I want you to imagine something. A spaghetti western (think Clint Eastwood) written by Quentin Tarantino, with a spoonful of John Waters and a splash of dark fantasy. What would that look like to you?
At first glance it could seem like a Frankenstein like monster which shouldn't go together. But, man, this author combines several genres and created a beast all it's own. A beast of a novel which you HAVE to read for the full effect.
This is a novel of several people. All of them are seeking revenge of some sort. It's set in the wild west but an alternative version. It's not the wild west you know necessarily but it still maintains that vibe. Bad people all around, saloons, grifters, snake oil salesmen, gamblers, and general reprobates are front and center.
And that includes the characters. I absolutely love a morally grey character. Likeable enough but deadly and calloused enough to not care. This book delivers that in spades. These characters are not necessarily good but not necessary bad. They just are and the author uses them to great effect.
There's a lot of deaths in here and the brutality is front and center as the novel goes on. This author did a great job at introducing the characters in a way which never strayed from the narrative. They simply became a part of this world and we experience their past through the lens of what they're going through.
You'll be taken back to that time as you read. The gunfights, brothels, saloons, and dirt ridden grounds all add to the amazingly atmospheric narrative of this book.
If you like westerns, if you like horror, if you like alternative history, if you like dark fantasy, if you like a bit of humor with your books, than this is a book I highly recommend.
