Dark Olympus #8

Sweet Obsession: Library Edition

He was mine to protect. Mine to adore. Mine to lose forever.

A scorchingly hot modern retelling of Poseidon and Icarus.

Icarus may not have flown particularly close to the sun, but he has fallen… right into the rough hands of Olympus's own Poseidon. Being held captive by the gentle giant wouldn't be so bad if Olympus wasn't on the eve of destruction… or if Poseidon stopped looking at him with those irresistibly stormy eyes.

Poseidon doesn't have time to babysit his increasingly bratty prisoner, but he has no choice: Olympus is officially at war, and someone has to keep their best bargaining chip out of harm's way. The thing is, the longer Poseidon is with Icarus, the more he starts to care for his sworn enemy… and the more he realizes that Icarus isn't the villain he's been made out to be. There's a warmth to him, a vulnerability, that Poseidon finds difficult to ignore or deny.

Now with Circe and the Aeaens at the gate and Olympus a hair's breadth away from falling, Poseidon will have to make a difficult choice: about himself, about his allegiances, and about the man who woke his heart from its long slumber only to threaten to break it for good…

”we’re on the brink of a fucking war and i’m worried about doing things that might put a little bit of light back into his dark-brown eyes.” ₊ ⊹

my thoughts ┊ugh i knew this was going to slap! technically more of a 4.5 in my brain, but i have no problem rounding it up to a 5 star for goodreads.

i’ve enjoyed this series so far, but it has felt like the past few books have been a bit of a let down for me. i’ve been more invested in the plot than the couple, which takes away an element of enjoyment. however, i was thoroughly invested in both the plot and the character dynamics with this book, and it hit soooo good. the dynamic between poseidon and icarus was completely different from what i was expecting/wanting, but it just felt so right for them that i wasn’t even mad about it. i loved the way that they cared for each other, and the development they both had individually but also as a couple was so fantastic. their communication skills!!!!!! on top. unmatched. love to see it.

the plot also had me literally biting my nails to the bit; things are picking up so much and i feel like a ticking time bomb waiting to see how everything unfolds. i don’t think i’ve ever been so invested in a political themed plot. this one just takes the cake, i swear.

also, i’m still a zeus/perseus fan til i die. looooved seeing more of his character in this, all the different facets he presents. i’m actually dying for his book!!!!!!!

huge thank you to netgalley and sourcebooks casablanca for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review!

Thank you Netgalley and Sourcebooks for this ARC.

This book had a fun, steamy setup with strong chemistry between the main characters think confident heroine meets broody, emotionally guarded hero. Their banter was a highlight, and the tension in the first few chapters definitely pulled me in. dynamic that adds some intrigue, and a slow reveal of the hero’s past, which had potential to go deeper.

But once the romance kicked in, things felt rushed. The relationship leaned heavily on physical attraction, and I was hoping for more emotional depth or vulnerability between them. The conflict, while present, didn’t feel high-stakes enough, and everything wrapped up a little too neatly without much real growth or resolution. The side characters and subplots were fine, but not super memorable.

It’s a quick, spicy read with a fun vibe, but it didn’t quite leave a lasting impact. A decent 3 stars entertaining in the moment.

I’m still in shock that I even got to read an ARC of a Dark Olympus book y’all. Katee Robert is one of the first authors I discovered when I got back into reading & Neon Gods literally changed the game for me 🥹

I loved Icarus & Poseidon’s story soooo much! This picks up right where Dark Restraint ends, with Icarus at the mercy of the thirteen and the sole person left to answer for his father’s actions to bring down Olympus. Up until now, Poseidon has largely been a mystery. So removed from everyone else, despite the few mentions of him in previous books, and the more we learn, the more we see that even though he may be one of them, his ideals and his methods don’t align with some of their “shoot first ask questions later” attitudes. And sly, clever little Icarus may seem like he’s nothing but a pretty face, however the man has his own methods of getting things accomplished 😏

As Poseidon spends time with his captive, he can’t help but wonder about that pretty face. He knows he should stay far away, but Icarus is determined to survive Olympus at any cost… even if it means a little seduction on his part heheh 😈 I was simply not expecting their dynamic to have me blushing so hard, but WOW!!! They were hot. Katee absolutely served here. Bratty Dom Icarus & big ole Poseidon with a pain kink? Consider me sat Katee. I love the way they handle kink play in such a safe but spicy way.

