Collective #3

Never Forgotten

Rate this book
Continuing on from Forget Me Not and Remember Me, this is the thrilling third novel in Stacey Nash's unforgettable series.

Since the strike on Collective territory during Anamae's rescue, things have taken a turn for the worse. Unprovoked attacks on innocent people have Anamae and her friends fighting day and night to minimize the damage. With hundreds of lives lost, morale amongst the resistance fighters has plummeted. But that's the least of her worries.

Manvyke still has Anamae's mom, Annie, secreted away somewhere and after the way they parted, Anamae worries it's not at her mother's bidding. Maybe Annie's disappearance all those years ago wasn't her choice. But with Manvyke scouring the world, there's something far more pressing than the need to find Anamae's mother ...

It's a fight against time to find the other keys before Manvyke. In his hands, the three relics could unlock enough power to reek a much worse havoc than the current issues at hand. If the councillor gets his hands on those keys, civilization will bow down.

THE RACE IS ON.

Settled in and working with the resistance fighters once again meant Anamae, or Mae as her friends all called her, was able to stay in the company of best friend Will, plus Lilly and Jax. But the constant attacks by the Collective on innocent victims meant the four friends, plus other resistance operators were porting in to the fight scenes much more often. Their shifts were long and hard; often brutal – but the ongoing danger was escalating. With Manvyke continuing to hold Mae’s mother, Annie hostage – she’d left them nine years previously and Mae and her father still missed Annie deeply – she knew they somehow had to rescue her from the Collective’s clutches…

Mae held one of three keys, and the battle was on for the resistance to get their hands on at least one more. If Manvyke managed to find the other two keys, his brutality would take over the world – the death and destruction would be horrific; even worse than it currently was. And Manvyke wanted to get his hands on Mae as well – he knew that holding her hostage would ensure him the key she held; it would also mean the resistance could bow to his plans. But there was no way the resistance fighters would let that happen.

Mae had so much going through her head – her attraction to Jax; the deep friendship (could it be more?) with Will; the worry of her mother; plus her father’s illness. And then there was her hatred of Manvyke and his son Nik – would she and her friends be able to defeat the Collective? Would it be over soon, or was it far too late?

I’ve been looking forward so much to Aussie author Stacey Nash’s third book in the Collective series and Never Forgotten is a great follow on to books one and two. Fast paced and filled with tension, the plot is intense; Never Forgotten is told in the voices of both Jax and Mae. I hope there is a book four to follow! My only slight criticism was an occasional choppiness to the story along with the teenage angst which was a little drawn out. That said, I have no hesitation in recommending this novel highly to fans of the speculative fiction genre, though I do recommend reading the series in order.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy to read and review.

This is the third book in the series. The Collective has been striking out more since Mae was able to be rescued. Mae is upset that so many innocent people are being hurt and dying. She is still in the fight with the resistance . She is also hoping to find out what happened to her mother Annie. She is also having mixed ideas on if her mom works with the collective on purpose or is being for ed to. Jax is trying to find the other keys before his brother can. Jax has gone to another group to give Mae the space she said she needs. She still has to make a decision between Will and Jax. Then tension between the three is building but Mae is trying to not get distracted. She wants to make sure Manvyke can't hurt any more people and can't get the keys.

This was another great book in the series. You keep rooting for Mae and the resistance but it feels like the odds are always against them at the same time. I've been curious to see what the others keys they are looking for are like also. I was hoping some of the people she became friends with at the collective would be true friends and help her. I also like the little love triangle but feel she should end up with Jax. I think Will is just a best friend. Mae makes risky choices again in this book but you try to remember she is young and led by feelings alot.
I would recommend this book to a YA reader.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Plot: This is the third novel in the Collective series, told this time from both Mae and Jax’s point of view. Mae’s mother is still in the hands of the Collective, with Mae desperate to get her out and into the safe hands of the resistance. But is she all she seems? Doubts will come into play from all corners, with the group split; Jax is chasing his brother to stop him from gathering powerful artifacts – closing himself off from his friends in the process.

