A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder meets Tell Me Lies in this binge-worthy debut murder mystery about a college student whose senior year takes a deadly turn when her exes start turning up dead…

Every time a guy breaks my heart, I write him a eulogy in my journal. It’s kind of my thing—closure through creative mourning. They don't actually die... or, at least, they didn't.

Now? These guys aren’t just dead to me, they’re dead to everyone. And I’m the prime suspect.

With my senior year at Pembroke College—and my entire future—on the line, I’ve got no choice but to play detective. Unfortunately, that means teaming up with my long-standing frenemy, Asher, who is insufferable and somehow always there when I need him the least. We bicker, we banter, we occasionally almost hook up, but with the body count rising and my name all over the suspect board, there’s no time to get distracted.

Between college parties, messy exes, suspicious deaths, and a murder investigation I never asked to be a part of—one thing’s for this is not how I thought my last year would go.

Here’s to hoping I can find out who the real killer is... before someone ends up writing my eulogy.

Here Lie All the Boys Who Broke My Heart by Emma Simmerman

🩷 IM SORRY… THIS WAS A DEBUT NOVEL?! 🩷

Listen. I was obsessed.
Up reading my Kindle until 2am obsessed.
And ladies & gentlemen… there was spice, banter, and murder. 😮‍💨🔥

Can we have more thriller authors try this combo please?! Because this book delivered everything I didn’t know I needed. 👏🏼

🖤 The Premise:
Sloane has a coping mechanism for heartbreak — she writes a eulogy for every breakup in her journal.
Because let’s be honest… after someone breaks your heart, they’re kinda “dead to me.” 💀
Only Sloane takes it a step further with her private “burn book” of breakup eulogies.

Except… her journal goes missing.
And then her exes start turning up dead. 😳

Now Sloane — the ultimate hot mess express 🚂 — is suddenly suspect number one. She teams up with Asher (the infuriatingly charming cousin of her long-time crush Wes 😏) to find the real killer before the murderer crosses off the final name on the list… Wes.

🔥 The Vibes:
💋 Spice & slow-burn tension
💀 Murder mystery meets romantic chaos
💬 Banter for days
👯‍♀️ Strong ride-or-die best friends
😂 A little “we were on a break” energy straight from Ross Geller himself

Sloane is messy, lovable, and completely relatable — hitting rock bottom and clawing her way back up with humor, heartbreak, and a wild murder trail in her wake. I absolutely adored her.

As for Asher? Total love-to-hate-to-love energy. Smartass. Jerk. Chaos king. And exactly what this story needed. 😏

🖤 My Thoughts:
I took off half a star because the ending felt a little rushed after such a strong buildup — I just wanted more aftermath! But honestly? That’s only because I didn’t want it to end.
I was never bored. I laughed, gasped, and grinned like a fool at my Kindle. 🤭

Emma Simmerman is one to watch, y’all. For a debut, this was sharp, emotional, funny, and just the right amount of unhinged. 🖤

🗓️ Publication Date: February 3, 2026
Mark your calendars, set your reminders — this one’s going to be a bestseller. 💅🏼✨

Thanks so much to NetGalley for the free Kindle book. My review is voluntarily given, and my opinions are my own.

I was so thrilled to receive an ARC of this book, as it sounded so amazing. Writing a eulogy every time someone breaks your heart and now every single one of those men are getting murdered? A copy of the eulogy being left at every crime scene? Someone really is doing their best to frame this girl for murder, but that journal made it so easy. This book was so amazing. I had no idea who the murderer was. I had an idea but was so shocked 😲

Those people who really enjoy toxic romances will especially enjoy this. It was my only problem with the book. Why show her getting into such a horrible relationship. Why not show healthy relationships? Let people see what they should be expecting from their partners.

There is several scenes in the book containing smut, but you could easily skip those pages if you wanted. While the smut content is a bit graphic, there aren't very many scenes.

Definitely would recommend this! Loved it so much!

3.5 stars. I would describe this as “Death Note” meets “I Know What You Did Last Summer”.
Which I think are two very odd things to pair together, but hear me out.

