Two hearts, one Can a quiet woodworker and a struggling author carve out a love story together?

Ryan Devlin loves his life in Caldwell Crossing. His career as a woodworker is fulfilling, and his close-knit group of friends are like brothers to him. Ryan is quiet and introverted and not interested in making changes to his life and his routines—not when he still struggles with memories of childhood bullying and feelings of inadequacy. But when his sister needs to relocate a short-stay guest because of a plumbing emergency at her rental house and asks to use Ryan’s cabin, how can he say no?

Adam Nelson comes to Caldwell Crossing to finish writing the latest book in his cozy murder mystery series—after the last one was trashed in a viral review. He needs peace and quiet and to be left undisturbed. So why can’t he stay away from the handsome woodworker whose workshop is next door to the gorgeous lakeside cabin he’s staying in?

As Ryan and Adam connect and their friendship shifts into something more, can they decide whether to trust their growing feelings and put their faith into the fate that brought them together?

Love Notes contains an introverted, dyslexic woodworker, a writer pretending to his agent that everything is under control, found family, best friends, and a cat with no name.

*3.5 stars*

I love Lisa Henry, but I tend to like her more angsty or grittier romances, and Love Notes is the opposite of that. Though I started off feeling meh about the story, I'll admit that it grew on me more and more, and I ended up almost giving it 4-stars.

The whole story was just... cozy.

First of all... I almost died when I found out the MC had dyslexia and dyscalculia. Not only are MCs with disabilities some of my favorites stories to read, but my own kids both have dyslexia, and my older daughter also had dyscalculia, so I know this subject very well. Lisa Henry did a really nice job with her disability rep, and I felt really close to Ryan as a result. However, I think this part of the story could have been explored even more, especially since Ryan has so much anxiety and feelings of low self-worth as a result.

I am also not a fan of fast-burn romances, and the pace of Adam and Ryan's romance was pretty quick here. Like... insanely quick. I liked that they just fit together with no drama, but I always feel more attached to a couple in a slow-burn romance. But despite that, these two MCs were adorable together. Just small town, sweet romance with almost no angst. This is the PERFECT palate cleanser book for when you've read too many heavy romances that have made you cry your eyes out.

A sweet book with almost no drama, Love Notes will be perfect for someone looking for a small-town, cozy read.

This was a really cute short story!!!

I loved the small town setting and the description of the scenery sounded so nice that I wanted to go there myself.

Ryan's woodworking sounded amazing too, and him and Adam together were so sweet. I loved how they just immediately fell into domestic bliss living together, but were also smart enough to acknowledge that it could just be the fact that Adam was only supposed to be a temporary guest to town.

I did not care for Ryan's sister though!! The way she just asks Ryan to go sleep on a camping bed in his workshop for over a month with no kitchen facilities or bathroom facilities left me scratching my head. Does she not care about her brother's basic needs in life at all??

It felt a little strange to me, especially because she doesn't really thank him, she just offers to bake cookies like that will help him shower, go to the bathroom, or feed himself for six weeks.... Didn't particularly understand that part except the forced proximity was needed for Ryan and Adam's story! Adam's lack of reaction to finding out he's basically made Ryan homeless while he's in town also felt a bit weird.

Other than that bugging me, I really liked these two getting to know each other and the town sounded so cute. I'm also intrigued enough to want to read the other stories in this multi author series too, and that hasn't happened for a while!

We were as comfortable as a couple that had been together for years. Other people had vacation romances—I apparently had a vacation long-term husband.

“Anyone can make a good impression for a short period of time, but what if I’m really awful?” He tilted his head. “I’ve seen you in the mornings before coffee. You think you’re hiding anything?” I snorted out a laugh. “Maybe not.”

“Thank you too. For this morning, and for everything else.” He studied his burger intently. “It’s been really good. You being here.” I bet a professional interrogator in a Cold War movie armed with a bright lamp and some truth serum wouldn’t be able to get many more words out of Ryan.

His dick slipped out of me, and I swallowed my complaint when he lifted my legs onto his shoulders and pushed inside me again. Now he had the leverage to go harder and deeper, and he did. I gripped the pillow with one hand and started to stroke myself with the other, gazing up at him through half-lidded eyes.

