Contagious Chaos, the highly anticipated third book in the Contagium Series, winner of the Contagious Reads Horror Con’s 2014 best horror series, follows Orissa and her friends as they struggle through a zombie filled world.
When the compound starts to fill and food supplies dwindle, Fuller’s soldiers and Marines have no choice but to venture out into the lawless wastelands of America where they discover a new kind of enemy.
What foe could be more frightening than zombies? A fortress for the criminally insane--unhinged survivors who will stop at nothing to take Orissa and her friends down for good,
In order serve and protect their compound, will the gang have to abandon their own moral code and engage in a war against the uninfected? How far is Orissa willing to go?
Emily Goodwin is the New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author of over a dozen of romantic titles. Emily writes the kind of books she likes to read, and is a sucker for a swoon-worthy bad boy and happily ever afters.
She lives in the midwest with her husband and two daughters. When she's not writing, you can find her riding her horses, hiking, reading, or drinking wine with friends.
Emily is represented by Julie Gwinn of the Seymour Agency.
I don't know if it's entirely fair that I rate this based on beta reading, but it's safe to say that even before final edits, this book will definitely live up to Emily Goodwin's fans! It is full to the brim with blood, gore, and slime! Zombies, intrigue, nail-biting stress, with just a dash of romance; the very definition of a book in perfect balance.
This series just gets better with each book. When I first started it, I even debated not continuing, but I am so glad I did. Like another, very famous, zombie series shows, while zombies are trouble, after a while you learn the real threat is other people. Not all are nice, and some will stoop to terrible means to survive (or even just get what they want). This volume starts in a bad place for Orissa. I do feel her recovery time took too much space but otherwise, this book was fairly action-packed and even has some intense scenes. We do lose people in this. Sad times. And a vengeful team means a deadly team. But there are happy times too! I am actually eager to get to the next book now.
Contagious Chaos is the third volume of the Contagium series, which is the chronicles of a young woman (Orissa "Rissa" Penwell) as she struggles to survive a zombie-outbreak. Rissa' situation is slightly better than most zombie survivors as she quickly hooks up with a group of Marines who defy genre convention by NOT being evil rapists or morons. Indeed, the Marines are some of the few characters in the genre actually trying to take the world back even if it's going very-very slowly.
The premise is Rissa has gotten herself captured while exploring a former insane asylum. The inhabitants (a group of white-supremacists which have taken over) have set up their own quasi-Woodbury-esque dictatorship under a man named Dre. The asylum-dwellers have ample food, medical supplies, and weapons which they have been using to (what else) prey on other survivors. They intend to beat and torture a location of Rissa's group out of her. Rissa doesn't intend to let this happen and will do her best to escape so she can warn her friends.
I think the asylum-dwellers are biting off more than they can chew as I would put my money on the Marines rather than a group of heavily-armed gang members. The author tries to sell them as a serious threat, however, and a group comparable in might. I can't say I'm a big fan of setting up "utterly evil settlements" in zombie stories, though, even if there's justifications for this like them being composed of racists.
I'm more a fan of things like Rick being willing to take the Woodbury survivors into the prison at the end rather than total destruction as the only recourse. We have enough arguing for that in the real world without fictional people being reduced (ironically) zombies.
Contagious Chaos is more interested in telling a story of good versus evil with a side order of revenge than moral ambiguity, however. The asylum dwellers killed a friend of Rissa and tortured her, which drives her to want to exterminate them throughout the story. Any and all obstacles which stand in her way are ones she cuts through with a knife. Rissa even plans to unleash zombies onto the asylum, something I'd only advocate for the Terminus folk.
The book makes use of one of my personal bugbears in sexual assault (or the threat thereof) as a means of illustrating the villains are evil. I automatically remove a point from any novel which makes use of this plot point. I've seen it too many times in everything from the Book of Eli to The Walking Dead to ever want to see it again. Thankfully, it never gets beyond the villains suggesting it is Rissa's fate if she doesn't cooperate.