This story focuses on Sloane. A college girl who writes “eulogies” for her Exs, to help herself move on from them.
Suddenly, those exs start dropping dead.
Someone is killing everyone she wrote about, and leaving copies of her eulogies at the scene of the crime to frame her.
Now, she needs to find out who the killer is, before any of her friends (or her) turn up dead next.

We get the whole “Write a name down, and then that person dies” thing, like Death Note. Along with the "big college friend group, working together to catch a killer, before the killer catches them" thing from I Know What You Did Last Summer.
For that, I feel like I should love this.
And I did actually think this was good, but I would have changed a few things.

I’m not a huge murder mystery “whodunit” kind of girl. I knew this going in, but the premise really intrigued me- so i went for it anyway.
I can be impressed by these! But, considering my small indifference toward solving the puzzle- I am always looking for good, well-developed characters to make it worth while.

I found it difficult to root for Sloane. Her personality is “Party girl, always drunk, does drugs, can’t commit to anyone, hurts the people around her”. and while I do think that characters like this can make a story interesting and bring some “wildness” and fun in- I am not sure that I think that they are the best choice for a main character that the reader is supposed to be connecting with and feeling guilty for.

What I did like about this though,
The plot itself is pretty great.
I mean come on! People die as a result of her writing fake eulogies for them? That is fun, in a twisted way.
Also, the killer framing someone else is always a win in my book. Because, yes! Confuse me
Make sure I have no idea who to trust. I think it brings a psychological aspect into it, which I enjoy.

I also love a plot twist. And I was pretty happy with this one.
Obviously, I can’t say much, because spoiling a murder mystery would be criminal- but I actually wasn’t expecting the killer to be that person. So good on that.

Overall, I think the story itself was good! I like the mystery, and I like the way things played out. But Sloane makes me not know how to feel. It’s almost like… I don’t even really care if she proves her innocence or not.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of Here Lie All the Boys Who Broke My Heart in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this one. Even from the beginning, I could tell Emma Simmerman knew exactly what kind of story she wanted to tell. Her writing has this soft, honest feel to it that made the emotions land in a really real way. I loved the way she captured that mix of heartbreak, growth, and figuring yourself out—it felt relatable without trying too hard.

The characters felt genuinely human, and I liked how she balanced heavier moments with enough warmth to keep the story hopeful. It’s one of those books that’s easy to read but still leaves you thinking about certain lines afterward.

Overall, a heartfelt and well-written YA contemporary that I think a lot of readers are going to connect with.

This book had a great start. I was hooked! I found the concept of this book to be really interesting, so I was excited when starting this book. It was slow, but as I got more into it I was enjoying it. I liked Asher at first, I thought he was going to be this emotional complex character that was going to go through some character development towards the end, but I was sadly disappointed. Every time I started to warm up to him, he just pulled an asshole move that pushed me away. I was really rooting for him to be better. He had potential—especially with his history with his father—but the ending just shattered any possible development. He was just a jerk with so manyy red flags. The love triangle with Wes and Asher also felt dull. Wes never stood a chance from the beginning—that was evident. But in retrospect he was the better guy.

Sloane was a hard character to root for, but by the end I started growing on her. She is definitely a flawed character, but her heart was in the right place. I think she deserved so much better than Asher. Dani and Charlie were probably the only green flag relationship, and they weren’t even officially together.

The mystery portion also felt overshadowed by the romance, which I typically don’t mind but in this case it kept the stakes low. The plot twist was alright; it just didn’t leave that much of an impact. I also had issues with the pacing, especially in the beginning, where abrupt transitions made me question where I was in the story

Overall, I’d rate this book 3 stars, because even with its flaws, I still found myself enjoying it at times. The story wasn’t hard to get through, and the friend group often made me laugh with how relatable they were. Their dynamics were messy, but cute here and there, which made them entertaining to read about.

