I'm going with 2.5 stars on this one.
Astarti is leashed to Belos. He has the power to leash people to him to gain control of them.
Not like that..but close. :P
He gained control of her at a young age since he has told her that her mother has abandoned her to die at birth. Hence she carries the Griever's mark (tattoo) on her neck.
The good first...

The bad:
I got so damn bored with the world building in this one. There is the drift..that humans? or drifters? who the hell knows can travel on..they can also draw weapons from it.
Then there is another current that Earthmakers can travel on.
I'm sorry..I got muddled up on it. I'm sure some troll will come and tell me how wrong I am.
Info dumping galore. I almost dnf'd the book but the main character was a strong one so I kept going.
The book end up in a big ole cliffhanger. I may pick up the second book just because I hate not knowing how things turn out.

My Summary:
Astarti was abandoned by her mother, and left with the Griever’s Mark, which is placed on those about to die or unwanted children. She was taken in by Belos, who is known by many names, the deal maker, the deceiver, the liar. He makes deals with people offering them power in exchange for them accepting his Leach, which in turn feeds his magic. When Astarti was young he Leached her and now she has no choice but to do as he says. Through the Leach he can always find her and even take over her mind and control her.
Belos and his seven are Earthmakers, another people with great powers, but after being banished by his people he’s learned the magic of humans as well, Drifting. Drifters and Earthmakers hate one another and they all fear Belos.
Astarti is sent to convince someone to make a deal with Belos when she meets a young warden Earthmaker. She knows she should kill him, but she can’t bring herself to. She hates belonging to Belos, but thinks escape is impossible. Is this young warden her enemy or could he help her somehow?
My Review:
I LOVED this book! I seriously think it could (should) be the next hugely popular young adult fantasy!
The Good:
The magic was awesome! And so unique! There are two kinds of magical people; Earthmakers and Drifters. Earthmakers have control over the elements and can travel over a distance within the life force of trees. Drifters can form weapons and energy, traveling through the drift, a web created by living creatures.
I draw my thoughts into myself and ease along my mooring, the glowing thread of energy that connects my physical body to the energy world of the Drift. Though every living thing has a mooring, and every living thing is part of the Drift, only Drifters can travel along their mooring to actually enter the Drift. Or to draw power from it.
The world building was excellent and expertly done. It starts with a medieval kingdom, but the entire world is fleshed out with different peoples and cultures. I particularly liked the floating islands of the Earthmakers.
From the first page I could tell how well written this book was and I thought Astarti had a great voice. She’s been abused, but she was still tough and proud. She’s never had anyone be truly nice to her before, but that doesn’t stop her from being a good person.
One thing Belos has taught me is that you collect information where you can and you don’t let anyone know that you know it.
Logan was also an awesome character. He had enough personality and spunk to go along with his mysterious tortured past. He’s rash and emotional and unlike most Earthmakers, but that’s what I liked about him. All of the minor characters were well done too too especially Belos and the Drifter King. (He has a long name starting with H and I can’t remember it.)
Griever’s mark has nice action scenes, from swords and spears to the magical battles. (and even a siege) I could picture the fighting perfectly and I didn’t have the desire to skim over anything.
The pacing was intense towards the end, though it’s all pretty fast paced, but I even forgot to eat I was so engrossed in the story. (and that’s saying something. Molly eats like a hobbit.)
The romance was well done, and I’m totally rooting for these two. I like them both and I really felt it. Their relationship went at just the right speed to be believable! This book made me have feelings! I swear I almost teared up!
The Bad:
It ends to be continued! Why?! I need more NOW! The next book comes out in the spring of 2015. (Which I know isn’t too long in the book world, but I can’t wait!)

THE GOOD.
●The female main character is Astarti. What I loved about her was that she realized her mistakes and fixed them. She's headstrong, stubborn, and kickass. A great protagonist.