And then the mood shifted again, as the heat rising between us stole our laughter and replaced it with a desperate need. I got a knee between Adam’s, and he thrust against me, his cock as hot as a branding iron. I kissed the side of his jaw, then scraped my teeth against the skin there just to feel him shudder against me.

Sweet ending for this small town series

I liked this a lot, there wasn't any stupid misunderstandings or miscommunication, just two quiet and mainly solitary men finding love.

The dyslexia element was handled really well imho, with Ryan's feelings about it making complete sense and how his fears kept him from telling Adam.

I also liked that Ben's viral bad review of Adam's book was also resolved in this instalment.

Overall this has been a very sweet series with four solid romances.

I love Lisa Henry's stories - they are usually full of grit. This one was underwhelming though - and not one of my favorites. A bummer, since if I'm honest, this is the one title I expect the most from this series.

The ease and speed of Ryan and Adam getting together was RIDICULOUS, especially when the two characters were described as shy and introverts before. I also felt really disappointed that Ryan's struggle with dyslexia and unworthiness wasn't deeply explored - like there was NO MEATY conversation with Adam about this especially with Adam being somebody, whose life depends on WORDS.

I felt that it was wasted opportunities *hmph*

But I still liked the friendship and there was an unamed cat here! I am going with weak 3 stars.

We saw a peek of Adam in Sam's book but I didn't really see how it would all connect until now. It's making sense in retrospect. And I like him and Ryan as a couple. I like how interconnected the books are, this is a very cool multi-author series in that regard because all the books fit well with each other.

This is the perfect book when you want something that’s not too long, has two wonderful main characters, with a touch of steam and lots of sweet and it’s set in a small town with an interesting cast of side characters.
Love can be expressed in a multitude of ways. Adam excels at writing love notes - he is an author after all - whilst Ryan is the master of carving intricate love tokens whether it be whittling the perfect alien or carving a beautiful lily. Circumstances have them living under the same roof and not too long after sharing the same bed. Their romance is low angst with low steam and bucket loads of sweet. It’s a very enjoyable read and a great way to fill in a few hours. This is part of a multi author series so expect glimpses of the 3 other stories in the series.

The book is written against the background of the Harmony Lake series. All four of the boys are here, Sam and Haider, with their new beaus, Conor and Ryan. It's a beautiful thing to see how Sam, Haider, and Conor 'adopted' Ryan, when he was a child and at his lowest. Over the years, they have helped him endlessly. They're always there for him.

This new story is simply a lovely romance. Both Adam and Ryan have massive downers on themselves, neither having any self-confidence. Ryan, especially, is incredibly hard on himself. Due to an abusive father, he believes he is worthless and good for nothing. When Adam comes along, there is an instant attraction, which eventually turns into a gentle love story. Their relationship unfolds so sweetly and organically, with a sweet epilogue.

Our fourth and final friend finds his person and bring this series full circle by bringing the author that Ben roasted in book 1 to Caldwell Crossing! I love how their love story evolves and how both men use their innate skills to show their affection for each other... I love how strong Ryan is and how he handles his dyslexia and dyscalculia in such a positive way and that he has built such a strong and supportive network.

Most of the angst in this book comes from Ryan's insecurity about sharing his differences in learning with Adam, which I think is a fairly typical pattern... I love how both men build each other up and are so positive in their growing attraction and affection.

As much as I hate the idea of leaving Harmony Lake, this book encapsulated all the best things about the town and the men who have made up this series and leaves you just a little more positive that if the world had more Harmony Lakes it would be a much better place.

A cute low angst small town romance of a woodworker and an author who ends up taking over his home on vacation due to bursting pipe. Ryan's friends all have been pairing up, leaving him feeling unsettled, not knowing if his long-time friends will stay in Harmony Lake. Adam needed a vacation to regroup and get past his writers block after a not so pleasant review that he begrudgingly agreed with in parts. Lisa does a beautiful job in handling Ryans dyslexia & dyscalcuia in showing the tools he uses to overcome and strive in his business. Adam, unaware of this, leaves him love notes, that he has his friends dicepheir. Loved the simplicity of this relationship and the build-up for them to move forward in their relationship. The relationship didn't feel forced. it just naturally went the course needed .

