I had reading it.
It's a three and a half, it's worth the read if your into isekai, it's got that seldomly done combo of being able to transition back to Urban setting. The only annoying part is the MC is REALLY dense about the LI's advances, it's not ftb like another posted, but there is only one scene, and it's over really quick lol. It's not even close to the author's entry series, but they are trying to be different things.
There are so many Urban Fantasy books and even more “portal” fantasy books. But this one is likely the best I’ve read. Often you either see extensive to tedious world building at the cost of character development and uniqueness or vice versa. But this novel doesn’t get bogged down in either while still giving enough information and backstory for it all to make sense while feeling connected. Can’t wait to see where this goes.
this was a good book, unread it in three sittings and it sets up some great sequels. much lighter on the spicy stuff than the warlock books, which I missed but the story was good and pulled me along. compared to the other books in this genre it is blissfully well edited and sorted. I eagerly await the next one. his Warlick books were some of my favorites.
I really enjoy Kensingtons writing style and this book didn't leave me wanting. The idea of a returnable isekai isn't new, but I like what he's done and can't wait to see where it goes. It kinda reminds me of John van Stry portals of infinity but litrpg instead.
What else do you need to know. This was fun and fast. Quick character development. It is not full of typos and decree ups. So it is well edited and a good story that swings right into action. I enjoy the authors other works. I am waiting for a sequel to.another series he started and decided to try this story. I am glad I did.
I'm a big fan of the Warlock series, and am pleased that the quality is consistent in this new series. I'm not a gamer so the ltpg is not my format of choice. But Mr. Kensington develops such a quality storyline with a terrific group of intriguing, likeable characters that l was captivated. My only complaint is that I have to wait for Book 2.
This book definitely seems a bit less tense, a bit more light hearted, smaller stakes maybe, than his other series. But the quality is still there. Really can't wait for more.
A bit like the Narnia books were mashed up with the Radley's Home series. MC is f-ing dense, but at least he can fight. A decent read, but it didn't knock it out of the park. We'll see if the next book picks up the slack.
I'm a huge fan of Kensigton's Warlock series and I was happy to see another offering from him. Solid characters and writing as expected. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
Have subscription so read alot of books. This author is great. Funny and real even if it's about a fantasy world. I'm looking fo4wwr to future books and will now be reading his other series. Great job.
The voice actors dont work for this story. The vibe they give to the characters is not a good one, and given the MC's proclivity for describing women, it just sounds like he is an incel
This is a fine fantasy harem adventure novel. It is well written and edited. I especially like t inhe goblin woman. I anxiously await the author's next novel.