This was a really interesting world, unique magic systems and even unique kingdoms within it. I liked the romance and the buildup to the moments I was hoping for for them.I loveddddd the secrets that came out throughout the book, secrets that I can tell will change so many things in the next book. There was lots of action and fighting and the ending broke my heart, to see one of the characters basically turned into everything they hated and feared. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

A delightfully imaginative, truly excellent YA fantasy, The Griever's Mark was a brilliant read that I absolutely loved. It had a richly built world, engaging character, and a few twists along the way. From start to finish, it was a fantastic read.
The world-building was great. The world that the author created was lush and drew me in completely to the story.
Astarti was a wonderful heroine. She was a dynamic character from the start. She held a lot of hate for the person that Belos had made her become, even as she fought him in her own small ways. Even with the Leash, she was determined to find a way to do what she felt was right. She was a strong, clever character and I really liked him.
Logan was just as great. He was impulsive and determined to do what he believed was right, even if that meant bending or breaking a few rules. He was wonderful, sweet and intent on protecting Astarti no matter what. I absolutely adored him.
The romance was very sweet. Astarti and Logan had a connection from the start and it only grew as they got to know each other. After that ending, I'm just hoping they can find a way to be together.
The plot was fast-paced and I was totally hooked the entire way through. There were plenty of twists along the way, and a few unexpected secrets revealed. I loved the story and the ending has me anxious to find out what happens next. Can't wait for book 2!

I want to say thanks to Katherine Hurley and NetGalley for letting me read this book for an honest review. Before I started to read this book I was trying to find more about on Goodreads. And surprisingly there isn't that much about. I know it hasn't come out yet but just wow. This book is amazing. I don't know what to say about it to make people read, but go to amazon now and click the pre-order button now. Please do it now. So at first I had the feeling and since of Throne of Glass. I was like nothing can live up to the Throne of Glass series. This didn't because its totally different then the Throne of Glass. I didn't really have anything I dreaded in this book. It was so good. I think the only problem I have is WHEN IS THE NEXT BOOK COMING OUT!!!!!!!!!!!! I NEED IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I try to be a patient person but with this kind of ending no just no. Look at the gif above to see how I'm feeling. So I will name books that made me feel this way Heir of Fire and Origin about all I can think of right now. This book deserves so much attention its crazy I love it so much all the characters are perfect. The main character is Astari she is a kick-butt character. I'm doing the best I can do to review this book its hard to when I'm speechless. My mouth is wide open I need everything to be perfect again. WOW amazing first book I hope the next book comes out soon.

I'm really, really impressed with this book. Fantasy is undoubtedly my favorite genre to read (though I admittedly don't read nearly enough of it), so I was really excited to get a place on the blog tour for this title. I was not disappointed. Plus, look at the cover. It's absolutely gorgeous.
The world building here is great, talking about a society in which humans live in plain sight of other types of being such as Drifters and Earthmakers, who can use energy and magic of sorts. There's a plot of kings and assassins and forbidden romance and slavery tethers that all add up to a story that never gets boring. For the most part, I found that everything was explained really well without having the dreaded "info dump" of background information. That being said, because there was such an onslaught of new ideas and words there were a few times where I got a bit confused. This never lasted for more than a paragraph or two, and it didn't really hinder my enjoyment of the novel. I also feel like the concept of the Drift- that is, this sort of "other world" that those who are Drifters can dip into- could have been explained or flushed out a little bit. I think I get it, but I was left a little bit uncertain as to how exactly to visualize this.
I really liked the characters of this book as well. The main character, Astarti, is both a Drifter and a slave, but she is far from a weak submissive. She's a bad ass who is skilled in fighting and dark dealings, and fights against the hand that holds her Leash. I also liked the way her master was portrayed; he is given some sympathetic traits, if just for a moment, and because Astarti has always been a silent observer, she notices his moments of foolishness or weakness while still recognizing his greatness. I appreciate that she didn't constantly cower in fear, nor did he have an impossible, perfect bad guy image that cannot be infiltrated or brought down. And then there's Logan. Gorgeous, mysterious, mystical Logan. He was probably my favorite character because of all of the questions Astarti has during their first meets. He is a sworn enemy to the Drifters, an Earthmaker, and yet he seems to be so much more. I liked watching their mysteries get solved and their romance grow.
I loved this book up until the end, which has a cliffhanger. While it has ensured that I will continue onward with the second book of series, I really dislike not having a definitive end to a book.
I'd recommend this book to YA fans who enjoy magic, romance, and fantasy. If you enjoyed Spark of Light, than I think you'll like this one.