Love Notes contains an introverted, dyslexic woodworker, a writer pretending to his agent that everything is under control, found family, best friends, and a cat with no name.

Readers please note that this book is part of the four book series set in fictional town of Harmony Lake and each one is ( I believe, I have not read other three books just looked at the covers and read the blurbs) devoted to one guy in the group of four childhood friends finding love.  I cannot be sure, but I think that the timelines of each book run very close to each other.

Review:

Dear Lisa Henry,

I enjoy your contemporary stories and as I may have mentioned before contemporary m/m romances are my least favorite m/m subgenre.  It is just I often feel that often in the contemporary the potential couple is not "busy enough". I exclude busy enough in bed in this statement. I am often bored when I read contemporary. Luckily this was not true here.  Ryan was an interesting and likable character.  I enjoyed the passion he put inn his work. I sympathized a lot with his dyslexia related struggles. I also really liked his friends and may even check out their books. They seemed genuinely sweet and treated each other as friends should be treating each other in my mind.

I liked Adam too, even though I was tempted to roll my eyes at "being traumatized by the review" storyline.  To author's credit it ended up being a bit more complex than I was worried about initially, but the temptation to roll my eyes remained in a sense that I have no idea why the reviewer would be "feeling bad" at all in the first place. If you trashed the author as a person, if you mentioned anything about them as a person you as a reviewer deserve all the scorn you will get, but it was made very clear that this reviewer stuck to the substance of the book and even Adam acknowledged that he was right.  I do not even mind Adam's behavior when they met in person, he was nice enough, but man, just stay away from the reviews, problem solved no?

Honestly though, my main issue with this book is very Insta Love. It was so so fast. And again, I don't mind fast *attraction*, but it felt as if they felt in love ( and moved in together !) after their second if not the first date and they were already day dreaming about something more.

They were lovely together though once they were together. Conflict was very believable to me even if resolved with one conversation which makes sense considering how the conflict could have been and was resolved.

Grade: B-

The Love notes were romantic, but the intended target could not read them

This is a sweet romance that feels serendipitous between a man whose father shamed him for not being able to read properly and left his family for another woman, and what Ryan feared was his attempt to have a better son because of his condition.

Ryan has dyslexia, the reading disorder, and dyscalculia, a learning disability that impairs his ability to understand and work with numbers.

Lisa Henry's masterful construction of this story includes an author who shares some of the same struggles. The plot follows Ryan accepting his sister's plea to let a paying guest stay in her rented cabin after a water leak damaged the place just before his arrival.

The guest is Adam Nelson, an author who has used Caldwell Crossing as the setting for his murder mysteries. (Imaging an author writing a story about an author!) He suffered when a highly critical review went viral, calling out inaccuracies in the descriptions of the town and the circumstances of his first murder mystery set there.

He comes to Caldwell Crossing to write another murder mystery with genuine details about the community and its people. He finds the place charming, especially Ryan, who gave up his cabin so his sister's guest could stay there to write his book. Ryan ends up sleeping in his woodworking shop.

Eventually, the chemistry between the two men leads to more time spent in Ryan's cabin. While Adam leaves love notes for Ryan as they grow closer, he doesn’t realize Ryan cannot read them because of his cursive handwriting. Nor does he know that Ryan struggled to read his first book about Caldwell Crossing, despite Adam's suggestion.

Their romance is touching and develops naturally. Adam is impressed with Ryan's strong friendships—the bonds formed with the boys he met on his first day of school that have lasted for decades—and he becomes part of that close-knit, all-gay friend group deeply rooted in Caldwell Crossing.

It’s a great read, in Lisa Henry’s signature style, and I only put it down because I had to sleep. This promises to be a fantastic series, which is why her previous works are so compelling to me. The vivid descriptions, meaningful connections, and avoidance of overused tropes kept me engaged throughout this quick read.

First off, Love Notes is part of the Harmony Lake series, but each can be read as a standalone. I haven't read the other books in the series, yet there was enough about the other three guys in this friends-since-childhood group (almost too much) that I didn't feel lost.

