I try running. Although, being able to keep up with the wolves all my life is no match for a perilous man that moves with the shadows. The universe is pushing us together, begging for us to rekindle a love from a past lifetime. I don’t want to defy it. I want our bodies molded, our hearts beating in tandem and thumping their melody into each other. But I’m prone to getting dragged into the swallowing darkness—and I’m grieving while processing trauma.
I cannot fall into another monster’s trap.
Jax
The most captivating and darkly ethereal woman to walk this Earth is haunting my mind, eradicating the ruthless wrath that has plagued my life and turned me into a merciless zombie. She’s mine. And she’s aware of that. She just… needs time. Perhaps a blood contract. My vendetta has granted me incredible patience. But the cord keeping it tethered to my conscience grows impossibly thin the longer I watch her, the more I map out her feminine vessel.
She may just make it snap.
Author’s this book ends on a cliffhanger and contains potentially triggering CWs.
I’m sorry I must not have read the same book as everyone based on these reviews or my comprehension and reading skills have declined drastically.
This book has no flow and is all over the place. My biggest issue was the writing style and incomplete sentences, which made reading this feel disjointed or disconnected. Also, I feel like it’s a copy and paste of Haunting Adeline just with dogs instead of people? Stalker- check, breaking into her home- check, leaving her flowers- check, tech guy assisting with operations-check, uncovering and taking down a “ring”network- check.
Nothing about the FMC was interesting, because she isn’t really described 12 chapters in and so much happens in a short period of time that maybe should have evolved throughout the story. The MMC seemed interesting but again too much revealed so early on doesn’t really give good plot development to me. Also, I’m not a fan of insta-lust/love anymore, because there ends up being no real chemistry between the MCs.
I’m 12 chapters in and the FMC was basically graped, goes to the club right after, attends festivals, grandparents were killed, and shes already into the MMC and he’s practically in love with her? Huh? I couldn’t get past both festival scenes because they felt disconnected and honestly served no purpose to the plot.
I was extremely excited to read this based on the reviews but unfortunately I can’t bring myself to finish.

A MUST READ ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 first let me say this book has been added to my top shelf, where i keep all my absolute favorites. i will definitely be rereading this again in the near future. the writing by author madison jo is the definition of perfection. i look forward to reading everything she puts out from now on! i LOVED the dark moody aesthetic described throughout the book. the main characters, tala & jax, stole my fucking heart. book 1 in this series does leave off on a majorrr cliff hanger, so make sure you have book 2 reading to go! byeee i need to go read what happens next 🖤
4.5 stars ~ and let me start by saying the only reason this isn’t 5 stars is because the second book is my literal roman empire, soooo i’m saving the 5 for that
if you like the cat and mouse duet you will 100% love this. i didn’t even like that duet and i still loved this, but it will definitely be a hit for that type of reader.
wtwc is a dark stalker romance with suspense, mystery/plot, spice, and a true ‘twin flames’ love. it’s the first part of a duet and ends on a pretty massive cliffhanger…so have the next book ready! the relationship is definitely insta-obsessed but the tension gets drawn out, so the pacing is still great. just trust me
⋆。°✩ "kissing tala made heaven cry and hell spit fire" ⋆。°✩
jax scythe. no words, really. he’s everything you would ever want in a dark romance mmc. morally gray (kills people…but only the bad ones who participate in dogfighting. which, first of all, is such a unique concept and i literally loved it. i didn’t know much about that scene until reading this book), sooo obsessive/possessive of the fmc, stalker (but…respectful), tattooed, tall, sexy as fuck, loves his girl more than the world. and he’s patient! the fmc has some trauma going into this book and jax handles it well (“let me in that darkness, baby” 😮💨). bonus points for having the cutest dog ever.
⋆。°✩ "i will never hurt you. i’ll break you in ways that you beg more of. but baby, your heart won’t ever be one" ⋆。°✩
tala akira huxley (little wolf). my girllllll ugh i love her so bad. she’s strong and grows so much through this book (and the next one), funny, hot af, makes the mmc work for it, and has a killer aesthetic. i would love her just for her vibes alone. but honestly the depth of her character and her inner struggles made the book just so good. her and jax are top tier
basically you can tell im a huge fan of this book. please read it, you won’t regret it. madison jo is an auto buy author for me now 🫠
5 out of 5 on Spice 🥵 and storyline. First book is top tier! Highly recommend for possessive love trope. Very well written, strong character development, and possible other books in development?! The story will suck you into the pack of wolves where you belong. You will 1 million percent become too attached to each person’s story. The story makes me want to rescue wolves, learn martial arts, and take down every evil abuser out there.