My Thoughts: When I read this, I panicked, thinking it was the final novel. But there’s one more to follow (phew!)

There’s a love triangle that isn’t really a love triangle. I’m totally team Jax, though I can (sort of) understand having confusing feelings, mistaken for the type of romantic love that Will wants it to be between him and Mae (I totally brooded with Jax over these scenes lol). I do wish Mae had come clean sooner, because it would have stopped a lot of the angst that was brewing – and Jax did make me a bit uncomfortable at times with his reaction to Will and Mae being friendly (they are best friends, after all!)

The story is told from both Mae and Jax’s points of view. I found that I didn’t really prefer one over the other, both were necessary to the plot as they were split for a majority of it. I did enjoy this book, but it wasn’t as engaging for me as the previous two. I think this was because Mae and Jax spent so much time apart, and their weirdness rubbed off on me. It’s interesting, as I don’t usually care for romance (and love triangles make me want to stab myself in the eye with a fork). But it turns out I need these two together like I need chocolate (always).

The plot ticked along nicely. Jax has some serious family issues – he felt quite unstable at times – and there was some action sequences that would make for a pretty cool movie I think ;) I don’t trust Mae’s mother though. Not at all. The pacing was good and it was certainly never boring. It really did feel like a race against time for Jax to put an end to his brother’s scheming, the book did nicely convey how complicated blood ties are; particularly when you are on opposite sides of a fight.

I get the feeling this is building up to quite a climax with the final novel yet to come; I’m looking forward to seeing how it pans out!

In Brief: A nice contribution to the Collective series, though it was a little weird having the main characters apart for much of the story. However it was still an enjoyable read, and I look forward to seeing how it all ends!

This book is the third of four in the young adult modern world/sci-fi Collective series, and gives us more details of the world and the hunt for the founders' keys. If you haven't read the first two books, I recommend that you go back and do so; this isn't the sort of series that you can jump into partway through.

I loved the little glimpses of foreign locations as Jax hunts for the second of the three powerful relics, trying to get there before Manvyke and his batshit crazy son, Nik, can. Mae, in the meantime, is trying to figure out what Manvyke has done with her mother, working on the assumption that she's a prisoner ... or worse. Mae's group also runs afoul of Nik at various points.

I keep mentioning Nik, because he was definitely the villain of the piece. Manvyke is largely off camera, whereas Nik appears frequently to taunt Jax, leer at Mae, and beat the snot out of all and sundry.

A lot of the story focuses on Mae's dilemma in choosing between Jax and Will. I'm not usually a love triangle kind of person, so I admit this particular sub-plot slowed things down for me a little. Still, the angsty bits are interwoven with other events, which were enough to keep me reading.

As far as the love triangle dilemma itself goes, it was obvious from the start of the series (not just this book) that Mae loved Jax. I didn't really understand why she chose to torture herself about the whole thing, except that Will is her best friend and she didn't want to hurt his feelings by rejecting him out of hand, I suppose?

Out of the two boys I actually prefer Will -- Jax is a little bit too angry and broken for me (and what's with him actually believing a word that comes out of Nik's mouth? I know they are brothers, but sheesh!). But by about halfway through I was cheering for Jax and Mae to get together just so they could both stop angsting all over everything. ;)

My favourite character is still Lilly, the sweet and sad friend of Mae's who is determined to be an active part of the resistance despite her overprotective father.

Never Forgotten does a good job as a "middle book" in that it transitions us from the discovery stories in the first two books to the set-up for the finale in book four. The pace is zippy, there is a respectable amount of kissing, and the touch of sci-fi tech is still my favourite part about this world.

This is part 3 in the Collective series and carries on the journey for Anamae, Jax, Will and the resistance crew in their fight against the Collective. It's important to note that you need to have read the previous 2 books to be able to keep up with this story.