Despite this, Contagious Chaos is good.
Quite good.
Rissa is an excellent proactive female heroine in a genre which is only now starting to produce excellent ones. She's tough, intelligent, motivated, and neither overly sexualized or removed of those qualities. Rissa has a fully-realized personality and we get to know her intimately during this book. Even if I believe her desire to destroy the asylum residents verges on the brutal, many readers will appreciate a female protagonist motivated by anger and revenge.
My wife certainly does.
I liked the character of Hayden who is a wonderful romantic foil for Rissa. As the handsome Marine she's seeing and the only human being with an immunity to zombie-itis (so to speak), he could easily be the protagonist of the series but isn't. I like how he desires to be protective of Rissa but understands that's a stupid attitude to have with someone so proactive. Their relationship sort of reminds me of the best of Buffy and Angel.
The book is filled with action, great emotional moments, and hard decisions. Rissa is the toughest woman left alive in the world and it's fun watching her have to push the Marines to the right decisions sometime. I also like her relationship with her fellow female survivors, teaching them how to be tougher in a world where weakness is going to be exploited.
In conclusion, I think this is an excellent action-orientated zombie apocalypse novel. It's about finding the bad guys and smashing them up good. It's got plenty of zombie-killing, romance, and despicable villains. I may not like its depiction of the mentally ill or the threat of sexual assault as a problem for our heroine to overcome but these are minor issues in the grand scheme of things.
LOL. Does that work for you? No, you want to know why? Ok, let's break it down. Nevermind the fact that I've been waiting forever for this book, my anticipation put it on a pedestal with the potential of falling and breaking. But no way, Emily Goodwin carried this book out like a... well, like a ass kicking zombie killer! Goodwin wastes no time throwing us right into the action.
Contagious Chaos picks up right at the end of Deathly Contagious, with Rider and Orissa in BIG trouble getting snagged by the enemy. True to Orissa style, this chick fights with every fiber in her being. I freaking LOVE her. She is ruthless when it comes down to it. You.Do.Not.Mess.With.Orissa. Period. She is fierce. No, not fierce. Fucking fierce. But you know, there is a lot more to her than fighting. Riss has heart. Lots of it. The majority of that belongs to Hayden, but there is room in there for everyone else. What I like about her, is that even though she has her preference about how everything goes, she is able to approach things unbiased when she needs to. She looks at things logically. Yes, her heart drives her, but her brain is the one that ultimately makes the decisions. She's lethal. She's smart.
The stakes are higher all throughout this book. We're looking at a war with zombies, humans, and a dwindling stock of supplies. There is a lot of two steps forward, one step back. I love that while this book continues on the arc I want it to, not everything is coming up daises. People are lost... turned into zombies and re-killed. But there are also some really wonderful things that happen. Things you would never expect, but they bring out an ear-to-ear smile when they happen.
Ladies, let's talk about Hayden. That sexy mofo Marine! Sigh. He is dreamy. Tough, strong, a leader... the man is like Orissa, his heart leads him in the right direction, but his head is making the decisions. And both his heart and his head want to keep Orissa safe. Trouble follows her like she's got it on a leash!! He might have the weight of the world on his shoulders, but you can definitely tell that Orissa is his sun. I can not tell you how much I love the devotion, attention, and love between these two. But Hayden specifically is like the dream guy you want with you in the zompoc.
I've read a bazillion zombie horror books. This series ranks right up there with my favorites. The action and grossness stay high throughout the whole series. Relationships evolve at an appropriate pace. Zombies become more varied as time progresses; some are "gummy" and decomposing at a fast rate, while others are new, fresh, and crazy. The heroes are more than just the main characters. In this book there is a group of them at the compound. They are called A1's. Speaking of which, that's something else I love about this book. The compound and internal rules this community has built really is something awesome. But the A1s are really great, it would be awesome to see a spin off book with Ivan, cause there's a lot more than meets the eye with that fella.