I’ll be honest—I didn’t have high hopes for this book. I was pretty unbiased and “eh, I’ll give it a go”. I will say—I was pleasantly surprised!
The best part of the book (hands down) is the construction of the characters. I am a sucker for a strong female protagonist, and Astarti fit the bill. I also love her name. She’s been abused (after all, she is leashed to a master) but she’s one tough cookie. She has no reason to be a decent human being, but she is anyway, despite how others have treated her.
The point of view switches between Astarti and Logan, who I also liked. He’s spunky and mysterious, both key characteristics that I appreciate in a love interest.
The magic was fascinating, though overwhelming (see below). There are Drifters and Earthmakers. Drifters pull from the Drift, Earthmakers wield elements.
I did have some issues with The Griever’s Mark, though. For one, the information and worldbuilding dumping was outrageous. The first few chapters were the absolute worst, and I found myself taking breaks after each chapter to take a breath. Had this not been for a book tour, I may not have continued because it was a lot of work to remember. I’m glad that I soldiered on, but this may turn some folks off.
I also found the Drift extremely confusing. It’s used for traveling and pulling weapons out of, that’s about all I gathered before my eyes glazed over whenever the Drift was mentioned.
I rated The Griever’s Mark 3.5/5 on Goodreads. It was definitely a pleasant read once you get into it and past the info dump bit. The characters make it worthwhile.

This story is exactly why I love reading so much.
It sucks you right in and takes you to a world full of magic, adventure, heroines, battle, and betray.
Astarti is a drifter (human who has the ability to travel through the drift- I imagine the drift as a structure made of energy strings- kind of like in "the Matrix")
She was abandoned by her parents and found a new "home" with the twisted Belos, who uses her and her power. I like strong female kick ass characters, and Astarti is one of those.
Then there is Logan. Logan and Astarti are the new Aiden and Alex (Covenant Series) and I am really excited, to read more.
The writing is just beautiful and fits the world and setting.
The story starts right in the middle of everything (that might take a little to get used to: the Drift, earth makers and drifters, runes, humans and not-so-humans) and ends with a BANG!
Can't wait for the next part, to see how things unfold.

This book has been on my to read shelf for a long time. Astarti is leashed to a master named Belos and has been since she was 7 years old. This means she is his slave. She is also a drifter. The world is filled with drifters, Earthmakers and regular humans. Astarti can go in the drift which is something only a drifter can do. Risking extreme punishment she saves an Earthmaker named Logan. What follows is an unexpected reveal of who she really is and what she is capable. There is also some romance with Logan. I gave this three stars because it does leave you on a cliffhanger. Not a bad story overall though.

This was an interesting start to a series. It was a solid coming to age fantasy. It did end on a cliffhanger,which I am not a fan of but at least it was offered as a kindleunlimited. I'm likely to continue onto book 2 to.see how this story plays out.

This is a review for the whole trilogy.
How can I even put into the words the feelings this series evoked in me? Somewhere between book 2 and book 3 I felt this pressure, this black hole right at the centre of my ribcage and I had to take a minute. What is a mark of a good book if not one that makes you feel loneliness that isn’t your own?
At this point I cannot tell you when I fell in love with the two main characters, when I became completely invested in their wellbeing and frankly I found myself surprised to be so attached to their relationship seeing as how this is a fantasy series.
To be fair I found myself skimming through several somewhat tedious and long explanations. And having read so many books with similar concepts (of fantasy) that part of the plot did not stand out and honestly it made the series more strenuous to get through. The villain or shall I say villains? were equally unimpressive but I like to believe that that was the point. For Astarti and Logan their biggest challenge and enemy came from within.
I hate angst. I truly do, especially when it’s a main plot device but the way Astarti and Logan handled their struggles, the way they stood up for each there when no one else cared, the way they never judged each other for their mistakes and weaknesses, to me that made reading this series worthwhile. I believe everyone got their just dues, I would’ve loved to see more of Korinna and Clara for Astarti’s sake but all in all a great story.
How can I even put into the words the feelings this series evoked in me? Somewhere between book 2 and book 3 I felt this pressure, this black hole right at the centre of my ribcage and I had to take a minute. What is a mark of a good book if not one that makes you feel loneliness that isn’t your own?
At this point I cannot tell you when I fell in love with the two main characters, when I became completely invested in their wellbeing and frankly I found myself surprised to be so attached to their relationship seeing as how this is a fantasy series.
To be fair I found myself skimming through several somewhat tedious and long explanations. And having read so many books with similar concepts (of fantasy) that part of the plot did not stand out and honestly it made the series more strenuous to get through. The villain or shall I say villains? were equally unimpressive but I like to believe that that was the point. For Astarti and Logan their biggest challenge and enemy came from within.
I hate angst. I truly do, especially when it’s a main plot device but the way Astarti and Logan handled their struggles, the way they stood up for each there when no one else cared, the way they never judged each other for their mistakes and weaknesses, to me that made reading this series worthwhile. I believe everyone got their just dues, I would’ve loved to see more of Korinna and Clara for Astarti’s sake but all in all a great story.

