Rate this book
A call to make, mobilize & multiply disciples

As a church leader, your heart longs to see disciples who make disciples. But how do you move from good intentions to a clear, practical plan? How do you measure success by more than program attendance—by true life transformation? How do you carry ministry beyond the walls of your church into the places your people live, work, and play? And how do you cast a compelling vision that turns passive attenders into active disciple-makers?

In Movement-Ready Church, Robby Gallaty and Vick Green guide you to build a disciple-making blueprint tailored to your unique context. Drawing from decades of equipping pastors in every kind of church, they provide the tools, frameworks, and encouragement you need to renew your heart, reshape your culture, and clarify your strategy. Whether you feel stuck or simply know there’s more, this book will help you activate the disciple-making movement your church was made for.

I've read most of Robby Gallaty's books, and you will recognize several familiar themes in this one. However, it is an evolution of previous models, largely driven by post-pandemic changes in church attendance and participation, along with refinement of principles learned from over a decade of consulting with churches. This book has a lot of great information. Robby is the king of acronyms and alliterations, and his models, borrowing heavily from business leaders (as he indicates would be true--moving from Biblical foundation to more secular application), are insightful and clear. He explains things really well with models that are easy to understand.

The thing that bothers me about this book is that it is largely a commercial. There is a significant amount of good info in the book--worth the purchase price. There are many "free" resources listed. But they are largely an on-ramp to paid consulting or membership fees. This book is geared toward professional pastoral staff and church decision makers, so volunteers will learn something but not be in a position to implement many of the teachings. "Replicate" and "Growing Up" are better choices for everyday churchgoers who want to become stronger disciples who make disciples. But senior pastors and discipleship pastors with the ability to make decisions and invest in consulting could benefit greatly from "Movement-Ready Church."

Review of advance copy received from Netgalley

Full disclosure: I have family that attends Long Hollow Church where Pastor Robby pastors. The reason I mention is that there is material out there to help pastors/churches that is written by people that have great theories but have not put them into practice. Pastor Robby and Long Hollow live and breathe this material and it is impacting the community.

Gallaty and Green will lead you through real life examples, funny stories, transparency on what worked and didn’t work in their experience, and most importantly, from a heart to see people become disciples of Christ.

This is not a “Follow Our Plan” style book. This is a challenge that deals with the heart issues and structural issues of our churches that keep us from being disciple-makers that create disciple-makers.

My advice: Don’t consume this book. Slow down. Read. Contemplate. Pray. Re-read the chapter again. Do not race through this book. Even better, go through this book with a group from your church.

Every pastor, church volunteer, and member need to read this important book. It is time for the Body of Christ to be about our Father’s business in fulfilling the Great Commission.

I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.

Movement Ready Church by Robby Gallaty and Vick Green is exactly the kind of book the local church needs right now. In a ministry landscape that can easily become routine and inward-focused, Gallaty and Green offer something genuinely refreshing — a clear-eyed, practical vision for positioning a church for movement. What sets this book apart is its sheer practicality; this isn't a collection of lofty ideals, but real, actionable frameworks you can apply regardless of your church's size or context. The appendixes alone are worth the price of the book, serving as ready-made tools you'll return to again and again. This is not a book you read once and shelve — it's a desk book you keep within arm's reach, dog-ear, highlight, and revisit each season of ministry. If you care about the health and mobilization of your church, do yourself a favor and pick this up.

Quality book. Closer to 3.5 stars. A seasoned discipleship-focused senior pastor teams with a strategist-systems thinker to identify church-wide steps to become more effective at discipleship. Lots of practical advice. Think Will Mancini 2.0. A bit heavy on “download and work on this pdf.” Recommended. Especially useful if new to leadership of church discipleship efforts. Good diagnostic questions scattered throughout for more experienced pastors.
