The Flowering Spirit is a new translation of Fushikaden, the fifteenth-century classic text by Zeami, founder of the No theater. Written sometime between 1400 and 1418, Fushikaden became a secret, sought-after guide to life for Zeami's acting troupe. Even 200 years later, the only people with access to this work were actors and the samurai class. Not until the latter part of the 19th century did Fushikaden gradually begin to make its way into the hands of the general public. Although Fushikaden is about No drama, Zeami incorporates into his text his philosophical outlook on the art of life - "the way" - and how one goes about living according to these principles, providing invaluable teachings on the aesthetics and spiritual culture of Japan. No was the art form of choice for the samurai class; and many of its principles echo those of martial arts. Zeami brought his wide-ranging education in Zen Buddhism, his knowledge of classical Japanese poetry, and his exposure to the aristocratic lifestyle to his writing of this classic work. Why should a modern reader read The Flowering Spirit? No drama encapsulates all aspects of Japanese culture-from its sensitivity, to its spirituality (Shinto, Buddhism), to its literary culture, and finally to its warrior culture. The work explains how actors should approach their craft, but also how to approach life. Reading The Flowering Spirit will offer unique insight into the soul of Japan from an utterly unique perspective. William Scott Wilson has contributed several important adjunct pieces to Zeami's classic work -- an Introduction about the history of No drama, copious notes explaining the background of the book, an appendix containing a translation of one of Zeami's greatest plays Atsumori, and an Afterword that connects No drama with the warrior class. Wilson's impeccable translation adds fluidity to Zeami's writing that has never before been accomplished in English.

Sadece tiyatro topluluğu içerisinde gizli tutulmakta iken, 19. Yüzyılda açığa çıkmış ve Kurosava’nın da etkilendiği metinler, bir çok sanatçının da el kitabı haline gelmiş. Sanata ve hayata dair öğretiler içeriyor.

A few GR friends asked me about No (Noh) play. I've only watched it live once. I remembered this book by Zeami and am pleasantly surprised it is translated into English. However, my library doesn't carry it. So I downloaded and read the Japanese original here.

The original is short (22 pages). I guess this book contains introduction and notes, and I also see it contains one of the Noh script, Atsumori, which is derived from The Tale of the Heike. (Actually, I mentioned that famous story is my review of Heike. Glad this translator picked that one.)

Zeami focuses on entertaining the audience, because he believes what delights people delights the divinity as well. His aesthetic is symbolized in "flower." When you are young and beautiful, you have the natural grace (flower). The challenge is how to keep and improve on this natural grace into older age.

While he repeatedly says that it's hard to explain in words, Zeami presents some examples, such as: when you play an old man, don't crouch. That's not beautiful. Express the age in more graceful ways. Likewise, when you play an angry person, keep a gentle, resilient mind. Anger expressed blatantly is not beautiful. Everything must be beautiful on the stage.

Zeami aims to deliver to the audiences, but he doesn't cater to them. And what supports the delivery? Plain old practice and good thinking. That's the *secret*.

Well, I ought to stop before spilling all the beans. If you are really, seriously interested in No play, you might also like Japanese Nō Dramas.

İthaki'nin yayınladığı Japon Klasiklerine bu kitapla başlamış oldum.Ama bu ne bir roman nede bir öyküdür.Noh tiyatrosunu ve çiçek kavramlarını detaylı bir şekilde anlatan bir makale. Açıkcası bu sanata dair herhangi bir şey bilmiyorsanız benim gibi 80 sf kitapla sınanırsınız.

Kitabı yazan abimiz bu kitabı okuduğumu (özellikle Noh sanatını ilk defa duyan biri olarak) bilse sinirden kafayı yerdi sanırım...

zeami would be pissed if he found out I had this book, and more so to learn that I have no plans on pursuing the art, and was merely reading it to become more erudite.