I'm putting this at a solid 3.5 stars
This book has been sitting on my kindle for a while and I've honestly been really excited about it. A girl who has known nothing but slavery and evil her whole life finds that there is a way outwhen she discovers she is not who she thinks she is.
Likewise, Logan has always felt like an oddball among those who practice Earth Magic. When he an Astarti meet, despite coming from two very separate homes, they find they have more in common than they think.
Astarti and Logan are a good match. Astarti lights a fire under Logan's butt when push comes to shove, and Logan is able to placate Astarti like no one else. They both make up for what the other has. The only problem? Honestly, Logan was a bit of a Pansy. Now, I'm all for books not having alpha male bad-asses. I like nice guys too. But Logan was just TOO nice and TOO docile. Honestly, he was just boring and had this big thing for Astarti that came out of nowhere. Like Astarti is clearly confused why Logan seems to care so much, but the author never really gives us his point of view on all this. He's a really 2D character that could have been so much more, given the chance.
I'll admit, the book did have the occasional time or two where the author just hit us with profoundly deep quotes.
"The cool breeze slips through the loose weave of my shirt. I shiver, wrapping my arms tighter around myself. Our bodies don't care about our grief; they make all their usual demands."
Yes, yes they do.
Overall a fairly good book, so the question is, will I read the second? Eh, Probably. If for nothing else, Astarti is kind of a bad ass and I love how angry she is. Her hate fuels me (it's been a really long week, ok?)

Received a copy from YA Bound for Tour Purposes - My thoughts are 100% my own.
Astarti is Leashed to the one they call the Unnamed, a former Earthmaker turned Drifter and one of the most powerful men in the entire world. She is on a mission to recruit a rebel leader for her master and if she fails it will be on her. When the leader escapes her grasps and she is forced to face her master's wrath, Astarti finds an unexpected ally in an Earthmaker named Logan who saves her from being beaten. Logan doesn't know why he saved the Drifter but he knows that she is different than those who serve the Unnamed. For one, she was leashed against her will when she was a child. For another, she saved his life.
The world that this story takes place in is really fascinating and it definitely shows in the writing. Katherine Hurley spends a lot of time building the world and describing the workings of the Drift and the Current which are separate dimension wave-like things that only Drifters and Earthmakers can travel through. Drifters travel through the Drift and Earthmakers travel through the Current. The Drift also has the ability to transport weapons so Drifters can travel light. Convenient right? The author also spends a lot of time creating the haven of the Earthmakers and as their name implies, it's kind of a big nature wonderland.
As far as characters go, Astarti wasn't bad. She is kind of an evil turned good character, but I suspect she was always good. Even though in the the summary/blurb she expects you to hate her, you end up rooting for her pretty easily. She's a very strong character in that she can kick butt anytime, but she's also scared. After being Leashed for so long and obeying her master's will for her entire life, she's terrified of going against him, but she still does it. That should at least give you a sliver of respect for her. What she does in this book, how she constantly combats her fears for the sake of other people, really gets you thinking highly of her.
Of course there's a love interest and I must say I'm definitely rooting for this couple. Logan is an Earthmaker (of sorts) and relationships between Drifters and Earthmakers are extremely forbidden. Logan's not going to let that stand in his way and when he rescues Astarti from her master's rage, he brings her to the heart of Earthmaker society which is also extremely forbidden. There he defends her, goes against his brother's wishes to protect, and all in all makes her feel like she's special, wanted, and powerful. Who doesn't like a guy to make them feel that way?
While I did enjoy the story, that ending could not have hit me harder. Don't get me wrong, but I feel like so many books that end with some sort of cliffhanger always end in similar ways. The main character is determined to make someone pay, or he/she makes some life changing discovery. Honestly, I was kind of annoyed when the ending rolled around, but I guess it's for the sake of continuing on with the story. Another thing that was left unfinished was the explanation of Astarti's Griever's Mark. I mean the book is titled that, so maybe I just missed it. What I gathered was that Astarti's father did it to mark her and she's spent her entire life hiding so it must mean it's a bad thing right? I caught something about death, but other than that it wasn't explained much...
Overall, definitely a great start to a new fantasy series. I'm kind of excited to see what the next book brings since the first one ended a bit abruptly so I guess it's good that I don't have to wait too long.