This was a fantastic debut! I could not put it down! A combination of a murder mystery in an academic setting with a love triangle, enemies to lovers (the banter!!) AND some spice? I was hooked from start to finish and I truly think I will have a book hangover after this one.

i loved this book, it had everything from messy characters, quick banter, mystery, and more. 🔥(
did i read this slowly on purpose bc i didn’t want it to end, YES🙂‍↕️)

sloane is a messy character in a good way. she is impulsive, fierce, sarcastic, and that what makes her her.

asher is the frenemy/partner in crime to help sloane figure out who is the murderer. he is misunderstood, witty, and there for you in times of need.

there are a lot of moments where i was giddy, on my toes, or laughing out loud. i kept turning the pages to find out what happened.

this is your sign to add it on your TBR👏🏻

As a debut novel, I did not expect Here Lie All the Boys Who Broke My Heart to be so good! The premise of the book was intriguing and how the author wove a murder mystery into it was genius. Also, the slow-burn spicy tension with the frenemy and cousin of the boy she likes had me reminiscing about my college days…. Anyway, it has been a long time since I pulled an all-nighter to read a novel but I just could not wait to see what happened next!

The only issue I had with the novel was that I knew who the killer was from the beginning. I felt it was obvious because I got *SPOILER* SWF (that’s Single White Female for those of you too young to remember the novel) vibes from Annica. Plus Sloane brought her to almost every murder scene. I also thought the ending was a little rushed. I would have liked to have heard Asher out and to see what Sloane chose to do after college. Maybe another book is on the horizon?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

A good mix of mystery with a love triangle and some spurts of comic relief. Sloane at some parts comes off as a hot mess express, but shows many different characteristics that I believe readers will relate to (not necessarily the drinking problem) The realness of having a FMC that is not perfect and shows her flaws drew me in more as a reader. Did not fall into the category of cliché, female leads where everyone else around her is the problem and she is just there to tell the story.

Gives off pretty little liar vibes with multiple moving parts that keeps the reader intrigued and wondering what is going to happen next. Genuinely does keep things building all the way from the beginning to the end when the final climax has reached its peak. Throughout the entire story, there are twists where you think you have figured it out, but then something else happens and you realize there is a bigger picture and there is more going on.

Personally found as a breath of fresh air, where the FMC does not end up forced in ending up with someone. Would not have made sense with the situations and accounts that took place. Forcing there to be a love happy ending would have missed the opportunity for the personal growth of Sloane on her own.
However, leaving it open ended does provide the chance for there to be a redemption arc for Asher and not leave him completely dismissed. With him knowing what he’s done and with him mentally knowing that he needs to make an amends to somebody that he loves will allow the character development to reach different stages that would not have happened if the truth hadn’t come to light.

Definitely a read that I enjoyed and played around with trying to guess the ending but did not get it correct.

Here Lie All the Boys Who Broke My Heart is a murder mystery in an academic setting and it was one of those books that I couldn't put down.

The story was easy to follow and filled with banter. The questionable choices of the characters added to the plot and love triangle was a nice touch.

I totally recommend this book and I definitely keep my eye on Emma Simmerman!

Emma Simmerman is an author to watch! Here Lie All the Boys Who Broke My Heart reads like watching a limited-series show on television. It combines murder, mystery, and romance in a way that keeps you engaged and entertained, all while exploring the pressures of having your life and career path figured out that final year of college.

The premise of the plot had me hooked from the very beginning! I loved the way the story played out during Sloane’s final year of college where everything feels heightened, like there’s just one last chance to get it right. Sloane is flawed and messy, which for me is what made her such a dynamic main character. You can root for her while still cringing at some of her choices. There’s also a bit of mystery around her where you’re not sure if she’s a reliable narrator or not — great characterization on Simmerman’s part!

The banter and tension between Sloane and Asher was extremely well-written. For me, it was really a toss up between wishing Sloane would be with someone who treated her with tenderness, like Wesley, and knowing Asher understood her in more fundamental ways. I loved their unwillingness partnership and seeing them grow closer as the plot progressed.

The uniqueness of each murder meant you were never sure when another was coming. I loved the edge-of-the-seat feeling this plot gave me as the suspect pool kept growing. The dynamics between Sloane’s and Asher’s friend group also played into the drama, making it hard to know their level of involvement in helping or hindering Sloane’s investigation. I thought the pacing of the story was superb, enough to keep the plot moving forward all while laying enough groundwork and hints for the final showdown.

Overall, this was an incredible debut story sure to engage lovers of thrillers and romance novels alike! Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

Who Will Be Next?

If you love Pretty Little Liars, this college thriller is one you’ll want to pick up. It’s fast, suspenseful, and filled with lots of twists and turns among a group of friends who party hard and seem to always be intertwined in one way or another.