This one is about woodworker Ryan Devlin and author Adam Nelson, who, thanks to broken pipes at Ryan's sister's rental, is renting Ryan's cabin by the lake in hopes of finishing his next novel there. (Adam isn't aware at first that he's temporarily displaced Ryan, though it doesn't take him long to figure it out). They have quite the meet-awkward, and in subsequent encounters, it doesn't take long for their mutual attraction to make itself known. While their relationship does move pretty quickly, they're also realistic about the fact that Adam's time at Harmony Lake has an expiration date - which is resolved at some point, as they do get their HEA.

Love Notes was a smooth and easy read about what is really a sweet relationship. As someone with aphantasia, I loved the descriptions of the beautiful setting and of Ryan's intricate woodworking. I also appreciated the disability rep and the realistic depictions of being owned by a cat. And it was great that the misunderstanding between Ryan and Adam, which I won't spoil, was resolved quickly rather than being drawn out.

This one was probably closer to 4.5 stars for me, but what made me round down was the whole situation with Ryan's sister guilting him into letting her rent out his cabin/home to Adam for six weeks, with only cookies in exchange. I get that it was done to help get the guys together, but it just seemed so unfathomable to me - Ryan agreeing to it, his sister not even offering him another place to stay (with a shower) for six weeks or some decent compensation, and Adam being so unbothered when he finds out he's displaced Ryan. There are other things about Ryan that make him a sympathetic character, and seeing him treated basically like a doormat was an issue for me.

A big thanks to the author for the chance to read and review this book!

I’m so happy Ryan has his story, where there were hints throughout the other books who would be his love interest of course, it was great to finally get his whole story.

You cannot not love Ryan and his protectiveness of his friends, his gentle soul, his insecurity. Bring in Adam, the hotshot very uncertain of himself author. A review brings him back to the roots of his stories, this little town where he has set his series in.

Finding more then the love for writing again and the connection with his characters, he also finds a gentle soul who is happiest in his wood workshop, who is a wonderful friend to his “brothers”, who offered his home to an author who has lost his mojo and seeks piece and quiet.

It is a wonderful journey to see Ryan and Adam giving into the attraction that is there. It is lovely to see their feelings grow over the pages of this story.

I just wish the story would have been a bit longer. Where in the book before this one, you found glimpses of the other relationships, this one felt as it started ane. I can imagine in the timeline but I guess I just would have loved a bit more with the friends hence my remark that I think it would have benefited a few more pages so to speak. I would have loved to have read mpre with all of them being together. It kind of ended kind of quickly and a bit rushed in my opinion.

This obviously is personal and doesn’t reflect on my rating or enjoyment of reading this story and this whole series.

Like I mentioned before I still loved Ryan and Adam coming together the addition of a wonderful cat and snippets of situations that happened over time. (Shout out to Ben, go you for speaking up! )

Definitely recommend this book but most definitely the whole series for sure!

Who known perhaps we are lucky and one day these authors will return to this lovely town and their inhabitans.

If you are going to read all four books in the related series, this would be considered the last of the four, but it can easily be read without having read any of the others.

I loved this! They are so sweet together and I like that they manage to avoid any unnecessary drama when Ryan finally reveals his dyslexia to Adam. I do wish that Ryan had a little more confidence in himself that he didn't keep that a secret for so long, but it's not like I don't have things that are far less troubling from my childhood that I don't want to speak about so I have no room to talk there. I love all the side characters, not just the MCs from the other books, but Ryan's sister and his old teacher (even if he is a very minor character). I'd love to read more about Ryan and his apprentice!
I'm not often a fan of multiple author series for lots of reasons, but this actually made me want to read the other books so it was not only successful in itself, but also in making me interested in all the books. I liked the way their relationship evolved, it felt very natural, and not instalove at all, which can be difficult when the time the book takes place in is not very long as in this case. I also really wouldn't mind hearing more about Adam's dad, he sounds fun! I guess that's my favorite part of the book, even minor characters interested me enough to want more of them! I always enjoy Henry's writing, she writes wonderful, relatable characters living normal everyday lives and makes me believe in them.

4.25 stars!