And things in Olympus have certainly hit the fan. We’ve been building up to this action for a few books, with some truly vital moments unfolding at our feet, and I STILL couldn’t guess what the outcome is going to be. I’m on the edge of my seat at this point, white knuckling these books, and begging for a HEA (especially for Zeus and Hera!!!) 🫣

I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and SourceBooks.

4.5 stars rounded up

We're so far into this series it's a little hard to review without spoilers! Poseidon and Icarus fall in love in this captive romance that works because while Icarus is the captive, Poseidon needs nothing more than to be sexually submissive to this man who is seducing him after always carrying the world on his shoulders. This easily could have been a weird power dynamic situation, but I think it really works.

Meanwhile, shenanigans are happening in the larger city as some of the pieces are put in place for a final political showdown. The romance in this one was great, but the macro-plot is also very solid. I can't believe we only have two books left in the series! I'm on the edge of my seat to see how the next book resolves what's going on between Zeus and Hera. The audio narration is really good too, I felt like it nailed the characters and the sexy vibe between them. I received an audio review copy via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.

Sweet Obsession by Katee Robert
Dark Olympus series #8. Poseidon and Icarus. Modern day mythology romance with erotica elements. Can be read as a stand-alone romance but better as part of the series for the complete world arc.
Icarus is being held captive by Poseidon, but it’s unlike anything expected. Poseidon is gentle and refuses to have Icarus tortured. Icarus is not only cared for by Poseidon himself, he’s given new bedding, healthy meals and seemingly free access to the house. But Olympus is at war and everyone must choose their own way forward and strategically figure out their best allegiances.

Poseidon submissive. Who would have guessed. Loved this couple and their ability to talk to each other openly! Maybe it took a command or three but all in the guise of love.
Hearing both main character’s inner thoughts really adds to the romance.
The war, competition, and power struggle continues in and for Olympus. Will the thirteen survive? Will Olympus itself survive?

Steamy romance. Intriguing world rebuilding.

The plot in this book was really plotting and I am here for it making its way towards the end of the overarching Olympus plot. The romance is between Icarus and Poseidon and it's an insta lust captive/captor story. Right off the bat Poseidon is this Neuro divergent caring man who hates the way Icarus was treated as his captive. I enjoyed both of them though I felt at times that the romance was surface level. I liked seeing them care for each other outside of the bedroom and towards the end I was fully sold on the love. The most important thing I felt out of this book was Zeus and Hera and omg I am so excited for their book. Thanks to Sourcebooks Casa for this arc for an honest review.

I really enjoyed listening to this one! The audio was sooooo well done and the narrators were perfect!

I ate the story up! A captive developing feelings for his captor?!? Hellllll yasssss! Poseidon has been so mysterious I was very excited for his story and it did not disappoint!! The chemistry between and Icarus was hot and these two really had some need driving them to make their decisions.

But lemme tell you…I AM SO FREAKING PUMPED FOR THE NEXT ONE!!!!! My gosh the build up has been insane in the best way!!

Cannot wait to read this book

Edit 1: Katee Robert has been teasing the book cover on insta and I am HUNGRY for this book

Edit 2: Covered dropped and I was expecting a light blue with maybe a shell. But honestly, this eats as well

Edit 3 (June 25th): Having to wait 10 months for this book might actually be the worst form of torture yet

Edit 4 (July 27th): I love the way Katee revealed the kinks and tropes. Like a drink menu?? So cool. We get wax play and captor/captive

Edit 5 (October 13th): So I just read "Dark Restraint" (Not my favorite...), and the teaser for Sweet Obsession is NOT enough. Literally was foaming at the mouth. Reading about Posiden in "Dark Restraint" makes him seem more dark and brooding than Hades himself. Oh, I need him BAD. And Icraus?? Literally need him too, cause the mouth on him?! So we might have another fave couple coming up soon!!

Edit 6 (May 21st): Disappointed, yet expected.

One of my favor rite things about this series is the interconnected storyline. Being able to follow the story from Poseidon and Icarus was fun. They brought a new dynamic to the table that was different from the other couples but just as entertaining and heart warming. I loved that two broken souls found happiness in one another.

The war against Circe is still on going, but I am excited to see what happens in the next book.

THANK YOU so so so much to Katee Robert and Netgalley and the publisher for my FIRST KR ARC in exchange for an honest review!!

I don't even know how to rate this one. I have complained so many times about this series being focused solely on smut at the expense of plot, and this was almost all plot and the smut was secondary. I feel like there was a happy medium that should have been reached, but I can't be angry.

I usually start these reviews with a filthy quote and this one was just... sweet.

