5 books52 followersI never once thought that I would be a writer. Honestly, it was just a little inkling floating around in my head until one day I couldn't get that idea out of my head. And just like that I thought to myself, “I should write a book. Yeah… a book.” I never had the intention of publishing it either and it wouldn't have gone up without the persistence, support, and encouragement from an amazing group of people. It took three years of my life to finish this beast, and I am proud to finally have it finished for all to read.
I am a new writer and a frequent reader interested in both writing and reading about action and adventure and suspense with romance mixed between all the chaos. I love to play music, especially Jazz guitar in a Jazz Ensemble.
Although I started out writing a book by a quick decision, it has quickly grown into a passion. The thrill of writing, once unknown, has revealed itself to me. I am currently working on the sequels for Restricted Renegade and Crisis as well as polishing a few other new book ideas.

Unrestricted Rising is full of action, suspense, and sprinkled with romance. Picking up where it left off in Restricted Renegade, we continue to follow Rachel and David as they battle the evils of their society. This second book of Torres’ Restricted Saga is even more enjoyable than its predecessor. The writing is clean and the pace spot on. It still encompasses everything I loved from the first book—detailed and interesting world building, Rachel’s strength, and the allure of David’s small yet crucial POV—but plot and overall feel of Unrestricted Rising becomes more mature. And the end! I’m on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next installment.

“Unrestricted Rising” (UR) is the second book in the Restricted Saga. It is a direct sequel to “Restricted Renegade” (RR). I am honored and privileged to have been given an ARC to review.
The events of UR seem to take place directly after the ending of the first book. Once again we are given a 3:1 ratio of Rachel-to-David narration, as the book makes clear jumps between both characters, and directly lets you know who is speaking. The previous book did this too, but some people were either blind when the novel made this indication, or just a-holes who preferred to ignore it. Whatever the case may be, you won’t have a problem with narration in this book.
The author, Torres, is much more succinct in this novel. A lot of the stuff that seemed to make RR drag in spots has been cut. The story and book as a whole is light years better than RR, and I enjoyed portions of that novel very much. There really isn’t a whole lot of downtime in UR, and yet it still seems balanced with how we get to learn more about Rachel and David, and some of the secret, undercurrent hands which are pulling various strings.
Perhaps it’s the ratio in which we are given snippets into each character, but I actually prefer David as a protagonist to Rachel. This has nothing to do with me being a guy and not identifying with a woman. He’s just a much more efficiently written character, and I would like to see more of him. Then again, maybe this is due to the fact that he is given less screen time. A “less is more” approach.
While I think the story telling and plot in UR took two big steps forward, I think the characters took a step back. They just didn’t seem to progress the way I wanted when compared to where they finished RR. This is a problem since no one will confuse the Restricted saga with being action/plot driven as opposed to action/character driven.
A large portion of this problem can be credited to Rachel. I felt there wasn’t enough that set her apart from the previous novel in terms of developing as a person. Also, a lot of what she did seemed to still revolve around David and their still budding relationship. I think this can be credited to the fact not enough space, time wise, was given between UR and RR. I think setting UR a few months, or a year, into the future would have forced the characters to grow. They just seemed forced and illogical. A boyfriend/husband who has years more experience and knowledge isn’t going to just be ok, and live with his girlfriend/wife who is worlds behind in training to do the things she does. It’s one thing if the guy is in trouble, or not around, and the girl has to spring into action because she is forced to do it. It’s another when he just folds his arms, crosses his feet at the ankles, and leans against a truck as she walks into enemy territory.
On the other hand, this could just be a problem with the genre of the novel itself. Young Adult lends itself to simpler, more immature character development. However, I feel this is a problem as sometimes UR teetered back and forth between being YA, and being something else entirely. It’s that something else entirely that I liked more about this book. It seemed the stakes were higher, and the tone was just more adult. It was more “Angels and Demons” at times, and less “Divergent.”
However you want to slice it, the relationship between David and Rachel (which was a strength in RR) is a hindrance in this novel. I felt the characters would have had more room to grow apart from each other. Instead, Rachel is caught up in a teenage drama while David is busy trying to pull shit together. It’s an obvious tension and drama grabber for a YA audience, (and champions of that genre will LOVE this book) but a total “roll your eyes” moment for me. Chalk this up to genre preference, maybe?
I don’t know. If Rachel is going to act like a 17 year old girl (she is) when it comes to relationships, then why is she given so much authority over everyone else despite the fact she is still a newbie to this war? She may have played a crucial part in bringing the previous villain down, but Luke Skywalker blew up the Deathstar in Episode 4 and he wasn’t automatically general supreme in Episode 5. Again...genre preference. But, like I said, this wouldn’t be a problem if elements of UR didn’t make it seem more grown up than a YA novel would allow for.
The action, which was great in RR, is superb in UR. A lot more clear. It’s fast paced, and brutal at times (a YA problem, but I liked it). When Rachel was forced into making choices towards the end of the novel, I liked her better than when she had free reign. David was great, as I said. The character Melody will be someone who makes a lot of readers raise their eyebrows.
I liked UR and am looking forward to Restricted Saga #3. I’m hoping for a more mature, and gut wrenching installment. With the way this one ended, I’m thinking I’ll get my wish.

Unrestricted rising starts off where restricted renegade left off.
We still follow Rachel and David and their head on battles to free the mainland.
Everything is intensified to the max in this second instalment !
Rachel and David's lives take a huge turn in this book, and we follow their fights, sorrow and love.
We really get to see who Rachel is when she sets on to rescue her mother from these disgusting rats! She gets her revenge against Johnson ahh what a great moment! Rachel is really maturing during this book, and you get to know her much better.
David is being poisoned by the biggest ***** argh I really hate her! Knew there was something fishy about her! So much of the book David is in third person, he is in there but the poison controls him most of the time.
It's very detailed and so much is happening, and you see the whole world changeing. It's exiting, enthralling with hot action and passionate love!
I simply can't wait till the next book arrives!

Ok just wow!! I loved this novel, I love the mix of action and romance. Its not a shoving the romance down your throat book, which is a major bonus, but you still get wrapped up in David and Rachel's story! Then of course the action! Where do I even begin!! This book starts and finishes with kickass fighting scenes, tense buildups to the fights and of course the whole what is gonna happen with David(I won't give any spoilers so I'm just gonna leave it there!!) This book was amazing and a great lead on from the first book! A definite must read!

A much better book than it's predecessor. I was a bit skeptical when the author reached out to me about giving his series another shot. I'm glad I did.
Though I think the development of Rachel is still a bit too immature, the high action and adrenaline aspects of the book really pay off.
This is better than Divergent.

Yeah, I guess the author has to like their own book. I enjoyed writing Unrestricted Rising. There's more plot twists, romance, tragedy, suspense, and oh yes people, action!