I really enjoyed this book, it's fast paced and super easy to get into. Around the 10% mark I couldn't put it down and I didn't know why, I easily could have finished this in just a couple short hours had I had the time, still I constantly found myself going back to it when I should have been doing other things. The writing is great, and the world is one of the coolest magical worlds I've read about, I really really loved learning about the Drift and the Current, and Earthmakers and Drifters. It's just a really awesome concept that is executed very well.
A Few Of My Favorite Things:
Astarti - She's a pretty badass, highly independent female lead. There were I few times I got annoyed with her, personally one of my least favorite things in YA is when a female main character starts off badass and then just falls apart when she falls in love... Astarti had a few stupid moments after she met Logan, but not so much that I started to hate her. Altogether she's a really likable and awesome main character. Also, she fights with a spear...very awesome.
Magic - Again, I loved everything about the Drifters and Earthmakers. It's such a great world and magical system that left me wanting more. I want to know what exactly the Drift is and what happens next and do the Earthmakers stop being stupid about hating all Drifters!?! I have to say, the world and magic are the best thing about this book.
Villain! - This book has a pretty badass villain, he is definitely not wimpy. You totally understand why people are frightened of him, you have no doubt that he truly is a bad guy. Having said that I would have liked to have seen more of him, mostly he was mentioned, the few times he was there he was beating Astarti(basically). I want to know more of his back story... Still, this is just the first book, and he is a very believable villain which is always good.
A Few Of My Not So Favorite Things:
Logan. - This is kind of just about what I personally do and don't like in a love interest, I"m sure many people have and will love Logan, I'm just not one of them. I get that he's hot headed and does things without thinking but sometimes it just seems so stupid! I can't love a character like him, I didn't swoon for him at all. He's kind of pig headed, and I guess it's sweet...? Or it's supposed to be, the way he comes after Astarti and everything, but I just thought he was acting stupid. Again, this isn't a flaw with the book or the writing, it's just how I feel about him, it's the same way I feel about characters like Jace from the Mortal Instruments.
Insta-love like. - So we start off with these two just meeting(Astarti and Logan), she spared his life and then bam! It's not right out said, but you can tell from the very beginning he's in love(*cough* lust *cough*) with her. Then suddenly she feels the same way, but they can't do anything about it because, basically it's illegal. This is in no way the worst case of insta love, but it's there. I would have enjoyed it a bit more had I gotten to see them falling in love, but being torn because they can't be together, it was just too sudden for me to actually care about them, and feel bad for them because they can't be together.
Overall: I really enjoyed this book, it's very unique and very fast paced and easy to get into. Also, the ending! I need the next one now!