This is part of the Harmony Lake multi author series and features Ryan, a woodworker who moved to Caldwell Crossing, near Harmony Lake, as a pre-teen where even though he’d rather have been whisked away by aliens than moving there, met three boys who would remain his best friends far into adulthood.

When Adam, a well known mystery writer, took an extended vacation to Harmony Lake for inspiration on his popular series based on the area, the last thing he expected was to find himself living in the gorgeous lakefront cabin that belonged to Ryan while the handsome woodworker stayed in his workshop. It wasn’t long before sparks were flying and he was leaving Ryan little love notes and realizing he was never gonna be able to forget Ryan OR Harmony Lake.

This was my first book in the Harmony Lake world but I really enjoyed it, between the people and the description of the town, it had me feeling a sweet sense of nostalgia, wanting to go back and live there forever. It was pretty low heat with only one really steamy scene which will appeal to readers who prefer less intimate scenes while still wanting a good storyline. I personally prefer a bit more heat so for me it’s a 4.25 star read.

I received a copy of this book for free but am voluntarily leaving a review.

A wonderful read in the Harmony Lake series. It's fairly low angst but for a teensy but at the end when a misunderstanding/secret is revealed but all ends well.
Adam is visiting Harmony Lake to try and help with the writing of his next book and, because of a flooded basement, end up staying in Ryan's home as he's too nice to his sister (whose rental cottage it was). Though they have a highly entertaining first couple of meetings, they soon settle into enjoying each other's company, in every way. What stops Ryan from enjoying it fully, is his secret of having bad dyslexia and dyscalcula.
I feel really bad for him as it was hard growing up and he really had his confidence beaten down but he has an amazing group of friends who are so supportive, along with his sister. The chemistry he shares with Adam sparks straight away and they are so comfortable together that it seems only natural that they are together.
it's a fairly quick romance but it feels right for the two of them and I like how all four of the friend's romances develop through the book but nothing is really given away.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Love Notes by Lisa Henry is the fourth and final book in the Harmony Lake series. I’ve read all but one of them (I need to change that!) and loved them all. Each book stands alone but I think they’re even better when read in order of publication (and I’m sorry I haven’t read Love Songs yet).

This one is very sweet and pretty much a slow-burn with non-explicit sexy time. I felt so bad for Ryan and his lack of confidence because of his dyslexia and dyscalculia. I loved how much he cared for and helped his sister with the home maintenance problems she had.

Adam is a great character! I love reading books with an author as one of the MCs and this one was really good. I always like to imagine that the actual author of the story (Lisa Henry in this case) has put more than a bit of themselves into it. 😊

This has been such a great series and I’m a little sad to know that it’s over.

An advanced copy of this book was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

Ryan had been bullied when he lived in FL and feared it was starting in NH, but instead he found his best friends. Ryan has a severe form of dyslexia that went undiagnosed in Fl, but was swiftly discovered in NH and he got the help he needed. While he can read print in the proper font, cursive is beyond his abilities.
Adan is a mystery writer that has come to Caldwell, NH to work on his latest book. His last book got some unfavorably reviews and he's skittish. Adam had contracted with Ryan's sister Rebecca to rent a cottage in town to write the book, but the night before he was to arrive a water pipe in the basement broke leaving the cottage unlivable. Rebecca bullies Ryan into moving into his woodworking shed and sleeping on a camping cot.
Adam and Ryan make a cute couple, and the lengths Ryan goes to in order to hide his dyslexia can be hysterical. Rebecca, on the other hand, is a bully and a female dog.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.5 stars

Love Notes is part of the Harmony Lake multi-author series and works fine as a standalone. I have not read any of the other books in the series and it seems that Ryan’s group of friends are the MCs throughout. This is a quiet, fast-moving story of two men finding the right person at the right time.

I feel like we learn more about Ryan than we do about Adam—after all, we are in Ryan’s town and in his home. But besides Adam’s occupation and what state he lived in, I didn’t feel I learned that much about him. The title is brought in as part of the story line, but even that lacked much depth. Everything moved fast and was too superficial for my tastes, but this book would work if you are looking for a small town romance that gets right to the point.