NO shade, I LOVE KR's MM romances for just this reason. It feels as if since they don't have the equipment, they focus much more thoroughly on the emotions and what you get is this super sweet love story in the middle of the world falling apart. I was thrilled to get more Thirteen power plays and political machinations, but as a result, it felt like a lot of that emotion was unearned.

Poseidon didn't have anyone else, and Icarus didn't have anyone else. Icarus needed protection, Poseidon needed to protect. I'm certainly not saying they're NOT perfect for each other, but they fell so hard so fast, it wasn't at all hard-won. I HATE slow burn but I do not hate slow seduction and I LOVE getting-to-know-you. This was abrupt and sudden and as a result... awkward. I don't not believe they're perfect for each other, it was just odd to read.

On the other hand, without giving any of the plot away, we get so much more about the dynamics between the Thirteen, between Circe and the Thirteen, more personality differences between different major players; it was a GREAT addition to the Dark Olympus pantheon. Additionally, the power exchange was fun. I always love a big teddy bear and Poseidon was PERFECT!

Icarus I didn't have as clear a picture of, but he was a totally decent character.

I think, as a whole, as it sits in the series, this one COULD be a bit forgettable, but as far as the others in this series I've given less than stellar ratings to, I thoroughly enjoyed this.

It makes me want to go back and re-evaluate giving Neon Gods only 3 stars, but funnily enough, I went back to that review and sure enough, this series has really evolved for me:

What I liked
Lots of representation!! Per the ushz!

What I liked
Their pasts were explored! We know that Poseidon has not been in a power exchange relationship before, we know Icarus has only ever used sex to get blackmail on his partners. One is clearly a teddy bear and the other becomes the reformed bad boy. The development, the progression is clear.

What I liked
Lots of communication before scenes and about consent and safe words, etc...

What I didn't like
... With so much actual plot, sure wish there had been more sexy times to cleanse my palate! And while I'm at it, there was NO smooth transition between plot and smut, which was ALWAYS jarring.

What I liked
Once again, always, gotta love that Greek pantheon personification! A lot of characters that have been missing the past few books make appearances. I love the grudge that Circe has against the "gods" and I love that Icarus is the fallen son who's rescued by the god of the sea.

What I didn't like
It DOES NOT change the fact that I still have no clue why this Olympus is separated from the rest of the world!! When was it established?? Why?!?! By whom?!?!?! It will continue to bug me forever even if I know it's stupid to ask, and should just enjoy the freaking story.

What I liked
Yet again! Sooooo much better than Fifty Shades!

What I liked
There were actual stakes! Like, Poseidon was actually a potential neurodivergent and his characterization as a sub who NEEDED to give up control was spot on. Icarus was much more slimy by comparison, he had a lot further to go to redemption, and he was a good Dom as a result. You empathize with his utter lack of control over every other aspect of his life. The one time he "slipped" if you can even call it that because it was just as impotent as it was supposed to be, Poseidon immediately called him on it and they communicated and resolved their conflicts and used their roles appropriately.

This is in direct contrast to Hades and Persephone, when I was disappointed they were too likable. Poseidon was supposed to be likable and he was absolutely adorable from the start. Icarus was supposed to be shady. The only issue here is that the book is dual POV so there was no nuance as far as guessing if Icarus had ulterior motives, no surprises, no twists. I suppose some people might like that. Just FYI.

TL;DR
At the end of the day, what I liked far outweighed what I didn't like even though there were still some issues in my eyes. Love Poseidon, like Icarus (I would be more than willing to read more of their story, to see if Icarus continues to prove himself a good guy). I wish them the happiest of happily ever afters and equally important, I'm glad to have read more of the complicated workings of this world (in a less complicated way than in Dark Restraint). A solid addition to the Dark Olympus series!

When Katee Robert announced this was available on NetGalley, I broke the sound barrier to run to my laptop and get this book. It’s the next instalment in the Dark Olympus series, and the story of Poseidon and Icarus. Even though both of these characters have had very limited time in the series so far, I ended up loving this story and devouring it in under a day.

Poseidon has taken Icarus as captive, and the barrier protecting Olympus has fallen. With war literally on their shores, the Thirteen need to figure out where their priorities lie. Things are really heating up politically, and the next two books in the series are going to be jam packed with action and answers to all of our questions.

Poseidon has a heart of gold that melts Icarus’ hard exterior. Although this book contained some parts that lead me to recommend taking the trigger warning very seriously (mostly a pain kink), Katee Robert continues to masterfully write their spicy scenes with consent and respect. I love the ways that Poseidon’s ASD is incorporated into the story without being its main focus, and the anxiety issues that both characters face.

