With this third entry in the Mischief Mayhem Want and Woe series, Kelley continues a story that only he can write. The author blends horror, bizarro, humor and splatter together with effortless grace and ease, creating his own genre. It’s truly a breath of fresh air that stands out like a diamond in a midnight sky for readers who want their imaginations pushed to the edge.
Poor Chuggie… all he wants—aside from unlimited alcohol—is to get home. The intricacy of this task is promethean…and that’s putting it lightly. Although it had me grasping at straws in places, and I found some of the splatter being too much, it’s hard to put down. It actually challenges your imagination, which is a rare commodity in fiction, and one of the highest compliments I can give. The characters, worlds and dimensions are so unique that even devotees of Lovecraft will stop and say: “Damn, son!”
Kelley has successfully crafted his own universe—or is it universes?—into a series that leaves you wanting more. This was my first experience with Chuggie and the predilections that accompany him, but it won’t be my last. I’m looking forward to reading the first two in the series, and sincerely hope there’s a fourth in the works.
From the first sentence, you know you’re dealing with an author that truly appreciates and respects reader’s imaginations, yet another rare commodity. With Kelley, all bets are off, and we’re all the richer for it. How someone like Kelley flew under my radar is beyond me, but I’m very happy that’s been corrected.