So yeah. If you like zombies, you should definitely read this!! Five stars, for sure!
Emily never disappoints! I think this book is my favorite of the 3 Contagium books so far. It was action packed, and gory! Just how I love my zombie novels. Orissa will always be one of my favorite protagonists, she is a strong, determined, and her weakness is her humanity. She loves and cares about the people around her when others seem to be losing that trait in the zombie apocalypse, Rissa holds tight to it. And I LOVE that about her, because it isn't a weakness at all. I cannot wait for this series to be rereleased so I can go back to recommending it to everyone I meet!
***ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!!!*** Emily Goodwin does it again!!!! This book is absolutely perfect in every way. This series has captivated me ever since book one, page one. Contagious Chaos is better than I EVER could have imagined. I'm so thankful for the beautiful mind of Emily Goodwin and the amazing journey she's created for us all! Do yourself a favor and dive into the world of Orissa. It's a phenomenal, ass kicking ride!!!
This right here is the best book of the series. The book reads like one long story while the first 2 seem more like a collection of stories documenting the history of the compound as it was built.
The inclusion of the new set of survivors, the plans for taking down Eastmore, and that dainty little horse all fit together into the single story.
That's not to say the other books sucked, they were great and got us to this point.
This author seriously needs to learn how to use a thesaurus. If I see the word "resituated" again I'm going to scream. It wasn't used quite as much in this book as the last one thankfully. There are still a lot of grammatical errors in the third book but definitely not as bad as the previous one. Overall I like this series even though I grow tired of some of the over-the-top situations.
Absolutely amazing 👏🏼 This has got to be 1 of my favorite dystopia series I've ever read as of yet! I'm crushing on Orissa as she's the badass heroine. I'm dying to find out what Fuller put on that video message! I've got a new found respect for Emily Goodwin now that I'm 3 books in, she's got me hooked & I'll definitely be reading more of her books 📚
"I love this series; each book has more action than the last. It would be great to see it adapted into a TV series or a movie. The only downside is that I have to read it in English, but to keep going, I have to make that sacrifice."
The writing is excellent, making you feel, hear and smell the woods, the blood, the zombies. I was on the edge the whole time. I have come to really love this series. It is one of my favorite zombie books. I have had a hard time finding good zombie books. I found this one after I had read this "This Would Be Paradise". Another good zombie book. But I have thoroughly enjoyed the series and am excited to read the next one.
From beginning to end it was an emotional roller coaster, I laughed, I was sad, I was angry, I was scared, I can't wait to read the next book in the series. Looking forward to! Overall, again very good book to read. I would recommend this series to anyone looking for a good zombie book.
I have fell in love with Orissa this butt kicking zombie slayer and her beloved Hayden and their group. It seems that you don't have to worry just about zombies but also those who are alive and breathing as well. We see how Orissa and her group encounter a new group of people who are not friendly and when Orissa is kidnapped all hell breaks loose. We see what truly happens when you mess with the compound and the huge family it has become. You mess with one, you mess with all and that is no joke. We get to see just how smart Orissa is when it comes to situations and surviving this is one girl I want on my team. Hayden actually gets a surprise with this one and I was very glad for him he needs some good in his life besides Orissa. Now it seems that Orissa will find herself in a not so good situations with some bad folks and I felt for her but she is strong and we see this especially when she is put through the ringer. That is what I really enjoy with these zombie books. You have characters like her that are strong and not just some helpless person. This group of survivors is more than zombie slayers they are a true family and I love it. I really love how they all can joke around but be serious when need be and take care of business. At the end we are left with that lovely cliffhanger and I am going to be diving into book four to see what we can find out with Hayden and Orissa. It seems way to juicy to not be told. This is an amazing zombie series that I think once you start you won't put down. There is romance, action, suspense on what will happen next, heartache. It blends well together to make a good story.