Sloane deals with heartbreak in a strange but memorable way. She writes eulogies for the “boys” who hurt her. It seems harmless until those same boys start turning up dead with her eulogies beside them. Suddenly, Sloane is thrown into a scary mystery where everyone around her looks a little suspicious, including herself.

The friend group is complicated and messy in all the best ways. At times I rooted for certain characters, and other times I honestly hoped they’d be the next victim. And really, I kept wondering why none of them were more freaked out that people were dying around Sloane. If I were one of those friends, I would’ve packed my bags, left town and never looked back.

Emma Simmerman did a great job keeping me guessing about who the guilty person was. The storyline never felt too predictable, which made the book even more enjoyable. And just when you think it’s over, the author throws in another twist at the end that keeps the tension going.

If you love morally gray characters, messy found family, whodunit mysteries, and everyone is a suspect then you will enjoy this book.

Here Lie All the Boys Who Broke My Heart is a quick mystery packed thriller with twists. It is great for fans of moody, campus-set thrillers.

Keep an eye out for this one in February 2026. Your TBR shelf won't regret it.

Here Lie All the Boys Who Broke My Heart is an entertaining, messy blend of campus drama and murder mystery. Sloane comes back to Pembroke for her senior year after a chaotic end of junior year and a taboo summer one night stand. Instead of the goal-oriented, drama free year she wanted, her ex-boyfriends start turning up dead. To make matters worse, she’s written fake eulogies about them in her journal, which is now missing. Suddenly she’s under suspicion, and the only way forward is untangling the mystery before it swallows her whole.

I loved how twisty the plot was, with red herrings and reveals that kept me guessing until the end. The college atmosphere is a big part of the story too, from the constant parties to the social politics and the way friendships can be both grounding and destructive. It captures that messy, heightened energy of senior year while layering in a genuine mystery.

The romance adds some tension, but what stood out most for me was Sloane navigating the minefield of college life while trying to catch a killer and prevent any more exes from dying. It’s chaotic in the best way, and I read it in only a day.

Thank you for the ARC, all opinions are my own.

This book is a serious contender for my favorite of the year!! I was sucked in immediately, and I was wondering what would happen until the very last page. I couldn't even make a solid guess of who the killer was, but once they were revealed it was perfectly clear that it was them all along. The frenemies-to-lovers trope was very believable. Overall Sloane was a hot mess in the best way.

My only critique is that the scenes were very short, and many scenes could have just been a continuation of the one before or would only need a small paragraph to transition naturally. This occasionally did work out well for pushing the suspense of the story along, though.

This story is a must-read for anyone who loves romance, murder mysteries, frenemies-to-lovers, college romances, and hot-mess main characters. There is spice.

Book: Here Lie All The Boys Who Broke My Heart
Author: Emma Simmerson

This was such a wild ride! I haven’t read anything quite like this before — the plot felt so fresh and original. From the very beginning, I was hooked, and just when I thought I had things figured out, the story completely flipped on me. The twists kept coming, and every time I thought I knew who did it, I was proven wrong again.

The ending? Absolutely crazy. My jaw was on the floor the entire time. Emma Simmerson did such a fantastic job keeping the tension high and the mystery alive until the very last page. The whole premise was just amazing — dark, clever, and addictive.

A solid four stars from me and one I definitely recommend if you love unpredictable thrillers with a shocking twist.

First of all this was a debut ?!
Thank you so much to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for an early digital copy of this book. It is greatly appreciated!

My star rating for this one is a 3.5 rounded up to a 4

In this book we follow Sloane who as a way to cope with breakups writes her exes a eulogy, however when said exes start turning up dead Sloane has problems to say the least, the number one problem being that she is the main suspect.
I'm hesitant to write much more about the plot as a don't want to ruin anything for other readers but if you're looking for a murder mystery with an interesting concept I'd give this one a go !
I will definitely keep my eyes peeled for future releases from this author.