*Although I am reviewing this book in conjunction with a blog tour for the book, the ebook is one I purchased on my own and was not given to me by the author or tour host. As always, these are my honest thoughts about the book.*
I am not even sure how to start this review, other than saying...OH MY GOD I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!! And now I am DYING for April 28 to arrive so I can jump into book 2 the second it arrives! (Heck, I might even throw caution to the wind and stay up til midnight so I can start reading the second it's delivered to my Kindle!) I promise, if you enjoy fantasy of any type, you will love this book.
I was instantly captured and immersed in Hurley's world from just about the moment I started reading. I immediately felt drawn to our heroine, Astarti, even though she tries to warn us that we will hate her - and that she expects it to be so. But I didn't hate her for one minute! She was strong and amazing and intriguing and I just loved her from the get-go. I barely came up for air when I was reading this book, it was completely immersive for me. Then when we meet our hero, Logan, well I was a complete goner. I was captivated by the brilliant, imaginative world Hurley created, where the elements can be controlled by the "good" guys and the "bad" guys can transport themselves along the Drift. I have never read anything quite like this vision of being able to manipulate energy! Honestly, the world Hurley has created is unlike anything I've read before, so unique and well-thought-out and simply stunning. I loved every single second I spent there, and I can't wait to go back.
The romance in the book is another one of my favorite parts - don't think romance in the traditional sense, like wooing someone with candlelight dinners, and such. It's more a developing relationship between two people, slow and sweet and oh-so delightful to watch. There is no insta-love here, I promise! No love triangle, either (yay!). The sexual tension and sexual chemistry are agonizing and brilliant, and yet it remains clean the whole time (even when I might have been rooting for more!). (Believe me when I say, I can't wait to see what happens in book 2!!)
The last thing I want to say is that I can absolutely imagine this book being on the shelf at my library or local bookstore, AS-IS, straight from some big-name publisher. The quality is professional, editing is darn near perfect, and Hurley's writing is so mature. You'd almost never believe it's NOT from a big publisher! It ranks right up there with Rachel Morgan's Creepy Hollow series, for me, as being an indie book that is 100% ready for publication NOW. Definitely one of the best indie books I've ever read, in that sense.

So... this book was definitely something else. I really enjoyed this book, it had a lot of great aspects to it, although there were some things about the book that I struggled with.
Some background of the story: So the generally idea of the book was really neat. The book is about Astarti, a girl who is a drifter and was raised by a cruel man by the name of Belos. Astarti happens to be leashed to Belos, basically making him her "master". She however has a mind of her own in a way, and this is helped to be proven through the Earthmaker Logan.
Key things I loved about the book:
Astarti: Now she is the MC in this book. I love her because she is a bad ass. She is the perfect girl MC because she doesn't need saving, and she can kick some ass if she wanted to. I also like that she may be leashed to Belos, but that doesn't stop her from acting on her own. I also love the way she fell in love with Logan, slowly but surely.
Premise(a.k.a the magic side): This book has a unique take to magic on it. Its almost a cross between elfish and time travel (sort of). With that idea it just makes it generally appealing.
Things I didn't really like
The pompous older brother Aron: I hated how it basically took the whole book for him to trust Astarti. I also found that he was a complete know-it-all. I generally just disliked this character.
This book though was Generally so good!! I highly recommend this book to readers of fantasy. Also I can't wait to read the second Chains of Water and Stone... AHhhh so exciting

Astarti is a wonderful main character. We know she hasn't always been a good person. We know that she hates her master who has kept her leashed all this time. We know she wishes she could just live a normal life and not have to do the terrible things she does.
So even though she is bad...we want her to be good. We want her to be successful.