3 1/2 Platypires for Contagious Chaos by Emily Goodwin.
I received a free copy from the author for an honest review.
Orissa, Orissa, Orissa! Girl! How I missed you! I seriously think Orissa is one the most badass heroines in literary fiction. She can give Buffy a run for her money and I do not say that lightly. I'm glad to see that in Contagious Chaos she was still kicking butt and taking names. This book is still very action packed and filled with a lot of zombies. So many touch and go moments that will have you talking back to your book. My only complaint is that I felt some scenes weren't needed and made the story longer than it had to be. I kept waiting for the big scene at the hospital to happen and it felt like it was never going to take place. Orissa and company kept having so many distractions but I understand. It's the zombie apocalypse, nothing ever goes as planned. Thankfully, Emily Goodwin knows how to write a freaking ending. Oh crap I gotta read the next book.
Even though I liked the other two books more than this one; I would still highly recommend this series.
Yeah, Emily Goodwin! Two years waiting and Emily came through! In this one we lost some well loved people and gained some. We found some bad guys and the group went after them, running into zombies. This was a very exciting third entry, with Orissa and Hayden getting even closer. The writing is excellent, making you feel, hear and smell the woods, the blood, the zombies. I won't tell you what happens of course. But I will tell you there is a huge cliff hanger at the end. The fourth and last entry will be released later this month (October 2014).
Now I will say one thing more. Fans of Emily Goodwin's Contagious series waited two years for this one. She got a publisher and editor. Still I found errors in word usage. Not as much as before but if she has a true editor these errors should have been found and fixed. Just saying. I would normally take off a star for lack of good editing but it wasn't all that bad.
I've been waiting for a long time for this third book and boy was I not disappointed... Like the previous books it's a non stop action packed story with a bit of romance. This time I came prepared and completely cleared my schedule so I could read the story without being interrupted. Be careful because when you start reading you won't want to stop.... it's that good so kiss your social life good-bye!! Thanks a lot EG for this book.. I just loved it and I loved Orissa and Hayden but also all secondary characters. The ending as usual keeps you wanting for more and I can't wait for the fourth book........ So don't hesitate and read it but I think it goes without saying that you need to read the whole series to appreciate this book.
Definitely worth waiting for! Another fantastic installment in the Contagium series. I am now eagerly awaiting the 4th installment. Once again Orissa and her friends jump into the fray not only having to fight zombies to survive but humans as well. Action packed with never a dull moment, I was cheering Orissa on as she kicked ass. Fantastic Orissa & Hayden moments for those that are fans of the romance but not so much that would put someone who wasn't off. You keep writing them Emily & I keep reading them!
Emily Goodwin created a story line that is amazing and made characters that readied they were your friends.I just wish that Argos the dog was a bigger part. He make for a great zombie killer. Read on...I can't review this so it's a non review because I would have to include a spoiler and no can do. Quit being lazy and just hurry up and finish the book so you can go on to the last book.
We see how Orissa is falling into the compound life with Hayden. We also see she is not giving up her independence. I love how this story moves without sacrificing the writing. The author is staying true to the story without making it far fetched and unrealistic. I like it and can't wait for the ending.
The action in this book/series is almost enough to give me an ulcer. I read the whole thing at the edge of my seat. I love our 56 man team - they really kick butt I was sad when Jason took over for Rider though I loved rider and I don't want Jason to die (he's to young)
I cannot wait to read the final book and see how it all ends.
The ending of this trilogy felt a bit abrupt. It seemed as though several other plots points were suggested during the course of the over all story that where never picked up on. Nevertheless I enjoyed it throughly and read the book almost as fast as I could. If anything, I might have allowed down only to prolong the inevitable.
I am giving this book 5 stars because I love the people in the book so much. That being said, the editing sucked. Seriously. It was horrible. I just couldn't give a 5 star rating and not mention the editing.