Here Lie All the Boys Who Broke My Heart by Emma Simmerman is a really unique read

our main character is Sloane wrote in her journal her exes deaths, and one day her ex really dies, one after another, so this must not be a coincidence right? so we follow her investigation about how killed her exes and why?

the love interest is Asher and they literally bicker all the damn time and their banter is REALLY funny and cute at the same time

the plot twist was insane, I tried to solve but my face was like 😨😲🧐 through the whole book

and thanks to the very talented author and to netgalley for the opportunity to read this really amazing book

This?!?!?!? Yeah I NEEDED this type of murder mystery/mystery romance type sh*t forreal. As a debuting author?? This was SOOOOO good. Let’s get into it.

How to describe this book off the bat? It’s if To All The Boys I’ve Ever Loved met Tell Me Lies and they met I Know What You Did Last Summer.

The beginning was a bit slow and a bit all over the place. However, it picks up quickly after that. This novel bounces a lot between solving the murder mystery & the love triangle that happens in between. And the plot twists? They really had you on the edge of your seat.

I kind of knew where this book was heading but I couldn’t put this book down. The ending kind of had me like ???? but other than that, 4 stars for this book & 4 stars for this amazing debut author 👏🏼

One day! I burned through this in ONE DAY.
Senior year should have been a chance to start fresh, make up for the mistakes she made last year. Unfortunately for Sloane, her exes are dropping like flies and she's the prime suspect. Could an unlikely partnership be the only way to keep her current love interest safe?
I ate this up. The concept was wild, the action non-stop. While Sloane's drinking was a little frustrating (but sadly totally relatable) the unexpected romance arc more than made up for it 🔥 And that ending?!

The book's premise reminded me of the show "Laid," and the execution also had bits of "The Flight Attendant" and a dash of the first "Happy Death Day" film, all of which I liked so this book landed ok for me. Great title! The novel will probably hook readers that enjoy Elin Hilderbrand.

The story straddles many varied tones including noir, some dark comedy and romance in a way that I didn't find jarring — but that did make me feel like neither one gets enough space to fully breathe.
Towards the final third especially it read like there were one too many plot elements in that regard. And I foresee the main character being divisive to a fair amount of readers in a way that might pull them out.

That said, the clues to the whodunit are well enough planted to track, even if the motive seemed to me kinda suspect (pardon the pun) or not sufficiently cleared up.

Rating at a 3/5 for me overall because I did end up binging it despite these reservations.

Thank you to netgalley, Harper/Voyager and the author for access to the arc to form an early honest oponion

Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC of this book!

Here Lie All The Boys Who Broke My Heart was an incredibly fun and messy time. We follow our protagonist Sloane who just cannot seem to get her act together as she continues to make bad boy decisions, get her heart broken, and write eulogies for the boys who make her particularly upset. However, when her exes start dropping like flies with her journal pages next to them at the crime scene, suddenly she finds herself playing detective to find the killer and keep herself from being the prime suspect. This premise had me absolutely hooked !!!

Strengths: I think this book does a very good job at getting you invested in what’s going to happen to Sloane, good or bad. The pacing especially at the beginning of the book has a good rhythm to it. I thought it was genuinely very fun to learn more about the exes, more about Sloane as a person, and watch her try and navigate the murders as they continued to pile up. She’s constantly making bad decisions and the more you learn about her the more I wasn’t sure if I wanted to root for her or if I wanted her to have a bit of karma, but that aspect was engaging for me too! I think above all for me the mess of this book was fun, it’s like watching a reality tv show where everyone is being terrible but you can’t put it down!

Weaknesses: I definitely think this book could have used another editing pass, there’s a couple technical aspects that bog the book down such as awkward cutoffs to chapters or character dialogues. The end of chapter 3 in particular felt a little jarring, it could have used an extra line or two or a different place to cut entirely. There’s also a couple of moments where transition from scenes left me really confused on where we were either location wise or timeline wise since they blended together and went by very quickly.

I think the part of the book where they go to the ski resort to be the worst part in terms of pacing, I think the actual character tidbits we learn are fun but it really grinds the story to a halt to focus on the romance instead of the murder mystery and I wish they had integrated the two sides of the story a little closer together here.