The other reviews are somewhat misleading--at least one refers to Wilson's book that combines a translation of FUSHI KADEN (transmitting the flower) with the warrior play Atsumori. This work by the French Japanologist René Sieffert is a longer and more varied collection, a good one-volume introduction to noh. The present volume contains a translation of FUSHI KADEN and other selections from Zeami's theoretical writings--for which readers of English will now want to refer to Tom Hare's Zeami: Performance notes. It then presents a classic program of noh--more than one can now see in one day. 1: A god" noh play IWAFUNE, followed by a kyogen comedy about a god of stone (ISHIGAMI). 2: A warrior noh (SANEMORI) followed by the comedy BUAKU. 3: A woman noh (YUGAO, based on Genji), followed by the comedy KAGYU (the snail). 4: A miscellaneous fourth-type play SEMIMARU followed by the comedy OBA GA SAKE (auntie's rice wine). 5: A final (fifth-type) demon play SESSHOSEKI ("The killing stone"). A handy collection. Sieffert also published a very large collection of noh and kyogen translations in two volumes.

Genel bir okuyucu kitlesine hitaben yazılmamış zaten. Çok içeriğine bakmadan alıp okudum. Yazarın hedefi noh tiyatrosuna dair önemli noktaları sadece yeteneği olan kişilere aktarabilmek. O yüzden benim gibi noh tiyatrosunu pek de sevmeyen birinin bu kitabı değerlendirmesi pek doğru degil diye düşünüyorum. Noh tiyatrosuna ilginiz varsa belki okuyabilirsiniz. Yine de çok da zaman kaybı olarak görmedim, zaten kısa bir kitap, bilgi bilgidir.

Çiçek çok önemli. Kitap bu kadar. Ezoterik bir öğreti olduğunu iddaa ederek yazılmış buna karşın bir o kadar boş bir o kadar da sıkıcı bir kitap. Son zamanlarda modern japon tiyatrosuna ilgim olduğu için geçmişini merak edip okudum, çerezlik kitap zaten. Yalnızca bir performans sanatı değil, aynı zamanda bir felsefesi de var Noh tiyatrosunun. İyi iş Zeamicim.

This is a translation of the Fushikaden written by the famous actor/troupe leader Zeami who lived in the 15th century. Zeami wrote many of the plays that we know of today as Noh, and led one of the leading Noh schools of his day.

Fushikaden is a famous treatise on Noh. Be aware, however, that Fushikaden is focused on the art of Noh acting. It gets into some other aspects but it doesn’t delve deeply into form, format, text, etc. It provides a bit of general information about Noh, but it primary focused on preserving acting tips for his players. Zeami’s advice on Noh performance, however, is very tied in with Zen Buddhism, so his tips, written in an engaging manner, are presented almost as a lifestyle manual.

Granted, the introduction does provide a high-level overview of Noh. I don’t speak Japanese, but the text reads very clearly and smoothly. Wilson includes a translation of Zeami’s Atsumori, one of my favorite Noh plays, at the end of the book. His translation if very good. It has a poetical quality, and it includes the interlude which most translators do not include because it is not considered part of the literary text of the play.

Overall, The Spirit of Noh is a pretty good introduction to Noh. As I mentioned, however, it is very focused on the acting which, as a 21st century American who has never seen a live Noh performance, is of limited interest. (I’m more interested in the form and text.) The translation of Atsumori is very good, and I’d love to see Wilson translate more plays. While this is a good book, but I think there may be more helpful introductions to Noh. The Fushikaden itself, as opposed to the introduction and the play translation, are probably of interest to someone more experienced with/interested in Noh theatre.

Another of Bill Wilson's excellent translations. See my other reviews of his titles for a fuller appreciation. The thing here is that No/Noh has such a fascinating role in Japanese culture. It's almost as if it's an expression of Freud's "id", and thus reveals so beautifully the passions and motivations of the country and his people. Best for those already charmed by all this, though.

Do not study with this translation. It obfuscates important nuances and even misunderstands and misinterprets crucial core concepts. TOXIC translation.

I automatically buy all of Wilson's translations and enjoy them very much. As a martial artist this one is less down my alley than some, but still a fascinating read.