How am I going to wait for Shattered Gods in 2026? Likely by doing a series reread. I absolutely recommend this entire series to all my spicy romance lovers out there!

Rarely a series engage me enough to keep reading for 8 books, but this one definitely did.
I love Iracus and Poseidon. They are fascinating saparately and together. Poseidon was such a good representation of a autistic person, and I love how Katee manages to include absolutely every single kind of people in their books with respect, just living their lives and not serving as tokens.
SO has it all: the amazing subplot, the romance between charismatic characters, and even a little plot twist.
This was one of my fav in the series.
I really, really can't wait for the next one.

I will pretend this book isn‘t part of the Neon Gods series. This was awfully boring and I skimmed most of the chapters. This series started of spectacular and I loved the first six books but afterwards it just get‘s bad. The plot was so fucking boring. It‘s the same story over and over just in a different font. I think this political drama is overused and we read about this enough in the previous books - time for something new or this series will flop.
Icarus and Poseidon were cute but kinda boring. I liked them together but their live story was too quick for my liking and besides sex they didn‘t have a good base for their relationship.
Overall I‘m not a fan of this book.

Picking up where the last book left off, Icarus finds himself in Poseidon’s custody. His father is dead and his sister is safe. But him? Not so much. While others in the Thirteen might want him dead for his father’s deeds, Poseidon proves to be different from the rest of them. Icarus is waiting for the other shoe to drop. To watch Poseidon reveal his true colors and be the man the others seem to be. But to his surprise, he is the opposite. Kind, good hearted, gentle, and determined to protect his people. And what starts off as a plan to try and seduce Poseidon to guarantee his safety, something Poseidon sees right through, Icarus finds that he truly just wants to be with Poseidon. And that maybe everything he has done, the blackmail against Circe’s generals, can be used to help Poseidon. Poseidon knows falling for his enemy is a bad idea. And even when he can read Icarus’s intentions, he can see past the mask. And what he sees is a good man, one who has never been treated right or protected. And as they spend time together and prepare for this fight against Circe, the more they realize just how much they understand one another. Poseidon is definitely one of our gentler characters of this series. I loved him! And it makes me wish we saw a lot more of him before his book. We get to see exactly who he is and how Icarus fits him so well and vice versa. Icarus has been through a lot and has done what he can to survive. He knows not to expect kindness and always search for the ulterior motive, but Poseidon keeps surprising him and it’s no wonder he falls for the guy. Another great book to this series. We are reaching the end and I cannot wait especially for this next book.

Take this whole review with a grain of salt, because I have read book one of this series and now book 8 and nothing in between. (In my defense, I thought it was one of those series where each book stood alone and were connected by the world building.)

So like… the whole entire plot of this book: I. did. Not. Care.

It’s not the books fault at all. lol. I just hadn’t had the previous 6 books of build up.

So most of what I’m rating is the romance, with a couple of caveats.

First, there wasn’t a lot of it. It was super plot heavy. And the plot amounted to like… a lot of meetings and phone calls? It wasn’t really that exciting.

And the romance between Icarus and Poseidon I just didn’t really buy. Icarus is a captive because plot reasons from previous books, and thinks he’s going to seduce his way out of his situation. And I just didn’t love that dynamic. It feels kinda icky and the banter felt a little forced. Again I don’t know if it’s the books fault— it’s just never going to be something that works for me.

I did laugh at the end of the book because there’s like this weird time jump where after all these plot heavy scenes it felt like we skipped the climax. Guessing maybe that’s covered in another book?

I don’t know if I would read the next one? Zeus and Hera are both kinda psychos and that could be fun but like this war with Circe is more plot then I want from my fluff. 😂 my brain is not functioning at a high level right now I’m sorry.

I feel like this was an unnecessary book. The plot may have needed to be told but the romance made 0 sense. Other than Stockholm syndrome maybe. And the nickname “big guy” just gave me the ick. I literally cringed every time I heard it. After book 4 this series really started going downhill and I don’t think it will end well. I’m not invested anymore.

Honestly this whole series is probably going to get five stars because I’m having such a good time. Even when I don’t fully connect to some characters the world and the overarching plot allow me to enjoy the ride anyways.

I was not excited for the Icarus story but I was super excited for the Poseidon story. So the fact that I actually enjoyed both was a pleasant surprise. Icarus had a lot more depth to him than I was expecting. The shift from survival mode to being able to just be himself was beautiful. Poseidon must be protected at all costs. I love this man. He is perfect and I will not be accepting contradictory opinions at this time.