(spoilers)

My fav character: Annica! I thought she was sassy, fun, and in general fun to read about. I liked Dani too though, the little tidbits we see of Annica and Dani hanging out either the two of them or even with Sloane I thought were cute

Overall thoughts: I would recommend this book to those who enjoyed the movie Do Revenge or anyone who enjoys a messy group of people trying to navigate relationships and murder together. If the constant drinking, cheating, name calling, and very stupid investigative decisions sounds like something that would be entertaining instead of tiring, give this a shot! I genuinely think this book did a great job at being engaging and the actual mystery aspect was fun to follow along with. There’s a couple of technical issues and writing issues that hold this back from being a solid 7/10, but as it stands it is still absolutely a fun time and a very promising debut!

6.5/10 stars rounded down and a thumbs up from me!

"Here Lie All the Boys Who Broke My Heart" by Emma Simmerman is a dark debut murder mystery about a college student whose habit of writing eulogies for her exes takes a deadly turn.

Sloane has a bad record: a history of substance abuse, a DUI, and an affair with one of her teachers. In short, a mess. On top of that, she writes fake eulogies in her journal every time a guy breaks her heart. Now she’s ready to start her senior year at Pembroke College and leave all that behind, with the support of her friend group.

The plot thickens when her exes turn up dead one by one, each with a note containing her eulogy near the body. She becomes the prime suspect and is forced to team up with her frenemy, Asher, to find the murderer. Between college parties, drinking to excess, a fake relationship, secret societies, and murders, her life has never looked darker.

I picked up the book because of the intriguing premise. While it delivered on that front, it disappointed on the character side. This is one of those books where I liked the plot but couldn’t care less about the protagonists. I enjoyed the group dynamics, the banter, the dark humor, and the mystery—but not the main characters.

To say Sloane is a mess is an understatement. She drinks too much, does drugs, and makes one bad decision after another—decisions that only make things worse. She’s 21; she should act like it and get her act together. That said, she does have some redeeming qualities.

Asher isn’t any better. He’s rude, manipulative, jumps from one girl to another, and only cares about himself. He does grow a bit toward the end, but it’s too little, too late. And no, his home circumstances don’t justify his behavior. I didn’t like the way he treated Sloane. For all her flaws—and believe me, there were many—she felt remorseful about the deaths of her exes and was big enough to forgive a few.

Asher’s family wasn’t any better. They knew what was happening at his home and did nothing. And don’t get me started on their friends. A memorial for a murderer? Really? I rolled my eyes when I read that.

The book explores themes of toxic relationships, abuse, found family, love triangle themes, psychological dread, betrayal, and forgiveness. There are a couple of smut scenes, so be aware. The romance is a slow-burn, and I liked that it was built up gradually rather than sprung on us. The last chapter is written from Asher’s POV, which didn’t make me like him any better.

To sum up: a great mystery with very unlikable characters. There are plenty of red herrings and twists. While I guessed the identity of the murderer toward the end, it still caught me by surprise. The ending is more implied than explicit, which I can’t say I liked.

Overall, it was a tense and quick read, so I only knocked off one star. Twisty, dark, and full of flawed characters you’ll love to hate—this one kept me hooked from start to finish. If you love a twisty mystery and don’t need to relate to the characters to enjoy it, this one is for you.

📚Here Lie All the Boys Who Broke My Heart
✍🏻Emma Simmerman
Blurb:

My Thoughts:
Here Lie All the Boys Who Broke My Heart is this full of dysfunctional characters. Lying, backstabbing, cheating. The story follows a college student with obvious problems with alcohol and male relationships as she attempts to solve the murders of her exes. I loved how Sloan was so human she was impulsive, sarcastic and sassy. She was a mess as anyone should be, taking action in her own hands to investigate and clear her name!. I found the chemistry between Sloane and the MMC ( Asher) to be really good. Asher and Sloane enter a fake relationship because he believes they can both get what they want. She wants Asher's cousin to ask her out and be his girlfriend while Asher wants the family business after graduation. When Sloanes ex-boyfriends start dying, her and Asher attempt to find the suspect before the police believe Sloane is the one doing the killing. But time spent together, Sloane and Asher end up getting to know each other better, and it brings on the slow burn, the wanting what they shouldn't have and the inner fighting and mistrust of their small friend group. I highly recommend this book to those that enjoy reading mysterious,, emotional, sad, tense and funny add this to your TBR list.

𝘖𝘬𝘢𝘺, 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘐 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴?