This one is told at what I found to be a slower pace than the previous two books, and focuses on Jax and Anamae with their struggles separately. I found Jax's side of things to be a little lacking in excitement due to his brooding, but Anamae's side kept my interest with her battle with her emotions between Will and Jax plus the added quest to locate and reunite her family. I didn't find there to be a lot of character development for Jax, however Anamae definitely became a stronger and much more determined heroine in this story.

The love triangle that we were left with at the end of book 2 is resolved by the end of this one and I'm thankful for it. It's not one of my favourite love triangles because there wasn't as stronger pull on Anamae's emotions between the boys, and to me, it was obvious to me who she would choose from the very beginning.

The writing is fabulous and easy to follow. The climax was one that made me gasp and I wasn't expecting this kind of ending. However, there is a lot of unanswered questions and I trust that these will be answered by the end of book 4 when this series is completed.

Just to note, on Amazon, the book description states this is the third and final novel in this series. This is incorrect, I have it direct from the author herself that there will be a 4th book to finish off the series.

The characters are very likeable and each bring something different to the group. Anamae is sweet and caring yet very strong, Jax is tough and determined to set things right, Will is the protective one. I enjoyed the different dynamics that each of these characters bring along with the secondary characters, particularly the villains.

Overall, a little slower book in this series compared to the others but with a climax that is worth the wait. Can't wait for the final book to see how this wraps up.

Thank you to Stacey Nash and Harper Collins for providing me with a copy of this book.

Never Forgotten (Collective #3) by Stacey Nash Collective attacks continue, taxing the Resistance’s resources. Meanwhile, Manvyke still holds Anamae’s mom prisoner.

Stacey Nash did an impressive job continuing the Collective Series.

Never Forgotten has a lot of interesting drama between Mae, Jax, and Will. Personally, I am on team Jax. There are misunderstanding and lack of communication. Some stuff happening where you just want to shake some sense into the characters.

I have always liked Jax, but I really liked him after this story. My heart went out to him. He put a lot of pressure on himself because of his family and his feeling for Mae.

Jax’s brother, Nikias, was a cunning and malicious adversary. It is hard to believe the two are brothers. It would be difficult to be put in Jax’s situation. Nikias is still family. Then there is Jax’s father, Lysander Manvyke, he is about evil as they come. I am very interested in finding out how he will strike next.

Stacey Nash came up with some interesting adventures in this story. Never Forgotten was full of creativity and excitement. I enjoyed learning more about Collective Mythology. If you haven’t tried the Collective Series, I would definitely read them in order. It is a fascinating series, that is imaginative and stimulating.

*disappointed*

THE GOOD
1. Will
2. Will
3. Will
4. Will
6. Mae kissed Will!!

THE BAD
1. Jax
2. Jax
3. Jax
4. Mae
5. Mae kiss Jax O_O

MY THOUGHTS
WHYWHYWHYWHY. This book did not hook me. The first third was basically Mae going: "Hmmm, I've got two guys hanging all over me and I'm an idiot who DOES NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHOOSE." Second third: *gasp* JaxJaxJaxJax, oh no Jax is dead. Third: "JAX *smooch*"
Thought on characters:
Jax: A jerk
Will: MOST AWESOME CHARACTER IN THE BOOK
Mae: Whaaat is a decision? I love y'all.
*sigh* I also thought this was the last book, but it isn't. Now I have to sit through more books (because Mae's idiocy rubbed off on me so I'll request them) (or basically WILL)

DISCLAIMER: This is my opinion. If you think that love triangles are cool and not horrendous, you might like this book.

ALSO, GIVE ME CHOCOLATE.

FOR THE PARENTS
Cussing: this book has a lot.
Kissing: mild
Violence: not horrid

This story is told alternately by Mae and Jax. The love triangle continues awkwardly, and Jax leaves for a while so Mae can make up her mind. The Collective are killing lots of people and Nikolai is quite evil. Anamae wants to rescue her mother and she attempts to do so without permission. Will is definitely an excellent character and Jax seems emotionally disturbed. The book seems to end with a cliffhanger so I am not sure if it is the last book in the series or if more are planned.