Wow, just wow! I had high expectations for this book after reading the description about its comparison to Throne of Glass and Graceling through its adventure and romance. I was entranced from the beginning of chapter 1 and my interest did not waver one time throughout the entire book. Astarti is a well-written heroine whose genuine compassion, although conflicted, does not lose focus. She fights for what she believes in, no matter what the consequences are. Logan, the other main character is also an enjoyable character whose unpredictability and empathy make him hard not to love.
There are a variety of beautiful, unexpected plot twists and turns that I did not see coming. I really appreciated that these were believable and not at all far-fetched. Katherine Hurley is a very talented author whose work should be read and anticipated by those who love fantasy and appreciate a story that is entertaining with its hidden hints of humor, and enthralling with the characters who have traits that are both unique and traits that can be seen within people who surround us everyday. I am looking forward to the continuation of the Griever's Mark series and anything else that Katherine Hurley publishes. Please take a chance on this book, you will be forever changed. I think that this will soon be a hugely successful YA fantasy novel.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book because I don't read very many in the fantasy genre. But this is a very well written YA fantasy story. I liked the character of Astarti. Even though she lost her Mom as a baby and Belos has been raising her since then and has had her "leashed" to him since she was seven, she is still her own person. She can enter a thing called the Drift where she can move quickly to different places and people can't see her. But she can see the leash in the Drift and Belos can get to her quickly. He is a cruel person and has whipped her multiple times. She stumbles upon Logan who is an Earthmaker and they have an instant connection. Soon Astarti's background starts to become revealed. She and Logan grow closer and the battle begins to take over a Kingdom. There were parts that frustrated me but Astarti is only 17. I will have to say Katherine really knows how to write an ending to make you want to read the next book. I can't believe she did that to us. I want book two now! Go to Amazon.com and download this book if you like fantasy stories. This is a really good one.

Abandoned for death at birth, Astarti has only known life serving Belos, an evil manipulator of magic. Gifted herself in Drift magic, she does Belos's bidding because she was leashed to him as a child, but all that changes when she meets Earthmaker Logan. Both Astarti and Logan have magic they don't fully understand and neither one has ever really fit in where they grew up. Together maybe they can discover the truth of where Astarti came from and sever her ties to Belos.
I really enjoyed the unique and well-developed magic system of Katherine Hurley's THE GRIEVER'S MARK. It had so many of the elements I enjoy in YA fantasy: an interesting female lead, great magic, a really evil bad guy, and good world-building that didn't bang you over the head with it. There was some great action scenes as well. A solid read for fans of YA fantasy.

Excellent worldbuilding, an intriguing and unique magic system, strong and perfectly fleshed out characters, a story filled with action, epic battles and romance that keeps you glued to the page all the way through: Katherine Hurley's first novel has everything I want in a YA fantasy and leaves me eagerly anticipating the release of book two.
With this stunning debut which is certainly on par with some of my favourite books of the genre (e.g. Throne of Glass and Graceling) this promising new talent should take the world of YA fantasy lovers by storm. A terrific read no fan of the genre should miss!

OMG!!! This book was without a doubt AWESOME!!! I was totally in love with the main character, Astrati. CAN YOU COME UP WITH A MORE KICKASS NAME???? I LOVE IT!
OK so I like the character a lot because she isn't the type to wait for people to help her or anything. she goes head first into situations, also she has her own views & even though she is in no position to act on them, she does. She isn't a damsel in distress type heroine and I wont say she is kickass because It obvious from the cover. Did I mention how fucking awesome the cover is??? I LOVE THAT COVER!!!! ITS PURPLE, FOR GODSAKES PLUS IT HAS THAT KICKASS GIRL ON IT!!
any ways, the plot was beautiful, the world building even more so! It took me into hard drive imagination mode. the one I have when I concentrate extra hard on painting! I really need to Draw the characters from this books! and I will!! soon!! ON TO THE NEXT BOOK!

This is an excellent young adult novel by a new author in the field. I was lucky enough to get an advance copy and read it through quickly.
The Griever's Mark creates a world with it's own magic, characters, and dilemmas. The world of Astarti and Logan is harsh but also filled with beauty and that world changes when Astarti meets Logan and is tempted away from the life she has been living as an assassin. Astarti works for a Satan-like character named Belos and he does not want to lose her. Why she is so important to Belos is mostly hinted at in this first installment of what I hope will be a long and involved series of stories about this interesting world.
I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I want to learn more about 'the drift', Belos, Logan and Astarti. Ms. Hurley has set a chain of events in motion that promise to be exciting and fun.