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘶-

Scratch that, let me begin with the positives.
As a debut, the premise is intriguing. Like, forget my planned tbr and dive into this intriguing. (It’s exactly what I did once I got it on netgalley.)
The story started off strong, I honestly found myself hooked into it within the first few chapters. The author’s writing has a way of enthralling you where you don’t want to let go until you uncover all the hidden secrets of this thriller.

𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘹𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭?

Overall, I may say yes. BUTTTTTT, I do strongly believe in the end, Annica’s reasoning for basically becoming a serial killer to get back at her friend was a weak motive. I feel if we have had more development with her as a character before the murders began, it would have read as more driven by so much overlapping frustrations and personal resentment—and less petty jealousy as I took it.
SPEAKING OF CHARACTERS SPECIFICALLY, I officially am part of the 𝙄 𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙎𝙡𝙤𝙖𝙣𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘼𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙗.
Both characters were just so aggravating the majority of the time for differing reasons.
How many times can someone make so many bad decisions? Asher was a continuous red flag whom I tried rooting for numerous times, hoping he would dive into some upcoming character growth but proved he was actually just an ass.
𝘿𝙤 𝙄 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙥 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙝𝙚 𝙠𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙎𝙡𝙤𝙖𝙣𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙚 𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙨 𝙝𝙚𝙧?
Sloane just needs a crap ton of therapy and to lay off the alcohol- maybe a new friend group who will actually support her and not hold a memorial for the person who tried murdering her too maybe? Maybe then she will actually realize to put herself first like her sister advocated for.

𝘞𝘢𝘪𝘵, 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨?

I’m so glad you asked. Because when I tell you I felt personally betrayed. I found the final twist to be the best part of this whole book. I felt blindsided, used- I honestly expected Sloane to become the Pembroke Psycho in that moment and I would have said it was justified.
I applauded her choices to cut him out and use her trauma to make a book.
𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝘄 𝗶𝘁.

What do you mean the book concludes with the potential of her taking him back?! Not only did he put her life at risk NUMEROUS times, he played with her feelings throughout their arrangement, aided in her cheating, and was so immature he couldn’t even outright admit his feelings until AFTER she caught him.

3.5 ⭐️, rounded up

Oh where to start with Here Lie All the Boys Who Broke my Heart by Emma Simmerman? I think I'll start with I would NOT categorize it as a romance. Is it tagged in places as a romance and are there romantic elements to it? Yes. Is it a true romance? NO!! Do not go in expecting it to follow the rules of romance (aka a HEA) like I did and be disappointed with how things shake out.

Now that that disclaimer is out of the way...let me just say, for a debut novel, wow. I am genuinely impressed that this is Emma Simmerman's debut. I was hooked on the plot from the start of the book. The overall pacing of the book is good, even if I felt like we quickly jumped from one dead boyfriend to the next occasionally. However, the ride along to find the killer is exciting and the story itself is pretty darn good.

Onto the characters. The toxic friend group - OMG. These people are THE WORST. It was so hard to root for Sloane - she is constantly making stupid decisions and not learning from her mistakes. We start off the story with her "stuck" living with her cousin for her senior year of college after she gets caught cheating with a professor, a DUI, and substance abuse before her exes start dropping dead. The rest of the group isn't much better (yes, I know it's college but all they do is drink, party, and make stupid choices) and the "love" interest Asher was genuinely a horrible guy. He treats Sloane and every other person like trash. Was I surprised by the killer and how it all got set up? Yes and no - that's how horrible this whole group of people are. 😅 The only potentially redeemable friends are Dani and Charlie and even them towards the end I wanted to smack upside the head and be like, "REALLY!?!"

Overall, this book was unhinged and I spent part of last night thinking, "What the heck did I just read?" But it was good. I hated the characters, but loved the story, if that makes sense. Also - I think we're *supposed* to hate the characters. Keep an eye on Emma Simmerman - I think there are some great books in her future!

Thank you to NetGalley, Avon, and Harper Voyager for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

When I read the blurb for this book, I was so intrigued by the premise that I HAD to get my hands on this ARC. I was really looking forward to this one, but it ended up being different than I expected. I was expecting A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder meets college romance. I wasn’t prepared for the drama and how messy this book would be (messy as in the actions of the characters, the writing was great!). I wish there had been a better balance between the messy and the murder mystery.