Each protagonist digs their hooks into you and becomes a part of your soul. Jax is the shadow daddy we all deserve. Possessive, morally grey, mentally sound, protective, animal lover the list goes on. Is it possible for him to get any better, sexier?….yes….and he does!! He’s definitely a tree I’d climb.
Tala “the sexy siren” excellent female protagonist. You get the sense of her expressive personality very quickly. Intelligent, charismatic and slightly jaded. She has her faults but watching her grow and develop has me wanting more. I feel her pain and anxiety with the loss of her grandparents and the wolves.
You want to become attached and have your heart ripped out. Read this book. Just don’t drool too much. Can’t wait to start the second!!

I truly wish I could give a 100 star review. Jax and Tala’s story has had me in a chokehold since page ONE. Their story is so enchanting and enticing that I can just sit back and play it like a movie. This book has the perfect amount of pace with the best amount of plot and detail (and spice 😉). I LOVE me an obsessive morally grey man who will do anything for his girl. He’s so sleep token coded too (and massive attack bc the obsession and possessiveness is THERE and I’m HERE FOR IT) 😩😩 I absolutely love the fact that Tala is such a strong, independent, smart, kind, courageous, determined QUEEN. I honestly don’t know if I want to be Tala or Jax more. Can I just have both of them??
The spice? 10/5 Sexual tension? 10/5 Banter? 10/5 Plot? 10/5
I promise (and warn you) that you will FEEL everything Jax and Tala feel, experience and do. They will forever live rent free in my mind 🖤
MJ you truly have a beautiful gift for writing, I love how detailed and captivating you are 🖤
Loved this book! If you love Haunting Adeline or any other book of the stalkerish sort then you HAVE to give this a read! Make sure to have the second book ready to read right after! The story is fast paced but with a perfect amount of detail and plot. I want to be called “little wolf” now♥️
This book took me forever to finish because I didn’t want it to end😩 Jax scythe the man you are😮💨😮💨 he is 100% my new favorite book bf. He is insane and obsessed with tala in all the best ways! This book is so underrated I can’t recommend this book enough
I don't usually write reviews, but this book deserves 10 stars. I instantly fell in love with everything about it. The story is chief's kiss. Tala and Jax's relationship is beautiful! I don't want to say too much and spoil anything. This book will live rent-free in my mind! Do not get me started on the writing. Madison has a literal gift! Do yourself a favor and just read it. You won't regret it! I am so excited to start the next book!!
When the wolves cry is one of those books that will stick with you forever. It's one that I wish I could read again for the first time. Jax and Tala's story will enchant you. The plot is very different than your typical dark romance. I don't think I could say one bad thing about this book or anything that Madison writes. Jax is obbessive, morrally gray but would do anything for Tala. Their love is so addicting, and I can still remember each scene as if it were a movie in my mind. Jax Scythe would do anything for Tala and Tala would do anything for the ones she loves. She's strong, determined, smart, courageous. The wolves hold a special place in Tala's story and I truly can say that I've never read something like this before. It's seductive, enchanting, beautiful, so many things. A MUST READ.
This was my first ever dark romance, and oh. my. gosh — what an incredible introduction to the genre! I seriously couldn’t have picked a better book to throw me headfirst into all the gritty, twisted, deliciously chaotic vibes. I loved every single second of it. The pacing? Addictive. The tension? Unbearable in the best way. And that final incorporation of the wolves?? Absolute perfection. It added such a wild, intense edge that had me feral by the end (in a good way, obviously). And JAX??? Don’t even get me started. OH MY GOOOOOOOSH. 🫣🔥❤️ He was dark, magnetic, dangerous, and somehow still had me swooning and short-circuiting every time he showed up. I’m unwell. If you’re even thinking about diving into dark romance, let this be your sign. When the Wolves Cry devoured me — and I loved every second of being destroyed.