I recived this book as a part of First-Reads. I'm very glad I did.I loved this book. It was so hard to put down. I'm really looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you're considering this and you are a fantasy fan, do read it.
I thought it was very unique and creative. The world it takes place in has many rules and players, but it was wriiten in such a way that you understood everything right a way. I never had to flip back to try and remember who a character was or why they are important. Most of the characters had more than one side to their character, which made them feel more dimensional and believable. It was also exiting from the first page to the last.

introduction to the setting, time, place, background needs much to be desired.
outside of that, the story(once clear) is intriguing, beguiling, and thoroughly entertaining.
with an interesting look on elementals, this world of drifters and earthmakers is unique.
with a main char fighting against what's expected of her and the bonds that enslave her, she is worth getting to know. her story and the compassion she feels, experiences and interacts with in such a harsh world of war, hatred, and bigotry, is inspiring.
not to mention the challenges laid out before her and the relationships she finds herself in.
altogether the book is a worthy read.

Wow. I read Hurley’s Griever’s Mark for a critique group and honestly couldn’t put it down. It has got everything I want from a fantasy adventure novel. Astarti is a dynamic heroine, both light and dark, and the plot keeps you guessing. Romance, drama, and a beautiful, yet easy reading prose is just what I am looking for. The pace moves very quickly! Sometimes I have to stop and catch my breath. Cannot wait for the next installment.

Really great world! So much new ideas and innovative story lines, I want to learn more about it. Its magic and relations differs from other fantasy worlds. I am really curious what comes next.
I also liked the characters and their profounding thoughts. The battles were exciting and not explained too detailed. The end has a cruel cliffhanger, so I have to read the next book at once.

Heroine: Girl needs therapy
Brutality: I feel as though I’ll never be cheerful again
Worldbuilding: It’s like swiss cheese - good but holey
I never want more worldbuilding from a book, but I actually think I could have used some here. I feel like I was pushed into the deep end of the pool right off the bat. However, I love the idea of drifting. Most teleportation type skills are just that. Popping in and out. Astarti’s description of drifting really made me want that skill.
Not a single society in this book appealed to me as the world was full of racism, prejudice, slavery and unnecessary use of child soldiers. Yeah, I recognize that not every book can have a world like Hogwarts that has us all wishing we’d get our letters, but c’mon I need at least one redeeming factor to feel connected to a book. The censorship and exile of all those dare to be “different” or have unique thoughts made me rage. The societies are basically Trump’s utopia and I’m not here for it.
I love Astarti. This girl is tough. To have been chained since seven and still have the energy to fight back. I bow down to you.

Sure, she doesn’t really think things through and is the definition of impulsive, but I liked her. She has sass and doesn’t let anyone boss her around. The girl has had an impossible life.
I only like Logan and Astari. Every other person in the entire book is a complete waste of space. Belos just keeps a bunch of slaves that he whips and locks in dark places, Aron blames a twelve year old for his father’s death, and Bran just sits around and conceals information. And whoever whipped Logan, I want to hunt down and leash and beat. Ok that’s aggressive, but you get the idea. I am done with every other person. The atrocities are far too many.
Logan, I love you. This man is dedicated and pretty and funny when he wants to be. He doesn’t pity her or act like she can’t take care of herself. He wants to protect her, but not lock her away. Logan immediately becomes Astarti’s protector and advocate. He doesn’t share the prejudice that the rest of the Earthmaker’s have against drifters and I just adore his progressive attitude.
Who really brought me rage is Astarti’s dad. He’s a King who stole his throne in order to save his people. Sounds like a great dude right? NOPE. Because the price of that throne was his firstborn child which he bartered off to an evil monster without telling his wife and therefore mother of the child first. And if that wasn’t bad enough, he doesn’t tell the mom until the big bad monster is knocking on their door, giving her a critical headstart off...five minutes! Enough to lead to her (supposed) death and infant’s enslavery. But it’s okay, because he just *loved* his wife and couldn’t bring himself to tell her and hurt her.
And then this asshat pulls a Demi Lovato “I’m sorry not sorry” on Astari and refuses to apologize for his betrayal and her abysmal life, because his kingdom means more to him than his own daughter. This dude needs to drop the Demi act and go full blown Justin Beiber “is it too late now to say sorry” immediately.
My *favorite* part of this Father of the Year Act is that we finally learn why Astarti has a “Griever’s Mark” or tattoo indicating her parents wanted her dead. Because dear old dad gave it to her as a gift of his “love.” Cuz I mean what kid doesn’t have “death mark” on the top of all their wish lists as a kid?