More romance novels need to have plus size male bodies!!! I love a 6’5 toned and muscular love interest in my romance as much as the next gal. BUT! I also absolutely adore a thick man. Give me thighs and a belly. Let me feel like his cuddles would make me feel warm and safe wrapped up in strong soft arms.

The dynamic between the two was also a bit of a surprise. I think that it was important though in order to not make the captor/captive dynamic feel icky. I always know I can trust Katee Robert to make me feel safe even when exploring complex dynamics.

Very much enjoyed.

Katee Robert doesn’t do plot so much as really interesting dynamics mixed into something fun like for instance- Greek mythology. This book isn’t about whether or not any of the “battle” going on in the background or the setting in general makes sense. It’s about the relationship between Icarus and Poseidon which is HOT. I loved it. This couple goes against stereotypes and I was here 👏 for 👏 it 👏.

I also like the twists of who Robert decides to pair together in this series. In Greek mythology, Icarus flew too close to the sun, melted his wax wings, and fell to his death in the sea. Now, in this story- we’ve got Icarus hooking up with the God of the Sea? I like that dark spin lol. I also appreciated that Icarus and Ariadne were still connected somehow in the Robert version.

This is a fun read, especially for June!

I genuinely didn’t know what to expect for this book because Poseidon has felt like a mystery character for most of the series so far. He’s been on the fringes of everything happening in Olympus but I am SO GLAD that we got his story with Icarus!

Their relationship dynamic was so fun, especially seeing how Poseidon was so ready & willing to relinquish control to Icarus. And how Icarus was so ready to take that control. I truly didn’t expect to like Icarus’ character as much as I did. I love how good both of these men were despite all the cards they’ve been dealt throughout their lives.

This book is finally challenging Wicked Beauty for *possibly* becoming my favorite in the series 🤭

I’ll be honest—I wasn’t completely sold on the last two books, but this one felt like a return to form for Katee Robert. While the romance is still front and center, there’s a stronger plot this time, and the characters feel more fully developed rather than just being driven by their attraction. This one finally balances the steam with an actual plot (yes, miracles do happen). The stakes are high, Olympus is on the brink of war, and amidst all the chaos, Poseidon and Icarus find themselves caught in a complicated, slow-burning connection that feels both intense and surprisingly tender.

Beyond the romance, the world-building adds depth to the story, with Olympus on the verge of collapse and old allegiances being tested. The stakes feel real, and for once, the external conflict isn’t just a backdrop for the romance but an integral part of the narrative. It makes the emotional moments hit even harder because there’s so much more at risk.

Is this a historically accurate retelling of mythology? Absolutely not. But does it deliver on drama, passion, and an irresistible slow-burn romance? Without a doubt.

My last read of 2024 and my first ARC <3

This was my first ARC, and I liked it so much. The love that I have to this series is wow but the last two books were letting me down; now this one saved it, it was perfect.
I just wanted to hug Poseidon so bad, he's just so cute, and like Katee Robert said, Poseidon is so damn good for this world.😫😫
I loved how they cared for each other since the beginning, they didn't want to do any harm to each other.
I was sooo invested in this romance, and the plot 👀...we get to see more of Hera ploting against Zeus 👀 while Circe is trying to attack Olympics, and now I just want to read the next one.
The only thing that threw me off was the tiny jump or slip at the end. Overall, I liked it 👌🏼👌🏼
Thanks Katee and NetGalley for letting me read this book.

Sweet Obsession is the eighth title in the Dark Olympus series written by Katee Robert.

*Olympus retelling
*Captor/Captive
*Opposites attract

My sweet, precious, gentle giant Poseidon!!! I will love him forever! Icarus is exactly what he needed.

Sweet Obsession picks up immediately following the ending of Dark Restraint so readers will need to read that title first to understand what the current situation is and how the main couple came to be together.

I won’t give away any spoilers but there are a couple of Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon that I absolutely loved!

Another great addition to the Dark Olympus series, highly recommended!!

Format: NetGalley ebook
Genre: Contemporary fiction, romance
Overall score:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice level:🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Characters: Poseidon (MMC) & Icarus (MMC)

This is my first book by Katee Robert. I wasn’t aware that it was part of a series when i got the arc , so I jumped in right in the middle. Even though I didn’t know the characters or the backstory, I found it quite easy to immerse myself in their world. However, I think I should go back and read the earlier books. I’m excited to see what happens next, so I’ll definitely be looking forward to the rest of the series.