Oh my, LOVE NOTES was squishy, kick your feet together, sweetness. It has activated ✨️cute aggression✨️ in my brain. Ryan and Adam were DARLING.

Ryan is an introverted and lonely woodworker. His sister bullies him into sleeping in his studio while she rents out his cabin because of an emergency. The renters? That's Adam, the author with writer's block looking for absolutely no distractions.

The two of them hit it off like fireworks. It all happens super fast and feels like fate. I love Henry's storytelling because of the feeling it brings, and I just love how perfect these two were. Soulmates.

There's so much sweetness & the learning disability rep was well done.

One of the things I loved most was seeing Ryan let himself trust Adam. Swoon.

LOVE NOTES is out now! It's a short little after dinner read! A novella full of handwritten love notes and whittled aliens and a cat named Cat.

Note: Love Notes is a standalone within the multi-author Harmony Lake series.

This was a such a sweet story, without being saccharine, a touch of steam to offset the sweet. The main characters are both wonderful, individually and together. And the setting is the quintessential small town, full of interesting people and cozy vibes.

I loved the way they each showed their feelings for one another. For Ryan, it was in the creation of beautiful little carvings… the perfect little flower or a quirky alien. For Adam, it was in little love notes. The love notes become a central focus for the story, with Ryan having both dyslexia and dyscalculia. I do wish that aspect of the story had been explored a little more, as I feel like it informed Ryan’s character more than what was expressed. But I still loved the representation of it.

It’s a perfect read for when you want something not too long, something that will give you all the good feels.

Love Notes is a cozy summer romance based in the Harmony Lake collection. Ryan is a talented wood worker who unexpectedly has to give to up his house as a favor for his sister. Adam, who is a notable author, is taking a small trip to Harmony Lake to gather some inspiration for his detective book series based on Harmony Lake. After an hilariously awkward meeting the pair starts at entice romance.

Love Notes is very low on the Lisa Henry angst scale. It is quite enjoyable reading on a hot summer day. Love Notes will definitely be on my reread self with the rest of Lisa Henry’s books. However…Lisa Henry truly shines when she has some bite to her stories. She is one of the authors that can emotionally gut punch and you will be grateful for it. If you enjoy this story please check out more from her backlist!

Adam & Ryan
I absolutely adore every moment of this story! I can't say I was a huge fan of Ryan's sister, Rebecca, simply because of the way she forced Ryan's hand about his cabin, even if the eventual results were more than satisfactory.
These men were a perfect balance of one another in every way we were shown. I loved the way they interacted and worked together, especially as they navigated the space after Adam learned of Ryan's personal difficulties.

Love Notes is one of 4 best friend stories in a wonderful multi-author collaboration for the small town of Harmony Lake. It follows artistic woodworker, Ryan, and his quick and perfect relationship with visiting author, Adam. These men and their town were a pleasure to read, and though this story can be read as a standalone, I know it can only be enhanced by reading the other 3 as well, which I hope to catch up on soon.

I received an authorized copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.

This is the only book that I have read in this universe, I will need to fix that. This was a sweet, relatively low angst quick read. Ryan is a woodworker, and Adam is an author who has needs a vacation as he has writer's block. The cabin that he rents from Ryan's sister, the pipes burst, and he is then displaced. He ends up in another cabin but doesn't realize that it's Ryan's cabin & that he has now displaced Ryan. I'm glad that the "misunderstanding" was resolved quickly and wasn't dragged out. I did enjoy this book in this multi-author series & will most definitely pick up the others. Hopefully, they will be just as good.

I rec'd a copy of this book from the Author, and this is my honest review.

A great way to end what has been a great series. Unashamedly low angst and all about people finding their true love. It was refreshing to not have to deal with any heartbreak (well not much). This one completed the friends cycle with Ryan taking centre stage. Adam, a writer of cozy mysteries, comes to stay in Harmony Lake and because of a flood, is basically staying with Ryan. Their relationship starts with simple attraction and they grow over time to see each other for who they are, and as more then they see themselves. Very cute. I also love the fact that a sub-plot in the first story about Ben giving a bad review for a book and getting huge blow-back from the fandom, was actually Adam's book. Great fun. I wonder if we will come back to Harmony Lake again? Never say never dear authors.