Instead of Pip, we got Sloane whose main hobbies are drinking and partying despite the fact that she got in trouble the year before for not only a DUI but for also having an affair with her married professor. She apparently learned nothing from 100 hours of community service, retaking drivers ed, therapy, and being forced to move out of the apartment she shared with her friends. She also spends much of the book pursuing one of her guy best friends who has a girlfriend, and then cheats on him multiple times when she finally gets him.

I really wanted to like Asher, but even his tragic backstory doesn’t excuse the absolute asshole that he is and has been since the day he met Sloane. Even though I was rooting for him and Sloane to get together, their relationship doesn’t have much of a foundation other than mutual dislike and lust.

And while Annika was seriously adamant that the girls would ruin the friend group if they got involved with Wes, in my opinion this friend group wouldn’t have made it past college anyways. They’re only friends because of proximity and the need for drinking buddies.

That being said, I did binge read this book in a day. The writing itself was solid, it was engaging and had a good flow. I did enjoy it but it was also like a train wreck I couldn’t look away from, not entirely my cup of tea but surely entertaining to others.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voyager for providing me with a copy of this ARC! It was a fun journey and a great debut:)

📖 Here Lie All the Boys Who Broke My Heart by Emma Simmerman
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Do I recommend: With asterisks
***Available February 3***

I don’t even know where to begin with this one so let’s go step by step I guess??

First, the plot - Sloane is a college senior who has spent the past few years writing eulogies for her exes after they break up. But now her exes are dying one by one, and thanks to the eulogies she is the prime suspect. OKAY GREAT - this is just the type of bananas plotline that pulls me IN.

Second, the writing - fast-paced, nothing particularly impressive but nothing to complain about for me. The story moves right along, we question Sloane and whether she is a reliable narrator, we feel her stress and fear, we are invested enough to try to figure out who is behind this.

And third, my big ol problem. There is drinking in probably EVERY. SINGLE. CHAPTER (if not on every other page). You may say, Abigail, chill - it’s college. And then you’d laugh when I tell you about MY college days, then discover as you go to pat me on the head and call me a cutie pie that YOU COULDN’T BECAUSE MY HALO WOULD BE IN THE WAY. Okay joking BUT! The drinking/alcohol use and quite frankly, abuse, was SO FREQUENT that it became distracting. And while it was initially semi-relevant to the plot, it also was excessive and obnoxious and I kept going OKAYYYY WE GET IT.

Anyway. Aside from that, this book was pretty fun (three stars from me is complimentary!) but it definitely fits into my “I said I liked it not that it was good” Goodreads shelf. I don’t think I recommend it but if you read this review and said ooh yes sounds fun to me GO FOR IT but if you have ANY FORM OF HESITATION please trust your gut and skip skip skip away.

Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for the eARC in exchange for my honest review!

What a chaotic and fun read!
The book follows Sloane; a messy FMC whose imperfections make her feel real. Sloane tends to write eulogies for all of her ex-boyfriends as a way of moving on from them. However, things take a dark turn when her exes actually start dropping dead, adding thriller to her life filled with drama. Enter one of her dramas – her chaotic friendship group - including Wes and Asher. Wes is the boy our Sloane is crushing on, and Asher is the existence she barely tolerates until one thing leads to another, and he gets involved with Sloane in trying to solve the mystery behind the deaths of her exes.

The banter between Sloane and Asher is one of the book's highlights, as it is sharp, darkly humorous, and often teeters on the line between disdain and reluctant camaraderie (or more). Their exchanges add levity to an otherwise grim situation, making their dynamic both entertaining and layered. The mystery itself was fun. Just when I thought I had the plot figured out, another twist would throw me off track especially the twists toward the end! The pacing kept the suspense alive, and the blend of dark comedy with mystery thriller elements made for a fun ride.

That said, while the story brims with drama, romance, and suspense, it sometimes tries to juggle too much at once. Certain plot points felt underdeveloped, and a few side characters weren’t explored as fully as they could have been. This occasionally made some reactions and decisions feel a little unrealistic.

Even so, the book was an entertaining read. Between the flawed characters and the constant sense of intrigue, this book manages to strike a balance between chaotic drama and dark mystery. It’s a story that keeps you guessing.
